Book Description
Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art documents the growing presence of Buddhist perspectives in contemporary culture. This shift began in the nineteenth century and is now pervasive in many aspects of everyday experience. In the arts especially, the increasing importance of process over product has promoted a profound change in the relationship between artist and audience. But while artists have been among the most perceptive interpreters of Buddhism in the West, art historians and critics have been slow to develop the intellectual tools to analyze the impact of Buddhist concepts. This timely, multi-faceted volume explores the relationships between Buddhist practice and the contemporary arts in lively essays by writers from a range of disciplines and in revealing interviews with some of the most influential artists of our time. Elucidating the common ground between the creative mind, the perceiving mind, and the meditative mind, the contributors tackle essential questions about the relationship of art and life.
Among the writers are curators, art critics, educators, and Buddhist commentators in psychology, literature, and cognitive science. They consider the many Western artists today who recognize the Buddhist notion of emptiness, achieved through focused meditation, as a place of great creative potential for the making and experiencing of art. The artists featured in the interviews, all internationally recognized, include Bill Viola, and Ann Hamilton. Extending earlier twentieth-century aesthetic interests in blurring the boundaries of art and life, the artists view art as a way of life, a daily practice, in ways parallel to that of the Buddhist practitioner. Their works, woven throughout the book, richly convey how Buddhism has been both a source for and a lens through which we now perceive art.

extraordinary.......2006-10-02
Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art is such an extraordinary book that, as an art critic, I can only applaud its editors, Jacquelynn Baas and Mary Jane Jacob, as well as the writers who participated in its creation. The innovative concept of exploring artistic responses to, or reflections on, Buddhist philosophy and practices, has been dealt with thorough care and inclusiveness.
The artist interviews in the second section of the book open up a deeper understanding and awareness of contemporary visual artists. Happily, the emphasis is on artists, who have achieved a significant amount of international recognition for their work. What has been less well known, and what this book so admirably illuminates, are the links between their artwork and Buddhist thought.
I would highly recommend this book for artists in all disciplines as a potential source of inspiration for their own artwork. Educators, and all those interested in contemporary culture and the arts, would find much food for thought in the essays and the many color images.

Book Description
Jane Lindskold's Through Wolf's Eyes; Wolf's Head, Wolf's Heart; and The Dragon of Despair told the story of Firekeeper, the young girl raised by sentient, language-using wolves who is then plunged back into human society, where her training as a pack animal stands her in good stead amidst political and dynastic intrigues. Now, in Wolf Captured, the focus returns to Firekeeper and her wolf companion Blind Seer, as they find themselves kidnapped and dragged overseas, and forced to maneuver for their lives in an unfamiliar and dangerous new society. The Liglimoshti worship animals and portents, which rule their lives. And the Liglimoshti are aware, as the other countries are not, that Royal animals like Truth and Blind Seer exist, are intelligent, and can speak to each other. They've kidnapped Firekeeper and Blind Seer because they've never before heard of a human who could talk to animals. They want to see what Firekeeper can do. They want her to teach them how to do it.Firekeeper's more than willing to talk to the animals there. But she fears that Liglim's Royal animals are being held in polite and unobtrusive bondage. She wants to find out the truth -- and, if necessary, free them....
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating new land.......2007-06-12
I admit that I really did NOT like the stories related to New Kelvin (the previous two books). But, I found Liglimom and the related adventures to be fascinating and engaging.
I find myself comparing Jane's world and character descriptions very favorably to Robert Jordon -- without Robert's tendancy to fill chapters (and books) with meaningless plot distractions.
The lands and their people feel real. The people talk, look, and THINK differently from each other.
I'm going to miss these characters while we wait for the next book.
A Broadening of Horizons.......2006-11-20
Wolf Captured (2004) is the fourth fantasy novel in the Wolf series, following The Dragon of Despair. In the previous volume, Firekeeper was called by the Dragon and arrived midway through Melinda's incantation. While the others fought those enchanted by Melinda, Firekeeper, Citrine and Grateful Peace spoke to the Dragon.
After explaining the costs of commanding the Dragon to Citrine, Grateful Peace used the Dragon's correct name and ensorcelled the beast to himself. Melinda tried to attack him and Firekeeper permanently removed her from the scene. Even Citrine didn't object to the killing. Later Grateful Peace sent the Dragon back to its original environment and adopted Citrine as his daughter.
In this novel, strangers lure Firekeeper, Blind Seer and Derian from a public dance, capture them, and take them down the river to the sea. Firekeeper frees herself from her cage and breaks the chains and cage holding Derian and Blind Seer. Then they overcome their kidnappers, but the nearest ship holds more intruders and swiftly overtakes the riverboat. The three of them have little choice other than surrender.
One of those aboard the ship is Waln Endbrook, who has no love for the threesome, and a few other Islander sailors. The ship, however, is commanded and manned by members of an unknown colony far south of Bright Haven. As the ship sails south, Firekeeper and Derian are allowed to give their parole and taught some of the language of the foreign colony by Harjeedian, an interpreter of snakes, and Barnet, a former minstrel in the Islander Navy.
When the ship reaches Liglim, Firekeeper learns about the yarimaimalom, the Wise Beasts, who are the equivalent of the Royal Beasts such as Blind Seer. Yet these intelligent animals are much more integrated into Liglimom society. They had been hunted by the Old Country masters to use as sacrifices to the Deities. But the Divine Retribution of fever and death drove out the masters and forever changed the relationships between Liglimom and yarimaimalom.
The yarimaimalom are now seen as speakers for the Deities, but the disdum who interpret for the yarimaimalom don't always understand their meanings. Since the Liglimom first learned of Firekeeper, they have sought her out to teach them to speak with the yarimaimalom. Still, Firekeeper doesn't think that she can teach them to talk to the Wise Beasts in the way that she does.
In this story, Firekeeper and Blind Seer meet Truth, a jaguar who divines the futures by swimming through the possibilities. Truth tells her of Misheemnekuru, the Sanctuary Islands, where many of the yarimaimalom live and keep watch against the return of the masters from the Old Country. Soon Firekeeper and Blind Seer are on their way to Misheemnekuru to meet the Wise wolves.
Meanwhile, Derian meets Varjuna, the chief keeper of the Horses, and exchanges tales of horses and their care. Soon he is visiting u-Bishinti, the main stables of Liglim. There he is introduced to Varjuna's family. He is also offered a ride by Eshinarvash, a Wise Horse. Derian is thorough enchanted by the experience.
Derian receives another ride by Eshinarvash to meet a jaguar and a puma who have something for him to see. Outside the main city, hidden in jungle, is a short ziggurat being used to sacrifice animals to the Deities. After witnessing these sacrifices, Derian starts a conspiracy to destroy this cult.
This story broadens Firekeeper's experiences with humans and Beasts. She also learns something about herself and about her family. She even meets someone who knew her father and mother.
Highly recommended for Lindskold fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of intelligent animals, feral children, and magic.
-Arthur W. Jordin
The series keeps getting better and better.......2006-04-18
I love the Firekeeper series and this book has to be one of my favorite books from it. The storyline and the characters are amazing. This book is definitely a page turner and it will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end. Jane Lindskold is one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to read Wolf Hunting.
The Best Firekeeper Book Yet!.......2006-03-20
As a recent fan of Jane Lindskold's tales of the wolf-girl Firekeeper, I was impressed by the engaging manner in which this novel, the fourth in the saga, began. In contrast to the preceding novels, Wolf Captured begins in the midst of action and intrigue, and the reader's heart races from the very first sentence. Although, due to the nature of the story, some well-known, well-loved characters are sadly absent, Lindskold more than makes up for this by introducing us to new and interesting characters, both human and Beast.
Once again, we find ourselves in the midst of a battle involving magic, political intrigue, strange cultures, and, of course, new friends among the Royal Beasts! New relationships are established between human and Beast. Questions about Firekeeper's mysterious past are answered. Once again, the reader is left panting for more.
Jane Lindskold is one of the best storytellers in modern Fantasy, and this is one of her best works!
Captured My Heart.......2006-03-18
Ok that was kinda corny, but I really loved this book. I loved the previous books from this series, but what I really loved about this one is that it seems like without all the other characters (Elise, Doc, Edlin, etc) you really get a chance to enjoy Firekeeper, Blind Seer, and Derian. In the other books there's alot of jumping around from one character's perspective to another's. There is still some of that in this book, but it's mostly focused on Firekeeper and Blind Seer, and Derian. In this book, we finally get a chance to delve deeper into Firekeeper's and Blind Seer's relationship. I can go on and on about this book, but suffice it to say that it's exciting, poignant, funny, and I definitely recommend it.
-Just as a side note Rahniseeta got on my nerves. She was too melodramatic and .... needy/weaker/self-absorbed (?). She wasn't anything like Firekeeper and Elise and Wendee Jay and Sapphire, which is probably a good thing because it is a change but unlike other readers I wasn't disappointed with what happens in the end. I'm not saying what because I don't believe in ruining the story for others. So finally...ENJOY!!!!

Book Description
Like the better-known Mitfords, the Garman sisters took center stage in Bohemian London during the first half of the twentieth century. Beautiful, flamboyant, and headstrong, they broke away from middle-class conventions, seducing and inspiring a generation of artists. Kathleen, an enigmatic artist's model and aspiring pianist, was the lover and, later, wife of controversial American-born sculptor Jacob Epstein. Mary married the maverick poet Roy Campbell, whose verse attack on the Bloomsbury group following Mary's affair with Vita Sackville-West was the literary scandal of the epoch. Lorna, the youngest and most beautiful of the sisters, was the lover of both the painter Lucian Freud and the poet Laurie Lee.
The Rare and the Beautiful offers the first portrait of a beguiling band of eccentric siblings who possessed an uncanny ability to turn heads, break hearts, and spark creative genius. Set against the exciting backdrop of London's decadent subculture, it evokes their extraordinary milieu of high culture, drama, and scandal.

Where's the next volume?!.......2005-03-24
This story is a strong but gracious nod to the works of great old horror writers like H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Lord Dunsany and others. It's the story about an ancient, almost impossible discovery in the Himalayan mountains that will change the way the world views human history, indeed even the relevance of human history. This is a contemporary story about an ancient and evil history and whether the world is ready for the horror in it's past now reaching into the present. The sole survivor of the expedition which found the great, but horrible discovery is also, somehow the focus of this old evil trying to impose itself on the modern world.
Written by Xavier Dorison sequential art provided by Mathieu Lauffray. This book was originally released in Europe and the creators are French if I'm not mistaken. The translation of the story is provided by Justin Kelly.
If you like comics like Hellboy, Conan, the Marquis or even Hellblazer this book may be for you.
The reason I can't give this book 5 stars is because I can't find a follow-up volume.

Kurt Weill - On Stage: From Berlin to Broadway
ASIN: 0030194113 |
Amazon.com
Born in 1900 into a German Jewish family, Kurt Weill gained fame as composer of The Threepenny Opera and other politically charged works written by Bertolt Brecht. He reinvented himself in America; by his death in 1950 he had written several popular Broadway shows ("Lady in the Dark") and one indisputably classic tune, "September Song." This solid biography capably covers Weill's life (including a tactful account of his unconventional marriage to Lotte Lenya), but concentrates on the music, refuting charges that Weill's American work betrayed his talent in search of commercial success.
Customer Reviews:
The Definitive Biography of a Musical Genius.......2003-07-01
Very often, scholarship on Kurt Weill tends to favor his German works such as "The Threepenny Opera" or "Mahagonny," however Sanders account spans the entire length of Weill's career. From his beginnings in Berlin with Busoni, to his German hits with Brecht, to his flight to America and "Johnny Johnson," to his Broadway successes with "Knickerbocker Holiday," "Lady in the Dark," and "One Touch of Venus." Sanders presents each era of Weill's life with the same objectivity. He calls for an approach to Weill that encompasses Weill's entire career.
If you are thinking of doing any research on Kurt Weill, THIS is the place to start.
Way beyond the Three Penny Opera.......1999-08-18
I just finished this book and was mightily impressed. My esteemed predecessor in these reviews has summarized the book very well, leaving me the opportunity to comment on a single important aspect of the book. When you mention Weill's name, people think of only one thing (if they know him at all). The Three Penny Opera. This book emphatically puts his '20 something work with Brecht in perspective, showing that he continued to grow and develop throughout his career. The narrative is keen and passionate. The details of the creative periods and production periods of various works are gripping. My net response is: there is a lot more to this man's creative output than just The Three Penny Opera and Mahagony (son of 3-penny?). He deserves to be heard; will he?
An old cliché: a must for all music lovers.......1998-11-14
Biographies (especially those of people from the entertainment industry) have become a fad since the early 80's, and most of them, however entertaining, don't add much to our knowledge of their subject and time. One admirable exception is this account about Kurt Weill and his lifetime by Ronald Sanders. Since the very beginning, Mr. Sanders manages to give us a vivid portrait of how was Germany since the years before Weill was born, how was life like in those days for Jewish people there, and the great composer's musical roots: his father was a Cantor, and many of his ancestors were professional or amateur musicians. To say only that Mr. Sanders' account is full of painstainkingly researched details would be unjust, for he goes far beyond that. He uses all these details to make us understand and feel in depth the makings of a remarkable career that unfortunately didn't last so long (Weill died prematurely, at 50). Mr. Sanders not only treats us to an unforgettable tour of 20th Century's troubled first half but also gives us a thorough knowledge of how music evolved from the days of Ferrucio Busoni and Gustav Mahler to Kurt Weill's works in the U.S., with lots of information about other great artists like Arnold Schoenberg, Bertolt Brecht, Lotte Lenya, how Weill created such masterpieces as "Dreigroschenoper", "Knickerbocker Holiday", "Lady in the Dark", and so on. You can say that this is a cliché, but, if you are, like me, interested in anything related to the best music that was produced in the 20th Century, don't miss "The Days Grow Short". And if you are already a fan of Kurt Weill's, this book will make you even more appreciative of him and his music. I recommend that you read this biography with your CD player on. You'll enjoy it even more when Mr. Sanders speaks of Weill's perennial creations, like "Mack the Knife", "September Song", "Speak Low", "Lost in the Stars", "My Ship"...

Customer Reviews:
Slightly-dated, but a GREAT overview of the issues.......2002-01-06
A part of the "Opposing Viewpoints" series, "The Information Revolution" is a compilation of 18 articles (written by different authors including noted scholars, government officials and business leaders, and drawn from various journals, magazines, presentations, reports, etc.) which addresses many topics dealing with the on-going Information Revolution and its effect on today's society. An interesting book, it gives the reader a well rounded grounding into the issues that surround the Internet from including its effect on education and the workplace to other social issues such as privacy invasion, copyright infringement, the first amendment and the posting of controversial content online, to universal access and the issue of "haves" and "have nots." Reading this book gives any reader an appreciation for the controversy that is the Internet and the resulting Information Revolution. In the process of reading this book the reader gains an appreciation for and an introduction to the Internet and the impact it has had on society in such a short period of time.
The articles are presented in point-counterpoint format which is very accessible, addressing for major topics: the Information Revolution's effect on society, its effect on education, its effect on the workplace and its effect on human rights.
These are the topics the book addresses:
1. Will the Information Revolution benefit society?
2. Is society suffering from information overload?
3. Will it transform education?
4. Should schools emphasize computer education or not?
5. What will its effect be on the University system?
6. Will it transform the workplace?
7. What will its effect be on jobs?
8. Will it create a society of "have" and "have nots?"
9. Does it threaten people's right to privacy?
10. What is the constitutionality of banning indecent content?
11. What will its effect be on intellectual property rights?
In addition the book also contains a bibliography of sources and list of agencies' contact addresses which are beneficial to students doing research.
Written back in the mid-1990s some of the technological issues and problems discussed have already come to pass and been resolved. However, the social issues that are discussed are still very relevant even today, a few years down the road.
Overall, this book is a GREAT introduction to the Internet and its many problems and issues. The articles, though at times some are a little inaccessible, are very thought-provoking and at times the revelations of quite shocking. You get a good picture as to "both sides" of the issue and therefore get a deeper understanding of the many problems and concerns the Information Revolution has brought about.
I read this book as a supplementary text for a telecommunications course I took back in 1998. It is a great overview to Internet issues and a great tool for discussion and critical thinking. In sum, it is worth a read.
Recommended.

Disappointed.......2005-01-17
This book disappointed me. I had high expectations, and the book certainly didn't live up to me.
When I think of a good 'debate book', I think of interaction. Interaction is very vital to allow readers to properly compare two opposing sides and sift through their positions.
This book failed in the area of interaction. To me, it almost seems like laziness. They just grabbed exerpts from pre-published articles, and merely pasted them together. Consequently, some of the "opposing" view points didn't evenly match each other or even address the same areas. There is nothing necessarily wrong with publishing a book out of pre-published matter--if it is done right. In this case, I don't think it was done right.
In my opinion, this book could have been much better if they had rather contacted the authors of these articles. They could give authors a small statement to respond to, and right an original essay. That way they couldhave had the authors addressing similar points. It would really make this more of an enjoyable read. Of course that would take effort and money, but that's what you need to compile a good book, right?
This book manifests all the downsides of the approach they took; it seems canned, artificial, the various essays don't seem to address the opposing articles points head-on, and it has a very patchy and scrappy feel to it. I found the book disjointed and often felt like a person on a boat being tossed around in the sea.
If you are interested in technology, you will find some interesting content here, but then again I don't think its worth a buy because of the lack of effort in making their content original. Do yourself a favour and get another book.
