Very goot but................2001-10-10
Look this is a good book and I have enjoyed it but I guess it didn't show what I was looking for in the first place. Having been there before and shortly after the fall of the wall I was really looking for pictures of the area before during and after construction, so I could get some sense of where things were and where they fit in now. Maybe some arial photos of the whole area would have been great. Whilst I have some idea from the book it's all somewhat vague. Otherwise I still found it a good book. I guess I will keep looking for those photos.

A great guide to the rebuilting of this historic square!.......2001-03-15
Prior to World War II, Potsdamer Platz was a bustling square in the heart of Berlin. Heavily damaged during World War II, this center would meet its fate in 1961. Lying on the border between East Berlin and West Berlin, the newly created wall ran right down the center of Potsdamer Platz. The eastern side became a heavily guarded no-mans land, while the western side laid neglected. Imagine the busiest center of the city you live in. Now imagine if it were levelled and left as a wasteland. That was Potsdamer Platz.
As Berlin unified following the fall of the wall, there were many "holes" in its historic center that had to be filled in, Potsdamer Platz was one of those "holes."
This book is packed with historical information on the square, with pictorial illustrations from pre-World War II to the present. It is an important document to the square and Berlin itself.
Following an urban planning/architecture competition where some of the worlds top architects competed to have their designs built, the future of Potsdamer Platz was sealed. Years later, we are seeing the results in action.
This guide is full of pictures and text relating to the new Potsdamer Platz and its future. This square has already re-emerged as a commerical center of Berlin, surrounded by dynamic and stunning post modern buildings, highlighted by the incredibly impressive Sony Center. Spillman makes the good point early in this book that cryptology is not restricted to the current computer era. Prior to computers, many ingenious classical schemes were devised. And the successful cryptographer had to develop an intuition without the aid of a fast computer by her side. Accordingly, Spillman splits his narrative into 3 parts. The first is on classical methods, starting with the Caesar cipher. All these could and were first done without computers.
The second part involves only computer-based ciphers. Notably the public key systems first and still foremost embodied by RSA. He also goes into important related ideas like one way hash functions; explaining the 2 most important, MD5 and SHA-1. Readers should note carefully that if they are faced with a problem where hashing is adequate, instead of needed a full encrypt and decrypt cipher, then they should use hashing. It is far simpler, since it does not involve issues of key management and revocation. And hashing is usually quicker than a full cipher, which is another important advantage.
The last part of the book is rather speculative. It discusses possible future ciphers. Basically, it is about quantum computing. A fundamentally different worldview. The possibilities for vastly more powerful deciphering are explained as a parallel search through a quantum phase space, producing a plaintext observable. However, the current state of achievable lab results is very primitive. Essentially amounting to being able to factor a small number. There are severe problems with quantum decoherence that experimentalists are struggling with. This portion of the book can be read purely as precautionary, at least for the near future. Just something to keep an eye on.
Also worth noting is that the book comes with a CD of custom code. This is called CAP by the book. A program that lets you encipher and decipher text that you can input. The user interface is minimalist, but that is all that is needed. There is a choice of ciphers, as described in the book. Neat way to avoid some of the tedious low level computational steps. It lets you concentrate on understanding a cipher at a higher level, in a modular or object oriented approach. Plus, for those of you who actually dig this field, CAP is fun to play with, while still being extremely educational.

The Chinese-American dream turned nightmare.......2003-04-26
Peter Kwong's "Forbidden Workers" is a powerful analysis of working class struggle in the United States. Mr. Kwong effectively connects his study of labor struggles within the illegal Chinese immigrant community to outside macroeconomic forces. It is the author's contention that the exploitation of illegal workers is key to understanding the restructuring of capital/labor relations within the U.S. in the postindustrial era.
Mr. Kwong is a resident of New York and has close ties to the Chinese community. His solid academic scholarship combines with real-world activism to present a contemporary assessment of illegal Chinese labor. Much of the book is dedicated to then current events (early to mid 1990s), such as the well-known Golden Adventure incident and lesser-known strikes against Chinese-owned businesses, among many others. The author convincingly supplants the mainstream's stereotypical image of docile and complacent Chinese labor with a more complex and disturbing picture of a frightened, indebted and exploited workforce that is barely able to subsist on the fringes of society.
Mr. Kwong's mastery of Chinese-American history is evident throughout the book. He provides the reader with useful background material on a number of relevant events, from the Chinese Labor Exclusion Act of 1882 to the enlistment of Chinese seamen in World War II. The author helps us understand the cultural and economic factors that have prompted many Chinese-Americans to develop thriving but insular and crime-ridden Chinatowns in major cities across the U.S.
The failures of government policy and organized labor are critiqued at length. Mr. Kwong shows how capitalism has effectively co-opted the democratic institutions in this country that are supposed to help the working class. For example, the government's lack of enforcement of labor laws (including, of course, immigration policy) and the union movement's out-of-touch leadership combined with close ties to corporate management are cited as critical factors that explain why labor laws are routinely violated.
Importantly, the author reasserts the dignity of human labor, suggesting that the defense of workers' rights should not come at the risk of deportation. In fact, it is this vulnerability that allows unscrupulous employers to exploit workers with impunity. The resulting worker fear and insecurity has been a crucial factor in helping capital depress wages among all workers, Mr. Kwong explains.
In short, Mr. Kwong's important book does much to explain why the American dream is increasingly becoming a nightmare for the working class in general and particularly among illegal Chinese-Americans. But the author also suggests that a reinvigorated labor movement dedicated to grass-roots democracy can point the way to a better future. I highly recommend this book to readers interested in learning more about labor relations and the Chinese-American struggle.
