Book Description
Every spring for the last 18 years, the Architectural League of New York has invited young architects from around the world to submit their portfolios to be selected as the best of a new generation of talent. The Young Architects program has identified many of the best-known names in architecture today, including Steven Holl, Neil Denari, Billie Tsien, and Carlos Jimenez. This year's honorees are six young practices whose projects range in scale from an intimate theater to a floating football stadium.. The firms are: Douglas Pancoast, Vrinda Khanna and Robert Schultz, Sunil Bald and Yolande Daniels, Edward Mitchell, Omar Khan and Laura Garófalo, and Shih-Fu Peng and Róisín Heneghan.?
This colorful title, the first to come out of the Young Architects program, includes photographs of built work, computer renderings, drawings, diagrams, and text, all in an inspiring mix of fresh ideas and creative vision. An introductory essay by Nina Rappaport provides an overview of current state of architectural practice.?
Future volumes of Young Architects will appear annually; these titles will serve as a guide to tomorrow's architectural luminaries.
Customer Reviews:
Young Architects: Scale - The measure of Architectural Imagination.......2007-09-14
The first volume of the book series dedicated to show casing emerging talents via winners of the Architectural League of New York - Young Architects Forum.
The book begins with The Connections Theatre by Douglas Pancoast, an installation constructed in the extended Cranbrook Institute of Science, Detroit in Michigan (by Steven Holl Architects). The Theatre creates a treshhold and mediation between the tectonics of architecture and emerging digital technologies...
Skipping from the public realm the next project by Sunil Bald and Yolande Daniels delves into the most personable of activities a pissoir for women, proposing an architecture of space and outfit... an outfit and situation that in this case the animated Aeon Flux character would most certainly be enamoured with.
Further architectural propositions range from extensions to residences to Hawk and Falcon Preserves to constructed naratives from real time video performance to floating Football Stadia...
A good book to have on the shelves to take down once and a while for an inspirational flick thru.

Book Description
Situated in the South Texas borderlands some fifty miles west of Corpus Christi, San Diego was a thriving town already a hundred years old at the turn of the twentieth century. With a population that was 90 percent Mexican or Mexican American and 10 percent Anglo, the bicultural community was the seat of Duval County and a prosperous town of lumberyards, banks, mercantile stores, and cotton gins, which also supplied the needs of area ranchers and farmers. Though Anglos dominated its economic and political life, San Diego was culturally Mexican, and Mexican Americans as well as Anglos built successful businesses and made fortunes.
This collection of nearly one hundred photographs from the estate of amateur photographer William Hoffman captures the cosmopolitan town of San Diego at a vibrant moment in its history between 1898 and 1909. Grouped into the categories women and their jobs, local homes, men and their businesses, children at school and church, families and friends, and entertainment about town, the photos offer an immediate visual understanding of the cultural and economic life of the community, enhanced by detailed captions that identify the subjects and circumstances of the photos. An introductory historical chapter constitutes the first published history of Duval County, which was one of the most important areas of South Texas in the early twentieth century.

GREAT BOOK.......2007-03-13
Great material, helpful information. It is a somewhat heavy read, but that is to be expected with the material it is covering. My only complaint would be that the paper the pages are printed on is thin and prone to getting bent etc.

Thought provoking, helpful and practical.......2006-08-06
Dr. Anderson provides his readers with a very readable and helpful book - one that you wish to read more than once at different stages of your work with younger people and your own development. He gives his readers helpful insights and is intellectually stimulating. His ideas on how to work with young writers as well as ways to explore the issues that they are encountering is very helpful. He provides you with suggestions and makes you want to delve deeper into working to help younger writers write and he shows how the conference method is a very successful vehicle. Carl Anderson stimulates you to want to explore the theoretical bases for his apporaches that are provided as references. His second book is a brilliant follow-up to this one and truly helpful to both educators and those committed to supporting the learning process.

Product Description
The 1999 edition of the guidebook provides ideas and tools for teaching and assessing beginning writers. It is designed to help primary teachers put content, voice, and purpose ahead of mechanics when assessing students' writing, using the Six-Trait WritingTM model. Children move through several stages in learning to write, from readiness exhibited by scribbles; through drawing, dictation, and copying; first efforts to form words; and more lengthy and complex writing efforts such as poems and stories. The book includes a continuum of writing skills detailing how children move through these stages as they progress from kindergarten through second grade. Also included is a rubric that spells out the criteria for good writing and guides teachers in observing the growth of young writers.

Book Description
Assessing Writing Across the Curriculum offers guidelines for effective assessment of student writing performance in various content areas such as English, science, mathematics and social studies at the junior or senior high school level. The book suggests a change in teaching methodology in order to make writing a key part of the instructional process. Written by teachers, it offers examples of applications and tools for assessment, concluding with a list of additional resources for further research.
Assessing Writing Across the Curriculum addresses issues such as assignment design, communication of expectations, scoring rubric design, and student involvement in writing assessment. It emphasizes writing to learn versus writing to test. This change in emphasis allows the student to understand how writing can contribute to his or her thinking and learning about a subject. The book utilizes the knowledge editors Duke and Sanchez have accumulated in directing National Writing Project sites and in their extensive in-service work on writing assessment with teachers.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2006-03-22
If you work in education and have any involvement or interest with designing curriculum, this is an essential source. Highly reccommended.

Book Description
This is the first volume to focus on the assessment of second language writing. The collection as a whole provides coverage of all issues in second language writing assessment, starting from the context in which and for which assessment must occur, moving through the aspects of decision-making and design in a writing assessment program, and then considering how the need to evaluate any program on assessment can be carried out. After a discussion of issues of public reporting, an area which will receive increasing attention in the next few years, the volume closes with a discussion of what new issues and answers the future may bring. The book reflects the current belief in direct writing assessment in second language writing assessment. While it is often expected that those working with ESL students will focus on language error, throughout the book themes of needs, attitudes, ideas and content dominate. For second language writers the use of written language to learn, to create knowledge and to share ideas and beliefs are vitally important. Additionally, issues of cross-cultural academic literacy, practical information on criteria and scoring models for use with ESL writers, and research on the efficacy and effects of various assessment models are provided. The book blends theory and practice in a way which offers all those who are concerned with the writing skills of nonnative users of English an invaluable resource.
