The idea behind Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way is that by writing three pages, longhand and stream-of consciousness, first thing in the morning, you can overcome the obstacles that stop you from becoming your most creative self. This works partly because it forces you to create something (even if it is just a long list of gripes) every single day. It doesn't take much time. You're not even supposed to think. But the act itself gets you past all that self-defeating fretting about why you think you aren't a creative person. Cameron sees her morning pages as "a form of meditation," as "spiritual windshield wipers."

While Cameron touts the morning pages as a way of life, she suggests you start out doing them as part of a "twelve-week program to recover your creativity." If you would like to keep your first twelve weeks of morning pages together in one tidy place, The Artist's Way Morning Pages Journal is a fine tool for doing so. Each nearly blank page features an inspiring quotation from The Artist's Way: "Leap, and the net will appear," says one; "Creativity lies not in the done but in doing," reminds another. We should mention that many of these little inspirations include references to God, which may be troublesome even for spiritual atheists. --Jane Steinberg

Frustrating to write in!.......2007-01-27

I have nothing against the idea of this journal, it's just frustrating to work with. As another reviewer mentioned, spiral-bound would have been a lot nicer. It is extremely difficult to write in due to the thickness and the binding. I am also left handed which never helps when trying to write in books. Instead, I bought myself a notebook that I love. It's much more pleasant to write in the morning, now. I'd save your money for something else that you would like.

Recommend to Accompany Workbook.......2007-01-18

Didn't think it was necessary but it came bundled with the book and I figured I'd have it if I wanted it. So glad I got it. It seems simple: just keep a journal. It's not really that simple. The pages, because they have inspirational smatterings of the book printed throughout, help keep you focused on where you are in the 12 week process. It's very useful and I would recommend anyone using the workbook to start, also get the journal. Once you're done you can always continue the morning pages in a generic journal, but to get going, this is the way to go.

The morning page journal is an excercise in discipline. To say the least it will require habits to be changed. When I began writing the morning pages it wasn't so easy to pick up a pen and write. Despite there being no rules except the one that says write. Often times I would find myself making excuses as to why I didn't have time. Although I found that when I did make the time I began to experience changes. Not just in writing. I began to feel more energy and as though my life was becoming less cluttered. I only spend about half an hour writing my free thoughts and limit myself to one page. Although you can write as much as you want. Really whatever comes to your mind. Think of purchasing this journal as like buying a piece of excercise equipment. Except this time it's for your mind. I have found that this journal is a great first step in developing habits to last a lifetime. Although it is geared towards your creativity there is so much more that writing can do for you. If you start doing it on a daily basis you will begin to feel changes. It will become easier to write everyday and your thoughts will come together better. You should also feel more inspired to take on tasks and conquer your day. Learning how to inspire yourself is the best tool you can use to make yourself a better person. By far this journal is worth much more than the price to me. I am very happy I purchased the Morning Pages Journal and I am sure you will be to.

If you're into pottery, you'll love the various designs in this book. However, if you actually make pottery, like myself, this book is only semi-useful in that you can get a few ideas from the pieces photographed. There is very little text, and none of it is really informative on the methods used. This book is for the coffee table, not the art studio.

Wonderful coffee table book, impressive artwork.......2001-03-18

This is a delightful coffee table book featuring an impressive selection of earthenware, porcelain and stoneware. It includes a wonderfully diverse array of styles and techniques masterfully executed by contemporary craftsmen. With over 800 unique pieces, it will provide me with inspiration for years to come.

I loved a shimmering vessel created by Robert Piepenburg and the teapots by Rimas VisGirda with women smoking. I also enjoyed a thrown jump pot with buffalo and abstract nude male/female teapots. I found a whimsical coil-built stoneware plate called indigo sky with a man hanging on to the moon truly delightful as well.

The layout is straightforward. Each piece includes a large color photo and brief information on the techniques used to create it, the artist and the dimensions in both English and metric. The photography and overall quality of the book are excellent. There is also an index including the address of all the artists in the book that is helpful if you wish to purchase from one of them.

This book gives a thorough and knowledgable insight into working with porcelain. The many fabulous photos are inspiring and the artists have been generous in sharing their methods and recipes. I have found this book to be an excellent addition to my resources and know I will keep referring to it throughout many years.

A treasure trove of information, techniques and examples of the best in porcelain today. Excellent for the collector as well as those working in this demanding medium. The photos are breathtaking and Lane knows what he is talking about. This is the latest edition of what is clearly a labor of love.

I feel that this book helped immensly with my work in porcelain, it helped me to understand its qualities and form better. The book is well written and very helpful, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Basically the subtitle says it all. This beautifully illustrated book consists entirely of photos and captions. But, oh my god, what an incredible collection of mind-expanding work. Each piece is perfectly crafted, fresh, and often whimsical. My eyes just got bigger and bigger with amazement as I flipped through this book for the first time. Covering the full range of the best in modern ceramics, this book has hundreds of full color photos to inspire beginners and professionals alike. There are large architectural pieces, thrown pots, handbuilt functional and decorative wares, low fired, pit fired, high fired and raku wonders - something to delight everyone.

This is a beautiful book with many unique & imaginative ceramic designs that will provide inspiration for ceramic artists of all levels. It also makes a great gift or a delightful coffee table book for any art lover

The book is in full-color displaying one to three art pieces per page. Both handbuilt & wheel-thrown ceramics are shown. Captions provide the artist's name, date completed, & size as well as materials & techniques used.

Some of my favorite pieces includes a raku crackle jar & carved tree tiles. I love both the plate with waves & a teapot, and another with egrets on it. I also enjoyed a hand-built multi-colored teapot.

Nicely printed in full color on slick paper. At least the pages are numbered, but few strips retain their original dates and many do not even have the year of copyright. I, for one, would have liked to have seen the first "Hi and Lois" Sunday reprinted, and more historic inclusions. Oh, well... Most reprinted strips seem to be from the last third of the feature's history, and several nice autumn examples are included. The strips are arranged in subject categories. For all that, "Hi and Lois" is a family humor strip which will stand up better in the long run than the more socially revelant strips which seem to dominate the newspapers today. We can only wait for a more comprehensive collection with date citations, as we do for the companion feature "Beetle Bailey." In the meanwhile, buy this book. Also recommended for public and school libraries.
