I am a professional artist and teacher. The Collins Big Book of Art offers a view of various periods, styles, genres, and trends in a way I have not found in any other reference book. Its terrific and useful.

This book was not what I thought it would be. I thought it would be a nice coffee table book - that it would be cool to pick up and flip through - but it reads more like a college textbook, and if I could, I would sell this book back to the college bookstore.
Big Book of Minimal value.......2006-03-23
Much repetition and too little of artists neither western nor white...or male for that matter. Though the sections are a lovely idea the same art is used in each. A not terribly risky venture, this.
Artistic Journey and Psychology of Art.......2006-02-27
This volume takes you through the history of art in a way that embraces the reader like none other. There is order here in the way the material is presented. It is very logical and helps explain quite a bit of what has gone on since the first artistic expressions were created. You can feel your way through history and find a clear development of artistic techniques and styles. There is a definite reason behind these and it is explained with great feeling. There is quite a bit of psychology about the subject matter of what is on the canvas. Why does an artist or group of artists choose to capture something in a particular way? This is a quite a book.
For anyone who appreciates art .......2005-11-18
This is a great book for anyone who wants to know a little (or a lot!) more about art. It has numerous illustrations, a timeline, and also goes into themes and how certain art movements have depicted a specific feature (eyes, for example). You can open the book to any page to get a quick glimpse and learn some fun facts, or you can read it from the beginning. The Collins Big Book of Art is beautiful and the best general book about art I've seen. I received it as a gift, and I'm going to be buying it for others this Christmas.

'Reigning Cats and Dogs' is an impressive book; entertaining for people of all ages to read because it encompasses a wealth of facts about the lives of famous people, from athletes to actors to politicians to poets to musicians, and beyond--all with a very clever and always highly amusing feline or canine twist. The full-color, full-page illustrations are adorable cartoons of anthromorphosized animals--(incidentally, it's certain to please the furry as well as the average person!) Two thumbs way up for this terrific gift idea. I got it as a birthday present from someone who knew I was an animal lover, and it turned out to appeal to so many more interests of mine as well. Always a cute one to flip through and to read.

A Hillariously Clever Book.......1997-12-30
"Reigning Cats and Dogs," is a clever outlook at what some of our favorite and least liked celebrities would be like if they were canine-ized. The author uses his drawing talent to bring these anthropomorphic celebrity dogs and cats to life, using an almost British styled humor. Read about The Beatles, I mean, The Beagles, and read about other well known entertainers and journalists. Now, the only problem seems to be how to a get these pictures framed and on your wall.

This book is great but little less juicy than Cecil's other books. I would say four of the eight stories are great but again his style makes up for much of it. Hardly ever you will read court stories written in such witty fashion. After reading his books you might feel "why not find a judge's job". But one thing is for sure that none of his stories are similar -immaculate British English

Not really satisfied with the product. The sheets are scanned and the printouts are that of a "fax" quality. Some staffs are indicated with C-clef which makes playing for the less experienced players almost impossible. A bit disappointed.

In his study of Bach’s Clavier-Ubung III, Gregory Butler makes a major contribution to organ music and Bach studies by giving to original printed copies of this work the kind of attention normally reserved for manuscripts. He details the work’s chronology, production, aim, and even spiritual program, treating the prints as unique documents with discernible variants and readings.
The need to examine early printed copies of music is being recognized as an important tool which can reveal as much as the study of early manuscripts. Composers themselves frequently took a major role in the preparation of the engraving.
Clavier-Ubung III—arguably the most carefully planned, intellectually conceived, and challenging volume of organ music ever published—is a particularly useful example of Bach’s printed works known chiefly from the print itself. The print is richer in information than any of the other original prints of Bach’s music, making it a distinctly suitable repertory for the author’s innovative treatment. Butler reveals fascinating new information on the genesis and history of the collection’s composition, finding, in part, that sections of the work were composed considerably earlier than previously was believed.
