Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A master at work.......2006-07-15

This is a great book by Stephen Quiller who is a master artist in acrylic. His books explains all about how he accomplishes that with ease. For me, the impressionistic paintings are a beauty to behold and I've admired Quiller's work for years and now I know how he does it.

3 out of 5 stars Dont expect to much.......2005-04-14

I should have read the reviews more carefully. The author does mostly introduce its own style. Yes, the colorwheel is useful. But most of the techniques are kind of special and in my opinion it is a matter of taste if you like to use them. As much as you might like the authors paintings - or not. What I found very nice about the book is the introduction and the thorough coverage of the media and all its 'helpers'.

Anyhow, if you are looking for an introduction to acrylic painting with some step-by-step examples and useful hints, this is most likely not the right book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the beginning acrylic artist.......2004-03-30

I found this book to be very helpful in experimenting with new ideas for my paintings. However, it is not for the beginning artist. This book shows various techniques but it won't show you how to paint a picture step by step

4 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promises.......2003-07-09

Despite what other reviewers apparently think, this is a book about techniques: applying watercolor techniques or oil techniques to acrylics, making use of gels, using metallics, painting transparently or opaquely, and so on. And as such, the book succeeds quite well. Quiller's style has nothing at all to do with the techniques themselves; he isn't saying "paint like me!" He is simply showing his own examples -- lots of great examples -- of the techniques he presents. If you want a book that tells you how to paint in a particular style, this isn't the book for you. But if you want a good source of techniques that can be applied to acrylics -- using your own style of painting -- this book delivers.

2 out of 5 stars One trick pony.......2002-01-12

This book contains a good color wheel and some useful discussion about material, but that's about it. The art is extremely idiosyncratic, stylized, and modern, and it is not very appealing. What's more, it appears that the author only has command of one style/genre, and that won't be of much help people who are trying to learn. Spend your money on The North Light Book of Acrylic Painting Techniques instead.

        Book Description

Local television newscasts around the country look alike and are filled with crime, accidents, and disasters. Interviews with more than 2,000 TV journalists around the country demonstrate that news looks this way because of the ingrained belief that ‘eye-ball grabbers’ are the only way to build an audience. This book contradicts the conventional wisdom using empirical evidence drawn from a five-year content analysis of local news in more than 154 stations in 50 markets around the country. The book shows that ‘how’ a story is reported is more important for building ratings than what the story is about. Local TV does not have to ‘bleed to lead’. Instead local journalists can succeed by putting in the effort to get good stories, finding and balancing sources, seeking out experts, and making stories relevant to the local audience.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be enriched and inspired by these wonderful tales........1998-12-10

Faith Middleton, host of a very popular call-in show on Connecticut Public Radio, has assembled an extraordinary collection of her caller's stories, about good deeds that happen every day, but get ignored by a media obsessed with bad news.

Particularly moving and important is the chapter on Faith's monthly Alcoholics Anonymous call-in meeting. If you know anyone with a drinking problem who's still denying that it exists, you might want to give them this book.

          Book Description

This volume offers an analysis of crime coverage on local television, exploring the nature of local television news and the ongoing appeal of crime stories. Drawing on the perspectives of media studies, psychology, sociology, and criminology, authors Jeremy H. Lipschultz and Michael L. Hilt focus on live local television coverage of crime and examine its irresistibility to viewers and its impact on society's perceptions of itself. They place local television news in its theoretical and historical contexts, and consider it through the lens of legal, ethical, racial, aging, and technological concerns.

In its comprehensive examination of how local television newsrooms around the country address coverage of crime, this compelling work discusses such controversial issues as the use of crime coverage to build ratings, and considers new models for reform of local TV newscasts. The volume includes national survey data from news managers and content analyses from late night newscasts in a range of markets, and integrates the theory and practice of local television news into the discussion. Lipschultz and Hilt also project the future of local television news and predict the impact of social and technological changes on news.

As a provocative look at the factors and forces shaping local news and crime coverage, Crime and Local Television News makes an important contribution to the discussions taking place in broadcast journalism, mass communication, media and society, and theory and research courses. It will also interest all who consider the impact of local news content and coverage.

3 out of 5 stars Good synopsis of the early years of television.......1999-03-14

My father was one of the sources quoted in the book and I have heard many stories similar to those outlined. I also worked part time (volunteer work) at the station in later years and see strong similarities. It's a solid working man's view of how things got done early in the formative years. I recommend it for those aspiring television journalists/producers/engineers who need humbled after being exposed to today's technological advances

            Book Description

Public broadcasting has changed dramatically since its founding in 1967. The growing equation of marketplace efficiency with the public interest has, in Tom McCourt's analysis, undermined the value of public goods and services. In addition, political and cultural discourse is increasingly beset by fragmentation. Public radio provides an exemplary site to examine the prospects and problems of contemporary public life. Beginning with a description of the events that led to the creation of National Public Radio, McCourt discusses the relationship between NPR and its affiliate stations and the ways in which struggles over funding and programming have affected public radio's agenda. He also examines how public radio incorporates the roles of public representatives into its operations and how its methods to determine the needs and interests of the public have changed across the system's history. The social, political, and economic pressures that have impacted the mission and practices of National Public Radio, McCourt asserts, are manifest in all areas of American life. Through extensive historical research, he examines whether American public broadcasters, as represented by NPR, have succeeded or failed to engender an enlightened, participatory democracy.

From the supplier: Radio broadcasting in St. Louis, MO, has been affected by the mergers and acquisitions between major broadcasting concerns. The Westinghouse/CBS-owned KMOX has a direct competitor's program with Jacor Communications' acquisition of EFM Media Management, since the former owns KMJM-FM and KATZ AM & FM. News Corp's purchase of Heritage Media Corp signals its entry into the local market, since Heritage has three radio stations in the area. However, News Corp has declared intention to sell the Heritage Radio properties in a leveraged buyout. The ARS-EZ Communications deal and Entercom's acquisition of KLOU-FM also have local impact.

                      Book Description

Move over Dr. Phil! In her remarkably funny new book, Relationship Strategist, Georgia Sullivan, guides women through a step-by-step plan to improve their relationships by comparing men to breeds of dogs. In the process, she helps men by giving them a way to defend themselves from the women in their lives who are trying so hard to change them.

To find out whether he's a Lab or a Lapdog, and whether she'd be better off with a Boxer or a Beagle, readers first take the PORCH DOGS Quiz, a personality test available in the book. According to their quiz results, Georgia Sullivan offers sage relationship advice to guide both men and women toward happiness and contentment. Written with tongue-in-cheek candor, Sullivan deftly lays out the traits for each man/dog type and follows up with sections dedicated to the head, heart, family and work qualities for each.

                      5 out of 5 stars Dog Daze.......2004-09-10

Porch Dogs is a great read, a very unusual and fun reference book and a DIY guide for assuming some control over a search for a satisfying relationship. Though the book may have been written with women in mind as a primary audience, don't discount the value to all readers regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. The underlying concept in the book, comparing men to dog breed characteristics, is designed to help the reader define and categorize some common male attributes. With the resulting improvement in understanding men, it is hoped that the reader will be able to better manage their relationship(s).

For the guys, the book can be very revealing, much like looking into a mirror. What I saw was right on the mark and funny as hell! Now I don't feel so bad about some of those allegedly annoying habits I've been told I have.

The Porch Dogs Quiz is very interesting and has sections for men and women. The resulting personality characterization is matched to one or more dog breeds.

Quite insightful and useful, the book is a terrific value and copies make excellent and unusual gifts for your friends and family members that need a little encouragement or guidance in their love lives.

                      Check it out!

                                Book Description

Written by television trainers who run their own courses on Multiskilling, this book offers a comprehensive introduction to the broad range of skills and technical knowledge required in this industry. It details all the essential information you need to know, acting as an on-the-job reference source for everyday use.

For many broadcasting technicians, one of the biggest challenges in recent years has been the transition from a career working in a solo core skill such as camerawork or audio, to acquiring the experience and expertise of a range of production jobs. Many people are expected to work in a number of crafts and to equip themselves with a much wider range of television techniques than had been customary in the past.

Multiskilling has become an integral part of television culture, requiring that new entrants are competent in several specialist production skills. Multiskilling for Television Production concentrates on the techniques associated with news and magazine programme production, where most tecnhical operators are usually employed, but most techniques are shared across the whole spectrum of television and film making.

Anyone baffled by the range and scope of skills to be mastered will find this book invaluable.
