Beautiful Images.......2007-01-10
I personally felt the best thing about this text book was its beautiful images--the pieces of art are from all over the world, with varied mediums, differing meanings, and from differing time periods. The book is detailed and lengthy--it is not only ideal for those who thrive in artistry, but also for those who are studying the given topic.
Culture on a Shelf.......2006-08-08
This is the sort of book that a student buys for a Humanities class and keeps the rest of their life. Children growing up with this in the home will immediately identify the worlds greatest art and buildings having already seen it here in this book. This book represents an investment in a cultured home and is one the whole family will appreciate for a lifetime. The pictures are beautiful. The organization is state of the art.

A Shot in the Dark.......2002-03-13
"My work is not representative of dreams but comes from the same place as dreams" -- This is perhaps the best explanation of the work of photographer Diana Thorneycroft.
Using a range of sometimes disturbing props and masks, and naked or semi-naked models, including herself, Thorneycroft creates images in the dark using a flashlight and long exposures. Bypassing the visual, rational world, the often nightmarish images created explore issues of sexuality and vulnerability on a subconscious level. As she puts it, "The body speaks a language the mind doesn't."
Intriguing, but not everybody's cup of tea, which probably explains why this book is so expensive.
Shocking & Beautiful.......2000-05-12
This beautifully produced hard cover volume of Winnipeg artist Diana Thorneycroft's self portraits is not for the faint at heart. By playing with light, mask, found items- (broken dolls, hospital equipment), Diana distorts the human form- (her own), and challenges the viewer to re-evaluate sexual and familial stereotypes.

Pages falling out.......2006-03-18
The book is fantasic - the copy I was sent looked fine when I wrapped it for my nine year old's birthday. However, when he opened it, the first part fell out page by page. He was disappointed. I was angry.
REWIND THE CLOCK TO 1998.......2005-02-11
While the title gives the impression that this Peanuts collection focuses soley on Snoopy, this is not the case. The book actually reprints all the Peanuts strips from the calendar year 1998 in chronological order, complete with the dates in the daily strips. This really is the best way to enjoy any comic strip because Shulz of course did have storylines that would run over the course of many days, if not a few weeks. The daily strips are actually in color as well as the Sundays although sometimes the colors seemed to have been rushed or off a bit from panel to panel.
We see the usual Schulz plot elements here, Baseball games, preparing for the Great Pumpkin, Lucy flirting with Schroeder, Snoopy's writing career, etc...Rerun plays a fairly big part in this collection as he's developed and fleshed out quite a bit than he had been since his arrival and was Schulz's last major addition to the cast, even though he was not the most popular amongst Peanut's fans.
There are a lot of hits, and a few misses; some rely on specific reactions to the outside world which I do not share. But then, some of the ones that other people would find to be non-sequitors, I find brilliant, because I can see what's going on in the character's head.
All in all, quite an enjoyable book.
Surprisingly good cartoons!.......2004-02-11
If you're like me, who ignored Peanuts in the 90s because you thought it was past its prime will be pleased by the great humor and artwork of these cartoons. Despite the title these 1998 strips don't solely focus on Snoopy. I agree with the sentiment that the (daily) strips shouldn't be colored in. Well worth buying if you're a Peanuts fan or collector.
This is a great book!.......2003-06-04
This wonderful book contains 168 pages of Peanuts cartoons, and all of them are in color! All of these 1998 cartoons are reproduced in wonderful quality, and are a joy to read. Snoopy's brothers (Spike, Olaf and Andy) are here, including Spike spending time in the trenches of World War I! Also, in this book, we get to learn where the zambonis go at night, see Snoopy at Valley Forge, and see Woodstock become a test pilot.
This is a great book! My daughter had some money saved up, and when she saw this book, she just had to get it. After that, she spent hours poring over it, and reading the stories aloud. She loves this book, and considers her money well spent. We both highly recommend this book.
I Like the Color!.......2001-09-17
Hey, I like the color! I wish the rest of the critics of this particular format would be quiet! No, it may not have been in color when you saw it in the newspaper, but don't you think Charles Schulz would have liked to have added color to it? I think it looks great! Let's see more from Ballantine books!

Tanita BC533 Glass Innerscan Body Composition Monitor
ASIN: 0380800152 |
Book Description
"Guitarist Dennis Coffey was in that elite band of musicians who helped to create the Motown Sound."
-Edwin Starr
"There can never be enough stories told from the vantage point of Motown's fabled Snake Pit, from one of the journeyman musicians working behind the scenes. Guitars, Bars, and Motown Superstars also shows just how frenetic and creative the Detroit music scene was in the '60s and '70s. But it's Dennis Coffey's personal story that's most gripping: the journey from Motown, to Billboard's Top Ten, to working the line at Chevrolet."
-Susan Whitall, Detroit News; author of Women of Motown
Under Berry Gordy, Motown was a place where studio musicians usually stood in the shadows, unlike the solo stars whose names appeared on the albums. Gordy held a tight rein on his musicians, forbidding them from playing for other record companies and denying them credit on his records.
In Guitars, Bars, and Motown Superstars, author and guitarist Dennis Coffey tells how he slipped Gordy's draconian rules and went on to success as both a Motown musician and a million-selling solo artist. He offers a fascinating backstage look at the Detroit, L.A., and New York music scenes in the '60s and '70s, with side trips to the smoky clubs and funky studios where the Motown sound was born.
Coffey is credited with creating a lot of that sound, including the famous guitar intro to the Temptations' classic "Cloud Nine." He played on hundreds of Motown albums, and introduced such innovations as the Wah Wah pedal into the Motown recording studio.
Guitars, Bars, and Motown Superstars is an entertaining and amusing memoir of one of the most dynamic and influential periods in contemporary pop culture, and a unique insight into the ups and downs of the studio guitar-for-hire. It's also a look at the dizzying rags-to-riches-and-back-again career of a rock musician who went from million-seller with a house in the Hollywood Hills, and ultimately back to his roots in the Detroit area. A must for fans of Motown, rock, and you-are-there pop-culture history.
Customer Reviews:
Guitars, Bars and Motown Superstarts.......2005-06-14
We need more memoirs like this. It takes you back through rock and soul glory years, from the perspective of one of the hundreds of musicians who weren't really "superstars" but were stars simply trying to make a living and make great music. Coffey's rise as a rock and Motown guitarist, his forced move along with all the Motown gang to LA by Barry Gordy, and his subsequent fall from the upper echelon of the American music scene to working on a Chevrolet assembly line reads like a great rags to riches to rags novel. A nice plus is the complete discography and a section where he tells us what guitar he used on different songs.
A different perspective than most.......2004-09-09
Under Berry Gordy Motown became a place where studio musicians usually stood in the shadows of solo stars promoted in his studios, for Gordy held stringent contracts which prevented his musicians from playing for other record companies and often denied them credit on his records. In Guitars, Bars, And Motown Superstars, guitarist Dennis Coffey tells how he escaped Gordy's tight hold on music to become a success as both a Motown musician and solo artist - and his backstage look at the Motown experience provides quite a different perspective than most. This is no fly-by-night artist: Coffey was one of Detroit's most important session guitarists in the 1960s and 80s and played for many superstars: his insights are a 'must' for any enthusiast of the Motown scene.
A superbly written and hilarious account of a funk legend.......2004-04-01
This is one book you just can't put down. It grabs you and takes you on a funk-filled roller coaster ride through LA, NY, Detroit, and all points in between!
Dennis Coffey comes to life and brings you along for the ride of a lifetime. Exploring Detroit in the 60's and 70's, he talks about the rise of Motown Records, his gigs, shows, and tells the stories that only an insider like him can tell. With wit and charm, he often makes you laugh out loud, and you catch yourself imagining just what it was like to be making history. This is the kind of biography and story telling that we need more of. The session players like Dennis have all sorts of great stories because the people they are, and the people they worked with, are so far above extraordinary that it makes for great reading.
Pick this book up, but be warned, you won't put it down anytime soon.

A wonderful storyteller.......1998-07-12
I just heard Miss Brown give a reading from this volume, and I must say it was a very well-told story. I heard her described as the "First Lady of Alabama Letters" and I think we're doing well if that is the case.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty obvious stuff.......2002-10-27
This book appears to be a hastily thrown together batch of expressions, very few of which strike me as regional. For example, do we need Mr. Bonds to tell us that "flustered" means frustrated, "fly off the handle" means to become angry, or to "follow" something is to understand it? Of the nine or ten entries on each page, no more than three of them are particularly southern, and even those are pretty durn obvious.
I bought this book when I was researching southern expressions, and found it less colorful than web pages available for free on the internet....
Kiss ma grits!.......2002-04-14
Southern Tongue is the perfect coffee table book for any true Southerner. I have recently moved away from the South, and miss it almost every day. This book brings a smile to my face every time I pick it up. It's not quite a dictionary in the literal sense, but it's definately a compilation of delightful and nostalgic "Southernisms." Just about every page has expressions I still use to this day and now can show my friends, "see I'm not the only one that talks this way!"
I can almost feel the warm breezes of home, and smell the bbq my Daddy prides himself on. Not to mention Mamma's chicken fried steak! MMM-MMM what a memory!
Thanks to Mr. Bonds for giving us this merry and light hearted view on the way we Southerners speak in such a delightful "down home" way. I enjoyed the heck out of it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a clue into the "Southern Tongue."
Southern as grits and gators.......2002-04-10
I would like to rebut a previous review of "Southern Tongue". I'm a born and bred Southern boy who's been away from home for quite some time. Buying this book was like getting a care package from Mom. It sparked a flood of memories and (like the publisher said) left me homesick, but happy. It reminded me of the crawfish boils we used to have in the summer and of how Daddy always had to have his grits on Saturday morning. It reminded me of things my Granny used to say when I was young. Things I had forgotten. The reviewer that I'm rebutting stated that there wasn't a hint of insight in this book as to anything Southern. I disagree and I AM a bonified Southerner (not a Californian like this other self-proclaimed expert.) In fact, I can't for the life of me, think of anything in my own Southern vocabulary that isn't in this book. Granted, many of the expressions in this book are in used elsewhere, but this was stated in the fore matter of the book (had you read it). I live in Alaska now, but I still use my "Southern Tongue" everyday, so of course the expressions exist outside the South. Also, in defense of "Southern Tongue", this is obviously a nostalgic, novelty, gift, "hit-home" with a Southerner type of book. Hell, I bought 5 to give to my kinfolk back home next Christmas. It's a little piece of the South that I am proud to have on my coffee table. If you want "etymology and regional analysis" you should probably go get a college education. This book, however, is as fun and light-hearted as the South and Southern people are, and if you don't get it then California is probably a good place for you to be. Like Lynyrd Skynyrd sang, "A Southern man don't need [you] around anyhow."
And to the author...thanks! I've been reading a few expressions each night, and always catch myself smiling. Now when my Alaskan friends wonder what I'm talking about, I show them your book, and they usually get a kick out of it too. Thanks again.
An Over-rated Book.......2002-04-06
There's a lot to disappoint in Southern Tongue: A Dictionary of Southern Expressions. First, the subtitle is misleading: these aren't so much southern expressions as they are expressions of informal American speech--countrified perhaps, but by no means regionally specific. One can go page after page without a hint of insight into things specifically southern. Here's the sum total of entries for page 73: good Lord!, goodness gracious, good ol' boy, good people, go off half cocked, gopher (errand boy), goshdawgit, goshdernit. Yep, that's it for the page, although each has a one-line definition and a single (or so) sentence example. This book definitely calls to mind that old saw: The food's not any good, and there's not enough of it.
The publisher doesn't make such a grand claim for the book. The Midwest Book Review on Amazon, however, really distorts the intention and the value of this book. "Each entry is authoritaively defined" is a line from the review that they felt strongly enough to use as the subject of the review. I see no reference to any authority in any of the definitions, and there's no attempt at any etymology or regional analysis. The 8 words I cited from page 73 are defined in about 50 words total--hardly a scholarly effort. Midwest Book Review says the book is "highly recommended for students of linguistics, tourists, academicians including historians and cultural anthropologists . . . as well as novelists and travelers seeking authenticity in their historical or regional diaglogues." They even claim the book offers "an in-depth examination" of the subject, despite the surface treatment. Again, I'm not quarreling with the book publisher, who makes no claims to high scholarship. (I don't care for the book, but I'm sure others might.)
I've never written in to criticize a review before and I don't expect to again. This is such an inaccurate review, however, that I don't think it should go unremarked. Why did Midwest take this approach?
Each entry is authoritatively defined.......2002-02-08
Southern Tongue: A Dictionary Of Southern Expressions is a compilation of more than 1300 words and expressions commonly used throughout the Southern United States. Each entry is authoritatively defined, including usage examples for clarity and context. The entries are presented alphabetically in a dictionary style format, complete with headers and cross-references. Highly recommended for students of linguistics, tourists, academicians including historians and cultural anthropologists, tourists and travelers through the southern states, as well as novelists and biographers seeking authenticity in their historical or regional dialogues, Southern Tongue offers an in-depth examination at the unique ways in which Southerners choose to express themselves.

Book Description
Important themes in the content and practice of industrial and labor market policy are addressed in this book. Topics addressed include: the problems facing the manufacturing sector; skills, education and training; human resource management strategies; minimum wages and the impact of privatization and deregulation. Each of these discussions will be backed up with the findings of original research carried out by the authors. Of great interest to students and academics involved with labor economics, industrial economics and industrial relations, this comprehensive new study will also prove useful reading for those involved with policy making.
Book Description
The fourth volume in the FIEF Studies in Labour Markets and Economic Policy explores how trade unions formulate their policy and the effect of bargaining structures on economic performance. The first of the two papers presented in this volume uses collective choice analysis to examine the
process of policy formation within unions. It argues that the political processes of unions are arranged to produce uniform preferences, thereby reducing the number of issues that are submitted to votes by union members. The second paper considers the centralization of bargaining procedures and the
consequences of centralized bargaining on economic performance. A new model is presented that investigates the impact of different levels of union centralization on the trade off between wages and employment.
