Book Description
The female pharaoh Hatshepsut reigned for nearly twenty years during Egypt’s early New Kingdom in the fifteenth century B.C. First acting as regent for her young nephew/stepson Thutmose III, she in time assumed the title of king and exercised the full powers of the throne as senior co-ruler. In accordance with Egyptian tradition, Hatshepsut was often depicted as a male king. After her death, however, monuments bearing her image were ruthlessly defaced, and her name was erased from historical accounts.
Hatshepsut’s rise to power and the nature of her kingship have long been debated by scholars. This fascinating period, one of immense artistic creativity, is illuminated by this volume’s rich presentation of monumental royal sculpture and reliefs, ceremonial objects, exquisite personal items for everyday use, and dazzling jewelry. Essays focus on influences from the neighboring Near East, Nubia, and the Aegean; the innovative architecture built by Hatshepsut; powerful figures in the royal court during her reign; archaeological finds from this period; and mysteries surrounding the destruction of Hatshepsut’s statues and the obliteration of her name.
The first in-depth treatment of the subject, From Queen to Pharoah is an important investigation into the impact of Hatshepsut’s reign on the history, culture, and artistic output of Egypt.
Customer Reviews:
Magnificent collection of essays and photographs........2006-05-30
This is one of the best books that I've seen on the art, symbolism and life in Ancient Egypt. Set within the reign of Hatshepsut, a royal wife and queen who transformed herself into Pharaoh, it looks at the lives of royal women from the images and personal artifacts that have been left behind.
Each chapter takes a look at aspects of Hatshepsut's reign and life, as well as the architect Senenmut, who may or may not have been her lover, but was also her most trust confidant -- and to whom she turned the education and care of her daughter, Neferure. One section that was of particular interest to me were the displays of women's lives and those of children, a topic that usually gets overlooked. There are exquisite pieces of jewelry, goldwork and tiny statues -- one of a small child, no longer than a pinkie finger, and holding an unbloomed lotus blossom, was particularly poignant. Along with precious objects there were also everyday items from mirrors, toiletry objects, small jars used to hold cosmetics and oils, to boxes and games, and several very fragile pieces of furniture of exquisite craftsmanship. All of these are shown in the catalog, each one with a detailed description and what it was meant to be used for.
Another aspect that I really enjoyed was how Hatshepsut changed the artistic styles that were in use in Egypt, and how it influenced later depictions of rulers. Icongraphy that shows her wearing male attire, false beard and holding symbols of regal authority are throughout, as well as the unusual temple that she designed and built at Deir El-Bahri where she intended to be worshipped and remembered throughout eternity.
The essays are clear and managed to be free of most jargon which would drive away most armchair archaelogists and non-specialists. The book is laid out in beautiful detail and design, giving plenty of room for the reader to savor each object and the type and layout in a pleasing format. Despite the hefty cost at 45$US for the paperback, and 65$US for the hardback editions, it is well worth the price.
In short, if you can't get to one of the locations where this exhibition is showing, this massive and exquisitely produced catalog is the next best thing. The photographs and drawings are very crisp and clear, the writing is informative, there are extensive notes and it provides a lovely experience for anyone interested in the power of women in the ancient world, or Egypt at the height of power and conquest.
For those who are interested in such things, this exhibition was shown in San Francisco in late 2005/early 2006, will continue at the Met until August 2006, and will continue on to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas from 24 August to 31 December 2006. I do suggest that if you can, do try to see this. It's worth it.
Highly Recommended.
Catalog of the Exhibit Regarding a most unusual woman.......2006-04-12
Think of early Egypt and you think of King Tut and Cleopatra. Those two, however, are not the sum total of Egyptian history. This book is basically a catalog of the collection regarding Hatshepsut a most interesting woman. She was the daughter of a king, and was married to her half brother. Upon his death the kingship transferred to his son by a secondary wife with Hatshepsut as regent for her nephew. Later she became co-ruler and king in her own right. Got all that?
The collection, made over many years included numerous pieces that were deliberately smashed about twenty years after her death. Because such fragments were not of value they waited until recent times when they were patiently assembled into the statues that they are today. In addition the collection contains hundreds of objects produced during her reign. The items are described by some twenty-five noted Egyptologists in addition to the three authors.
The book is of large format and profusely illustrated with perhaps 400 pictures, about half of which are in color. This book will remain after the exhibit is gone.
The Mysteries and Secrets of Ancient Egypt Continue to Emerge.......2006-03-30
Once again the Metropolitan Museum has enriched the history and art of Egypt books with the publication of this very impressive catalogue that accompanies the exhibition 'Hatshepsut : From Queen to Pharaoh'. While many other museum exhibitions have been inundated with people attending the King Tut behemoths, this exhibition focuses on Hatshepsut, daughter of King Thutmose I, and wife and half-sister of King Thutmose II, who in the mid-15th century BC gradually acquired kingly status and power for herself. Her reign was twenty years in length as a woman pharaoh.
The catalogue that accompanies this traveling exhibition is beautifully designed and is full of extant drawings and objects that demonstrate her influence on history, culture, monumental art, and architecture of the late 17th and early 18th Dynasties. The writing is of the highest order and divides the book into "Setting the Scene," "Hatshepsut and Her Court," "Hatshepsut's Building Projects," "Decorative Arts," "The Proscription," and "The Aftermath." In addition to the written information, the catalogue has superb reproductions of jewelry, pottery, furniture, reliefs, and statuary. Then, sadly, the writing includes detailed descriptions of the demolition and desecration of the important monuments from Hatshepsut's reign.
Here is a moment in history brought to life by a group of fine curators and writers, suggesting that as much as we think we know about the past, there are always surprises to be brought to our attention by the museums of the world. A fine book, this. Grady Harp, March 06

Gertrude Jekyll's Colour Schemes.......2002-07-31
As an Engish Gardener "displaced in Kansas" this book was a delight. Anyone who wants to plan a garden large or small should turn to this little gem written over 80 years ago. Miss Jekyll was the definitive garden planner, her ideas of colours and seasonal planting will inspire you to create a beautiful garden of your own. Quite the best of her kind.

Customer Reviews:
This is the worst book I've ever read........2003-04-09
I don't think I'm going to make it. I'm on the 'Humor' chapter, which begins, 'Humor is a funny thing...'
Are you kidding me? Most of this stuff doesn't deserve to be called an essay, let alone be published and distributed. From the back of the book: ...takes your emotions on a roller coaster ride of short stories and anecdotes...people really are alike...laugh out loud?...a gift to everyone who is tired of the anxious, misbegotten choruses that flood bookstores.
Who are these people? This guy writes like Andy Rooney without the charm or sophistication. Does Mr. Lazzarini believe he deserves kudos for fathering a child and then seeing her once a year? It's as if he never read anything himself and then decided one day that his unique view on the world needed to be unleashed. If you're going to call a chapter, "GOD", then at least put some meat into it. These are musings that someone may have before they've shaken off a good deep sleep, slammed a cup of coffee and taken a poop (sorry, I'm censoring myself already). After the poop, you should be able to think clearly. Can anyone imagine what the meetings regarding this garbage were like?
"Love the chapter on God Tony, good deep stuff, and so succinct."
"Great, glad you like it. Wait until I send over the 'chapter' on Government. We're gonna change the world!"
If anything, this book has given me hope that one day I can read my own drivel in print. I could probably write an entire disertation on why this book is garbage that would be longer than the book itself, but I have writing exercises to do, and I think we've all suffered enough.
A simply wonderful book !.......2000-01-22
Each story took me from one emotion to another. One minute I found myself bursting out loud with laugher and a few pages later I was on the edge of my seat gripped with anticipation. This book is from the heart and I loved it. What a refreshing experience !
Attention English Teachers!.......1999-05-28
Here's a book that will inspire your kids to set down their own ideas and feelings. Mr. Lazzarini still expresses their kind of innocence and idealism, even though he's a real grownup. In this collection he covers a broad range of emotions, from the deep horror of being in the very, whirling, center of combat in Vietnam, to the anguish of separation from one you love, to wistful longing for things lost, to an insanely comic flight of fantasy involving a set of magnets and a tie. His direct, unpretentious writing left me with pictures so vivid that I can see each scene in all its detail just by recalling the subject. It reminds me of Dashiell Hammett's ability to photograph the action in words. This book is too short. Send us more, Tony.
Almost what the doctor ordered.......1999-01-24
This book is not as witty, funny or meaningful as I thought and hoped it would be. There are a few good one-liners, but over all the book is not good. I was hoping for something along the lines of a Robert Fulghum collection, but these essays fall hopelessly short. Knowing people have purchased (and enjoyed) this book, almost makes me want to publish a collection myself.
A wonderful book filled with lifes humor and ironies........1998-08-16
The authors experiences, observations, and hearty zest for life, are reflected in this collection of humorous, thought prevoking short stories. Profound whimsy at its best. A treasure to be read again and again.

If there's a sports tale ripe for the telling, it's George Steinbrenner's stewardship of the Yankees. But where to center? On the tumult, the terror, the absurdity, or the glory? In All Roads Lead to October, Maury Allen refracts the broad spectrum. Wandering genially from story to story and era to era, he scatters anecdotes and observations like a spray hitter in a book that reads like a long evening on a barstool beside an old sportswriter (which he is). He may stray at times, but he never gets lost.
Still, it's hard to go too off the track given the situations that have arisen and the personalities that have revolved through Steinbrenner's stormy tenure. Writers can't make up stuff like pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson trading families, Reggie Jackson proving "the magnitude of me" with his bat, the zaniness surrounding Billy Martin's hirings and firings, the humiliation of Dave Winfield, the exile of Yogi Berra, the sentimental melodrama of Joe Torre, and Darryl Strawberry's bottomless second chance. Well-covered stuff? Sure. But Allen's not shy about inflicting his personal prejudices and assessments on them--they give old stuff new spin.
Of course, even in that Bronx Zoo, there's no animal quite like Steinbrenner himself. With insights finely tuned over time, Allen paints the Boss with brush strokes nuanced enough to capture the complexities and contradictions Steinbrenner wallows in--is anyone else in sports so fascinatingly arrogant, egotistical, unbridled, passionate, terrifying, astute, silly, sappy, able, and goodhearted all in one? Allen doesn't think so, which isn't surprising. What is is his ultimate appraisal: "Imagine," Allen submits, "the Boss as a Cooperstown bust." Given the record, it's really not that big a stretch. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
In 1973, a former football coach and heir to a shipbuilding fortune purchased the New York Yankees baseball team, the most hallowed, tradition-laden team in baseball. For the next three decades brash George Steinbrenner and the Yankees have grabbed headlines, signed superstars, gotten into fights, changed managers, won games and lost games, as Steinbrenner slowly became an institution in New York. Now, sportswriter Maury Allen takes you behind the scenes to chronicle George's reign-and how the Yankees went from being the Bronx Zoo to the classiest, most successful organization in baseball today. Here are inside stories on past Yankee greats including Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Joe DiMaggio, and revealing, in-depth portraits of current superstars such as Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, El Duque, Roger Clemens, David Cone, Mariano Rivera-and even baseball manager Joe Torre's personal battle with cancer. Along the way, we are treated to some amazing on-the-field-and off-the-field-action as seen by a journalist who has known three generations of Yankees up-close and personal. Exciting and irreverent, ALL ROADS LEAD TO OCTOBER is the definitive account of twenty-five years of baseball glory-New York Yankees style. AUTHORBIO: MAURY ALLEN began his career writing for Sports Illustrated and then moved to the New York Post, where he covered the Yankees for twenty-seven years.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing all that interesting, Allen too full of himself.......2005-05-15
I was hoping to learn some interesting things from the Steinbrenner era being a huge Yankees fan. I figured, hey it's only $6.95 can't go wrong right? Wrong. Allen adds very little new information about the Yankees. The fact that he despises Thurman Munson because *gasp* Thurman never gave him any good quotes is ridiculous. He takes great glee in his petty revenge of refusing to vote for him on Hall of Fame ballots. I lost interest in this book right about there. As previously mentioned, the only real interesting chapter is on the Peterson-Kekich wife swap. Allen is a very vindictive man and I lost all respect for his opinion following this book. Not worth a read.
Horrible.......2003-11-22
I was shocked. This book is the most boring piece of "literature" that i have ever read. I only finished it because i kept thinking that something interesting was going to come along eventually. But it never did. There is absolutely no interesting content at all. Luckily i bought it on sale for 4.95 but it is still the worst investment i have ever made. Just don't buy it. And if its given to you kindly ask for the receipt so that you can exchange it. Or use it to start a fire or to wipe yourself. This read was a total waste of time.
A good book -well worth5.00 $.......2003-07-31
A good read if you remember the 1970s thru 2000 Yankees. Maury Allen is a bit full of himself (he refused to vote for Thurman Munson for the Hall of Fame because HE did not like him as a person) and repeats some lines thought the book. It's well worth the basement price of 5.00 (new) you find around town.
Sportswriters revenge.......2002-07-18
Maury Allen's book mentions, numerous times, that Thurman Munson was not a nice man. He was rude to fans, waitresses, and Heaven Forbid-sportswriters. Allen happily mentions that he has never wasted one vote on Munson in Hall of Fame votes. In fact, not voting for him appears to be revenge for Munson not giving quotes and quips for Allen's stories in the New York Post. This is precisely the reason sportswriters should not vote for Hall of Fame inductions; as Allen states, the writers vote on what they thought of the ballplayer as a "man", not as a clutch ballplayer, who always came through when his team really needed him to. And we all know, if you don't show respect to sportswriters, you don't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. Sportswriters believe, that since they know how to put two sentences together, they are more important than the players they write about. Gotcha, Maury. And go to Hell.
A Must-NOT read.......2002-06-07
I went in to this tome with the understanding that it was written by a Yankees' beat writer, thus I expected favoritism, but this went beyond my expectations. It is written with syrupy teenage admiration. I can deal with that, but what I cannot stand is the lack of attention to detail. The author will mention the same tired story ad nauseum. If you value reading, stay way from this book.

I simply LOVE this book!!.......2007-07-17
If you love autumn and fall colors, and if you especially love rural East Tennessee, this book is a must read!! HUNDREDS of little known facts about the small towns. A book that has history and geology in it doesn't usually hold my interest for long, but this book is so well-written and filled with humorous and interesting tidbits of information about all sorts of things, I couldn't put it down. And you will find lots of backroads to explore for autumn foliage viewing. It maps them out in day trip type format, with a starting point, and descriptions of sights along the route...Great if you like auto touring or motorcycle touring. I highly recommend it.
Unveiling Ancient Lands Beneath Tennessee's October Finery.......2002-02-25
Harry Moore and Fred Brown form a wonderful team as they combine their diverse talents to offer both the "over" and "under" story of Eastern Tennessee's spectacular fall colors. Brown, a reporter for the Knoxville News-Sentinel, provides the sonorous phrases which perfectly frame Tennessee's reddish, golden autumn foliage. Moore, a Tennessee state geologist, offers a unique geological perspective on the ancient geological features that define the lands that stretch from the Cumberland Plateau all the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
With Discovering October Roads in hand, those who wander Tennessee's fiery hills will have the opportunity to view them through a lens of wonder and knowing normally reserved for just a few geology and biology majors. Moore and Brown's book is a delightful, easy read that offers days of pleasure to novice and professional alike.

Book Description
What happens to employees when their company decides to close? Thousands of workers across America have faced this prospect in the past twenty years, but relatively few have chosen to buy the company and operate it as a worker-owned concern. Forced Choices examines the celebrated case of Weirton, West Virginia where steelworkers and area residents fought to save a steelmill, community, and way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Good Sociology.......2001-03-18
Professor Varano's book is insightful, interesting, and analytically sound. His work in Forced Choices sheds light on the complex dynamics involved in the social, economic, and political life of a small community undergoing structural and cultural changes. He does a superb job in bringing into life the contradictions and ironies of these dynamics through the richness of ethnographic research and the potential of sociological analysis. Great book for work and organizations, industrial sociology, labor studies, and stratification.
He can't seem to make up his mind.......1999-12-18
This book drifts back and forth with no solid foundation. It seems as if the author can't make up his mind--which seems to set the book back at times--with the proper editing I believe this book my begin and finish some sort of consolidated theme.
Light Weight.......1999-12-18
There is much fluff and little substance. This book is not a good read.
Not much substance.......1999-12-04

Taking the reader inside the steelmill town of Weirton, West Virginia, Professor Varano provides an engaging, indepth examination of employee ownership. Through personal accounts of employees, management, "facilitators", and other citizens, one is drawn into the "battle" that ensues as a company undergoes change. Varano's analysis of this change presents sociological concepts in a MUCH more interesting fashion than is found in the usual sterile textbook.
