Albertus Seba's Cabinet of Natural Curiosities is one of the 18th century's greatest natural history achievements and remains one of the most prized natural history books of all time.Though it was common for men of his profession to collect natural specimens for research purposes, Amsterdambased pharmacist Albertus Seba (1665-1736) had a passion that led him far beyond the call of duty. His amazing, unprecedented collection of animals, plants and insects from all around the world gained international fame during his lifetime. In 1731, after decades of collecting, Seba commissioned illustrations of each and every specimen and arranged the publication of a four-volume catalog detailing his entire collection—from strange and exotic plants to snakes, frogs, crocodiles, shellfish, corals, insects, butterflies and more, as well as fantastic beasts, such as a hydra and a dragon. Seba's scenic illustrations, often mixing plants and animals in a single plate, were unusual even for the time. Many of the stranger and more peculiar creatures from Seba's collection, some of which are now extinct, were as curious to those in Seba's day as they are to us now.
This reproduction is taken from a rare, hand-colored original. The introduction offers background information about the fascinating tradition of the cabinet of curiosities to which Seba's curiosities belonged.

A fabulous visual treat.......2007-07-26
I'm not a biologist or scientist of any kind. But I am a fan of Taschen's publications and admire his goal of publishing high-quality photo/art books at reasonable prices. I happened to come across this book while browsing in the bookshop, was attracted by the Taschen name on the cover, took a peek inside and bought it on the spot. It was only afterwards that I discovered the history and historical significance of this collection. It's a beautiful book, filled with brilliantly colored illustrations of reptiles, butterflies, plants and animals. Great stuff and a real education for a layman like me.

The old prints are just beautiful. Before photographs, books like these had hand painted reproductions of the animals. The detail is amazing. One can only imagine how long it must have taken to prepare these works.And collect the specimens.Check out the 7 headed hydra! And cheers to Taschen for another beautiful art book.

As a biologist, this book is for me the the marriage between science and art. A great collection of specimens drawn into a catalog from so long ago, it's a beautiful thing that it was saved and published. Just be warned, this book is BIG.

My brother and I fell on the ground laughing hysterically at the illustrations and captions--although this was 9 years ago
we still get a good laugh out of it. We almost got kicked out of the bookstore for disturbing the others.

As a life-long cat LOVER, I was suprised to find myself laughing hysterically at nearly every page in this book. The pictures and the light-hearted text are too cute and silly to be taken as malicious. The best advice - wait.

I got this book up at a used book store, I love it! It's hilarious, and I have to keep telling my mom not to let our siamese cat see it. It's one of my 3 books I always have on hand, and I read it all the time. My fave exits are turkey and microwave. Makes a good coffee table book, and a good gift, cat-lover or cat-hater. Just DON'T get any ideas! Have fun!

The book provides in-depth analysis of the origins and dimensions of the conflict, including detailed accounts of the evolution of ethnic and religious identities, the breakdown of local administration, the emergence of Arab militia and resistance movements, and regional dimensions to the conflict.
The study also focuses on the search for peace, with contributions by those most closely engaged in local and international efforts to resolve the conflict. This includes documentation and analysis of the warring parties' ideologies and agendas and how they have changed in the course of the conflict, and examination of the efforts made by Sudanese civil and political leaders, the African Union, and other international actors to bring the war to an end.

In this book, David Davenport covers all aspects of the equity manager search from finding the right names through evaluating the performance of the equity manager after he or she has been hired. As Davenport notes at the outset, the choice of an investment manager for a corporate pension fund can have far-reaching implications for plan performance and is, therefore, one of the most important responsibilities of the pension manager. However, he notes, most pension plan sponsors feel compelled to retain an outside consultant to hire the fund's equity managers, feeling they do not possess the expertise necessary to conduct a thorough search. Arguing that pension managers would be better served by conducting the search themselves--not only will they save the fund thousands of dollars in fees but they will also have a much-improved vision of the investment management business--Davenport presents a clear and straightforward guide to the equity manager search from the plan sponsor's perspective. The book is organized chronologically by search stage and begins with thorough discussion of search criteria. In a section entitled "Getting Started," Davenport shows how to find the right names and how to sort through, analyze, and verify candidates' performance claims. Subsequent chapters address preparing the investment questionnaire, the screening process, visiting the investment manager, and testing for consistent results. Davenport then demonstrates techniques for culling the list, selecting the finalists, narrowing the choice to one candidate, and presenting the candidate to the pension committee. The final chapter discusses performance expectations and measurement, management review, performance factors, and other issues related to the evaluation of the equity manager's performance. Numerous tables and figures illustrate points made in the text. Several appendixes include additional helpful information including a Report of the FAF Committee for Performance Presentation Standards and a performance analysis spreadsheet. Corporate and public pension fund managers will find this book an invaluable aid in their attempts to field the best team of managers for the funds over which they preside.
