5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2000-08-07

Mary Ann Staniszewski's "Believing is Seeing" is a GREAT book. It is articulately written with many reproductions and is used in many university and college level art courses across the country!! Navigating the unnecessarily murky waters of modern and contemporary art, this book is refreshing in its insightful directness about art, culture and value.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting Counterpoint to Traditional Art History.......2000-08-01

Mary Anne Staniszewski's "Believing is Seeing" is a clearly written, carefully illustrated, thought provoking overview of the meaning of "Art". Distilled from introductory lectures on contemporary art, culture and critical theory delivered at the Rhode Island School of Design more than a decade ago, "Believing is Seeing" provides a useful counterpoint to mainstream art history texts by challenging traditional, transhistorical views of aesthetic value.

Appropriately subtitled "Creating the Culture of Art", Staniszewski's book demonstrates that Art is something "that has a specific history and belongs to a particular era." What our culture generally calls "Art" is an invention of the past two hundred years. Thus, modern culture has appropriated the paintings, frescoes, sculptures, and artifacts of earlier times and cultures (where they had historically specific meanings) and labelled them "Art". Modern culture applies this label even though the original creators of these representations and objects would not have regarded their creations as Art in the way we commonly use the term.

The task of defining and identifying Art in contemporary Western society is largely a function of the institutional structures--the museums, galleries, auction houses, and publications--that create the culture of Art. In this way, Marcel Duchamp can mount a urinal on a pedestal and this plumbing fixture becomes "Art", acquires meaning and value, through validation by these institutional arbiters of the Art world. Rejecting essentialism, Staniszewski argues that aesthetic value and meaning are socially constructed, the products of a particular historical moment and culture. As individuals, we may not consider Duchamp's urinal anything more than that--a urinal--but that does not obviate the fact that cultural institutions have conferred (rightly or wrongly) some greater meaning (and value) on the object.

"Believing is Seeing" is not an important book; it is a book which, like its thesis, is the product of a particular historical moment and culture. It is, however, full of provocative and challenging ideas about how culture creates meaning and value. And for this reason alone, it is worth careful reading.

3 out of 5 stars Questions on the logic of the book........2000-04-04

In this book Mary Staniszewski tries a nearly impossible task of defining art. Her twist on the subject is a fresh look at art in the modern movements, but she also splits the art world into two time periods. The early works by those who are termed the old masters (e.g. Michealangelo, DaVinci, Bernini and other pre-1800's artists) do not fit into the definition of modern art that she presents in the book. If she were to have answered the questions in a little more logical fasion I may have been able to follow the first chapter better. But as it stands I don't see how simply useing the date of the modern definition of art can prevent or select an artists work for either being art or not being art. Some other great questions would be: What are Mary Anne Staniszewski's credentials? Has she ever made art herself? Is she an Art Historian? As for the descriptive portion of the book, it is wonderful and well worth reading. I would recommend getting this book just for its documentation of historical events and how they effected modern art movements.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing take on Art.......2000-03-02

First of all, I find that most of the reviews of this book are one star because the readers didnt agree with Staniszewski's ideas, however they ignored how well written this book is. She takes the way we typically view "art" and shows us how fraudulent it is. In doing so she challenges not only are view of art, but also our view of the world around us. Even if you dont like her ideas its no reason not to acknowledge the intelligence with which she has written this book.

1 out of 5 stars what????.......1999-07-21

The author has written a senseless book trying too hard to simplify art and it's interpretation. I was expecting something elightening and informative, something that would help guide me when going to museums. She tries to succumb the "sucker" into defining what is and isn't art in HER terms.

The book is cluterred with unsubstantive one- liner, opinions about 2-d, photocopied artwork (that horde precious space in the book and will never do justice to the actual artwork).

I learned nothing except that I will think twice before buying something from Penguin Publishers. How could this laughable picture book slip through the pressing machines at a major publishing company, I will never know.

              Book Description

John Feeney arrived in Egypt in 1963 to make a documentary film, intending to stay for one year and stayed for forty. Photographing Egypt originates from a major retrospective exhibition of his work, which took place in March 2005 at the American University in Cairo’s Sony Gallery. It is a collection of his rare color photographs of Egypt, taken over the past forty years depicting the epic grandeur of Egypt. Photographs in the book include historic pictures of Gamal Abd al-Nasser’s funeral cortege leaving Qasr al-Nil Bridge and of the last Nile flood to come to Egypt, as well as aspects of the country rarely seen—the unique domes of Cairo, the extraordinary multicolored pavilions of the Tentmakers’ Street, the gathering of jasmine blossoms in the Nile Delta, the search for the elusive desert truffle, the shadow puppet plays of Cairo’s street theater, and the hammams of the medieval city.

The photographs are accompanied by extracts from the photographer’s narration to his Nile film Fountains of the Sun, and from his essays that have appeared over the years in Aramco World Magazine.

4 out of 5 stars Wit for the New Dog Owner.......2005-01-12

Mr. Lovka has assembled funny, witty, and astute comparisons of dogs and cats. If you're just starting to work with a dog, and are going through obedience issues that come along with the package, this book is just right for when you need to step back a little. Dogs are vey loving and loyal, but of course they have needs, too.

As the author says: dogs are in it for the fun, cats are in it for the money.

              That about sums it up.

              Enjoy,

              Gus

While baseball's pastoral pace never lets us forget its past, football's martial-like essence seems forever fixed in the present. Yet, borne on the broad backs of men like Pudge Heffelfinger, Jim Thorpe, George Halas, Red Grange, Sammy Baugh, and Bronco Nagurski, football's history is filled with a legend, color, and personality as intriguing and all-American as that usually ascribed to baseball. Like a good offensive guard, Pigskin does yeoman-like work in the trenches, opening the right holes for football's barnstorming, step-child past to rush through. Thoroughly researched and authoritatively written, it helps resuscitate a sporting era--from the late 19th century to the dawn of saturation TV--when the passion for playing the game was far more alluring than all those soulless numbers on the business end of the dollar sign.

                            Book Description

If the National Football League is now a mammoth billion-dollar enterprise, it was certainly born into more humble circumstances. Indeed, it began in 1920 in an automobile showroom in Canton, Ohio, when a car dealer called together some owners of teams, mostly in the Midwest, to form a league. Unlike the lavish boardrooms in which NFL owners meet today, on this occasion the owners sat on the running boards of cars in the showroom and drank beer from buckets. A membership fee of $100 was set, but no one came up with any money. (As one of those present, George Halas, the legendary owner of the Chicago Bears, said, "I doubt that there was a hundred bucks in the room.") From such modest beginnings, pro football became far and away the most popular spectator sport in America. In Pigskin, Robert W. Peterson presents a lively and informative overview of the early years of pro football--from the late 1880s to the beginning of the television era. Peterson describes the colorful beginnings of the pro game and its outstanding teams (the Green Bay Packers, the New York Giants, the Chicago Bears, the Baltimore Colts), and the great games they played. Profiles of the most famous players of the era--including Pudge Heffelfinger (the first certifiable professional), Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Bronko Nagurski, and Fritz Pollard (the NFL's first black star)--bring the history of the game to life. Peterson also takes us back to the roots of the pro game, showing how professionalism began when some stars for Yale, Harvard, and Princeton took money--under the table, of course--for their services to alma mater. By 1895, the money makers--still unacknowledged--had moved to amateur athletic associations in western Pennsylvania and subsequently into Ohio. After the NFL formed in 1920, pro football's popularity grew gradually but steadily. It burst into national prominence with the Bears-Redskins championship game of 1940. As one sportswriter put it: "The weather was perfect. So were the Bears." The final score was 73-0. Peterson shows how, after World War II, the newly-created All America Football Conference challenged the NFL. Though dominated by a gritty Cleveland team, the AAFC was never viewed by NFL teams as much of a threat. That is, not until 1950 when the two leagues merged, bringing about the Cleveland Browns-Philadelphia Eagles game in which the Browns buried the Eagles 35-10. An elegy to a time when, for many players, the game was at least as important as the money it brought them (which wasn't much), Pigskin takes readers up to the 1958 championship game when the Baltimore Colts beat the New York Giants in overtime. By that time, the great popularity of the game had moved from newspapers and radio to television, and pro football had finally arrived as a major sport.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Pro Football History.......2005-04-24

What I most like about this book is the author's dedication to historical accuracy. It was apparent that the author weighed the reliability of different accounts of what happened in order to give a true picture of pro football's past. Often this meant discarding some of the more colorful but dubious stories frequently repeated in other books.

I was impressed with the sources used for the book. Sources included research of the Professional Researchers Association, other respected books and authors, and original interviews of star and more ordinary former players as well as coaches.

The book spans the era of pro football from the late 1800's to the 1958 NFL championship game. Roughly the first third of the book is devoted to the pre-NFL days of pro football prior to 1920. There are 16 pages of photos. The quality of these photos- even considering that they are old- is not good, unlike the cover photo, which is very good.

I did not find the book difficult to read. This is a book I would recommend to anyone of high school age or older who wants a good foundation on the history of pro football. This book delivers a solid, straight-forward account of how pro football developed.

2 out of 5 stars Pigskin lacks the moves to score a touchdown.......2004-02-22

While this book contains lots of interesting historical facts and little known tidbits of information on pro football's rise in America, it is written in such a way as to have readers wishing the sport had died at birth.
As I said above, there is very good information on the sport here, but once I read the particular nugget I don't need it given to me again on the next page, or the next, or the next. The author is very repetative and some of the chapters go on forever with really no new facts given.
The second thing you might notice is that the author likes to play with seldom used "big words" from the English language. Not a problem if used in moderation, but here they are so frequent as to disrupt the flow of the story and makes the book difficult to read.
The final penalty here is the bad editing. There are either numerous mispellings, or he is using words I never learned in school. There are also several spots in the book where [] appear around letters or whole words. I'm not sure what those are there for, but someone must have thought they needed to be there I guess. Alo, many of the chapters are badly arranged, bits of story seemingly thrown in wherever there was room.
In conclusion I found this book hard to read and only finished it because i'm a die-hard football fan. Makes a good read if you're an insomniac though.
