5 out of 5 stars Quilt Techniques.......2006-11-16

This is an excellent book for quilters and textile artists interested in exploring contemporary textile techniques and materials. Each stimulating activity is explained clearly and simply, assisted by comprehensive photos.

The second part of the book showcases a range of beautiful contemporary quilts by renowned quilters, which illustrate various modern techniques. Descriptions of the techniques used and effects achieved are helpful and interesting.

This is a useful purchase for a serious contemporary quilter, or quilting group to add to their library. The book is fun, visually attractive, with the projects aimed at assisting quilters to explore new horizons and techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Teaches new techniques thorough a blend of color photos and 12 projects.......2005-08-07

Contemporary Quilting: Exciting Techniques And Quilts From Award-Winning Quilters teaches new techniques thorough a blend of color photos and 12 projects. Thanks to rotary machine cutting there's a whole generation who have never used scissors: the authors interviewed many pros in the quilting industry to gather these challenging new projects.

5 out of 5 stars Missed the whole point.......2005-06-12

The first reviewer obviously missed the whole point of the book and its goals. This was not writen to promote any "new" techniques but to show variations on contemporary ones and to showcase outstanding award winning quilts. The photographs are outstanding and the variety of quilts is a wonderful collection of diverse methods and techniques. Yes, we have seen some of these quilts before but does one ever tire of seeing or admiring outstanding work?
This book encourages the quiltmaker or fabric artist to try something different and to have some fun! So buy the book, feast on the pictures and go have some fun!
I immediately purchased several copies and plan on buying more..Thank you for a beautiful book!

2 out of 5 stars Find one to look at before you buy!!.......2005-05-16

I really dislike giving a 2-star rating to this book. I WANTED to like it, really I did. But it's not a great book. Many of the quilts in the gallery are pieces that I have seen in other books I own. I have always liked many of these quilts - key phrase: ALWAYS LIKED.... as in have seen many, many times. Nearly a fourth of the quilts are five or more years old, and in this information age, that's a long time. As for the techniques section - if you have the Snippets books or the Painting book which Cindy co-authored, you already have about half the techniques. Some of the other techniques (Angelina, photo transfer) are shown in better detail in the Quilting Arts magazine or other books, and two of the "techniques" are just basic traditional piecing with perhaps a slight twist toward contemporary (for ex, stamping on sashing fabrics).

All-in-all, if I'd seen it before I ordered it, Amazon would still own it, and I'd still have my money. Unhappily, it's now the other way around. I know a lot of work goes into writing a book, but these authors should have put their efforts toward a better project. The best thing I can say is that the gallery photography is good (the projects photos less so). And if you don't own many exhibit catalogs or other books on art quilts you may really enjoy this one.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT resource!.......2007-09-11

Can't say enuf about the excellent in-depth knowledge about the video business that's contained in this book. It's not like any of the other video books I've read, which mostly focus on the production side and only talk about how to shoot footage, not what to do with it afterwards. I now know exactly how to sell my videos and how to market myself and increase my profits. I make documentary-style shorts, and this book was full of how-to's and clever suggestions I would never have thought of.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2007-08-21

Before I got this book, I wondered if the info in it would be dated, since video's such a hot field and the book was published in '03. No worries! What I wanted and couldn't find anywhere else, I found here: plenty of innovative ideas and advice about how to turn my hobby into a full time business. I already knew how to operate a camera and edit and where to get info on the latest equipment and gizmos, so what I needed was the business side. I have to say this book literally launched me. I'm now making website videos for all kinds of people. Broadband has made this possible, and the demand is increasing because nobody can afford to have a dull web presence. My customers run the gamut from regular businesses with sizeable commercial sites to individual resume videos to artsy band gigs. This book showed me exactly how to do it. I highlighted practically every page in it and now I'm making a living doing what I love.

      1 out of 5 stars BAD.......2005-05-28

Useless book. This book is mostly an ad for the author's website, and the website is a big ad for the book. This book offers no new ideas, or even any tips. This is the kind of rubish that is weakening the video production business. According to this book any one can go out with their cheap $300 camera and make professional video, WRONG! It is this kind of thinking that makes for horrible clients and is shrinking the market. This book shows no respect for those of us that truely respect the medium.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is a Lifesaver!.......2004-01-04

Before I bought this book, I was a security guard for 10 years in an affluent Chicago suburb. As you can imagine, this wasn't exactly my dream job, so I searched around and found this great book. After pouring over it for a whole day, I decided to take it's advice. One year later I run my own property insurance video business, and I couldn't be happier. I particularly enjoyed the extensive information on marketing. The best part is that some of my old clients as a security guard are now clients of my new business. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a dream of working for themselves as a videographer.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!.......2003-10-22

As a recently out of work mom, I was struggling with the idea of starting my own business from home. There are so many gimmicks out there, all of which I wanted to avoid--not to mention the fact that I wanted to put my creative juices to work! Mr. Hutchins' book helped me do just that by offering invaluable advice on how to not only pick the right video business for me, but also how to market and distribute my work. I highly recommend this book to others who are struggling in our sagging economy. If it worked for me, it'll work for you too!

1 out of 5 stars An Overpriced, Shallow, Book........2004-04-21

This book lacks any real depth. This publisher (Amherst Media) clearly believes in leaving plenty of white space on each page. Of course, they had to considering what little material the author (David Neil Arndt) included. Anyway, most of pages are only about half filled with text and b&w pictures, with the remainder of the page blank. As a result, the entire chapter on "pricing your work," which is only two and a half pages in the book (not enough in itself), would occupy only about a single page if that entire page is filled. In my opinion, a chapter should be longer than a single page of text.

Many job specialities, such as jewelry, fashion, theater, and so on, is covered in only a paragraph or two. Accounting is covered in eleven short paragraphs, with taxes getting seven and insurance eight. Even worse, nothing of real substance is covered in those paragraphs. For example, the paragraph on fashion photography says, "Fashion photos are a subset of advertising photography. They generally attempt to make the clothing look good. Some fashion pictures attempt to set a mood and let the advertising copy make the sale. Still others merely attempt to get attention and show the company logo."

With the exception of three photos with captions ("children can also model fashions"), that's the entire discussion about fashion photography in this book. Since entire books have been written on the subject of fashion photography, surely this author could have found something more to say about how to "make money with your camera" in this field.

In the end, the "recommended reading" chapter is longer than some other chapters in this book, with most of those books not at all related to the subject of this book. I recommend others skip this book and find something else to read.

This was probably a good book in 1975, however, it is just too out of date. The pictures in it are not that hot to start with. There may be a good idea or two in it but I would look at other more recent offerings.

                    Book Description

Geisha is the futuristic tale of Jomi Sohoda, an android with a knack for painting. Adopted early in her development by the Kami family, Jomi has been assimilated into regular human life - except society sees her as an outcast, something less than human. This makes it rather difficult for her to sell her paintings, so to make money, she joins the family bodyguard business, launching herself into a world of action and intrigue, complete with supermodels, jealous ex-husbands, maniacal moguls, robotic armor, and the twisted double-cross of art fakery.

                    3 out of 5 stars Where's the Watsonesque art?.......2004-05-18

I was hoping that the art would be consistent with Andi Watson's chic style found in Breakfast After Noon, but I was disappointed that it was used only in the one-shot. I believe the art would have made all the difference, making Geisha a cozier, enjoyable read. Also, the story's theme seems a bit overplayed already, what with Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep and Aldiss' Supertoys Last All Summer Long. All in all, Geisha is seriously lacking in certain aspects.

                    5 out of 5 stars Geisha Goodness!.......2003-07-10

Geisha is the story of Jomi Sohodo, an android adopted into a loving family, who lives in a world that looks down on "synths" trying to make it in the art world, but has to take a job in the family business, security, to pay her bills...until she's approached by an art dealer (among other unsavory business dealings), Peck, to fake...ahem, reproduce a painting.

Her first security job sees her having to protect one of the highest paid super models, Natasha Hostynek, from ex-manager turned psycho stalker, George Brant who tries to sell candid pictures of them to Peck. But when Peck shows no interest Brant snags an important item from Peck's office who sets his bodyguards, Glock & Spiel, on him.

This is an intricately designed, intertwining, action-packed, chase story with absolutely stunning artwork by Andi Watson. You can see how Andi's art has developed and evolved from the mini to the one-shot, but his intelligent storytelling whether writing or illustrating remains.

Andi knows what to tell and what to illustrate to move the story along. You have to pay attention when you read an Andi Watson book because he inserts so many subtle clues that if you read it too fast you might not get it; facial features, hand gestures, clues in the background, all move the story along. Slow down and enjoy the show.

I forgot how much I liked Geisha and how much was going on in this book until I reread it. The best part about the Complete Geisha is not only do you get the 4-issue mini series, but also the one-shot and short stories in one well designed package.

Be sure to read Andi Watson's Dumped, Breakfast After Noon, and Love Fights from Oni Press and Skeleton Key from Slave Labor Graphics!

If you only read one book on office politics, this has to be it! Unlike so many other titles this avoids generalization and provides clear guidance on what to do about specific tactics used by others to get ahead of you. Absolutely packed with great questions that you can use straight away.

5 out of 5 stars The book I was looking for all along.......2006-05-01

I must've read a stack of "office politics" books before I got to this one.

All the bits and pieces of useful information I managed to collect from the total of them were covered in the first chapter of this book.

This gets straight down to business. The dirty trick and how to counter it.

5 out of 5 stars Made me laugh.......2002-03-08

The book itself is full of some very unique ideas and anecdotes - there's a few I don't think I'd try for fear of a lawsuit, but I appreciated the author's thoughts and sense of the absurd as well.

The most striking and clever bit was the squirting pocket calculator that comes with the book. I was delighted at the little extra and did try it, not expecting much. TO my delight, it worked beautifully and got a good laugh from everyone involved.

Good book, clever ideas, great package.

The book is witty, amusing, obvioulsy intended as a joke, and quite possibly the best guide to doing unto others before they do unto you that has been written in a generation. Buy it, read it, do it.

1 out of 5 stars Crime is not funny.......2001-04-28

Imagine if someone wrote a "funny" book about workplace shootings. A real knee alapper, right? Not! That's exactly how I felt upon reading this -- Fulghum's collection of fifty ways to sabotage your coworkers. My coworkers are my friends, Mr. Fulghum. I have no desire to put laxative in their coffee. Perhaps Mr. Fulghum does. What a laff riot: people soiling themselves in the workplace, losing accounts, et cetera. I am not amused by the torment of others, and I ask one and all not to read this dangerous book.

                      5 out of 5 stars INVALUABLE!.......2002-07-09

I bought this as a college textbook and couldn't survive the class without it. It's very easy to understand, and Finale is by far the most user-friendly and versatle music notation program...I just wish it weren't so expensive.

                      2 out of 5 stars Its a start, but..........2002-01-16

As a teacher of electronic music and a Finale user since 1992, I have been looking for a good, well-written and reasonably priced text on Finale for my students, other than the online documentation (which is actually not so bad in of itself). This book contains some OK beginning exercises for students, but is not what I would expect in a quality textbook on Finale, and for a semester long course in music notation, you run out of topics rather quickly. Particularly, there is no addressing the more powerful aspects of Finale, including the versitale MIDI tool, among other advanced features. I flipped through the Rudolph/Leonard book from Berklee Press briefly, and that looked much more promising, but it is considerably more expensive. Granted, the title of the book does say "Primer", but at the same time, the concept of "Mastering" falls way short with this book.

3 out of 5 stars Hooked on the software but the book................2000-12-02

I began to read with great anticipation but was sorely disappointed. There were too many errors in the 2000 edition, which apparently had been revised in a hurry to catch up with the software upgrade. Many of the existing shortcuts were either inaccurate or, in the case of the new ones, omitted altogether. The author also geared much of his commentary towards Mac users and referred all unexplained problems back to the Final Manual. Very sketchy - and I still have not figured out how to set up the percussion so it sounds like the instruments I want. A complete waste of money.

2 out of 5 stars Too little - too basic and incomplete.......2000-07-07

This book spends too much time explaing computer operation (pull down menus, command keys) and not enough on Finale. Too often as it gets close to having some depth it says "but this is beyond the scope of this book, read your Finale manual." The one page index is worthless. The book does things like wastes 4 pages on a windows/mac keyboard comparison chart and yet does not show how to setup notating a drum kit. If this is your first piece of software, maybe it would be helpful, but if you think it gives insight and tricks beyond your manual, forget it. I feel cheated. I found some mistakes in the book and certainly the title "mastering" is an overstatement.

1 out of 5 stars Superb software, lousy book........1999-06-20

The Finale Primer is a waste. If you purchased Finale 98, the book that comes with it is nearly identical, so I now have virtually the same book twice. Also, it is very poorly indexed and cross-referenced, resulting in much frustration as I try to find assistance on various topics. You are much better off saving your money and using the original manual and HELP screens.

                          Book Description

Re-presenting Rural Culture is a fascinating and authoritative account of theoretically informed research into rural culture. Over the last 15 years - especially in the light of the 'cultural turn' in the social sciences - key questions have been asked about the significance of the cultural ata various scales of rural being. The authors offer a personalized window onto research into rural culture, and in so doing provide a perspective on the broader project of how culture has become increasingly important in more general rural studies. Key issues addressed include: DT In what ways are ruralities made meaningful through cultural construction? DT How do cultural representations of rurality present an interactive context for the choices, tactics and constraints associated with living in the countryside? DT How do ruralities connect into social identities? DT In what ways have new concepts of nature-society relations resulted in a rethinking of representation and rurality? Representing Rural Culture will appeal to senior undergraduate and postgraduate students of geography, anthropology and cultural studies.
