Martial-arts comedy "Ranma 1/2" is not something you really associate with Shakespeare. But that is just one of the problems that Rumiko Takahashi's sex-switching hero has to deal with in the seventh volume of "Ranma 1/2" -- there's also girl's locker rooms and some lethal cooking.

Ever since Akane was little, she has wanted to play Juliet in the school play (especially since she was always cast as Romeo). Now at last, she will. Problem is, there are too many Romeos: crazy Kuno, lecherous Happosai, stalkerlike Gosunkugi, and even Ranma himself.... once he learns that the prize is a trip to China. Even worse, Akane's father takes it upon himself to make sure that "Romeo and Juliet" finally kiss....

In the next story, Ranma learns that Ryoga has a map to a Japanese "spring of drowned man" -- which will make both of them normal again. Problem is, it's under the girls' locker room, which has been painstakingly booby-trapped in order to snare Happosai. And Ranma and Ryoga, being male, are not exactly welcome....

Finally, Kodachi decides to depart her exclusive girls' school so she can take some cookies to "darling Ranma." Unfortunately for Ranma, he gets photographed in a rather suggestive position with Kodachi -- and soon she's spreading the photographs far and wide. Now Ranma will have to get the negative, and try to avoid Akane's jealousy over Kodachi.

Poor Ranma has a tough time: he gets poisoned, blackmailed, drenched, drunk, punched and trampled, humiliated in an ultra-tight spandex thong, and (almost) kisses Kuno. In other words, it's more or less an ordinary week for poor Ranma, who seems to have a disproportionate number of nutty people around him.

And these three stories show the surreal scenarios that Takahashi can concoct -- especially the dueling Romeos and the Kuno estate, where Kodachi keeps her pet alligator. The middle story of the three is a bit stretched out, with Ranma's fruitless efforts to get into the locker room, but the first and third are pure gold.

And in this volume, despite their constant fighting, Ranma and Akane do demonstrate how they care for each other. Not only do they (almost) kiss, with Ranma being flustered and disgruntled that it wasn't the real thing, but he voluntarily eats Akane's cookies just to make her feel better. If that isn't true love, I don't know what is.

Romance, cookies and tiny pervs are only a few of the comic sources in the seventh "Ranma 1/2" volume. "You ashked for it, Romeo...."

I think for all manga lovers this is an amazing book and is none stop funny. is a must read.
the story runs something like this.....ranma( the main character) when he gets splashed with water well POOF he's a girl big problem eh(yes i'm CANADIAN)and 2 make matters worse he needs to marry a girl that he absolutly hates.but thats all i'll tell you for now so if you want to find out what happeneds well your gonna need to go buy it .definitly worth it
Probably not recomended for younger childen( when ranma is a girl he runs around topless,and YES it does show)
DEFINITLY worth every penny you spend on it .

Ever since arriving at Tokyo, Ranma Saotome's love life has been way too complex. But in the eighth volume of Rumiko Takahashi's "Ranma 1/2," things get even worse for the teenage martial artist -- he now has three fiancees and a newly-cursed rival to deal with.

A mysterious young man, Ukyo, thrashes Ranma's dad and threatens to do the same to Ranma. Ukyo is a childhood pal of Ranma's, now a master okonomiyaki chef (sort of between a pancake and a pizza). But he seems angry at Ranma, for reasons Ranma doesn't understand and soon challenges him to a duel. It ends with Ranma and Akane discovering a shocking connection to Ukyo: "He" is really a girl, and Ranma's fiance....

As if this weren't uncomfortable enough for Ranma, Ryoga soon arrives and tries to throttle Ranma for having another fiancee when he also has Akane. Ukyo clues in that Ryoga likes Akane; to get Ranma all for herself, she sets up a date between the bashful Ryoga and clueless Akane. Problem is, Ranma soon shows up as Ryoga's "long lost fiancee..."

There's no fun in the sun for the Ranma gang, when Ranma sets ancient martial-artists Cologne and Happosai on a date. Turns out Happosai raided the Amazon village a hundred years ago, and stole a valuable heirloom... which has three love pills embedded in it. And now Akane has accidently swallowed the "life" one. And finally, a trip to the circus reunites the gang with Mousse, who now has a Jusenkyo curse of his own... and a new grudge against Ranma.

Ranma doesn't even need to turn into a girl to have romantic complications -- he has enough of them just as a boy. The eighth volume tallies his fiancee count up to three, with poor Ranma not responsible for any of the engagements.

There's plenty of goofy humour in this one, everything from legally blind Mousse kidnapping a stuffed pig to Ryoga almost making out with the disguised Ranma. But it ends on a taut cliffhanger, with Mousse about to turn the captive Akane into a duck, so he can trap Ranma. Somebody get that boy a therapist.

This volume also introduces Ukyo Kuonji, a girl who has been living as a boy for ten years. Ukyo is also Akane's biggest rival: Not only does she have a longer acquaintance with Ranma, but she's also tough, blunt, pretty, a good cook, and far wilier than the brutally ditzy Shampoo. And poor Ryoga gets his feelings played with once again.

One of Rumiko Takahashi's most memorable characters makes her debut in the eighth volume of "Ranma 1/2," bringing even more romantic turmoil in her wake. And it gets even worse...

Funny book, even aside from Ukyo.......2004-03-08

Volume 8(originally vol. 9-10 in Japan) introduces Ukyo Kuonji, an old friend from Ranma's past. As our story progresses, we learn of her engagement to Ranma, and it's soon renewed afterwards, thus leading to Ranma gaining his "cute" fiancee as she's called. Now, if you want me to be honest, I do not like Ukyo. In fact, you could go as far as to say that I hate her. Which is probably why the scene where Ranma pours the hot water over her is my favorite in this. But that's just me. After the her introduction, we go to a few other stories, including her setting up a date between Ryoga and Akane, which is the funniest one(particuarly Ranma and Ryoga's battle at the beginning, it's hilarious), Happosai getting ahold of some love pills that will make anyone who swallows them fall in love with the first person of the opposite gender they see, and the second best in the group, Mousse's return in the series, and as of now he's cursed to turn into a duck when he gets splashed into cold water. That alone has some funny moments, escpecially Mousse's "fight," with a monkey that he mistakes for Ranma. So all in all, another solid volume of Ranma 1/2.

First Okonomiyaki, love pills and now duck water--Ow nooo.......2003-06-01

This book is grate, and its so funny. It starts off by a guy named Ukyo trying to beat up Ranma but to Raman's surprise Ukyo turns out to be a girl and another one of his many fiancée's--go finger. Oh well, if that wasn't enough Akane and Ranma swallowed love pills, but which one has Akane swallowed the Day pill which makes fall in love with the first guy she sees for a day or the life-time pill which you guessed it, would make her fall in love with the first guy she sees for her life-time . Oh well, then you got Ryoga's and Akane's big date, yay. Last but not least well Ranma stop mousse before he sprays Akane with water from the legendary spring of the drowned duck!!!!---read it and find out

Martial Arts Okonomiyaki..........2003-05-30

...now I've seen it all. (Of course, knowing Takahashi, there is probably a LOT more that is stranger than this!) Ukyo Kuonji was a childhood friend of Ranma's, but when he left for China, Ukyo wanted revenge. Armed with flour bombs, deep dish glue, rubber yakisoba noodles, and a human-size (literally) spatula, Ukyo tracks down Ranma and changes him to a fight on a ring surrounded by a hot plate.

But Ukyo is hiding something, and there is something else that Genma Saotome forget to mention to his son...

And Ryoga gets a fiancee!

Okonomiyaki Ukyo rules!.......2003-04-05

By this point in the series, we have seen many bizarre types of martial arts. Ryoga fights with an incredibly heavy umbrella, Azusa and Sanzenin fight and figure skate at the same time, Kodachi uses the tools of rhythmic gymnastics to beat up her opponents, and who could forget the take out race? Well, here's another one to add to the list--fighting with Japanese pizza!

Yep, you heard me. Ukyo Kuonji fights with a special batter that acts like glue, and rubber yakisoba noodles that wind around the opponent, and tempura flakes mixed with gunpowder, and flour bombs. The preferred weapon is a giant spatula, which stands taller than a person, although Ukyo also uses small spatulas almost like ninja stars.

More proof that the mind of Rumiko Takahashi must be a very interesting place!

Soap and the strong man.......2005-09-20

Things get both goofy and serious in the eleventh volume of "Ranma 1/2," Rumiko Takahashi's romance/action series, where Ranma discovers that there is a fate worse than girliness. But first, he has to engage in a battle of wits -- and where Akane is concerned, Ranma might as well have none at all.

As Ranma and Ryoga fight over a love letter at the baths, Shampoo shows up to taunt Akane with her new waterproof soap. But when the soap comes into Ryoga's possession, he finds that he no longer turns into a pig -- and wants to date Akane. Now the desperate Ranma not only wants to steal the soap from Ryoga -- but stop Ryoga's date with Akane.

Then Ranma's ongoing fight with Happosai takes a nasty turn: the old lecher hits Ranma with strength-sapping moxibustion. Now Ranma is as weak as a baby, and his enemies are lining up to kill him. Even worse, the only cure for it is an old pressure-point chart... which Happosai stole a hundred years ago.

With no other choice, Ranma leaves the dojo with his father. Akane is heartbroken -- until she finds that Ranma isn't running away. Instead, he's with ancient martial-artist Cologne, who is going to teach him her ultimate technique: the Heaven Blast of the Dragon...

Expect a heavy dose of screwball comedy in this one, followed by a (gasp!) semi-serious story. And it even ends on a real cliffhanger, with none-too-bright Ryoga ready to break the weakened Ranma's neck. For a very funny misunderstanding. Takahashi balances out the comedy and seriousness perfectly, especially when Ranma is in serious physical danger.

But first, of course, we get the romantic tangles of Ryoga, Shampoo, Akane and Ranma, with Akane stomping off in a snit to date Ryoga, and Ranma desperate to become all-guy at last. This is one of Takahashi's more chaotic romantic stories, and one of the funniest -- especially when Ryoga gets over-amorous with Akane, sending the poor girl running for her life.

And once again, Ranma and Akane keep denying that they are attracted to each other at all. Their actions show what they really think -- the idea of Ryoga dating Akane sends Ranma into a frenzy; when Ranma vanishes, Akane gets depressed and goes after him (only to find him insulting her cooking).

Will Ranma master the Heaven Blast before Ryoga snaps him in half? Unfortunately, you have to check out the next volume to find out the answers, but what an action-packed, kooky ride it is getting there!

I have Ranma1/2 books 3,5 and 6. It's a great book. I want to get more of it. I have videos, pictures and other stuff of anime but when I saw the video I was hooked so go rent videos and books to find out how good it is.

Of all the mangas I've read and all the animes I've seen, Ranma 1/2 is absolutely one of the greatest! It's funny, action packed and there's even romance on the side. It is also very addicting. Once you start reading it, you gotta have it all. A must have for any manga/anime fan!

If you have been following the Ranma 1/2 series (and if you are looking at the twelfth volume you are probably already hopelessly addicted to this outstanding comic) you won't be dissappointed. Ms. Takahashi creates her usual charming stories with the humour we have come to expect.
