Customer Reviews:
A new start.......2007-08-23
I have long suppressed the "artist" in me and Janice shares how to rediscover those gifts and use them to God's glory. Our church is starting a new visual arts ministry and I will be using this book as an introductory bible study for all new participants in this ministry. Thank you for a book that revives the artist in all of us and validates art as a true expression of worship.
What a blessing!.......2007-01-17
This book was a tremendous blessing as I thought, prayed, and wrote about what I read. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to make their art an expression of worship to their Creator.
Wow!!.......2006-06-10
I'm only half-way into this book, but it's life changing. This book is aimed to help you integrate your art into your Christian life and walk with God (be it writing, cooking, visual arts or performance). She walks you step by step to exercises to help unlock your talent and help you hear from God, including scripture memory and journaling.
This book is aimed at someone who just wants to look deeper at their gift, or someone who has squashed their creative gift, or even someone who is trying to uncover exactly what it is.
Excellent!
Explore Creativity and Your Faith.......2006-04-11
It was truly refreshing to find a book on creativity that was also deeply rooted in the Christian faith. The book helped me to explore not only my creative side, but also how that ties into my faith life. I underlined several passages, as so much of what was written resonated with what was going on in my life.
This is a great novel for jump-starting your creativity. I thoroughly enjoyed working through the exercises.
Goes Deeper than Artist's Way into Faith.......2006-02-25
This is an excellent book. I've done Julia Cameron's, The Artist's Way" and loved it but Creative Call goes a step further.
Using Biblical references, prayer and journaling, Creative Call takes you through an eight week journey of creative discovery.
God gave you your creative gifts for a reason and he intends for you to use them to his glory. Creative Call contains excercises that help you explore how to make time for your art, forgiveness of those who have discouraged you (it may be you) and encourages taking steps to get started. If you feel God has given you a creative gift and you're ready to find out what to do with it, this is the book for you.

Georgia O'Keeffe / John Loengard: Paintings and Photographs
In June 1966, photographer John Loengard was asked by Life magazine to photograph Georgia O'Keeffe in New Mexico, where she had been living since the late 1930s. Georgia O'Keeffe was 79 years old at the time, Loengard was 32, and for three days he observed and photographed the private life of this pioneer artist who virtually redefined American painting. For this unique book, we selected almost fifty of the finest black-and-white pictures Loengard took of the grand, solitary woman in the desert, and juxtaposed them with selected paintings of hers. They record the course of a day in the life of Georgia O'Keeffe from sunrise to sunset, developing their own quiet, mysterious effect. It becomes clear how much the austere poetry of the landscape corresponded to the artist's own self-created world and how her artistic imagination was kindled by bleached bones and an infinite desert.

Book Description
With Fairport Convention and solo, Sandy Denny displayed one of contemporary music's finest voices; she also composed her own material, including "Who Knows Where The Time Goes"-a huge U.S. hit for Judy Collins-and sang on Led Zeppelin IV. However, Sandy tragically got caught in a spiral of drink and drugs and died at age 31 in 1978. Best-selling Dylan biographer Heylin draws on hours of new interviews to tell Sandy's story.
Customer Reviews:
in full agreement with above review.......2007-09-10
I fully agree with the review above. Heylin's disdain in this book for Trevor Lucas is rather sickening and uncalled for. So he was no saint, and neither was she; who is? But to put Trevor Lucas down as a talentless bum, a leech who went along for the ride, in what ought to have been Sandy Denny's definite biography is respectless and smells like typical British gutter journalism. Now I don't know his other work but judging from this book, Clinton Heylin would be nice for The Sun or The News Of The World. I never met Trevor Lucas but as far as I know he is held in quite high regard among his peers. As a musician/frontman: check out the album Fotheringay which is as much Sandy's as Trevor's album. A classic, which is interesting given that Lucas is "talentless". Then Fairport's phoenixlike rise from the ashes in 1972 in which Lucas was a main catalyst; he's all over the Nine album which ranks among the best Fairport albums. Talentless my arse. Stick to the facts, Heylin, and keep your completely subjective thoughts to your diary.
Me, I much prefer the alternative biography, the unpublished one which this one replaced. Boo to Helter Skelter.
Horrid, and poorly written........2003-10-28
I was fortunate to get a copy of this nasty little book at the library, I'm glad I didn't spend money on this book.
The writing is horrid, with never ending sentences. One several occasions, one sentence went on for three or four lines, and contained easily a dozen commas. It's as if the author went out of his way to write in the most convoluted, confusing way humanly possible.
There really isn't anyone in the whole biography who the author seems to like, including and especially Sandy. The amount of hate and venom that the author spews towards Sandy's husband, Trevor Lucas, so awe inspiring that one would think that Trevor killed the author's cat. The author repeats a number of times how he is a talentless hack who only married Sandy because she was famous, not because he loved her. Granted, I don't think anyone would mistake Trevor for Richard Thompson, or even Simon Nicols (who I think is mentioned all of three times in the entire book); but I don't think he was the utterly talentless bozo the author makes him out to be. From what I've heard of him, he isn't that bad of a guitarist.
More seems to be written on how much Sandy drank, with whom she slept, how erratic and moody she was, etc., than anything else. It makes you wonder why the author choose to write a book on a person he doesn't seem to like one iota. Unfortunately, it's the only book out there on Sandy Denny. Which is the book's only remotely redeeming quality.
impressive biography.......2003-03-13
I hadn't heard any of Sandy Denny's music until 1992, when a friend of mine gave me a cassette with a couple of her tracks on it. I listened to it on a long car journey, when it was the only tape I had with me, so I heard it several times then. I was totally fascinated by her music and voice and started collecting her music. Of course you then also want to find out something about the singer and initially all the info I had was from album liner notes. I soon learnt that she'd died at an early age but the circumstances leading up to that tragic event were never satisfactoraly explained. Later I bought a book on Fairport Convention (Meet On The Ledge) and even though that did provide a chronology of her career with FC, it didn't really shed more light on Sandy as a person.
No More Sad Refrains does. It is clear that the author is a big fan of her music, but he manages to keep the distance required to paint an objective picture of someone who was very talented, but certainly no saint as some of the album liner notes would have you believe. The book also manages to put a lot of her lyrics in perspective with things going on in her life, and has through that enriched my listening to her music.
Although of course the excesses of rock and roll and life on the road are described here, it is always done in a very objective way and never with the sensationalism that you find in many other rock biographies. An excellent and impressive biography.

Book Description
Even in the late 20th Century, there remains a complex web of spatial inter-relationships linking port cities and coastal zones. Cityports, Coastal Zones and Regional Change brings together seventeen authors to explore aspects of these inter-relationships. Many of the chapters were first discussed at an intensive British-Italian Seminar held in Venice in 1994 and have subsequently been substantially revised, edited and updated. The essential focus of the book is on the role of port cities in the development and management of the coastal zones within which they are located. There is a strong emphasis on environmental issues, economic diversification and planning. While most of the numerous case studies featured are British or Italian, other areas represented include Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Tropical Africa and North America. An overview of cityports and coastal zones in the context of sustainable development provides a timely and forward looking conclusion, and makes the book ideal for researchers and students of transport geography, urban geography, port studies and coastal zone management worldwide.

Book Description
This book examines the impact of globalization on frontier cities, and how various frontier cities in different regions have responded to these forces. The volume includes a number of theoretical chapters exploring various aspects of global change, including the economic, spatial and geopolitical dimensions. A longer section includes a number of case studies of frontier cities that have adapted to these changes. A number of countries as well as city types, from small towns to frontier metropolises, are examined, providing a broad overview of developmental alternatives. Emphasis is placed on the importance of initiatives from below, that is, efforts that do not depend on the planning and budgetary resources of national governments, since these are generally no longer forthcoming in an era of government down-sizing. Audience: The book will appeal to students in planning, geography, economics and regional studies, as well as to local officials who are concerned with urban development strategies, and their prospects in the new millennium.

Book Description
The papers in this collection were first presented at a conference on "Chinese Security Policy and the Future of Asia." The authors, each representing different countries and regions affected by the growth of Chinese power, were asked to address four major questions: (1) China's position in the present and future security environment of the given country or region; (2) principal sources of tension between China and the particular country or region; (3) prevailing opinion in the country or region toward China's efforts at military modernization; and (4) the principal political, security, and economic strategies for responding to China's emergent power and military role. The purpose was to reveal elements of commonality and difference in national strategies.

Book Description
Among development assistance agencies, the World Bank has led the way in policies to mitigate the impact of large-scale engineering projects on local populations, particularly in the building of dams. Since the 1980s the Bank has implemented guidelines for policies with respect to displacement, social infrastructure and services, environmental effects, resettlement, compensation, and the restoration of income for those affected. Having learned from the failures of past resettlement programs, the Bank has endeavored to function as a responsible and caring agency. This volume builds upon earlier studies and field work to offer a broad look at dam-building projects in six countries and to review the outcomes of Bank policy, learn from experience, and assess outside criticism.
The book covers representative dam projects in India, Thailand, Togo, China, Indonesia, and Brazil. Each project was undertaken after Bank resettlement guidelines had been implemented. The widely ranging results in each country are assessed. In the areas of compensation for acquired land, relocation, infrastructure and services, the contributors note satisfactory levels of improvement or positive trends. Governments are moving towards acceptance of the idea that displaced families should be paid the real value of their lost assets. Relocation processes are now keeping pace with water movement caused by dam building, and health, education, utilities, and roads are better than before the resettlement.
Other results have been less positive. The impact on incomes of those involuntarily resettled has been harsh in some locations. Resettler dissatisfaction has been intense, notably in those countries where the national economies are not experiencing strong growth. The Bank's performance itself has been uneven. There have been lapses in appraisal and monitoring during the projects and insufficient follow-through support for resettlement operations after the completion of loan and credit disbursements. In addition to its case by case analysis of countries and projects, the book includes detailed lessons and recommendations to strengthen resettlement policy and practice. Involuntary Resettlement will be of interest to economists, sociologists, and professionals working in regional development policy.

Book Description
The European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP) is published in eleven official EU languages and is the most international planning policy document that exists. This book is a unique look at the ESDP offering a snapshot of contemporary European spatial planning.
Customer Reviews:
Not the usual planning text ..........2003-07-15
Not the usual planning text at all - in fact, a planning thriller, as Faludi and Waterhout chart the twists and turns of how Europe struggles for something like a spatial policy. Arguably this book sees the issues more from a north European than a south European perspective: but it is full of rare insights, and moves with pace. A good read!
