Since its first publication in 1986, this comprehensive guide has established itself as the essential reference book for print and book collectors, dealers in prints and illustrated books, art librarians, art professors and students, and everyone interested in graphic art.

Is a particular print a woodcut, an etching, or a lithograph? Is it an original stipple engraving or a photogravure reproduction? Is the color printed or added by hand? Arranged in self-contained sections that can be consulted individually or as part of a larger research operation, this book helps identify accurately any printed image. Included are all the manual methods and also the mechanical processes that constitute the vast majority of printed images around us. In all, some ninety different techniques are described, both monochrome and color.

Essential aspects of printing history and the printmaking craft receive full coverage, and examples are given of the features that reveal the type of print, such as varieties of line and tone. Of particular interest are the many illustrations of enlarged details showing the different appearance of various techniques under strong magnification.

The one great change during the past twenty years has been the high-quality inkjet and laser prints that are now part of everyday life. How can one tell whether an attractive image is valuable in its own right or merely an appealing reproduction? As cheap printing becomes more sophisticated, it inevitably becomes harder to identify correctly an image of this kind. Must-Have for the print lover.......2004-09-23

I almost said "for the beginning print lover," but even the pros might want occasional reminders about obscure processes.

This book displays an incredible number of processes and variations. Even within etching, there is standard intaglio process, relief etching, intaglio so deep it's amost relief, spit-biting or open-biting - well, a very long list. This gives an exacting look at the marks specific to each process, and gives good diagnostic descriptions. A special strength in this book is the differential diagnoses, the questions to ask that help distinguish two very similar kinds of marks. Every point made in the text is illustrated real samples, and that makes for a heck of a lot of illustrations.

I have almost no quibbles with this text. There are just a few minor points that Gascoigne could have brought out more clearly. First is that Japanese woodcuts are under-represented. It's a rich tradition with a number of distinguishing features: gradations of ink hand-placed on a block, occasional use of mica for luster, and occasional use of un-inked "blind" impressions to impress texture into the paper. Second is a mark that I think is unique to drypoint: the line is often asymmetric, crisp on one side and blurred on the other, capturing the asymmetry of the drypoint burr. The split drypoint line is more famous but, in my experience, less common. I've seen it only in the most aggressively worked drypoints, such as some by Picasso. Third is a feature of some dust-ground aquatints: that the white marks can sometimes form a connected mesh around the black dots, where a spirit ground always has a black ocean dotted with white islands. I know these are minor points, and I hope you see how few there are.

I'm a process nut. It's not the only way I enjoy prints, and not the way everyone enjoys them. For me, though, it really adds something to know how the maker's hand created each mark that I see. This isn't strictly a process book, and only accidentally a book of process history. It's a book about how a print looks, and seeing even more in the finest part of its looks. In the end, that's really the best reason to love a print.

PS: A little while ago, I was given a very nice color print. It was done in mezzotint style, using burnishers to work from dark to light. Instead of a rocker-made ground, though, it had an aquatint ground. Color came from inking au poupee, dabbed on the plate. The giver was quite surprised that I read its story so precisely. Read this book, and you'll know just what I saw.

Highlights of the bible but leaves one longing for more........2006-12-05

75 of the most famous Old Testament stories. Some with great illustrations, others...not so exciting. I'm not a religious person and do not know much about the bible, I found this book is a great starter for the older learner interested in reading the 'classics' of the bible. The stories have been adapted to our modern 'tongue' allowing smooth reading. An additional benefit of this version is the illustrations give an interesting (the artist's) perspective on the various themes. The print is easy to read and the paper quality is excellent.

Still, with a text of this sort, I would have expected more. Their is only the briefest of commentary by the author. I find commentary the most interesting aspect of the bible as each story has layers of meaning and multiple interpretations. Additionally I would have enjoyed more about the work of art being displayed, historical context, bio of the artist, etc; some tangible information to bring further meaning to the subject matter art and artist.

In short, for those with an eye for art, it's a great for read of the classics of the bible.

A picture is worth a thousand words........2000-04-21

The thing that I liked most about this book is that the artwork was exceptional. The stories have been told again and again, but the visual images bring the stories to life. The geneology chart in the front is a nice touch for anyone interested in passing the book down as an heirloom. Overall, it is a priceless purchase for any Jewish family.

Update this book!.......2007-08-27

I really love this book and pop/rock music fans will spend hours with it...HOWEVER this book really needs an editor to catch those little mistakes, ie, its "Topsy II" (Cozy Cole) not "Topsy Li"; "Affair of The Heart" (Rick Springfield) not "Affair of The Night". And with each succeeding edition, the charts need to be updated, (Britney Spears, for instance, has had more than one hit- "Baby, One More Time" listed as first and last both right off the bat in each succeeding edition! Adam Ant had a US Top 20 hit with "Goody Two Shoes",(1983) so why is the book listing "Room At The Top"(1990)as his first and last, just as it did with "Goody Two Shoes"?), the listings need updating, not merely added onto. Again, this is a book worth its weight in gold...but it could be SOLID GOLD with a thorough revisioning, revising.

A great way to see popular music.......2005-12-27

I love this book because it is a great way to compare and contrast the music scenes in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as some music history tidbits and photos as well.

No music fan's library should be without this book, especially if you have a collection of CDs from the United Kingdom as well as the United States.

This is also a great way to try a new singer out, by checking out their singles output.

Not up to Joel Whitburn but an interesting variation.......1998-10-19

A variation on pop-chart history books, McAleer summarizes a month's worth of charts into a single top twenty. Each page contains 3 months of singles charts, with the even numbered pages showing UK charts directly opposite the same month's summary in the US. The margins are filled with the music trivia of the day. The odd format of monthly charts exaggerates the chart success of songs that were around at the start of the month, but hurts songs that peaked in mid-month. Also odd, each country's chart also include a cross-reference to the WEEKLY position in the other country. But as a nostalgia tool, it's great fun to see what songs were popular in a given month, such as a birthday, wedding or graduation. Also includes an All-time US 100 (with The Twist at #1) and UK Top 100 (where Rock Around the Clock reigns), and cross reference by song title & artist.

why will somebody write a book like this - just gossips from news paper cuttings - starts with the case of the 5 boys in central park case - and tries to use it in proving the wilding of America - hello - they were acquited. This is a complete waste of time both writing the book and reading it.
