Book Description

As recent research has shown, design not only affects the exterior of an organization—its products, packaging, or identity—it can also be a powerful catalyst for interior change. The economic and financial benefits of strategic design management range from fueling a company's innovation process and boosting supplier relationships to creating completely new markets. In a sweeping effort to make this potential accessible, French researcher Brigitte Borja de Mozota conducted case studies with thirty-seven top international companies, design firms, and designers about their expectations toward and success with strategic design management. DESIGN MANAGEMENT presents the results of this research along with practical examples from the author's twenty years of experience as an international design manager, and within a comprehensive theoretical framework. Written for marketers, business managers, and design managers, DESIGN MANAGEMENT also features the practical tools to implement and manage design, including how to

• Define the role of the design manager in the company's business process
• Choose a design agency that fits into your company
• Create design strategies that boost product value and service performance
• Use design to manage change and foster the innovation process
• Understand how design impacts perceived brand value, customer experience, and return on investment

Companies and leadership profiles presented in this book include campanies Alessi, BMW, Braun, Philips, IBM, Renault, Motorola, Nike, Nissan, Novo, OXO, PRADA, Ralph Lauren, RCA Thomson, Shell, and SONY; designers Philippe Starck, Sadler, Terence Conran, James Dyson, and Mark Sadler; and design consultancies Desgrippes Gobé, Siegel & Gale, FITCH, IDEO, Landor, and Lippincott & Mercer.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good start.......2007-01-19

While the title is promising the book turns out to be more of a collection of literature on the subject. Great quotes about the importance of design can be found throughout the text. Unfortunately, the book never goes into how to use design to build brand value or corporate innovation, although it proves that it should be done. Anyone looking to strengthen their case through quotes, or anyone who is just interested in what people throughout history have done should get this book.
Overall, it is a great effort that doesn't quite fullfill the promise. Worthy nonetheless.

Good overview of the history of Design Management and the value it brings to companies

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Review of Design Management .......2006-03-23

This is a very thorough treatment of a new and growing topic, design management. Brigitte has effectively jumped the gun here, coming up with one of the first significant books in this area. There are often splits between the design and marketing functions in a company, yet she shows, in careful, methodical detail, how they best work together to come up with successful new designs.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting primer.......2005-07-07

This author takes a practical approach to define the key competancies of the field of design maangement. Her scholarship is strong, and her examples and stories are meaningful. If anything, she sees this field both too broadly and too narrowly. Broadly--one might think that design management is the new business religion, seeking to fix it all. Narrowly--She spends less time on the process of design in favor of the activities possible. it is very good in the sense that it is not about industrial deisgn, but truly management.

                        Book Description

Comprehensively describes Indians past and present on all seven Montana reservations, plus the Little Shell people.

From the book: This is a book about more than 50,000 people of Montana, many of whose ancestors called this country their home well before Lewis and Clark reached the mouth of the Yellowstone on the Missouri River. These people are the Indians of the Northern Plains and Columbia Plateau, who now happen to live primarily on the seven Montana reservations.

It was only 125 years ago that they hunted the buffalo in the Big Sky country. Today, through executive order and treaty, many live on reservations that have semi-sovereign legal status in relationship with the state of Montana and the United States government.

The subject of this book is not so much "the Indians of Montana," but rather tribes of people native to Montana who like to be thought of as Assiniboine, Sioux, Gros Ventre, Kootenai, Salish, Blackfeet, Cree, Northern Cheyenne, Crow, and Chippawa. George Snell, an Assiniboine tribal leader, put it simply: "The non-Indian has a way of lumping us all together, and I don't like it. Blacks don't like to be lumped with the Spanish, and Irish don't like to be be lumped with the English, so why does everybody have to call us Indian?"

                        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Montana's Indians: Yesterday and Today.......2007-03-21

This book lists only a single author. However, it reads more like a book written by committee and edited by someone who was either lackadaisical or unwilling to supercede the product of the original writers. At the end of thirty pages I was willing to give it a top score and urge that every American should read it. Soon, the unevenness of the material and some noticeable flaws wore down my confidence in the writer.

In states with significant Native American populations, most non-Indians have an interest, and at least a rudimentary understanding, concerning their Indian neighbors. We share American citizenship and much that dictates our way of life. Unfortunately, the limited knowledge of people living east of the plains states often includes more mistaken information than accurate facts about Indians. All of us, including those just mentioned, are responsible through our representation in the United States government for numerous financial, legal, and boundary dealings with Indian tribes and individuals. The first thirty pages of this book is a good overview of the history and past dealings between the United States government and the tribes. It is general information applicable to all tribes, not just those in Montana. Every American; whether Indian or non-Indian, native born or immigrant; should know at least this much. It is American history, maybe more so than such things as Lewis & Clark or America's participation in the World Wars.

The book's copyright is 1996. Thus it is dated, although I know of nothing that is similar and more recent. After opening with the general history, this book provides a section for each of Montana's seven reservations, and a section on the Little Shell tribe, often called Montana's landless Indians. The breakdown in this book is proper. Most of America's reservations are home to more than one tribe, usually with some sort of combined government (but not necessarily a single treaty). The tribes are too unique in character, government, history, and locality to be lumped together as some authors have done. The basis for the closing section of the book is an interview with Bill Yellowtail, a prominent Crow.

Nearly every page of the book contains at least one picture, although text predominates. About half of the pages contain sidebars, sometimes a page or two long. Some of the sidebars discuss events or other topics pertinent to the main text, often covering a topic involving more than just one tribe. Over half of the sidebars are short biographies of individuals, mostly contemporary Native Americans.

The writing of the main text is typically good. In contrast, the sidebar biographies generally read like the biographies used when introducing speakers at large meetings. They are choppy and overly praise the individuals.

This is a "feel good" book. The author introduces the Bill Yellowtail interview by saying that a thread running through the book traces the indomitable, inspiring courage of people who remain forward-looking and hopeful. This is in contrast to Bill Yellowtail himself who is quoted as urging Indians to take stock of where they are in a brutally honest way. I agree with Yellowtail.

This book ignores or glosses over problems confronting the tribes. Reservation government is troubled by friction between tribes, or even clans within a tribe. There is discord between tribal members living off the reservation and those living on it (typically 40-60 percent live off the reservation). The population on most reservations includes many non-Indians and they frequently own some of the most productive land. Laws and the responsibilities for law enforcement on reservations are confusing and often dysfunctional to the point that some jails are literally held together with duct tape. There isn't any mention in the book of how the U.S. Government has mismanaged trust funds that it holds for the tribes. The list of issues is long and varied.

If a reader were to take this book as an accurate portrayal of conditions on Montana's reservations in 1996, and then read the news coming from the reservations today, the reader would conclude that conditions are worsening. That is totally inaccurate. Native Americans have made great strides in Montana over the past ten years. Unemployment, alcohol problems, and drug addiction are still high but have improved. All of the tribes have improved internal leadership, educational opportunities on the reservations, retention of culture, skill in dealing with the non-Indian world, entrepreneurship, and living conditions on the reservations.

One error in the book is so egregious that it must be addressed. On page 78, the author says, "In 1806, members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition with Captain Clark spent more than a month in Crow Indian country and developed excellent relationships with Crow people." This is totally false. Clark and his group never saw a Crow in Montana. They believed - probably correctly - that the Crow stole all their horses. Clark wrote a vinegary speech reprimanding the Crow but never found a single Crow to whom he could deliver the speech. Such errors destroy a reader's confidence in the book and its author.

During what books often call the "Indian wars," the Indians' losses were varied and unbelievably severe. These same books imply that the "wars" ended with the defeat of Sitting Bull or the massacre at Wounded Knee. That is not exactly true. Armed conflict may have ended, but the assault on Indians continued and will continue. The U.S. Government chips away at Indian land, water, financial entitlements owed the tribes, and treaty rights. People who do not understand governmental relationships with the tribes, or are deliberately hostile to the tribes, frequently dominate the administrative and legislative branches of our government. The judicial branch has often been a final resort for Indian people, and there are numerous examples where even that defense failed. These problems continue to tear at our nation's fabric and all Americans need to be better informed. Unfortunately, there are few sources that are comprehensive, accurate, and readable. This book qualifies only in being readable.

After that, only fire. Only ritual."

Volume Seven of "From Hell: Being a Melodrama in Sixteen Parts" by writer Alan Moore and artist Eddie Campbell contains only one part of the award-winning Jack the Ripper graphic novel (there are ten volumes in all). "Chapter Ten: The Best of All Tailors" covers the murder of murder of Mary Jane Kelly (A.K.A.. Marie Jeanette Kelly, Mary Ann Kelly, Ginger) at 13 Miller's Court on the night of November 9, 1888. The title of the chapter comes from a rhyme that was reported to be the favorite rhyme of William Withey Gull, the physician that Moore casts as Jack the Ripper in this narrative: "If I were a tailor I'd make it my pride / The best of all tailors to be / And if I were a tinker, no tinker beside / Should mend an old kettle like me."

The point Moore makes with the title is, of course, ironic, for the murder of Mary Kelly is considered the last of the recognized Ripper killings (the exact number of victims is in dispute among fervent Ripperologists) and was unique in that it was committed inside the small room where Kelly lived. Because he was not outside where he could be interrupted, as was believed to have happen with Elizabeth Stride on September 30, the Ripper was able to engage in mutilations beyond the scope of what he had done with his prostitute victims to date. In fact, one of the reasons Mary Kelly's murder was assumed to be the last by Jack the Ripper is that it was seen as the climax of his escalating mutilation of his victims. Consequently, Moore's point would be that this was the Ripper's grotesque masterpiece representing his horrific "best." There is an additional irony in that the rhyme mentions a kettle and the cover art for Volume Eight of "From Hell" pictures the melted kettle they found in the fireplace of Kelly's room.

Throughout the "From Hell" series Moore provides an Appendix at the back of each volume in which he notes his supporting evidence and the dramatic liberties he has taken in constructing his narrative argument. There are also some fanciful elements to the story, but they do little to mitigate the horror of what is being depicted. But for this chapter he finds such notes "almost unnecessary, given the singular and specific nature of the event described and the relatively brief span of time over which the said event took place." Moore admits speculation on the order of the mutilation but notes the existing evidence and spends most of his time explaining his trails of thought that led him to depict the murder in this particular fashion.

Moore also points out that the depiction here is a close as he can get to a portrayal of what might have happened on that night, not only in that room but in the Ripper's mind, and that he certainly does not want to get any closer. "The Best of All Tailors" is the bloodiest chapter of "From Hell" and if this was a movie it would be NC-17 (the film adaptation of "From Hell" spared us the graphic details of Kelly's murder, even stopping the description of the police surgeon before it gets to the part that would give you nightmares for a week.

Through deduction, induction and abduction, Moore creates a compelling story and the fact that it is not what really happens has little to do with how much we enjoy "From Hell." Do I believe that Sir William Gull was indeed Jack the Ripper? No, I do not. I have heard many theories regarding his true identity that have been plausible, at least at face value, and I am more than willing to lead it to the knowledgeable experts to argue out their respective merits. But I was not reading "From Hell" to be convinced of the guilty or innocence of any one regarding the world's first infamous serial killer. I read it because as we have known ever since Alan Moore did his own take on the Swamp Thing, one of his greatest strengths as a writer is to make us look at old things in new ways.

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year and this book brings back fond memories of how I felt as a child. As an adult, the things children say about Christmas tend to make me get that warm, fuzzy feeling all over again. Just having these stories captured in a book from a real-life Santa Claus makes it even more special. This book is an exceptional holiday treat for the kid in all of us.

"Things Kids Say To Santa" is a fantastic visit into the fantasy world of childred (and adults). The book taps into fond memories of a childhood that went by too fast. Some of my happiest moments as a child were when "The Real Santa" visited our home. The book recaptures the spirit and feelings of those good old days of innocent awe.

When Bertensson and Leyda's 1956 biography appeared, it lifted the veil of secrecy from several areas of of the intensely private Sergei Rachmaninoff's (1873-1943) life, especially concerning the genesis of his compositions and how their critical reception affected him. David Cannata's new introduction summarizes what has happened in Rachmaninoff scholarship since the book was first published.

I found this book extremely helpful and a joy to read. I have used it as a resource for a Rachmaninoff class that i am creating and also for my own pleasure. It spans through Rachmaninoff's life, going in-depth to look at glimpses of Rachmaninoff's life with family, and then meticulously explores his music career. It looks into what inspired him, his meetings with other famous composers, his performances, and includes many letters about his personal life that he wrote to his family and friends. Overall, an excellent look into the life of a composer about whom we do not know much.

                        5 out of 5 stars A must-have for any Rachmaninoff lover........2001-11-28

This book is very thouroughly written, drawing on resources of Rachmaninoff's relatives, letters that Rachmaninoff himself wrote, and of personal interactions. It gives a glimpse into Rachmaninoff's private life, which very little is known about, and shows Rachmaninoff for the true musical genius that he is.

                        Book Description

Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett wrote the screenplays for some of America’s most treasured movies, including It’s a Wonderful Life, The Thin Man, Easter Parade, Father of the Bride, Naughty Marietta, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Legendary films, indeed, but writing both the play and screenplay for The Diary of Anne Frank was their crowning achievement.

Controlled chaos best describes their writing method. They discussed a scene at length, sometimes acting it out. Afterwards, they each wrote a draft, which they exchanged. “Then,” Frances said, “began ‘free criticism’—which sometimes erupted into screaming matches.” Noisy and contentious, the method worked splendidly.

Enormously successful and remarkably prolific, Goodrich and Hackett began their thirty-four-year collaboration in 1928. Married after the first of their five plays became a hit, they were in many ways an unlikely pair. Frances, the privileged daughter of well-to-do parents, graduated from Vassar, then played minor parts on Broadway. Albert’s mother put him on stage at age five, when his father died, to help pay the bills, and he became a highly paid comedian.

The Hacketts were known for their wit and high spirits and the pleasure of their Bel Air dinner parties. They waged memorable battles with their powerful bosses and were key activists in the stressful creation of the Screen Writers Guild. Once they had created Nick and Nora Charles, The Thin Man’s bright, charming, sophisticated lead couple, played memorably by William Powell and Myrna Loy, many people saw a strong resemblance, and the Hacketts acknowledged that they “put themselves into” Nick and Nora.

The Real Nick and Nora is a dazzling assemblage of anecdotes featuring some of the most talented writers and the brightest lights of American stage and screen. The work was arduous, the parties luminous. On any given night the guests singing and acting out scripts at a party might include F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sheilah Graham, S. J. Perelman, Oscar Levant, Ogden Nash, Judy Garland, Abe Burrows, Hoagy Carmichael, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Pat O’Brien, Dick Powell and June Allyson, Dashiell Hammett, Lillian Hellman, James Cagney, and Dorothy Parker.

5 out of 5 stars Nutley NJ's most famous writer.......2005-03-28

In ''The Real Nick and Nora - Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Writers of Stage and Screen Classics,'' author and Frances' nephew David L. Goodrich puts together a comprehensive and delightful portrait of his aunt and her husband and writing partner Albert Hackett.

The first play Frances and Albert worked on was something she had struggled on for a while and brought him in to finish off. A few years later, that play, ''Up Pops The Devil,'' was the first play produced by the Nutley Little Theatre on Nov. 23, 1934.

"The Real Nick and Nora" is filled with references to Nutley, N.J., and Frances' Nutley Avenue home. One photo in the front of the book shows ''Frances, in her teens, in the Nutley house - as usual, with a book.''

Born in Belleville, the Goodrich family moved to Nutley when she was two years old. She attended private school while she lived in town, then went Passaic Collegiate School, and then on to Vasser.

After graduating in 1912, Frances went into the theatre. While working in the theater in Northampton, Mass., Frances met actor William Powell - who later turned up in the Thin Man films.

Well, a lot happens to Frances between college graduation and writing screenplays in Hollywood for the Thin Man films, and many others.

Author David Goodrich takes his time developing the cross-relations and early kindnesses that led to life-long friendships with, among others, James Cagney. (Albert Hackett gave the young actor a ride in Hollywood - rather than leave him to wait for a bus.)

Frances met Bob Ames and married him in the Nutley Avenue house in 1917. That lasted six years. She married again, and though the wedding made the social pages, it didn't last.

It was with Albert Hackett, an actor and writer, that Frances life clicked for the best. The pair wrote plays, got married, and went to the new world of Hollywood to write the words for actors to say in the 'Talkies'.

The Hacketts wrote screenplays and plays for the next 30 years. They are best known for their work on the three Thin Man films staring Myrna Loy and William Powell.

The Hacketts, as Goodrich calls them, were the epitome of Nick and Nora. Frances had the refined taste for the good life and had grown up in Nutley with attending servants. Albert was the wise-cracking uncle every one would hang around at parties.

While writing the screenplays in their Hollywood studio office, passersby would hear the pair screaming and yelling at each other. Then the Hacketts would break for lunch and be as civil and chatty to each other as possible while away from their keyboard.

At the 'writers' table' at MGM and in Hollywood's Golden Age, they forged friendships with Ogden Nash, Dashiell Hammett, Dorothy Parker, F. Scott Fitzgerald and many others.

Later, when the Hacketts were well known, they were instrumental in establishing the Screen Writers Guild - to ensure fair treatment of writers in Hollywood. They stood up to the bigwigs, including Louis B. Mayer.

And the pair worked on Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" but it wasn't a pleasant experience for even the seasoned Hollywood screenwriters.

The Hacketts' crowning achievement, and most-draining writing effort, was their work as playwrights on "The Diary of Anne Frank." For that work they won the Pulitzer Prize.

Frances, who never had any children, thought of Anne as hers. Albert predicted rightly, that whenever Frances was called upon to speak about the play, it would cause her to cry.

The exhaustive 300-plus pages of ''The Real Nick and Nora'' covers a pair of long, full lives, Frances died at 94, and Albert, ten years her junior, lived to be 95.

The Hacketts were such nice people, they often seemed out of place in the wilds of Hollywood in the 30s and 40s. Their kindness was often taken advantage of, but they were such nice people, who wouldn't want to be their friend?

The Hacketts certainly deserve the fine treatment in this comprehensive biography. They would be proud of the fine job their nephew did.

5 out of 5 stars You Love Movies? Must Read.......2002-02-01

One of the finest books on Hollywood in recent years. Through the biographical prism of one of the most engaging, accomplished and loved couples in American screen and stage writing history, Goodrich captures the excitement and tears of movie production. A must read for movie lovers, the stage struck, aspiring writers, lovers of the Thin Man series, It's a Wonderful Life, Anne Frankf and mid-century cultural studies.
