ArtSpeak - A worthwhile guide.......2005-09-22
I am a docent and at times a docent trainer, and this guide came in very handy when I was preparing for an exhibition on contemporary artists. It is well-written, to the point, and has extensive coverage for a little book!
A Great Resource.......2004-04-07
I'm a BFA student at Virginia Tech heading to grad school and this is an excellent book to teach from, have as a reference, or just thumb through for fun. Simple and succinct while still thorough. It's really an invaluable thing to have for ready info at your fingertips. This book has been part of the curriculum here for Performance Art, Found Object Sculpture, and Installation classes, and everyone in the class universally approves and finds it helpful.
Great book for art history classes.......2000-12-28
Perfect for writing critiques and analyses from all art movements. Great glossary of terms for a beginning art student looking up hard-to-understand words in text books.
Great for art history students!.......2000-12-27
A glossary of art terms. This book is a definite must for those writing analyses of art. It's also good for looking up those tricky terms in your text books. It is filled with artsy terms and illustrations. I used it in all my art history classes.

This book is my kids' favorite! Everything is either very LARGE and exciting, or SILLY and exciting, or ADVENTUROUS and exciting, or extremely INTERESTING and exciting. Don't buy this if you want your child to sit in a corner with crayons for the rest of her/his life and never look beyond the expected. This is for the kids that will challenge their imaginations and explore art from a new view, building who they will be as adults.

Success with all ages!.......2000-06-13
I used the stained glass project from the book with a group of 21 children, ranging in age from 4 to 12. The instructions were super-easy to explain to my group, and it was a real pleasure to see all the kids working so independently! At the end of the hour, each child had a great looking project and a sense of accomplishment! Ms. Kohl has another winner!

Product Description
This book of extraordinary photographs of the 'other side' of Egypt is the result of the more than three years that Italian photojournalist Silvia Dogliani has spent in the country, traveling, meeting people, and looking out for the unexpected. Through her pictures, she presents a remarkable -- and different -- portrait of Egypt, avoiding the well-known history and the popular views, focusing instead on life as it is lived by its people. Three main oppositions are the focus of this book: Noise -- the infinite variety of sounds that are life's constant background -- and Silence -- secretly hidden and always desired; Spirit -- a fascinating labyrinth of beliefs -- and Movement -- the action of lively faces and places; Past -- the magnificent memories touched by nostalgia -- and Future -- the fervent wish for improvement. Complementing the 150 color pictures are informal interviews, conducted by the photojournalist and her co-writer Theresa Everline, with Egyptians! and non-Egyptians from all walks of life -- both the famous and the not so famous -- whose words give a further feeling of the real Egypt, an insight beyond the pyramids, temples, and tombs.

Quite good.......2007-09-13
I bought this book because I wanted to look at some pictures of Cairo. What I found when I opened it was better that what I expected. I liked the photos and I did not got bored reading the texts, which are mostly in the form of interviews of famous Egyptian people (like the Governor of Alexandria and Naguib Mahfouz, the writer). The texts offer a glimpse at Egyptian life and the photos are nice. I recommend it.

Very Disappointing.......2004-05-30
After I read this book, I just felt very sorry for these two women who seem to never have had a decent experience with any man to bash them the way they do. It's not funny, it's depressing.
Did I read the same book?.......2000-10-03
After reading the above reviews I was highly disappointed. This book was nothing but cliches and expressions we've all heard dozens of time. It only took me fifteen minutes to read the whole thing. Very, very disappointing.
Barb Ewing A good person........2000-08-30
Even though i have not yet read this book I would like to say something in responce to a review that someone has made. Barb Ewing who is an author of this book is a seventh grade teacher and she happens to be one of the best teachers in the world. Her as a teacher and her as an author are 2 differnt people. Barb Ewing would never say anything bad to any of her students, nor would she bring anything up about her realationships in her classroom. You people have no right to say anything bad about her because you dont know her and if you did you would have nothing bad to say about her.
Funny - Even from a male perspective!.......2000-07-25
My wife brought this book home the other day and I just had to read a few pages. It had me chuckling for a good hour. I even had to do a gut check on a few of the pages and ask myself if they were describing me. An entertaining and funny book. By the way, I read some of the reviews. What's up in Canton OH. Sounds like a bunch of people got together to bash the authors. Lose the attitude! Your reviews have nothing to do with the book and everything to do with your dislike of somebody. Grow up and get a funny bone!
If I could have selected no stars, I would have........2000-07-17
Hi I'm a 15 year old from Hudson, OH. My mom purchased this book as a recommendation from one of her friends. One day I picked it up and started reading it, I was appalled! I have never in my life read anything so juvenile. What a waste of trees. It didn't even take me 2 minutes to finish, I didn't crack a smile once. These two money hungry women must have bashed their ex-husbands past the point of common sense. It makes me want to write my own book, as a matter of fact, I might just recycle this disgrace to paper and write my own.

A useful guide for those unfamiliar with world music.......2002-09-10
This small book is a brief introduction to 100 world music cds. The music covers a very wide range, though there is nothing from East Asia. Each entry is about two (small) pages long: it introduces the artist, and something about the artist's place in his or her culture's music. The writer chooses the musician's most accessible cd, in most cases. This means that some of the recommended cds are too westernized, in my opinion, but the articles do inform you (or warn you) about whether the music is authentic folk music, fusion, virtually indistinguishable from western pop, or whatever.
I am very interested in music, but I didn't know much about music other than western classical music and rock. Unfortunately, for about the last two years I had been becoming increasingly bored with the ordinary music I listened to, and I wanted to try something different. I picked up this book, and I found that it helped me a lot. It is a manageable guide to world music, suitable for people who don't yet know anything about it.
Another reviewer complained that this book was too shallow. I think he was missing the point of the book. Those wanting in-depth coverage of world music can go to other books. This book is a guide for beginners, and is actually small enough to carry with you to the music store. Now I don't need this book: for the past two years I have been using it to help me explore the music of other cultures, and so now my knowledge is deeper. However, for the beginner, I think this is a wonderful book: it is helpful, it points out many artists that are well worth knowing about, and the information in the articles is precise enough to help you decide if a particular cd would appeal to you or not. I've started reading other guides to non-western music, in particular the Rough Guide to World Music, volumes one and two (which, by the way, is 1,435 pages long), and of course these other guides include more musicians and are more definitive, but the purpose of this small book is to help you get started by introducing you to a few of the most popular world music cds. I think it serves its purpose admirably.
Terribly shallow.......2001-10-12
Afro Celt Sound system the number 1 "world music" release? King Sunny Ade's "Ju-Ju" music barely makes the list. Oriental music is completely neglected along with the Scandinavian roots movement. Franco and O.K. Jazz didn't make it? This guide is a joke.
Absolutely brilliant, totally essential, the one and only.......1999-04-06
Simply the best guide to World Music by a billion miles, absolutely essential for anyone with a serious interest in non-Anglo popular and traditional music, ten stars for this book - there are no substitutes and no rivals whatsoever!

Great things come in small packages.......2003-10-24
Having a somewhat extensive Latin music collection that includes,45's, 78's, lp's(yes, I can and do still play them), some tapes, both cassette and reel to reel and into the modern digital era formats, I was more than curious to see what was considered "essential." The author, Sue Steward, who also wrote "Salsa, Musical Heartbeat of America," gives a bit of a disclaimer in the acknowledgement by stating the difficulty in selecting 100 essential discs among the thousnds of choices covering so many decades and so many countries aand varied genres. The result is a book that draws heavily on salsa( remember the title of her book) but the contributing specialists reviews of other styles of Latin music gives the book a pretty good balance. The terrific thing is the convenience of this handy mini- pocket book that can fit into the pocket of a mans shirt pocket! You can take this book anywhere and read it anytime to get information on your "unknown discovery" or to read about one of your favorite discs. Each disc is very professionally and competently reviewed. Each review is about two pages and besides the actual music information there are complete biographical backgrounds on the artists, the development of the musical style, including influences and assorted interesting side notes. Since the book is limited to 100 cd's at the end of the review there are a few suggestions for further exploration of either the artist or similar artists within the genre. There is lots to discover in this mini-book. This is a good book for the person looking for some of the best Latin muisc ever, whether the shopping is virtual or real this book will inform and help you make a better decision on your next selection. I have enjoyed reading this book and keep it handy when it comes time to add a new disc to the collection. Curiously I did find a few personal "gems" missing but why complain if what you get in return is learning about what you haven't heard. The musical years covered spans many decades and the styles range from bossa nova to cumbias, salsa to boleros, rocnEspanol to merengue, Latin jazz to Cuban, Tango to folkloric and just about everything else considered Latin. This is a great little book for a great little price. The price is absolutely right and you'll have change from that new colorful twenty to buy your new "discovery" cd in Latin music. There is a small section on websites suggested to buy the discs, which includes Amazon with as Sue Steward says, "seemingly bottomless well of stock."

Book Description
Do human beings become creatures of the technology they create? Is gender an artifact of the work performed by such manufactured things? Drawing on a broad variety of literary and philosophical sources, including Homer's "Iliad", Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", accounts of the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, and recent scholarship in feminist, postmodern, and political theory, this impressive book offers strikingly original ways for readers to think about technology, gender identity, culture, the environment, politics, and the ways women and men struggle to make sense of the gifts of Prometheus. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of political theory, environmental thought, and gender, cultural, and literary studies.
Customer Reviews:
You have to be joking........2004-04-08
The author is an absolute genuis. Only a genuis could use this level of vocabulary to generate such pure organic bovine fertilizer. (On second thought, fertilizer is useful.)
His first chapter starts with the fallacy known as 'begging the question'. The footnote repeats the error.
Later he ponders whether it would be hard to distinguish between a live breathing daughter and a barbie. [Earth to Osborne: most children get that before they can talk.] He then continues this with (paraphrase) '... and would it be more of a problem if ...' type logic. [No, it wasn't a problem the first time and it isn't a problem now.]
His follow on paragraph tries to step back and say the issue isn't whether they are "really" different.
Sorry Timothy. Most of us have to live in what we call the 'real' world where being able to tell the difference between a daughter and a doll is a requirement. Only tenured professors can get away with believing reality is socially constructed.
This emperor has no clothes.
1 star because there are no zeros.
An Amazing Intellectual Journey.......2002-12-01
TKO is a brilliant and visionary philosopher. In this book he challenges the reader to suspend the Cartesian assumption of subject/object dualism inherent to our Western perspective of relationship of self to other. In so doing, the reader is treated to a journey spanning cultures, politics, philosophy, art, manufacturing, and gender - all through the perspective of a uniquely crafted lens! Weaving complex ideas with real world issues, TKO offers a new way to view ourselves, others, and the world we have created. After reading this book, you will never look at a hammer or a vacuum quite the same again.
INCREDIBLE!.......2002-11-13
This is a fantastic book. Timothy Kaufman-Osborn is a great author with amazing talent. Creatures of Prometheus is a brilliant analysis of the relationship between technology and gender. I would highly recommend purchasing this book.
