Amazing.......2007-08-28
I like to draw but always have trouble getting my sketches exactly looking life like. After doing the lessons in this book there's no stopping me. It is so easy to understand and the final results are amazing. Well done Lee Hammond I also bought the painting copy with excellent results as well.
Great book for beginners.......2007-02-21
I haven't drawn for about 10 years. I took a few art classes in high school but didn't practice much. This book helped me so much. I had never used grids before and they really helped me get the right proportions for my drawings. My first drawing was a huge improvement over my previous attempts. I wish there was a little more detail on taking your drawing to the final step with lifting out color. But overall I think this is a excellent book for beginners. i wish I had it when I was younger. I'm inspired to start drawing again.
Quick start, great results Good mix of word instruction to practical practice.......2007-01-12
I bought this for my daughter and my self secretly figuring if she didn't like it I would. My daughter is 10 and her dad is a very talented artist. She shows signs of his gift, so I wanted to spark her interest in drawing and her confidence. She had a bad experience with her first Art teacher in school this year who really made Art NOT FUN and caused her to doubt her inate abilites.
I looked at lots of different books and setteled on Lee Hamond Series to try. The other books in series that were similar to this had a heavier, boring feel too them. Lee's approach and drawings were more up beat and lively looking and feeling. There is a good amount of text, verbal instruction and discussion available to read if that is how you learn. There is also a lot of practice things and then a good amount of getting right to the good stuff drawing animals.
The other day my daughter picked this up without me knowing, so I don't really know how much she actually read about the drawing, but I do Know she went right to the good stuff choosing to by pass all the "drawing exercises" and started drawing a dog with Lee's methods. I found the incomplete drawing in the garbage by accident and was impressed. It was really good. better than some of the things I had seen her draw before. It was not complete by any means but it was starting to look really life like. Now the book worked for my daughter that way at this point in time. maybe someday she will want to go back and read some of the explinations or try some of the practice exercises and really WORK at improving her fundementals of Drawing. But for now she is enjoying useing the book like this. Great. it is fun and producing results that are motivating and interesting her in drawing more.
I could not be happier. I am excited as to where she may be able to go with these books and her talent. I feel without reservation I bought the right book and will buy more in this series for her in the future.
Looking forward to being snowed in........2006-11-10
The instructions in this book are so clearly and sequentially written that I am eager to begin. All I need is a snowy day to close out the demands of the world. At this point, I'm collecting photographs of my daughter's dog. She will be my first subject.

OCTOPUS KILLS.......2006-09-23
Takako Unabara is a nice cute kid who wouldn't hurt a fly and is always willing to talk things out using reason. But her reputation as a goody-two-shoes makes her a target of school bullies who torture her incessantly and call her "Tako", which means octopus in Japanese. One day, the bullies shove a live octopus down her throat, almost causing Takako to suffocate. Later that night, Takako awakens from a nightmare to find herself in a Kafkaesque situation. To her horror, she still has a human head but her body has transformed into that of an octopus! She soon sets out on her first murder spree, killing the bullies in some of the most disgusting manners you've ever seen! She soon learns that she can change back and forth between human and octopus forms at will so she can at least still keep some semblance of her old life, even though she is really a raving psychotic.
Octopus Girl is the most bizarre, disgusting, and insane manga I've ever read. But you know what? It's also very funny. I mean, for example, later in the book, Takako gets a friend and rival, Sakae Utsubo, who, due to a mad scientist's experiments, has a human head and the body of an eel. The two girls realize they're not alone and form a strong bond, even as they insult each other. The two dream of becoming pop idols and even of opening their own business as if they look totally normal! There are a tiny bit of serious moments in this volume, but mostly Yamazaki skewers society with humor and I was laughing a lot as I read this manga. If you're looking for something completely different and unique, check this manga out.
I would also suggest any of the Hino Horror graphic novels, which have a similar but inferior sense of humor.
kooky and oozy.......2006-09-08
Originally released in the mid 90s, Octopus girl is a different kind of J-horror manga. Combining horror and gore with comedy, the end result is something like Betty and Veronica meet Night of the Living Dead on the ocean floor. It is sometimes scary, sometimes silly, and always original.
Toru Yamazaki has made a splash in the Japanese media as a talk-show guest and singer. His art would lead one to envision a Rob Zombie type character, but his soft-spoken demeanor, and ambisexual fashion reveals more about the catty behavior of his female characters than about the buckets of blood and ooze that cover the pages of work. Unlike more traditional horror manga, Octopus girl is unique and more than a little weird. It's hard to compare with other manga, as there truly is nothing like it.
The "hero" of our collection of stories is Takako. Harassed by her classmates, she is forced to eat octopus, despite her allergy to them. Somehow, (a word you will use a lot when describing Octopus Girl stories), this turns Takako into Octopus Girl, basically a head attached to eight octopus tentacles. How she gets revenge on her classmates is funny as well as disgusting, and the even funnier part is the entire story is contained in only 15 pages. Most of the stories are about this length, and Octopus finds herself in many bizarre situations usually within a page or two of each chapter's beginning. The pace is fast and furious and Yamazaki introduces us to other far-out and freaky characters like Eel Girl and Granny Vamp. From singing contests to airplane crashes, Octopus Girl is all over the place. And when things go a little too far, the fourth wall is torn down as we see the reader's own hands going in to strangle the offending Takako. At times the stories do get a bit dippy, and the attempted strangulation is justified. Although Octopus Girl is technically horror, its very nature forces jumps to other genres as well. And even though Octopus Girl acts like a typical teenager, the language and imagery is definitely not for kids.
If you are looking for standard scares or ghost stories, Octopus Girl will not be what you are looking for. However, if you are fishing for some devilish fun and some kooky, oozy stories then Octopus Girl just may be the girl for you...just watch your back, and cover your nose and mouth!
Way Too Silly.......2006-07-13
Horror comics are not very easy to get right. They are very easy to get wrong. This one seems to have worked hard to be so wrong. This is a silly teen girl story (stories really) involving a rather dim-witted young girl. She is the target of bullies at school who call her octopus. Then one day she wakes up and finds out she really is an octopus. The story then starts well as she tries to exact revenge upon her tormenters.
But then the story goes really wrong. She discovers she can change between octopus and girl at will. This enables her to do things like enter a singing competition (oh, the horror!). Horror elements are brought in as window dressing to the stories but most of them (except maybe the babysitting one) are simply stories of a silly girl with more cuteness than brains. It takes more than continued scenes of vomiting to create horror. Sure, we get a vampire and an eel-girl not to mention plenty of blood, but there just isn't any actual horror.
The art work for the series is also less than spectacular. I knew I was in trouble with one of the first scenes. Octopus is made to vomit up the vegetables she ate earlier that day. They are forced out when one of the bullies jumps on her stomach. We get a scene that looks like maggots are crawling out of her mouth and nose. Didn't look like vegetables at all. Also later we get a lot of snot shooting out of noses for no particular reason. This one had a chance to go write but it went in entirely the wrong direction. But if you want a sill comic that seems aimed at young kids, you might want to check this out but I doubt it.

Although the book has no age limit, it's best suited for sophisticated teenagers or people that appear to be breathing. With that we shall move forward with this foreword or maybe forward with this forBill and forget Ward.
