Book Description
Here in a single volume is a practical, comprehensive training course for budding illustrators working to master comic book art, graphic novels, fantasy posters, sci-fi book covers and illustrations, and computer games. The author, a highly successful fantasy artist, teaches the basics of human anatomical drawing and musculature, as well as perspective and composition. He then instructs on ways to distort, develop, and transform the human figure, giving it features that range from monstrous or magical to super-agile or larger than life. Detailed artist's references and step-by-step instructions show how to build bodies that truly stretch the imaginationmighty alien warriors, kick-boxing cyber-punks, and mega-muscled superheroes, to name just a few. Art students also learn how to show their characters in many different dynamic action poses, such as flying, spinning, punching, and jumping, as well as how to express each character's emotions through facial expressions. More than 300 color illustrations.

Anatomy for Fantasy Artists: An Illustrator's Guide to Creating Action Figures and Fantastical Forms .......2007-07-24
This is a good book if you want to learn how to draw action figures that are real life people not creatures
Li'l anatomy.......2007-03-25
Thankfully, I was able to browse at this in my public library before buying it. The title doesn't reflect on the actual book. While the illustrations were clear and quiet a few were lovely the book failed to explain how the artists used anatomy and how they determined how to compose their figures. for an anatomy book, this falls horrible short. There about a handful (literally one handfull) of pages with live models. The images are of various sizes and almost on top of each other. More annoyingly for what few live model poses we are given the best are put inbetween two pages. You'll have an annoyign crease righti n the middle of the picture. It's not that hard to fill in the gaps, but certain details are lost from this type of placement.
Also when going into skeletal structures he might have used a real model skeleton instead of sketches. You don't get an adequate understanding of dimension with a pencil depiction alone. Also, most of the book is dedicated to the common characters of comics (e.g. the barabarian, the female robot, Muu the fatman, Brutus the hulk). All these characters really show are sketches at different angles with bullets with brief common sense info.
Plus the anatomy of most of the characters arenot really explored. It would have been nicer had they compared the exagerated features with realistic features.
Overall , despite some talented artists' contributions, this book fails in teaching anything abotu anatomy.
Art Essential.......2007-01-12
This is not only a great book but a wonderful guide on drawing great action figures. There are many tips and tricks I recommend in here and it not only looks at just one detain but many perspectives in drawing fantasy characters.
Good supplement.......2006-11-29
Get Drawing and painting Fantasy Figures and/or Fantasy Worlds first. This book is good if you can't get enough of source/guide/inspirational material.
Of Course, R. Crumb said "Wanna know how to draw better? Draw. Wishing won't make it happen!" and that's the first and best advice. Still, I have all these books I mentioned and do not regret my purchase!
Human Anatomy taken to the fantasy max.......2006-11-08
When I think of the subject of anatomy I think of the human shape. And this is what this book does. It takes a really good look at the human form both male and female and then it expands on this to the limits of fantasy art by also delving into distortions of the human form in the shape of goblins, ogres, wizards, cyborgs and dwarves. This is what I was looking for in a fantasy anatomy book. How to take the human shape and expand it in new expressive ways.
Strong points: Every single page has at least ten drawings - the book is absolutely stuffed with lots of illustrations and drawing
In particular there is a strong focus on communicating action in your drawing - this stays true to the action figures part of the title.
Large section of actual photographs of a male and female in various action poses; this a real handy reference.
Some nice complete drawings of the human skeleton and human musculature - these are good references.
Special Bonus: Glenn Fabry takes you through a 19 step process of doing an actual painting from first sketch to completed painting. This really helps in understanding the process of an artist.
Weak points: the beginning sections on practicing drawing, getting inspiration and understanding light are rather sparse but I consider these to just be review like in nature .
This is a really good book but it isn't aimed at teaching you how to draw. This book is aimed more at people who have some drawing ability already and want to learn about the ins and outs of anatomy in the fantasy genre. The title pretty much says that point: It is anatomy for fantasy artists

Fun.......2005-09-30
Kids really enjoy this book because they enjoy finger painting a lot. It's a chance to let them be messy and have fun and create pretty paintings. The ideas are easy yet good and entertaining.
Product Description
This book shows how to use finger paint to create spotty spiders, cats, rainbow fish, a folding pattern, a rocket, lots of flowers, an owl in a tree, a field of rabbits, lots of shapes, snails in a puddle, an iceberg picture, an angel, an alligator, spiky animals, a jungle picture, and funny creatures.
Book Description
When Ruby decides to do a painting of a big tree, her friends all want to be in the picture. "Paint me! Paint me!" each of them says. So Ruby does, but each friend thinks Ruby has neglected to show his or her best feature. "You forgot to paint my red tail," says Fiona Fox. "You forgot to paint my wide wings," says Carlos Crow. Yet once the painting is finished, Ruby's friends find that she just may have portrayed the best part of them after all.
Expressive paintings perfectly capture the best part of this new story about Ruby, the irrepressible raccoon, first introduced in ruby bakes a cake and as full of childlike good humor as ever.

Absolutely Terrific!.......2007-05-06
Okay people, I'm old. I'm fifty-eight and have read virtually every self-help book ever written. My daughter is a psychologist, and what I haven't read or tried, she has.
I bought this book on a whim. I was having a completely awful day (well, month), and wanted something (anything) that might give me new information. (Yeah, like that's going to happen at this point in my life!)
This book is wonderful. It's a quick read, and presented in two and three page bits. The suggestions are great. I've tried several so far, and they really work.
But my favorite part of the book is the last section, "Stop The Madness." It sums up all the psychology, philosophy, and "new age" information I've been reading for decades. And it's presented with a sense of humor.
I just love Lois Levy. Aside from her brief bio at the back of the book, I know nothing about her, but I love her!
If you want absolutely sound, sane advice presented in the friendliest way possible, buy this book. You'll be glad you did!

Don't pass this one up!.......2007-07-28
If you are looking to brush up on your theory, expand your musical vocabulary, or just get some great ideas, this is the book for you. Steve obviously not only knows his stuff but also knows how to communicate his "wisdom" effectively and efficiently.
Bravo!
Kudos to the Goom (Steve Goomas author of Keyboard Wisdom).......2004-10-23
Steve has given us an exciting window on contemporary piano and keyboard playing. Concise and easy to read materials are presented directly so you can get your hands on a wide vocabulary of cool sounds right away enabling both
beginners and more advanced to excel and make that vocabulary their very own.
I know Steve to be a great player with a razor sharp mind and he has put his insights into this beautiful book that aims to lift hearts and minds into the worlds
of Jazz/ pop/ rock/latin and country. I have chosen to use "Keybaord Wisdom"
in my own classes at the university level. I highly recommend Steve's tome of wisdom. It's what you need to begin your practice for real.

A Modern Guide to Piano.......2004-07-14
Easy to read, easy to understand, easy to put into practice. That's what Steve Goomas has accomplished in his new guide to theory and technique. Never again will you have to muddle through pedantic exercises or mind-numbing exposition. The book is broken down into two to three page sections by chord types and scales, i.e., major/minor, sevenths, 6/9, thirteenths, modes, augmented and so on. Frequently used scales are clearly set forth with short and easy examples as to how to apply them over a few chords progression-enough to where you get the gist of things and want to head right to the keyboard to try them out. In all the right places, Goomas interjects short, practical tips on how to improvise. You'll learn all the ways to voice a chord and then substitute other chords for it and then improvise over everything. Go out and buy this book and see for yourself.
A must for keyboardists!.......2004-04-22
This book by Steve Goomas is presented in a straight-ahead, logical, concise manner. I like books that are fun as well as educational and Steve's book really hits the mark for me with this effort. I also really liked the addition of the CD examples. His comments on pg. 10 "...Do in all 12 keys with both hands'" can't be emphasized enough! I'm glad that he hits the reader with that on the 2nd page of exercises. If you are an intermediate player with a need to expand your horizons - this is the book for you!
Keyboard Wisdom.......2004-03-14
Goomas' manual is an excellent source that is easy to read, with practical insights to improvisation and solid keyboard theory. I highly recommend it.

Rajneesh was a spiritual leader for thousands of young Americans. He attracted such a following at his ashram in Pune, India and in the United States that he and his devotees were able to take over an entire town in rural Oregon and establish a thriving community there. Sociologist Marion Goldman's extensive interviews with women who participated in Rajneeshpuram, whether on or off the compound, provide a fascinating picture of the cultural and social climate that motivated successful, established women to participate in such a movement.\par\pard\s1\sa100\sb100\li0\plain\fs24 While talking with and studying the women of Rajneeshpuram, Goldman comes to realize that their responses, while extreme, can shed light on our understanding of how women in general experience love, work, and spirituality. While the women who followed Rajneesh are intriguing in themselves, Goldman contends that they also mirror the ways in which women with fragile senses of self often seek confirmation in achievement or in intense relationships. Readers will learn that the origin of these women's attraction to cults or new religions may not be much of a deviation from their own behavior or that of their friends and many American women: the relentless search for confirmation in the eyes of others.\par\pard\s1\sa100\sb100\li0\plain\fs24 In their quests for spiritual meanings the women embodied the great shifts which took place in America's religious marketplace during the 1970s and 1980s. Their searches for significance, value, and positive senses of self reflected their early family experiences and their fragile identities, as well as their social locations. More than ten years later, the Osho/Rajneesh movement continues, and almost all of the women have cemented their identities through the movement or others that resemble it.\par\pard\s1\sa100\sb100\li0\plain\fs24\i1 Passionate Journeys\plain\fs24 is written in an engaging, lively style that makes it an unusually engrossing ethnography for a wide range of readers. It is also meticulously researched, theoretically complex, and carefully argued and will appeal to specialists in feminist theory and women's studies, sociology, religious studies, American studies, and the history of the Northwest.\par\pard\s1\sa100\sb100\li0\plain\fs24{\field{\*\fldinst HYPERLINK "http://www-vms.uoregon.edu/\u126 ~mgoldman/index.html"}{\fldrslt\pard\s1\sa100\sb100\li0\plain\fs24\cs16\cf1\ul Marion S. Customer Reviews:
An interesting examination of the seductiveness of cults.......2002-04-02
Interesting, a great read for anyone interested in feminist psychology and/or how women are attracted to cults. I respect the author's careful discussion of her methods and her openess. Highly recommended.
Tells why cults attract women PRIMARILY from wealthy classes.......2001-03-24
A fascinating look at one of the least studied phenomenoms about religious movements and cults - why do they often draw women from privileged backgrounds. Is it guilt? Is there something about the priveliged lifestyle that makes these women crave something spiritual? Goldman shows that the answers aren't the ones that automatically come to mind, affected by early family experiences, vulnerability and a lack of solid identity - and even such subtle factors as where they live. I read this one in a single day, as I found it that compelling and helped me to understand why people I knew had joined cults.
Surprising discovery.......2000-01-18
Marion Goldman's Passionate Journeys is a great surprise! A friend gave it to me raving and I started reading it as a favor. It is a knockout! It captures an era and a phenomenon that has been a mystery to many of us and described a dynamic that could happen to many women tomorrow. It's a totally involving read and left me wondering if I was susceptible to joining a cult, even one which took a dramatic and bizarre and utterly fascinating turn as did the Rajneeshi cult. Don't miss this one.
