5 out of 5 stars Thick as a Brick and Packed.......2005-05-12

This book is everywhere, in every kind of store imagineable, and it's always well-thumbed. That's because it's irresistible. Hanky Panky has drawn from his enormous photo collection and given us 1000 tattoos -- of all types, including some historical shots. One of the most bizarre tattoos that I have ever seen is in this book (the topless woman who has a tattoo on her upper chest and collar bone of a necklace of dangling male members -- each male member tattooed with a different theme). In the past, this book has been out of print, so get it while you can.

4 out of 5 stars agreablement surprise.......2004-08-04

Je suis tres contente, l'expedition est un peu lente (1 mois) mais le livre est arrivé en bonne etat. Si j'ai a commander a nouveau aupres de powelle et je le ferai sans crainte. Merci

4 out of 5 stars Very cool book, but some shortcomings..........2004-02-20

I really enjoy this book and never get tired of perusing it, but it is very heavy on old school designs with very little modern stuff to chew on. I love the old tattoo photos from the early 20th century, and a lot of the black and white shots of oldies like Les Skuse at work. A great photographic history, indeed.

Again, the only real shortcoming is the lack of modern designs, but it makes up for it with all of the great old school photos. A great resource to have as a compliment to other books and manuals.

2 out of 5 stars Historically, this is very interesting, but. . ........2003-06-06

This book lacks a lot. First, it does not address many of the pre-eminent tattooists of the recent past and present. For example, there is no Guy Aitchison, no Aaron Cain, no Dan Hazelton, etc. People like this have been essential to the recent developments of the tattoo. Second, as one of the reviewers below notes, there is not much in the way of written history here. That is both good and bad since it is nice to have all these pictures, but I found my self wanting explanations and background. Third, many of the photos in this book are downright unpleasant in the aesthetic sense. In other words, they depict awful tattoos on people that I don't really want to see naked. I know this is part of the history, but I don't really need to see a close up some guy's private parts tattooed with a devil head. I'm not a prude, but I certainly prefer the more stylish pictures that many of the tattoo magazines offer (especially International Tattoo Art).

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad resource, but not everything I wanted..........2002-07-01

First of all, this book DOES give a bit of the fascinating background of tattooing through the ages. It also DOES give plenty of photographs (~90-95% of the book).

However, it does not give much in the way of explanation of where the modern styles developed. It also spends the majority of its pages on "Old School" flash, opting to only show modern tattoos in the last 5-10% of the book. Also, MANY of the photographs are in black and white, so you can't get a good feel for the use of color on a lot of them.

All in all, this is a good resource. It shows a lot of tattoos, but information-wise, it's a little thin.

4 out of 5 stars Textile Dyeing.......2006-03-13

a great reference book covering many aspects of dyeing. Gives plenty of detail and recipes.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for novice or master textile lover........2003-01-09

If you are the least bit interested in the how to and how not to aspects of dying fabrics of all types this book will be one you will want to add to your home library. Even though I have been doing textile art for ages, even I learned a few things from the book.

The book will be one that novice or master should enjoy and pretty much covers all types of fabrics from knobby to smooth as well as why some dyes set up well on one type of texture and not so well on another.

If you love to sew or have a streak of clothing adventure check the book out and discover the pleasures of making some special clothes for yourself. And the price is excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to many dyeing techniques, great dye mixology.......2001-04-30

This book presents a great introduction to many different dyeing techniques using either fiber-reactive or acid dyes. The numerous galleries throughout the book will help inspire you.

The book starts out with a great explanation of the types of dyes, paints and pigments available. It then covers techniques and tools including good safety advice and fabric preparation. Tips for over-dyeing, stitching and direct application are here too.

Next, thickened dyes, gutta and watercolor techniques are used to create painterly effects. Tied-resists follow including finger-pleated silk and nouveau shibori. Then batik, block- printing and marbling are taught. The instructions are excellent with detailed step-by-step processes accompanied by photos. However, be aware the projects here teach techniques. There are no templates or the like so it would be nearly impossible to create an item identical to the ones in the book.

The best part of the book is the chapter on color theory and dye mixology. It thoroughly explains the cryptic instructions that come with dyes and how to create your own recipe card.

The galleries are awesome. There is one for each section and each includes at least eight different artists displaying their work with the basic techniques used. A directory of all the artists including phone numbers is included in the appendix along with lists of supplies, schools that have degree textile programs and a glossary of terms.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but could have been better.......2004-10-29

The first thing that I noticed about this book is it had a lot of pictures and not alot of info on how to airbrush t-shirts. However I did find the book useful in creating new designs and to know what needed to be done and in what order. Over all it is a good book to get you exited about airbrushing on textiles but doesn't give you enough information on on to do it.

Shakespeare's in love, perchance, in this rollicking send-up of the Age of Elizabeth.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Much funnier than Shakespeare in Love.......2003-11-08

This novel jumbles up a host of characters from the Elizabethan Age in golorious confusion. Shakespeare trying to write his masterpiece 'Love's Labour's Won' and trying to decide how to spell his name, Sir Walter Raleigh desperate to get a new cloak and introduce the Potato at court, Francis Bacon scheming to get his hands on one of Queen Elizabeth's used beds, the Queen herself trying not to make up her mind about anything. Fictional characters mingle with the real ones, particularly Viola, the lady-in-waiting in love with the theatre and wanting to be a player, disguising herself as a boy so she can join Shakespeare's company and then falling in love with him. Sounds familiar? Yes, but Brahms and Simon did it first, and funnier.

4 out of 5 stars Whimsical delight from Shakespeare's London.......2001-05-04

This enchanting little novel, first published in 1941, traces the intertwining adventures of Shakespeare's theater company and Elkizabeth's court, mingling historical figures and charmingly imagined fictions. Shakespeare, intent on his new play, Love's Labors Wonne, can't be bothered to pay attention to the new production of Henry VIII. Sir Francis Bacon dances around the outskirts of the theater, while parsimonious Lord Burghley and ambitious Sir Walter Raleign pursue their own schemes. Dagglebelt the jester tries (unsuccessfully) to juggle pumpkins while Will Kempe discovers with delight the comic possibilities of a pail of whitewash dumped over Richard Burbage's unsuspecting head. To the modern reader there are all sorts of hints of the film, Shakespeare in Love, but this book was written more than fifty years earlier, and has an air of lunatic delight all its own.

            Amazon.com

This is a thoughtful, impressively researched book, unusual in its perspective and organization. In separate chapters, Michael Musgrave presents Johannes Brahms the man, friend, and colleague, as well as the student, composer, performer, and scholar, in his private life and public life, drawing on his own words and those of his friends and contemporaries. The final section is devoted to the critical and public reception of his works, beginning in his lifetime and reaching into the present, in an attempt to place the composer in the proper historical context. The text is supplemented by many pictures and voluminous notes adding further quotes and listing sources and bibliographies.

Musgrave discusses Brahms's growing up, his early training and later self-education, the development of his artistic and compositional aesthetic. "The Mature Compositional Outlook" chapter, which includes ideas on teaching, is one of the best. The author describes Brahms's loving relationship with his family, and he refutes the popular misconception that Brahms was forced at an early age to perform in disreputable establishments. Musgrave presents the composer's many close, lifelong friendships as evidence of the man's innate kindness and generosity, but he doesn't gloss over Brahms's frequent outbursts of abrasiveness and unpredictability. To his great credit, Musgrave places Brahms's relationship with Clara Schumann in the noblest, most ideal light, quoting from her diaries and letters, without any of the usual hints and innuendos. He traces Brahms's growing interest in scholarship, art, and literature, his travels, his friendship with leading artists and writers, and his relationships with other musicians and composers.

After Brahms's brief youthful attack on Liszt's music, the famous feud between his school of thought and those of Wagner, Liszt, and Bruckner was carried on mainly by followers of the two camps. Partisanship often replaced musical judgment: the reviews of Brahms's music by both admirers and detractors reveal the arrogance with which a new, complex work was evaluated--and condemned--upon first hearing. But it is the analyses of the musicians and especially the musicologists of our own time that become truly arcane: "Subjectification and objectification are intertwined." Or: "The subjective approach to composition forces the conventional language to speak again, without varying it by means of its intervention as language." (Theodore Adorno). What would Brahms, in his uninhibited bluntness, have said to that?

The book's style is scholarly, if not always elegant or entirely clear. There are many careless errors of spelling and grammar, notably in the German quotes, which multiply progressively, as if the author (or his proofreader) were running out of time. The notes elucidating Brahms's collection of romantic poetry quote the original German, which is delightful for German readers, but shows up the inadequacy of the translation. Musgrave's avowed purpose is to "integrate" the contradictions in Brahms's character and music, but by focusing on each aspect of his life separately, he creates further fragmentation, as well as some chronological confusion, repetition, and abruptness. Moreover, surely such contradictions are a condition of life, especially for a creative genius whose need for both solitary concentration and human companionship must be satisfied and balanced with the demands of a career and everyday living. Only in his work can he reconcile and synthesize his conflicts, and in this, Brahms succeeded magnificently. --Edith Eisler

            Book Description

This engaging account of the life of Johannes Brahms provides a fuller portrait of the German composer than ever before. Eminent Brahms scholar Michael Musgrave draws on a wide array of documentation to illuminate Brahms's personality; his outlook as a composer; his activities as pianist, conductor, scholar, and traveler; his friendship with Robert and Clara Schumann; and much more.

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of Sagan's literature.......1999-03-10

The light and sorrow of Francoise Sagan literature makes its own very special world.

Extremely sophisticated and at the same time much comprehensive it gives you a chance to elaborate your own steps, conclusions within the web of the main characters relationship.

It is all about love and people, their choices and consequiences, their desires and real acceptances, their abilities to go on... If you are still a romantic soul despite the reality of life and believe in a very strong, very emotional and passionate feelings and most important believe in people who dare to be outlaws of the society in expressing those feelings, you will be an eternal admirer of Madame Sagan's beautiful prose.

I would also strongly reccomend to read other books by Madame Sagan.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Sad Tale of Unsuited Lovers........1998-11-20

A beautiful story of the futility of loving an unsuitable partner, and the pressures that society places on a relationship. The heroine is torn between a stable yet unfullfilling relationship and a passionate but unconventional relationship.

The inevitability of the outcome makes the tender moments enjoyed by the couple all the more precious.

A thoroughly enjoyable read which prompts the question of "How much of an individual dare we be?".

                      5 out of 5 stars Freakin' hilarious!!!!.......2004-12-22

Sean's stuff is freakin' hilarious!!! Some of his takes on celebrities are totally out of left field, like the columns on whether or not Keanu Reeves is the messiah or if Ricky Martin is secretly Rick Springfield after top secret plastic surgery. The guy has a unique sense of humor, kind of like Monty Python, but also with that Letterman type of sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek wit. I bought this book first and then went out and got his other books and I haven't been disappointed. All of his stuff is really good. Definitely, if you're into Carlin, Jon Stewart, Python, Letterman, you'll really like Leary's stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Very hilarious and imaginative, very highly recommended!!.......2003-08-10

Leary's columns are hilarious and imaginative takes on pop culture. In one, he theorizes Ricky Martin and Rick Springfield are the same person; in another, he writes about a (I hope) ficticious cult group of former Deadheads that now follow John Tesh; in another, he gives ``proof'' that Keanu Reeves is the messiah; and on and on. In all, it's witty, clever stuff. Given his talent and intelligence, I'm amazed Sean hasn't reached a larger national audience yet. Check this guy out now while he's a ``cult'' phenom before he inevitably takes off. This guy is really a gifted writer.

                      5 out of 5 stars Poetrychick.......2002-02-13

This is a great book for anyone who appreciates a dry wit and intelligent sense of humor. I agree with the other reviewer who compares his writing with Dave Barry but "less wacky." Rather than write about family and chores, Leary's focus is more broad, encompassing the media and pop culture. A very fun read. The illustrations are cool, too! I bet Bill Douglas does great comic-style work, too.

                      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......1999-12-22

This is a FANTASTIC book. I've read Sean's column for years, and was delighted when he decided to publish a book with some of his greatest columns. Sean's command of the English Vocabulary is simply amazing. He has a way of phrasing words and sentences that will leave you in awe, wondering "How does he come up with that?"

If you are a Dave Berry fan, this book is a MUST-BUY! I think that Sean is far more talented than Dave is, not to mention just a tad less wacky. Dave, I think, writes more for the older generation, where-as Sean is more into Pop Culture and is more in tune with what is popular and current. Plus, Sean has a lot of insight and knowledge of just about anything pertaining to the entertainment world. You can't help but from laughing out loud when you read this book. For example, one of my favorite columns in the book is called, "Behold the Power of Candy". He was writing a spoof on candy becoming a super drug. Here is an excerpt... It all started with a tiny mint call Mento's. The Mentos commercials chronicle several dorks who find themselves in circumstances that would twist the mind of David Lynch.... Not all of the columns are humorous ones, there are some serious ones but the majority are funny. He begins with an amazing column that he wrote when he was 7, then ends with a spoof on VH1's "Behind the Music". Also, throughout the book he has little snippets of background information that gives you a little bit of behind the scenes.

Yes, I highly suggest buying this book. The price is right and you will NOT be disappointed I can promise you that! And if this book doesn't at the very minimum leave you with a smile on your face, then I guess you will need to be visited by "Foolish Jack"!

5 out of 5 stars A Columnist for Folks in their 20s and 30s.......1999-12-21

Now younger (twenties and thirties) readers have a columnist who can speak to their age range. Sean's always funny, and at times he's hilarious! Sean's columns are hip and poke pointed but affectionate fun at lots of society's weirdisms. A cool book! Sean's column runs in the Midwest, but you don't have to be an Iowan like me to enjoy this book. Someday this guy will probably be national.

                        Book Description

This work explores three key topics in social psychology: the manner in which labor unions shape organizational behavior, a relationship which has been effectively ignored in the literature; the organization of the union itself, a fascinating test case for the organizational psychologist; and the way in which theories and methods of organizational psychology may assist labor organizations in achieving their goals. Since the union maintains unique characteristics of democracy, conflict, and voluntary participation within a larger organization, the authors offer a detailed study of a union's dynamics, including demographic and personality predictors of membership, voting behavior, union commitment and loyalty, the nature of participation, leadership styles, collective bargaining, among other topics. This is the first book to be published in the new Industrial/Organizational Psychology Series. It will be of interest to not only industrial/organizational psychologists in industry, academia, and private and public organizations, but to graduate students in psychology departments and business schools, and to academics and professionals in business and management studying industrial relations.
