Book Description

Approach page design in a revolutionary new way! Unlike other graphic design books, The Elements of Graphic Design reveals the secrets of successful graphic design from the unique perspective of the page's "white space." With the help of carefully selected examples from art, design, and architecture, the role of white space as a connection between page elements is thoroughly explored. Clear, insightful comments are presented in a dynamic page design, and interactive design elements, thought-provoking captions, and scores of illustrations challenge designers to "think out of the box." This unique resource is guaranteed to inspire more creative and thorough thinking.

2 out of 5 stars Visually confusing, the layout makes the content questionable........2007-08-12

The layout of this book is confusing and really, really bad. The content is repetitive and dull, and is very basic. I hope nobody learns to design like the author, his book is a trainwreck.

I like The Non Designer's Design Book for really basic stuff, and I am a huge fan of Designing With Type for typography.

Don't buy this book, it is dissapointing

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-08-09

This book is invaluable for its information. If only one could memorize and master each and every page, one would never have a design problem again. Amazing and concise, the knowledge contained within this book is absolutely wonderful!

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-06-06

Add me to the chorus of naysayers. There are a few good concepts in here, buried in repetitive, obtuse writing and confusing (!) layout.

Some, even many, of the examples are good, but the book is too small in format to do them proper justice. I wouldn't be surprised if White designed the book for a larger size, but it got reduced to cut costs.

I'm a dabbler/hobbyist with a limited design bookshelf, but for what it's worth, I would suggest instead:

The Non-Designer's Design Book -- for a much clearer and more compelling introduction to graphic design basics for novices. Simple and informal, but way more memorable.

Logo Font & Lettering Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to the Design, Construction and Usage of Alphabets and Symbols -- colorful, packed with visual ideas, pure fun.

Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students (Design Briefs) -- much better written, more comprehensive, and better looking "serious" coverage of similar material.

5 out of 5 stars Solid graphic arts reference, not overly trendy .......2007-06-06

Coming from a technical background (and not art school), I was looking for a solid graphic arts intro that had lots of examples. White gives lots of illustrations of the good, bad, and the ugly of graphic arts - as applied to both print and new media. He focuses on the use of white space as an integral part of the overall design; typography is covered in a comprehensible way as well.
A great reference I plan to keep and apply in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-06-03

This is a great book that shows you the essentials of graphic design. There is a lot of information jam packed into this book. There is a nice section in the book that even explains typography. I have been doing a lot of logo competitions and after reading this book my average rating per logo that I design has gone up 1 point which is insane. I recommend this book to everyone!!!!

    Book Description

The United States relied heavily on bombing to defeat the Germans and the Japanese in World War II, and air raids were touted as "precision" bombing in American propaganda. But was precision possible over cloud-covered Europe or a darkened Japanese countryside? Could the vaunted Norden optical bombsight in fact "drop bombs into pickle barrels" as advertised? Were the American aircrews well trained and well protected? How good were their airplanes? What were the results of the costly raids?

This work sets suppositions against facts surrounding the United States' use of strategic bombing in World War II. Chapters cover the events leading up to World War II; the start of the war; the seers and the planners; the airplanes, bombs, bombsights, and aircrews; the planes Germany used to defend itself against American planes; the five cities (Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki) that experienced the most destruction; and the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey of the damage done by aerial bombing.

The book also probes the government's myth-building statements that supported America's view of itself as a uniquely humanitarian nation, and analyzes the role played by interservice rivalry—"battleship admirals" against "bomber generals."

      Book Description

In the late nineteenth century, corporate managers began to rely on photography for everything from motion studies to employee selection to advertising. This practice gave rise to many features of modern industry familiar to us today: consulting, "scientific" approaches to business practice, illustrated advertising, and the use of applied psychology.

In this imaginative study, Elspeth H. Brown examines the intersection of photography as a mass technology with corporate concerns about efficiency in the Progressive period. Discussing, among others, the work of Frederick W. Taylor, Eadweard Muybridge, Frank Gilbreth, and Lewis Hine, Brown explores this intersection through a variety of examples, including racial discrimination in hiring, the problem of photographic realism, and the gendered assumptions at work in the origins of modern marketing. She concludes that the goal uniting the various forms and applications of photographic production in that era was the increased rationalization of the modern economy through a set of interlocking managerial innovations, technologies that sought to redesign not only industrial production but the modern subject as well.

5 out of 5 stars Sunday Peanuts: As It Began.......2000-05-30

Peanuts started in 1950, but didn't show up in the Sunday Paper until 1952. This collection features the early days of Peanuts as they appeared in the Sunday Paper. Lucy tries hard to get Schroeder's attention (but he's not having any of that). Snoopy acts crazy even in the early days (he scratches up an LP record with his teeth, causes the other team a home run, and ruins a nice game of paddleball for his master Charlie Brown, he even has a TV set inside the doghouse). Pig Pen is a mess, and Linus endures Lucy's fussbudget ways or her inane lectures on life. And then there's good old Charlie Brown, who can't get a break on the croquet field, gets stranded on ice and needs a little help from Snoopy, and can't win a game. Classic line used by Charlie: "You drive me crazy!"

5 out of 5 stars Good Grief! Prime Peanuts!.......1999-07-25

Some of the finest work Mr Schulz has done. Hundreds of bitterswet laughs that you've come to expect from the Peanuts gang.

5 out of 5 stars The book that i read was a very interesting book........1999-05-02

Charlie Brown books are a one of a kind story books that every person I know can't stop reading them. I check them out from my local school library every chance that I get.

There Goes the Shutout is from the Classics Peanuts collection by Henry Holt & Co., and contains strips from the early 1950s. Snoopy had big ears and a pointy nose. Lucy is younger (we see her in her crib, and manipulating her parents) and is actually nice to Charlie Brown, although she beats him at checkers. Linus is too young to speak, but he goes "KLUNK" a lot. Violet has pigtails, although there is another character who looks like the Violet we know. It's fun to see the characters looking so young and playing so many games. I own 2 copies of this book, because the first one I got had about 1/4 of the pages from "The Cheshire Beagle" at the beginning (I did not buy it from amazon.com).

Most these letter appear to be in violation of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. I did not find it very useful for anyone trying to run an ethical business.

5 out of 5 stars Found this book to be very helpful........2005-02-16

I purchased this book when I was starting my own collection agency and found many great letters here. I mostly used parts of different letters to create my own, but there were alot of great peices to use together. I liked this book so much I purchased it for a friend of mine who was also starting her own collection agency. I would recommend this book to help you create your own debt collection letters. There is quite a bit of good information in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Very, very basic book.......2004-01-08

Upon receipt of this book I was very, very disapointed.

If you are looking for a collection letter book that gives solid, indepth letters that include FDCPA tags and other inportant collection letter information, this is not the book to buy.

The letters are very basic (people with zero experience might find this to be a starting point) and it glosses over many topics. OR does not address them at all. (If you need letters for accounts more than 90 days past due -- there is no help here.)

I will be very wary of what I buy on Amazon based on this experience. If you are doubtful about buying it -- don't!

                            Amazon.com

Rarely does a day go by when most of us do not have to deal with surly salespeople, cheaply made products, or vast and indifferent bureaucracies. Most of us endure this with a stoicism worthy of Seneca himself. After all, what's the use of complaining? It all seems to fall on deaf ears, anyway.

But the world needn't be like this, according to Ellen Phillips, consumer consultant and founder of Ellen's Poison Pen, Inc. Since 1988, Phillips has been helping frustrated consumers to get refunds and apologies from everyone from the corner druggist to massive insurance agencies. In her book, Shocked, Appalled, and Dismayed!, Phillips shares the secrets of writing letters of complaint that get results. The first few chapters cover the general dos and don'ts of writing effective letters of complaint (remain calm, use polite language), along with useful advice from legal experts (don't embellish, stick to the facts).

The chapters that follow target specific problems we all face at some time in our lives, ranging from getting bumped from a flight to the secrets of successfully dealing with your HMO. Each chapter contains bullet points, illustrative anecdotes, and a number of example letters, most of which were based on actual letters sent on behalf of Phillips's clients. On top of all this, Phillips also provides an appendix listing the names and addresses of over 600 major companies, government agencies, and consumer organizations. Phillips believes that we should get what we pay for, and after reading her book, you'll be able to stand up for your rights with confidence.

                            Book Description

How to get the best of shoddy shops, crooked car-dealerships, and heartless HMOs--without having to hire an attorney.

The Miss Manners of the consumer kvetch shows readers how to go postal, with complaint letters designed to melt the heart and sting the conscience of the most obdurate, negligent, or customer-hostile corporations.

Drawing on her experience as a pen-for-hire for irate consumers--and on the advice of clients, attorneys, and CEOs--Ellen Phillips shows readers:

                            - And--because sometimes the world is on your side--how to write the perfect thank- you note.

Delightfully readable, easy to use, and filled with the addresses of hundreds of corporate customer relations offices and state and federal agencies, Shocked, Appalled, and Dismayed! is an essential resource for anyone who wants to reach out and scold somebody.

Anyone who has made enough transactions with Amazon.com can tell you, Amazon.com has its share of foul-ups. And when mistakes (that are bound to happen from time-to-time) do happen, the biggest errors occur in their customer service department. For me, I know that I have written e-mail after e-mail complaining about RUDE, ERRONEOUS and downright FRAUDULENT communication emanating from the unskilled and unsupervised excuse for a customer service department only to have other unskilled, unsupervised hacks respond. I kept explaining that I was not seeking compensation, I was trying to complain about Amazon.com's customer service, but Amazon.com either doesn't care or doesn't have a mechanism to care. My e-mails which always started, please forward this to so-and-so's supervisor never were. I can't wait for the follow-up to this book. This book is great if you have no idea how to write a complaint letter. However, most of us have common sense, and know how to express that we are "shocked, appalled, and dismayed"! Also, this book discourages the use of certain words and phrases for no other reason than that the author doesn't like them, or thinks they are overused. This book does provide some useful information on how to contact people you may want to send a complaint letter to, but this information can easily be found on the web (for free).

Hire Me, Inc. Resumes and Cover Letters

Here's the secret to getting your foot in the door for the job of your dreams: Market yourself with your resume and cover letter using the same methods a CEO uses to sell his products. Career expert Roy J. Blitzer shows you how to use these tools to stand out as a top candidate that any organization will jump to hire.

Blitzer reveals why standard, template resumes aren't enough. Instead, he shows you how to focus on measurable results and accomplishments to prove your worth and outshine your competition.

Valuable sample resumes, lists of the top action words, exercises and fill-in-the-blank work sheets help you craft a resume that gets you noticed-and hired.

Keeping it short. If you are in the market or thinking about being on the market, worth the investment. Diverse and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Jones' book has made me A LOT of $$$!.......1998-12-15

I read "Business Letters That Get Results" and it TOTALLY revolutionized my writing style and effectiveness. Now, letter writing is a joy! Mr. Jones' easy to read book challenged me to rethink my old ways of letter writing, and his practical "How To's" made it easy for me to say exactly what I needed to say. The bottom line? His approach has helped me distance myself from the competition...(I just hope none of THEM read this!)
