Fantastic.......2007-01-08
This is a wonderful book for anyone who would like to experience Klimt. I found it very inspirational and completed several study sketches using this book.
The simplistic beauty of a continual line.......2002-10-08
Gustav Klimt is amazing. I love his work and I have most recently become more intrigued by his ideas and sketches. If you like Klimt, check out Auguste Rodin, and Egon Schiele also. They all have similar sketch stylizes and imagery. I am an art major and I specialize in painting portraits, so Klimt's sketches are a natural way for me to go. I love his work so I loved this book but as another reviewer stated, the images were too light. The drawings were awfully faint and on gray paper, I would have liked them to be printed darker or at least on white paper. Also there were a lot of his major sketches for his masterpieces missing that I've found in other books. Over all it's a very good book for a nice price.
ga ga for gustav.......2001-11-11
this is an amazing book! as an amateur graphic artist, this has been an invaluable reference and inspiration to me. all of the drawings are of figures, mostly women, mostly naked. they were largely done without direction to his models while they lounged around his loft so they are very intimate, sensual, and sometimes erotic.
his style is so lucid, i can stare at the images forever. the line is so smooth and light(usually pencil, sometimes charcoal), that the images seem like stencils. the body is basically a contour drawing and then the hair is captured in typical art nouveau style, with stylized strands moving in one direction.
i can't say enough about this book. the work is so simple and stunning...when i try to relate what it means to me, i can't think of a thing to say.

A Great View of Klimt's Intuition.......2000-11-15
These 100 drawings are essential for any student of Klimt's work. Given that many times it is this stage of his work that is under-represented in books on his art, this book is advantageous. I've been looking at Klimt for years, and many times I've marveled at his intuitive, initial marks; they are records of a man obsessed with obervational drawing. The drawings in this book, rarely seen, are great examples of the first and most direct marks he would use and they attest to his amazing skill. They shed light on the finished works while standing nicely on their own. Even though the works shown here represent only a minute fraction of his drawings (thousands littered his studios at any given time), these particular pieces provide a unique view of this controversial artist. A good purchase.

Book Description
The story of General Benedict Arnold's defection to the British in September of 1780 has never been presented in this way. “Brilliantly conceived and thoroughly researched book. A fascinating new look at one of history’s most infamous men. You-are-there feel of a novel. Thought-provoking, intriguing and historically important, Eye of the Eagle will truly open your eyes”. New York Times best-selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh
Customer Reviews:
Great reading.......2007-07-29
I very good book that gives the reader an interesting twist on what was believed to be gospel. The author's research is convincing.
awesome .......2007-04-20
An awesome book....definitely a different view .... a must read for anyone seeking to truely understand Benedict Arnold's story.
A Novel Approach to History.......2007-04-19
Who would have thought that what was assumed by the average student of American history to be an open and shut case against Benedict Arnold could be brought into question. And, furthermore, to do so with such detailed facts woven into a rather gripping novel format. Mr. WIlczak has laid out a compelling case that Arnold was not a traitor but a collaborator with George Washington to ultimately fool the British. This book could be the basis of an excellent movie.
Finally a different view!.......2007-04-13
This book expresses a thoroughly researched, fresh approach to one of history's most infamous legends. When I began to read the book I felt my feelings regarding Benedict Arnold could not be swayed. The author, however, through meticulous use of timeline, documented fact, and letters of many of the involved, opened my eyes to the possibility that Arnold may have been the protaganist in a great scheme to free the colonies and help create the United States. I highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks the truth instead of the commonly handed down history stories we have been fed since childhood. AAAAA+++++
AMAZING FACT FILLED BOOK.......2007-03-27
Well written and amazing to read. Author captured the moment and took you there. Book was flooded with facts.
I would highly recommend this book, it is not only for the history buffs.
If you do enjoy history, you will love the author's details.

Book Description
Veteran of Queen Victoria's wars and recent immigrant to America, Abel Jones believed he had left his days in uniform behind. Now, firmly rooted on the shores of his adopted land-where American has taken up arms against American in this most terrible of conflicts-he has signed on as a confidential agent to General George McClellan, the man touted as the savior of the Union. Within hours Jones finds himself in a dark and unexpected world, where questions lead not to answers, but to other deaths
Set against the backdrop of battles and bordellos, of the intrigues of war-time Washington and the elegant mansions of old Philadelphia, FADED COAT OF BLUE reaches behind the myths and heroics to paint a ravishing, disturbing and deeply moving portrait of the United States in the midst of our harshest trial. A determinedly moral man in a troubled age, Abel Jones triggers a drama involving greedy immigrants and impassioned patriots, vicious politicians and the greatest president the country has ever known. His investigation draws him into a web of sinister relationships that reveals a hidden side to Fowler's life and a shocking secret the youth may have died for. As a nation begins its long march into war-and as President Lincoln agonizes over the coming carnage-Abel Jones discovers that good and evil are easily intertwined, while heroes may be betrayed by those who cherished them the most.
Vividly told, rich in history and compelling authentic detail, Faded Coat of Blue is a riveting tale of crime and punishment set amid the blood and tumult of the American Civil War; a startlingly original work of fiction that introduces Abel Jones, a most unusual crime-solver, a true American hero, and a keen observer of a world on fire.
Customer Reviews:
Good start to the series.......2007-10-04
His latter books are much better, but this is a good start to the series. The main characters are strong and he captures the historical atmosphere very well
Just Love This Detective.......2006-12-14
Great, great character - just love this detective - mystery, mood, setting great too. Enjoy!
Faded Coat of Blue.......2006-12-04
I thoroughly enjoyed Abel Jones'adventures. Mr Parry has brought the era of the Civil War directly into our homes with his wonderful book. The narrative voice of Abel Jones in the storytelling is refreshing.
A Mystery Set in a Hauntingly-Real Setting of the Civil War.......2006-10-11
This is not one of your usual mysteries. For this, you travel back in time to the first autumn of the Civil War, and the author's magnificent style puts you right into the sights and sounds and smells of the time. The protagonist, Captain Abel Jones of the US Army, tells the story in words that go nearly 150 years back down the corridor of time. He was wounded in the First Battle of Bull Run, and he describes his combat with bloodcurdling realism. Now, limping and confined to a desk job, he is ordered by no less than General McClellan to investigate the death of a young officer who was a poster-boy for the abolitionist cause. Jones quickly discovers that the death was a murder, and we are off to solve the mystery. The plot is fairly simple, but that does not matter. The strong point is the feeling you get of being right there in that long ago time, so different from today. The plot and the style wrap together to give a truly enjoyable mystery.
The first installment in my favorite mystery series.......2006-05-25
"Faded Coat of Blue" is the first novel by Ralph Peters, writing under the pen name of Owen Parry, in a series of books featuring Abel Jones, a Welsh immigrant to the United States caught up in the civil war and tasked to serve as a special investigative agent by President Lincoln.
Ralph Peters is an excellent writer with many wonderful books published under his own name (do yourself a favor and find a copy of The War in 2020), but he has surpassed himself with this series. I feel I cannot do justice to the excellence of these novels with my meagre command of the English language. This is by far my favorite series of mystery books, which means I am placing these novels ahead of the works of Dennis Lehane, James Lee Burke, Lee Child and so many other ferociously talented writers. I hate having to add the adjectival qualification "mystery" when proclaiming this my favorite, but Colleen McCullough's Rome remain the best series I have ever read. Despite that forced admission I can honestly say that outside of that one reservation, these are some of the finest books I have ever read and they simply excel on every level.
These are not mystery novels so much as they are literature which happens to be built on a mystery and historical fiction chassis. The characterization is the best I've ever seen, the setting, story, and plot are executed with mastery, and even those who think they know the civil war are going to get a doctoral education that is as stunning as it is revelatory. The author accomplishes something in these novels which I have never seen executed nearly as well anywhere else: he knocks you out of your comfortable 21st century mindset and prejudices and forces you to deal with the events and period of this novel as experienced through the lens of the mindset and prejudices of those who lived then. Many times a great writer will sweep you away and transport you to another time and place....but I don't think I ever seen it done better than in these novels. The ways the characters think, speak, react, process information, their values, their beliefs, their insecurities, their assumptions are all as thoroughly 19th century as it is possible to be. It's just shockingly well done.
This book, and the entire series comes with my unreserved recommendation. This first one, Faded Coat of Blue, is in my opinion a little more difficult than the ones that follow because it does take a few days to adjust your own perspectives enough that you can relax and understand that this book is abolsutely true to it's period on even an unconscious level. Once you've made the mental transition and realize that you have been authentically transported to another time and place there is very little quite so enjoyable as these novels.
I buy this book regularly as a gift to others to expose them to the beginning of this wonderful series. Everyone invariably goes on to purchase the rest of the books and become fans that are just as impressed and rabid as I am. Do yourself a favor and get this book as soon as possible. It will rank as one of the better things you will ever read in your life.

Book Description
By the late 1700s, half the free population of Saint Domingue was black. The French Caribbean colony offered a high degree of social, economic, and physical mobility to free people of color. Covering the period 1776-1791, this study offers the most comprehensive portrait to date of Saint Domingue's free black elites on the eve of its transformation into the republic of Haiti.
Stewart R. King identifies two distinctive groups that shared the colony's free black upper stratum, one consisting of planters and merchants and the other of members of the army and police forces. With the aid of individual and family case studies, King documents how the two groups used different strategies to pursue the common goal of economic and social advancement. Among other aspects, King looks at the rural or urban bases of these groups' networks, their relationships with whites and free blacks of lesser means, and their attitudes toward the acquisition, use, and sale of land, slaves, and other property.
King's main source is the notarial archives of Saint Domingue, whose holdings offer an especially rich glimpse of free black elite life. Because elites were keenly aware of how a bureaucratic paper trail could help cement their status, the archives divulge a wealth of details on personal and public matters.
Blue Coat or Powdered Wig is a vivid portrayal of race relations far from the European centers of colonial power, where the interactions of free blacks and whites were governed as much by practicalities and shared concerns as by the law.

A novel of the men with George Armstrong Custer, and the Battle of The Big Horn
Customer Reviews:
Dramis' book reads like watching a movie.......2007-08-26
Dramis writes a short, spirited book that ends with Custer's Last Stand. Reading more like a screenplay than a novel, the pages turn quickly as we follow Jerome Phillips who starts as a young man riding for the Pony Express, spying for the North in the Civil War, and then joining up with Custer in the West as a scout.

Customer Reviews:
an overlooked classic.......2002-08-20
This book is a masterpiece. Zinnser delivers what is perhaps the archetypical story of the development of serious American artists. Zinnser is one of the most talented and overlooked writers, and he tells the story of Mitchell and Ruff with humor, clarity, and intelligence. If most books about jazz and jazz musicians were this good, we'd have a whole subset of profound literature based on the music, but unfortunately, Zinnser's book is a rare gem. Dwike Mitchell and Willie Ruff couldn't have hoped for a better writer, nor Zinnser for a better subject.
Willie, Dwike and Zinsser.......2002-06-02
I am a big fan of Zinsser and the child of a big band sax man so had to read Willie and Dwike. Willie and Dwike (the earlier, out -of -print edition of this book) is the life stories of two amazing and brilliant musicians and the author who shadows them as they travel to foreign countries and small towns across the U.S. Throughout, Zinsser conveys the great minds, quiet dignity and incredible musicianship of these men so dedicated to their art - the art of jazz. It is a delightful read! A must read if you love jazz and good writing.
Not Just for Jazz Fans.......2002-02-11
Get this book! Zinsser is a fabulous writer. You will be moved and enthralled by the story of these gifted and dedicated men. The author's description of Ruff explaining the concept of musical improvisation to a Chinese audience is unforgetable.
I think this is a re-issue of Willie & Dwyke (1984), now out of print.
