Elmer Bischoff (1916-1991) is generally regarded as one of the leaders among the artists in the San Francisco Bay Area who, after contributing to the local emergence of Abstract Expressionism during the 1940s and 50s, shifted the terms of their spectacularly sensuous brushwork to recognizable imagery. Bill Berkson writes that if "David Park was the classicist of the founding triad of the Bay Area Figurative painters, and Richard Diebenkorn the modernist, Bischoff was the romantic." Designed to accompany a major retrospective of Bischoff's work, this superb volume is lavishly illustrated with duotones and color plates that faithfully capture the subtle variations in shade that characterize the painter's oeuvre. Berkson and Susan Landauer, both of whom knew Bischoff, provide the definitive view of the life, art, and teaching career of this important artist.
Native to the Bay Area, Bischoff studied at the University of California under the "Berkeley School" modernists Worth Ryder, Erle Loran, and Margaret Peterson. His experience during World War II profoundly affected his view of the world and his place in it. In 1946, Bischoff joined the faculty of the California School of Fine Arts where--with colleagues Edward Corbett, Richard Diebenkorn, Claire Falkenstein, David Park, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Hassel Smith, and Clyfford Still--he found himself at the hub of avant-garde expression in the Bay Area. Throughout his career, Bischoff applied his visual intelligence and unusual personal integrity in creating a uniquely varied body of work that invites our investigation.
Having interviewed many of the artist's surviving colleagues and family members, Landauer offers valuable primary documentation on Bischoff, the Bay Area Figurative School, and the cultural history of the Northern California art scene. Her lively text is supported with insightful research into the social and political background of the period. She considers Bischoff's career in relation to the European artists who influenced him, his interactions with his local contemporaries, and his reactions to the New York art scene. A useful chronology of the artist's life, a bibliography, and documentary photographs that Landauer uncovered during her research make this volume an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the artistic vision of Elmer Bischoff.

Ard examines the problem of democratic transitions by focusing on Mexico's National Action Party (PAN), a democratic opposition party based on Catholic social doctrine. The 2000 defeat of Mexico's long-time ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party was more than the displacement of one ruling clique by another. More profoundly, Fox's stunning victory closed the book on a persistent political-religious conflict--a "great party" conflict--that had dogged Mexico since its break with the Spanish Empire. The 2000 election represented the end of a long conversion process, a reconciliation between Mexico's Catholic and Revolutionary political traditions, and the forging of a new national political consensus. Ard examines Mexico's long transition to democracy in which the PAN, an opposition "system party" inspired by Catholic social doctrine and dedicated to democratic values, played a vital role. The book begins with a theoretical framework to understanding the Mexican transition, with an emphasis placed on the importance of conciliation, political liberties, and the democratic opposition party. Ard then addresses the fundamental church-state cleavage and how it shaped Mexico's great parties. He then looks at the founding of the National Action Party, a reforming "system" party that broke the "great party" mold. The bulk of his analysis centers on the details of the political transition and the challenges ahead for Mexican democracy. This book is of particular importance to scholars, students, and researchers involved with Mexican politics and history, and Latin American Studies in general.

journey back to mexico.......2000-06-26

Robert Frerck's book Eternal Mexico covered the vast country from the barren desert to the lush carribean. He has taken time out to get the perfect photograph. He did not bombard the book like other authors/photographers with pictures of the many ruins that mexico has to offer. Instead he included many photographs of the majestic side of the Mexican people and their culture. The true Mexico. His photographs of the famous places are not those sold on the counters of "tourist shops" and on postcards. Robert has managed to capture a different side to these famous places that many of the other books/ photographers have failed at. I have only one regret that the book was not larger with more photographs. It was good to sit down with and reminisce over my travels in Mexico.

This is a fabulous coffee table book makes a great gift for any nature lover. David Muench does a wonderful job of capturing the desert & bringing home for you to enjoy.It is in stunning full-color on glossy stock.

Photographs encompass landscapes of endless sands & rocks of many different hues. Impressive natural sandstone sculptures are also displayed. You even get a glimpse of the petroglyphs & ruins of ancient peoples.

I fell in love with a spectacular waterfall flowing into most gorgeous turquoise waters I have ever seen. Meadows of golden prickly pear cactus flowers & fields of brilliant orange poppies took my breath away.

Excellent book!.......2007-04-02

This is a great book, especially for the guitarists who have done their homework on scales-arpeggios and look for a way to start bulding jazz vocabulary with that material. The book grabs you from the start; the introduction section named "The Craft" gives you very practical and musical ways to embellish your typical triads and diatonic scales with chromatic and diatonic passing tones. For the hardworking player, these a few pages provide tons of practical material to be applied to scales and triads and you can start sounding jazzy right away, this part alone is worth the price and that is just the beginning! Beware that this book does not include beginner level information though, so you should know your major and melodic minor scales and basic triads to get the most out of this material. The book continues to present typical bebop language "idioms" on different chord types and they sound very musical. These are not some hot licks invented by the author, they are definitely classical bebop ideas that are in every good jazz musician's arsenal. You will find all your favorite licks in there! Plus, Jacobs provides tablature as well and and his ideas suit very naturally to guitar fingerboard.
After the bebop oriented section (it lasts about 50 pages and if you can assimilate all the ideas in there, you are on your well on your way to start improvising in jazz language), Jacobs moves onto more modern sounds, such as applying pentatonic scales and fourths to produce modern and "outside" ideas. The third section adresses symmetrical scales including the augmented, whole-tone and diminished scales. In these sections Jacobs provide theoretical explanation as well (unlike the first section where you are expected to know and understand theory fundamentals, but Jacobs' other books adresses these issues as well, so you might want to check them out) and the fingerings he provides are extremely practical to get you started playing those unusual scales. Finally he addresses polychords at the end of the book. The book definitely delivers what its title promises, so what you see is what you get. If you have been loooking for a guitar oriented book to start playing the jazz language right away, this is what you have been looking for.

I have dozens of books on jazz guitar. Method books. Books of licks. This is the best one I've found. Includes dozens of simple concepts that can be easily digested and incorporated into your playing. Highly recommended.

Sex. That's the main event, whether you're reading this book or just living life. It's the one subject that fascinates us all. This drama is about the people and the absurd situations that pervade porn, specifically seen through the year Taylor Marsh spent as editor in chief, then managing editor of a neophyte entrepreneurial Internet company, Danni's Hard Drive, which is run by the "Most Downloaded Woman in Internet History" (according to the Guinness Book of World Records).

The story that will unfold is partly about Danni Ashe, a woman who started off as a stripper, but who eventually landed on the World Wide Web, leaving her very first job behind to take on her second job, president and head porn Diva of her own multi-million dollar Internet and video smut company. On the other side of the story sits a strong, authority bucking activist writer who, while accomplishing a lot for her boss, would ultimately become the sequin studded g-string that cut just a little too tight up Danni's derriere.

It's about an industrious former stripper who created and founded the "number one subscription site on the Web," and the gal that she hired to assemble a creative and technical team, recreate and reorganize her content, as well as perform the tasks of managing editor at what was undoubtedly the first and most critical "strategic inflection point" in her company's history. Coined by Intel Chairman, Andrew Grove, it is basically a point in corporate time when something radical impedes a business's standard way of operating so that a fundamental change in procedures must be implemented in order for the company to continue to prosper.

In July 1997, Danni's Hard Drive was going through a strategic inflection point, turning the business away from ad hoc amateur practices, and into a serious money making machine. Danni's contract with the people who provided all of her pictorial and written content, The Score Group, was about to end. When it did, The Score Group was coming on line and about to become her number one competitor. If Danni didn't make it through this critical corporate juncture the future of her company was in serious jeopardy. To say that Taylor was unprepared for the combustible atmosphere at Danni's Hard Drive is a profound understatement.

Debating the realities and opportunities of executive female pornographers, which used to be a non-starter due to the fact that females could only be employed as porn performers, the Internet seemed a perfect place to set up shop as an editor. Watching the new world of gal-driven pornography unfold online, while continuing to accumulate further research regarding the sexual habits of humans, which is actually what Taylor does. Ultimately, Taylor was curious how the Divas of Porn navigated a newly emancipated porn world, even if they didn't call themselves feminists. Because as Taylor sees it, without women's rights these gals would still be relegated to the video set bedroom, the porn boardroom still designated for guys only.

There is also the issue of what constitutes appropriate erotic content, written and photographic, which is particular critical in pornography and especially important on an e-commerce smut site. No other medium offers such immediate access to pornography through anonymous, unknown and unmonitored means, allowing the curious voyeur, regardless of age, to access porn if they but try. So, effective Internet blocking software is important, but not nearly as crucial as a parent's involvement in their child's online activities. Especially since once an adolescent or young teen finds an adult site the homepage is often very innocuous. Oftentimes all they have to do is click on the statement that reads, "I am over eighteen," and "I am not offended by nudity," and presto, he or she is treated to an explosion of adult content free of charge, which is meant to tease surfers into becoming subscribers. This free content can include XXX-rated sexually graphic advertising banners, full n! udes and topless porn stars.

It's astounding to think of the mounds of money that continually came in during Taylor Marsh's fourteen months at Danni's Hard Drive. But she was completely naïve when it came to the business of pornography, having never been associated with porn in her life, though the sexual and political world of adults is her professional playground. Taylor's conclusions are many, but one in particular rests uncomfortably with her. Whether speaking of Alfred Kinsey, Hugh Hefner or Larry Flynt, and regardless of whether you approve, agree or can stomach their products; along with their capitalistic ambitions, these men also had political passions, purpose and philosophies that each of them believed in and staked their lives on. Mr. Kinsey was brave enough to turn his research towards women at a time when we weren't allowed to speak openly about our sexuality, and whether you agree with his methods or not, he believed that bringing feminine sexuality into the American conversation was philosophically important. Mr. Hefner braved the suburban standards of the 1950s by daring to suggest that men could create a different kind of life for themselves outside the traditions of Puritanical America, and in the process help spark a revolution. Mr. Flynt, as outrageous a pornographer as you are likely to find, was willing to go to! jail for his first amendment beliefs. The current generation of techno smut peddler hasn't the conscience, the heart or the soul of any of their political and philosophically oriented predecessors.

The Internet invites us all to become covert peepers, seducing us with the carnal carnival that is breeding online. It's a vast, ever expanding arena. Peddling porn online is evidently not unlike working with a very large beast, and it didn't take Taylor Marsh long to learn that to satisfy the brute and its paying customers you would have to become enslaved.

Hot non-fiction.......2001-02-26

If you've ever thought about working in the porn industry, even as someone behind the video camera, photo lens or website, this book gives you a good idea of what you are in for. Take a curious, brave and intelligent woman and thow her together with a very industrious former stripper with excellent business sense and you'll see the sparks fly between this odd couple in this surprisingly suspenseful non-fiction story.
