Book Description

Christendom is dying and needs to be removed from its life-support system. Starting with this frank assessment of the current church, Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch present an alternative model for ministry in todayÂ's postmodern world. Instead of mourning the demise of the Western church as the center of society, the authors explain how the church can be reborn through incarnational mission, messianic spirituality, and apostolic structure. Church leaders who heed the authorsÂ' call will see death turned into new life through the creation of a vital, missional church.

[Frost and HirschÂ's] contribution brings an in-depth theological reflection as well as providing a broad scope informed by their extensive reading in theology, culture and mission as well as their on-site visits to missional churches in the USA and the United Kingdom.
—Eddie Gibbs, Donald A. McGavran Professor of Church Growth, Fuller Theological Seminary

This book is a bountiful multi-course meal, each serving presented with charm and class. It will satisfy even eclectic appetites, and please the most discriminating palates. Four Stars.

5 out of 5 stars A important work on the missional movement.......2007-08-12

This is a major work in the missional library. The book is deep and insightful to church culture and postmodernity. The book is rich because it deals with more than five steps to be a missional church, but rather teaches the reader to think missionally. Anyone who is concerned about the future path of the church should read this book. It is not a easy read, but must read. Some of the stories are excellent, the insight is fantastic, and the theology is thought provoking. There is some that a reader will disagree with, but overall there is too much good material to pass up not reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Missiology Unbound.......2007-08-03

After getting a degree in missions, this is one of the only books I read about missions. Most books out there now are someone's scant expressions written down quickly before they could forget their organized thoughts on the matter. These guys are extremely well-researched, experience-proven and communicative in a precise yet descriptive manner.

They effectively overhaul the current thinking in church, but they don't leave it there. While it would be easy to merely criticize and leave the reader hopelessly wondering how to react, they propose solutions - something that few emergent church leaders do.

This book is not for new Christians or for people who don't like big words. It's thick, wordy and sometimes scandalous. I read and reread it, and I use it to train leaders who are facing the onslaught of postChristian culture.

Read it, but remember that this isn't the Bible.

If you are involved in any lkind of ministry-which means working with people. Get this book. It will help you come to terms with the world that you are walking in. The one you went to seminary or university is gone-bye bye. Get on your knees to find out what this book has to say to you in your situation.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for serious Christians.......2007-05-15

Reading this book is an eye-opening experience from beginning to end. I have been mired in the politics of the Christian faith for 50 years. The average Christian church today has no resemblance to the ministry of Jesus, nor the first century church that His Apostles established. This book helps to reveal the hypocrisy of our present day church leaders, who are running their organizations like corporate businesses, rather than missions seaching for lost souls. Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch are to be commended for the outstanding way they not only outline the problems of the present day church, but by offering solutions of how to return to the mission that Christ and the Apostles intended for us.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient / Postmodern Christianity at It's Best.......2007-05-15

This book paints a beautiful picture of the emerging western culture that stands on thorough biblical exegesis, theological reflection, historical precedent, and cultural insight. It's required reading for any student seeking to gain a better grasp of the nuances and opportunities of contemporary culture and Christianity. BUT BEWARE!!! After reading it, I found myself personally convicted that I could no longer continue on in the institutional context of parish ministry that's defined my vocation for more than a decade. It wrecked me in the most liberating of ways and I hope it does the same for all who read it.

Book Description

"Shaping Things is about created objects and the environment, which is to say, it's about everything," writes Bruce Sterling in this addition to the Mediawork Pamphlet series. He adds, "Seen from sufficient distance, this is a small topic."

Sterling offers a brilliant, often hilarious history of shaped things. We have moved from an age of artifacts, made by hand, through complex machines, to the current era of "gizmos." New forms of design and manufacture are appearing that lack historical precedent, he writes; but the production methods, using archaic forms of energy and materials that are finite and toxic, are not sustainable. The future will see a new kind of object -- we have the primitive forms of them now in our pockets and briefcases: user-alterable, baroquely multi-featured, and programmable -- that will be sustainable, enhanceable, and uniquely identifiable. Sterling coins the term "spime" for them, these future manufactured objects with informational support so extensive and rich that they are regarded as material instantiations of an immaterial system. Spimes are designed on screens, fabricated by digital means, and precisely tracked through space and time. They are made of substances that can be folded back into the production stream of future spimes, challenging all of us to become involved in their production. Spimes are coming, says Sterling. We will need these objects in order to live; we won't be able to surrender their advantages without awful consequences.

The vision of Shaping Things is given material form by the intricate design of Lorraine Wild. Shaping Things is for designers and thinkers, engineers and scientists, entrepreneurs and financiers -- and anyone who wants to understand and be part of the process of technosocial transformation.

5 out of 5 stars Techno-futuristic ruminations on "spimes" and sustainability.......2007-08-31

Type a few words into Google and you can find a sushi restaurant, a movie theater, concert tickets or a new car. But if you misplace your car keys in your house, you still have to search the old-fashioned way: room by room, cushion by cushion, coat pocket by coat pocket. If Bruce Sterling is correct, though, one day you'll Google your keys. And your shoes. And your dog. This is the nascent "Internet of things" made possible by technology, including such items as radio frequency ID tags and traceable product life cycle management. That is where technology is going: to the interactive "spime," Sterling's term for objects that will arrive with data attached. In this visually arresting novella-sized essay, Sterling riffs on a number of scenarios, from customized-to-order cell phones to products that "know" how much carbon their construction required. His aphoristic prose seems at times like madness, but there's method in it: Sterling urges designers to make beautifully sustainable products rather than more proto-trash. We believe his book could reform your ideas about design and provide a stock of carbon-neutral insights you can deliver to your colleagues over a recyclable cup filled with shade-grown coffee.

2 out of 5 stars This book is a little too short. .......2007-08-08

This book is 'wafer thin', I would recommend John ThakorsIn the Bubble: Designing in a Complex World instead, it is goes into a lot more depth, but is still a sci-fi.

5 out of 5 stars A tool, in a way..........2007-07-19

This is such a short read, and such a good read - it really is a tool, more of a reminder. The way some people put a model of their dream car on their desk, to remind them their goal, this book should be kept around, read once or twice a year to remind oneself to put purpose, intelligence, and diligence into what you create. I think I'll start giving copies of this to new employees...

5 out of 5 stars Setting the agenda.........2006-12-15

If you're looking for a book on sustainable design, the intertwining of the informational and the material, and RFID, look no further.

Sterling's account is more than a book for designers. Though some angles tend to originate from design-related topics, the implications and responsibilities pertaining to design cannot belong to a community of designers per se.

That's a pretty self-evident idea of course, but allow me to elucidate.

When Sterling argues that "we need a designed metahistory", this pertains to the idea that the information that is related to objects / spimes / shaping things needs to be designed. Given the fact that more and more objects are tagged, and thereby enrolled in a global information architecture, this implies that 'design' has the ability to influence the way we relate to object-data.

And this is by no means a scenario that is sci-fi: take the EPCglobal architecture as an example. Sterling is perfectly aware of this.

For me, the book provided a framework in which many more things can be deployed.. But I suppose the book's effects will depend on the mindset of the reader. The capacity of the book to create new concepts and new levels of thought is obviously there. To me, the ability of a written work to do this is what makes a book great.

5 out of 5 stars important work for more than just designers..........2006-06-05

...or perhaps it's just that "design" is an extremely broad category. Sterling presents a futurity that is at once realistic and utopian, frightening and hopeful.

This book would be useful for not just anyone designing anything, but anyone concerned with the future, how to achieve real sustainability, or how all that geeky stuff (you occasionally read about in the Wired you pick up at the airport) will really effect you.

I agree with another reviewer that the actual print design of the book is a hindrance, which is ironic; my distaste for it was only made worse by having already heard Sterling brag on it during a talk. But even with this beef, I have to give it a full five stars based on the content alone.

                      Book Description

Hey, goomba! Are you on the Goomba Diet? Do you need to be?

                      • Do they put up crime scene tape after you visit the buffet table?

                      • Is the air freshener in your car a slice of provolone?

Stop crying! The Goomba Diet is here—the dolce vita diet that shows you how to eat more, drink more, laugh more, live more, and feel great while you’re doing it. The Goomba Diet offers sensible weight-loss tips for the guy who’s gone too far:

                      • Touch your toes. If this is difficult, pay a guy to do it for you.

                      • Walk to court.

It also offers helpful maintenance tips for the goomba who’s the perfect weight and wants to stay that way:

                      • Try an appetite suppressant. Try eating at Applebee’s.

                      • Pick up something heavy. Get a copy of The Da Vinci Code.

                      • Cut out those carbs. Only eat pastas that end in the letter i.

The Goomba Diet is the personal lifestyle guide from Steven R. Schirripa—Bobby “Bacala” Baccalieri from HBO’s hit series The Sopranos and author of the bestseller A Goomba’s Guide to Life. Developed over decades of dreaming about and then living the high life, it’s a how-to guide for happy living—how to duke a maître d', how to order a good meal, how to be a good father, a good husband and a good friend, and how to behave at a wedding, a funeral, and on the job. You wanna have a good time? Follow these rules:

                      • Do tip the maid. Don’t tip the made guy.

                      • Do tip the D.J. Don’t tip the D.A.

                      • Do tell the bride she’s beautiful. Don’t tell her she’s hardly showing.

                      • Do give your kids an allowance. Don’t offer to “make it interesting” by shooting craps for double or nothing.

The Goomba Diet is for everyone with an appetite for life, and for everyone who understands that the key to happiness isn’t found in a smaller waistline but in a bigger heart. Like Steve says, “There’s a lot of skinny actors wearing black turtlenecks and tending bar right now who’d kill for a part on The Sopranos. This fat goomba is doing all right for himself.”

So relax! Stop worrying about how much you’re eating, and start worrying about how much you’re enjoying it. Lose weight if you like—but live! Put a fork in your right hand, a hunk of bread in your left, and mangia like you mean it.

HBO® and The Sopranos® are service marks of Time Warner Entertainment Company, L.P.

I'm sitting here in a double knit shirt , eating a mortadella and salami sandwich reconnecting with my Goomba roots after reading this. Right on the money for all the east coast Italian guys out there who grew up hanging around Goombas. You know who you are...pick this up and get real. You will immediately crave a big italian dinner, among other things.

Steve Schirripa's new book kept me laughing the entire time! In an age of celebrity diets and exercise programs, it is a needed relief! Great book!!

                      5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Sporano's Fans.......2006-05-15

I just finished reading Steve Schirripa's new book "The Goomga Diet". The book is a hilarious, insightful and interesting look at one man's experience as an Italian-American and, of course, is a must read for fans of The Sopranos.

5 out of 5 stars Best Trilogy Since "Lord of The Rings".......2006-05-15

Steve Schirripa's "The Goomba Diet" does for Italian cuisine what "The Da Vinci Code" does for Catholicism -- the only difference is that once the Pope reads Schirripa's book, he's going to make Steve an official Saint. Following in the tradition of his previous literary masterpieces, ("The Goomba's Guide to Life" and "The Goomba's Guide to Love") Schirripa has accomplished the impossible by writing a book that's even funnier than his first two. Whether you're Italian or Jewish, fat or thin, heterosexual or a fanook, "The Goomba Diet" delivers a powerful message from which the world can benefit. And by "the world", I mean overweight Italian criminals indicted under the RICO Statute who enjoy Penne Arrabiata. Not only is "The Goomba Diet" superior to any book currrently on the New York Times bestseller list, but it proves why Steve Schirripa deserves to host his own late night network television talk show -- he's far more talented than Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daly, and or that annoying Scottish guy on CBS. And if boring idiots like "Jerry R. from Montreal" like this book, then it can be enjoyed by EVERYONE.

5 out of 5 stars The Goomba Diet brings back the smell of my Grandma's kitchen.......2006-05-15

I loved this book and refer back to it often! The recipes, stories and humor are savory treats that satisfy the stomach and the mind! We should all (As the author recommends) live large and love it!

                          Book Description

This book is an authoritative, comprehensive guide to labor inspection and its fundamental principles. It presents policy issues in an international context, while examining how the major, foreseeable developments in economics, the labor market, and technology—as well as national, sectoral, and enterprise social structures—affect labor inspection.

Taking into account substantial new developments and major changes in the field, this volume looks at what has occurred in both the policy and practice of labor inspection in the 21st century. It explores the often entirely new systems and strategies that have surfaced, such as "internal control" in the Nordic countries and the merger of parts of social insurance (worker's compensation) with inspection services (in Australia and New Zealand), and explains how these, and other practices, may benefit countries in similar situations.
