Book Description
This dynamic book reveals the limitless creative possibilities of colored pencils when blended with mixed media. It features the work of today's most innovative colored pencil artists, highlighting a range of new and exciting effects in step-by-step detail.
Designed to be instantly gratifying and wholly achievable, these techniques incorporate pastel, solvents, airbrush, watercolor, acrylic, ink and more. Each chapter clearly demonstrates how readers can re-create techniques in their own work.
They'll find plenty of information on tools, materials and each medium's basic characteristics. A final section includes line drawings of the demonstrations so that readers can concentrate on their new skills without worrying about getting the drawing right.
Customer Reviews:
Not just useful..........2007-03-28
but FUN!
This book is full of creativity and good instruction...in fact, I have had an airbrush for awhile and couldn't quite get the hang of it. A simple step was being missed that I didn't realize...but I found that simple step in the general description of how to use the airbrush.
There are many other exciting techniques in here, and I am soooo glad I went ahead and ordered it.
Lots of beautiful and unique work too...not just the same ol bunch of flowers, cherries, limes, oranges, and grapes. Some of that is there...but so is an abstract tapestry!
Inspiring ideas off the beaten path.......2006-10-11
This book is chock-full of ideas for colored pencil that depart from the standard blending and sketching methods. If you are an ultra-realist, there is a demonstration (or at least an example) of a cat sitting in sunlight that will knock your socks off.
If you are not an ultra realism fan, however, there are other demonstrations that depart from this genre. For example, there is a demonstration of a crumpled paper abstract technique that would suit a collage artist, especially one who makes or collects handmade papers. There is a section on masking and using airbrush; not something I'm likely to deal with but still, interesting to read. There are also demonstrations of colored pencil with watercolor underlay, grissage and other techniques.
This book does what it is titled; explorations. If you are looking for a how-to in colored pencil standard technique, this book won't be the one you want to start with. But if you want to explore the medium and spread your wings, this book is a beautiful inspiriation.
Great Inspirations for Colored Pencil Use.......2005-03-21
Expands the repertoire of colored pencils by including their use with other media. The result is mixed media at its best. This is not a book for people who need a paint by numbers approach, but it should not be shunned by beginners. There are many demonstrations in the book which take the artist (or would-be artist) by the hand and show how the subject was created, down to a precise list of what materials were use, including brand names of pencils and other media. The book utilized the works of several artists and explained their techniques in very clear language. Yes, some of the techniques are advanced, but this should provide inspiration for a beginner, not discouragement.
For the more advanced artist, the book explodes with ideas for combining a wide variety of media in ways that most of us have not considered previously. I was particularly intrigued with the example of using Mylar in a reverse painting technique. I recommend this book for anyone with artist's block; it will certainly help to "jump-start" your creative engine again.
Not a practical book.......2004-04-07
This is a book which explores the combination of colored pencil with a myriad of other techniques. This is a book for the advanced colored pencil artist wishing to expand their horizons. Definitely not a how to book- not very practical.
Gets the Creative Juices Flowing.......2004-03-14
This book is a wonderful addition to your colored pencil library. It gives you the basic info on combining several different mediums with colored pencil and gives helpful info for all. Many GREAT demos. With the amount of mediums it gives, you can't expect them to go into great detail and they don't. Remarkable amount of helpful info in each chapter, though. The airbrush/colored pencil strawberry demo is so lush and juicy it's incredible. Makes me wish I owned an airbrush. Too bad they cost so much! The galleries are another great feature. This book is very inspiring. If you want specifically info on just combining colored pencil with watercolor and ink, there are several books devoted to just that combination (Creating Radiant Realism is Watercolor, Ink, and Colored Pencil, several Claudia nice books).

A volcano could be called a sleeping mountain--that is, until it wakes up! What is it like to witness the eruption of one of nature's majestic time bombs? Young readers can learn what makes volcanoes "tick," and read about some of the most famous eruptions in history.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing book ... cross curricular!.......2006-08-14
This book is great to use in a center when teaching a unit on landforms and is also great for those kids who are aching to know more about the science rhelm of volcanoes. It's age appropriate and children at the Step 4 reading level will be challenged enough with it. :)
volcanoes mountains of fire.......2003-10-02
I think that this is a good book and I know that this is a good book. The part I like about it is when the volcano erupts. The part I don't like about it is when people died.I
would recommend this to a 4th grade reader and I would have preferred for it to have more pages. I give it a 5 stars because it has nice pictures and I learned new information about volcanoes.
Product Description
The recent volcanic activity at Mount St. Helens is a continuing reminder of the explosive power of our western volcanoes. Fire Mountains of the West: The Cascade and Mono Lake Volcanoes is Stephen Harris s completely revised, thoroughly researched account of the volatile history and deadly potential of volcanoes spanning the West from California to southwestern British Columbia. Fire Mountains of the West is intended for the general reader with an interest in the geologic forces that shape our western mountainscape. It begins with an introduction to volcanoes, the processes that create them, and the glaciers that sculpt them. The heart of the book is a fascinating biography of each of the major volcanoes of the West. From the subterranean lava tube caves of the Medicine Lake volcano to the fire-and-ice formation of Mount Garibaldi, from the cataclysmic collapse of Crater Lake to the incinerating blast of modern Mount St. Helens, and from deadly volcanic gas presently killing trees at Mammoth Mountain to massive mudflows waiting to burst from Mount Rainier, Stephen Harris brings to life in dynamic, crystal-clear language the geologic story behind each of the major volcanoes of the Cascade Range and Mono Lake area. Dramatic photos and illuminating maps and diagrams graphically illustrate the features of these magnificent mountains. A brief section at the end of each chapter gives directions and descriptions for those visiting the volcano. Harris also offers a careful appraisal of the prospects of each for future eruptions some of which may be more devastating to human life and property that any in the past. The book ends with a hypothetical account of a future eruption at Mount Shasta. With a rare ability to describe geologic processes in layperson s terms and elegant prose, Harris inspires in readers great respect and awe for the rugged beauty as well as the violent potential of these majestic fire mountains.
Customer Reviews:
Fire Mountains of the West, 3rd Edition is excellent!.......2007-06-17
Anyone interested in the history and inner workings of each of the Cascade volcanoes will find this book rewarding. Like its predecessors, the 3rd edition is well organized and clearly written. But the new edition is greatly expanded with many more (and carefully documented) technical details. The introductory chapters on volcano formation and glaciers provide a nice overview. Chapters on the individual land forms (from the 'shield' Newberry Volcano to Crater Lake and Mt. Rainier) portray a range in vulcanism. Descriptions for visitors will enhance a trip to any of the sites.
A fascinating geologic history.......2003-11-09
Stephen Harris' Fire Mountains Of The West provides a fascinating geologic history of the Cascade and Mono Lake volcanoes of California. One might anticipate a technical discourse involving many geological facts: think again: this title provides an unusually lively, engaging dialogue which assumes no prior scientific background. From specific hazards of volcanoes to keys to viewing inactive volcanoes, this is an important guide.
This book is awesome........2003-08-06
Dr. Harris has provided an outstanding guide to the Cascades here. He provides wonderful detail on all the big Cascade volcanoes from Garibaldi to Lassen, and covers Mono Lake/Long Valley, a geologically unstable area that deserves far more attention, as a bonus. Especially welcome is his information on Glacier Peak and Newberry, two of the most overlooked volcanoes of the Northwest. The geological detail is mid-range; Harris explains the chemical composition of different types of lava but does not overwhelm readers with charts and graphs.
Harris sometimes crosses over into the realm of tour guide, as he provides basic instructions on how to visit and climb the Cascade volcanoes, and he provides welcome information about the prehistoric and modern histories of the mountains, including the stories about how they got their many names (the story behind Mount Adams is great). Also included is a wealth of information about glaciers and the conflict between 'fire and ice.' However, this book is primarily designed to be a lesson about the nature of the 'fire mountains,' and there Harris succeeds on every level.
If you are remotely interested in geology, like to hike or climb in the Pacific Northwest, or simply live there yourself, you ought to know the story and potential of Rainier, Hood, St. Helens, and their kin. This is especially true if you have Hood or Rainier as a neighbor! Highest possible reccomendation.
Great book for nongeologists!.......2003-08-05
For those of us with an interest in geology, but no degree in the field, this is a well written, easy to read and understand treatment of the subject of Cascades volcanos. It was a thoroughly enjoyable adventure into the world of vulcanism. Well worth reading.
A useful, accurate guide to a beautiful, exciting region.......2002-03-07
Stephen Harris may be one of the last non-specialist authors. He doesn't confound the reader with copious scientific jargon. Insstead he conveys his love for what may be one of the last wild regions in the United States. In addition to excellent, understandable discussions of each volcano's potential danger and past history, Harris' technique enables the reader to use his book and a simple road map to plot the reader's own choice of which delightful scenic areas to visit. We visited the Oregon and southern Washington Cascades, as well as Mount Shasta, last September, and without Harris' well-planned guidebook, we would have missed many sights, such as Mount Newberry, and would have failed to fully appreciate others, such as the Columbia Gorge.
Harris' doesn't overwhelm the reader with propaganda about environmental spoliation by logging companies, but simply lets the facts speak for themselves. The book is an absolute must for anyone planning a vacation, in whole or in part, in the Cascades or Mono Lake region.

Volcanic Photography.......2000-09-27
This book has some of the best photography of volcanoes I have ever seen. It's a great volcano book.
fire on the mountain.......1999-12-15
I think this book is well writen, and easy to understand, but the thing i like the most about this amazing book is the coolerfull pictures. Most of this book is pictures of erupting valcanoes with captions explaning the pictures. This book taught me many, many things about volcanoes. I recumend this book, Fire on the Mountain for all ages.
Excellent photography & captions, interesting reading.......1999-03-28
This book covers the different types of volcanoes with excellent photographs accompanying and expanding on the text. Even if you just look at the photos, the book's price is worth it, but the text really added to the book as well with very accurate geologic information in a non-textbook format suitable for the general public. The reading level is probably 9th grade and up. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and plan to give more copies to others as gifts.
Gorgeous coffee table book!.......1998-08-05
After having worked and lived on Kilauea volcano, I can assure readers that Dorian Weisel's exquisite photographs are the next best thing to being in Hawaii! While lacking in serious scientific content, Fire on the Mountain is a gorgeous coffee table book that any house guest will enjoy browsing. Fire on the Mountain is also a wonderful introduction to Hawaiian volcanoes for the curious. Carl Johnson's writing is a bit flowery in places, but he describes the beauty and fury of Hawaiian volcanoes with genuine awe and appreciation.

Book Description
Popular science at its best: a spectacular window into both the volcanic past and the fiery future astronomers predict for the solar system.
All the elements that form our planet were originally forged in cosmic furnaces: all the food we eat and thus our bodies themselves recycle molecules and atoms that once knew volcanic fire.
The most activeand most visitedvolcano on earth is Kilauea in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, seen by three million people every year. With its counterpart Piton de la Fournaise, on the French island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, it is characterized by extraordinary lava flows that travel great distances in a spectacular landscape. Together they form the focus of this dazzling photographic essay by two renowned photographers.
The photographs are all reproduced as thumbnails at the end of the book, with caption commentaries, and the reference material includes a glossary of terms. 100+ color photographs.

At last - the real reason why Britain exported convicts to Australia - golf courses had to be designed, locals cajoled into joining, and 19ths appropriately stocked. Did they succeed? This astonishing tour de force of golfing extravaganza leaves us in no doubt.

This is a Humor Book - And it's great!.......2006-12-05
If you thought this book was serious as the previous reviewer did, you may be disappointed. But I don't see how. This book is hilarious. I first bought the America's Toughest Golf Holes years ago and literally laughed so hard I was crying. Have a look at the preview images Amazon provides you - you'll see this book is tongue and cheek and the photos are amazing. Golf lovers will love this book!
Buyer beware.......2006-07-21
As a non-golfer looking for a golf book on Australia for my husband, I thought I'd found something useful when I ordered this book. Turns out this is a "fantasy golf" book whose impossibly located holes have been computer-generated. So if you're ordering it looking for a book that will tell you where to play in Australia, forget it!

Radiohead: The Complete Guide To Their Music.......2007-04-03
Among other things, the back of the book claims to feature "An album by album, track by track analysis". I would like to point out that there is a difference between an analysis and a summary.
If you're looking for a musical and technical analysis you'll be painfully disappointed to recieve five or six sentences briefly describing a song you could just listen to. If you're lucky, you'll get an off-topic anecdote or a far-fetched comparison to an old author favorite. Random refrences to old sixties and seventies bands are a plenty, I'm afraid, and none do anything to give the reader a better idea of the song or its roots.
For example, Lucky is claimed to start out like Neil Young's Heart of Gold "before growing into a man-sized epic of early seventies symphonic rock proportions".
Praising the seventies provides no insight on either music, or even Radiohead. Furthermore, the songs compared are rarely anything alike.
Very Well Written!.......2007-01-12
The author in this book not only did his research, but the way he describes each song and subject is amazing. The book is very specific and very much to the point. Don't be discouraged with the size of the book. This book has all the information you need. A "must have" for a Radiohead fan!

Book Description
By studying six different aspects of culture in Canton in the period between the two World Wars, this book helps broaden our limited knowledge of the social and cultural lives of the common people in this largest city of South China. The author examines how the Cantonese in this period indulged in their imagined cultural superiority as "modern" citizens, ushering in a cult of the modern city. During this period, Cantonese opera was also emerging and evolving into a widely accepted form of commercialised mass entertainment. The process of social and cultural change and its impact on the development of this city and its people are revealed throughout the book. This book also aims to redress some major misconceptions of the socio-cultural realities as seen in official rhetoric or academic discourse on the matters of patriotism and anti-foreignism, gambling, prostitution, and opium consumption. Contemporary non-official and folk materials reveal that the common people were much more pro-Western than xenophobic in attitude, and the alleged social and political "calamities" of gambling, opium consumption and prostitution were more rhetorical than real. Understanding Canton provides us with, not only a fuller and more comprehensive picture of city life and popular mentalities, but also an important clue to understand how and why the social history of this city was distorted and constructed in ways that suited the political ideology and nation-building agenda of the ruling regimes.
Book Description
Like its predecessors, the Third Edition of this popular text considers the lives of ordinary working people and the problems they faced in the crucial period 1865-1920, while focusing on the impact of industrialization and workers' reactions to it. Pointing out that labor reform was a hard-won, often violent battle, Professor Dubofsky also discusses the development of labor organizations, the impact of immigration on them, and the World War I era alliance between government and labor. New to the Third Edition is a 25-page photographic essay and a consideration of some startling parallels between the national experience of American workers during the age of industrialization and the experience of the American worker over the last two decades.
