Book Description

In a career that spans more than fifty years, photographer Irving Penn has created some of the most arresting portraits, influential fashion studies, and provocative still lifes of the twentieth century. Although much of his work was undertaken for reproduction in magazines, since the early 1960s he has also made a limited number of platinum/palladium prints of his most celebrated photographs. A meticulous craftsman, Penn has experimented extensively with this process in order to make prints with remarkably subtle, rich tonal ranges and luxurious textures; prints that are, in fact, the exact opposite of the more neutral reproductions of his photographs that appear in the popular press.
Included in this handsomely designed and beautifully produced book are platinum/palladium prints of some of Penn’s most important photographs: portraits of Pablo Picasso, David Smith, Saul Steinberg, and Marcel Duchamp; studies of indigenous peoples in New Guinea and Peru; innovative still lifes; in addition to examples of his celebrated fashion studies.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody does it like Irving.......2006-03-29

This book is a collection of some of Irvings most prolific work. What stands out about this particular book is the beautifully printed representations of Irvings master prints.
Look at this book and you will see the roots to much that has affected the better photographers from the past 20+ years. Irving is the maestro when it comes to work without gimmick or pretense, his eye is always unfailingly in tune with what he was set to photograph and how he wished to represent it. This is classical photography like there is classical oil painting. Enjoy this folks, after Irving..there just aren't too many more alive.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Book.......2005-09-12

The first time I saw a photography of Irving Penn was in a Brochure advertising the exhibition at the National Gallery this summer. At that moment I knew I had to make a special trip back to D.C.. The platinum prints were breathtaking. I stood in front of each print for minutes; transported to another world. I felt as I could converse with the subjects; as if their essence had been revealed to me. The book is almost as good as visiting the exhibition. The only difference is the size of the prints. The same text and explanations used in the exhibit are used in the book. The quality of the paper and the color of the prints is exceptional, and accurate. This book is simply a must have!

5 out of 5 stars A must if you happen to be in the DC area..........2005-09-07

Second only to the originals. Excellent, excellent book...

Real ones will be on exhibition until October 2, 2005 (National Gallery of Arts, ground floors). If you happen to be in the DC area, and have one hour to spare, this is an exhibition you don't want to miss. The experience will be worth it & will enhance your enjoyment of the book.

4 out of 5 stars A book that will change your view on photography.......2005-08-18

Irving Penn's Platinum Prints is amazing book. As you go through the it, every turn of a page is a new experience. Each print tells a story of a person's life or a type of culture. Penn is a master in capturing the right moment at the right time. There are so many types of photos in this one book and you get a variety of views on photography
Another great feature to this book is the quality of the prints. The whole photographic process of Platinum Prints is done with the camera. There is no post camera editing. The photos also have a bronze look to them, which is only found in Platinum Prints. Overall this book is amazing; Penn is a genius with the camera. This book will change your view of photography and the way you look at the world. You will walk around looking for things to shoot, hoping to capture a photograph as good as Penns.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2005-08-16

Irving Penn's Platinum Prints is an inspiring and insightful look into the world of photography, and the unique style of Irving Penn. Each picture conveys a story while establishing a sense of truth and reality. The "platinum" technique is rich and bold with a bronze like color, that actually brings life to the photographs. This book allows for any person to step inside the artistic vision of Irving Penn, and take a closer look into the world behind the lense. I highly recommend it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Finest Vintage Photojournalism I have ever seen!.......2001-08-23

Some of the finest vintage photojournalism of the Pacific Northwest I have ever seen. If you love the Rocky Mountains, Glacier National Park, wildlife and just a plain ol' view of life in the 50's, 60's and 70's, you will love this book! The photography is black and white, depicting gorgeous landscapes, dancing bears, walls of snow, flooded towns, a childs first haircut at the barber, rescued baby mountain lions, vintage automobiles and everyday life in a small Montana town. These are a collection of photographs taken by a photojournalist working for a small newspaper in Columbia Falls, Montana, just west of Glacier National Park. A wonderful view of the life of yesteryear. A collection of historical events. Every historian, photographer and person who appreciates the innocence of yesterday, captured in brilliant photographic images, will want a copy of this book!

          2 out of 5 stars What a Perv!.......2005-09-21

I read all three of the Rosy Crucifixion series, although I don't recommend doing that. (I was in Europe and they were the only English titles available at the time). Actually, not one of these three books is necessary reading. But if you're going to read one, which you shouldn't, read this one. It is the closest one to a "love" story as Miller pursues his obsession with a mysterious beauty who appears to be a pathological liar. It is the most genuine of all his relationships.

All three books are entertainingly filthy, but that's about it. I don't object to the book due to its frank and graphic discussions of sexuality, I should make that clear. Plenty of wonderful novels contain such material. Miller should certainly not have had to endure all the censorship battles he did, and we could say the same of plenty of other writers.

However, the sensationalism surrounding the books' content may obscure the fact that these books are plagued with the author's absolute contempt for women and his dehumanizing of them. The strongest parts of the book were the colorful way in which Miller recreates pre WWII New York City life. I did enjoy his eccentric ethnic friends. However, the cruelty with which he treats his wife and child were really unappealing and if this is an autobiographical book the person it is describing is absolutely wretched.

5 out of 5 stars "...full of experience, full of mystery...".......2005-05-15

This is one of the first books I really read. Perhaps the one that started me on the path of really reading and contemplating. Or as Henry put it - "It was there like a rusty nail in a log thrown up on a deserted beach during a wintry storm. I can't express it better. You walk along the beach, the air is tangy, your spirits are high, you think clearly -- not always brilliantly -- but clearly. Then the log, a phenomenal part of the substantial world: it lies there, full of experience, full of mystery. Some man hammered that nail in somewhere, sometime, somehow. There was a reason for doing it. He was making a ship for other men to sail in. Building ships was his life-work -- and his own destiny as well as the destiny of his children went into every stroke of the hammer. Now the log lies there, and the nail is rusty, but Christ, it's more than just a rusty nail -- or else everything is crazy and meaningless..."

          i like it allot

3 out of 5 stars Great porn, mediocre literature.......2004-06-25

One thing I can say for certain about Henry Miller is that he is a far better pornographer than philosopher. His insights into human existence are hit and miss, but he definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to sex. And the sex, admittedly, almost makes this book worth reading. For anyone with an imagination, it's better than Playboy or most of the stuff that you'll find in the adult section of your video store. At least from the male perspective, Henry Miller has a firm grasp of the human being as a sexual creature.

As a writer and a philosopher, however, Miller falls painfully short. He has his moments of brilliance, but not often enough. Some passages dazzle the reader with witty, original, expressive prose. Others are either flat or incomprehensible. At times he reveals a powerful truth about what it means to live, but too often he rambles on about what seems to be a personal reflection that has little or no meaning to anyone in the world except for him.

This book would have been better - and shorter - if he just stuck with the porn.

Henry Miller's Rosy Crucifixion, his second major trilogy, took more than 10 years for the author to complete. Beginning in 1949 with Sexus, a work so controversial all of Paris was abuzz with L'Affaire Miller, (and publisher Maurice Girodias saw himself threatened with jail), following in 1952 with Plexus, and finally concluding with 1959's Nexus, the three works are a dazzling array of scenes, sexual encounters and ideas, covering Miller's final days in NY, his relationship with June Miller and her lover, his take on the arts, his favorite writers, his thoughts, his insights, his days and his nights, finally ending with a glorious farewell to the life he'd known and an anticipation of the life he would lead.

3 out of 5 stars Great, great book, disappointing edition.......2007-05-06

Preparing to move abroad where Henry Miller is still banned, I thought I could save on shipping and some shelf space by purchasing the three volumes of "The Rosy Crucifixion" printed in this single edition. Unfortunately, the book is awkwardly over-sized and looks like a textbook. A cursory perusal found several typos. I ended up giving it away and shipping the separate volumes instead.

4 out of 5 stars Fonts are a little small.......2005-04-19

I don't even know if all three books were combined together before. The text quality from this publisher seems to be in decent shape, but Miller's second trilogy was over a million words, and things are a bit... scrunched.

Might be a good deal for a college student, but my eyes aren't quite what they used to be. The ebook helps a lot, 'cause you can enlarge the text on screen.

Otherwise, it's a chronicle of Henry Miller's final days in NY before he began his legendary trip to Paris, and that last goodbye, written when the author was past 60 still sings to me as perhaps no other scribe can

Three stars for the little letters; five for the books themselves.

Sarah and Vanessa are two women on a gallactic ship filled with men and even though they're older than recorded history, their lusts cannot be contained. Exquisite artwork and plenty of interstellar sex from lesbian threesomes to a gang-bang of intergalactic proportions.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must be seen to be believed.......2000-05-09

This book is both technically excellent and very hot. It's a science fiction/fantasy blend, the story of Vanessa and Sarah, two outwardly normal (if extremely beautiful) women who each have a special secret. It's drawn in a very detailed and photorealistic style. The last 15 pages or so are panels in a single scene depicting a zero-gravity, multi-species orgy. The effect (especially when assembled into a poster-sized picture) is truly stunning. I recommend this book without reservation - extremely well-drawn and very erotic.

Rumba on the River presents a snapshot of an era when the currents of tradition and modernization combined to produce a new music along the banks of the Congo River. It is the story of twin capitals engulfed in political struggle, and the vibrant new music that flowered amid the ferment.

5 out of 5 stars How changing times and ancient traditions blended.......2004-04-04

Ably written by a published author of articles on African and Caribbean music whose work has appeared in "The Beat", "Option", "West Africa" and more, Rumba On The River: A History Of The Popular Music Of The Two Congos is an enthralling dissemination of how changing times and ancient traditions blended to create a distinctive type of music along the Congo River. From the currents of political struggle to the tides of self-expression, the history, vibrancy, and popularity of this music flowed, and its indelible impressions upon the human psyche are succinctly framed in an unforgettable prose.

5 out of 5 stars Une oeuvre de toute une vie! A lire absolument.......2004-03-24

Sorry: I'll write my appreciation in french.

Gary Stewart's book is so very well researched. If you are not familiar with the Congolese Rumba, the material will not really interest you and be difficult if not impossible to read. If you are familiar with this remarkable music in any way, you will end up seeking out and acquiring as much of this music and record titles as you can afford. I must have bought about 150 CD titles of the artists mentioned in the book.Stewart's book puts these artists and their music in the context of a history previously unwritten about in the English language. The only other book that comes to mind is Graeme Ewens' "Congo Colossus", but that title is more confined to the history of Franco (Francois Luambo Makiadi) and Le T.P. OK Jazz.If there is a criticism, it is a small one. He leaves out Orchestra Super Mazemba and Samba Mapangala. Although those artists made their mark in Kenya, they were in fact major Rumba artists from the Congo. However, Mr. Stewart performed remarkable research not to mention a history book that moves like an impossible to put down novel.

Anti-Vietnam War activist, journalist, and literary agent--David Obst has been there, done that and lived to write about it. This is the man who helped break the My Lai massacre story, who was deeply involved in bringing the Pentagon Papers to light, and who, as an agent, represented Watergate notables Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, and John Dean. In Too Good to Be Forgotten, Obst revisits the wild and woolly '60s and '70s, mixing his own coming-of-age story into the stew of political and social upheaval that marked the times. Born in 1946, Obst is, in many ways, a classic baby-boomer--he went to school at Berkeley, where he tuned in, turned on and dropped out with the best of them before eventually becoming one of "those very adults that we used to make such great fun of."

Though much of Obst's book explores territory that has already been well chronicled in other '60s memoirs, Too Good to Be Forgotten has a few fresh surprises--notably his allegation that the infamous "Deep Throat" of Woodward and Bernstein's true-crime Watergate expose, All the President's Men, was actually a composite of several players and not one person at all (a charge Woodward denies). David Obst may fall short of being the spokesperson for his generation, but his undeniable knack for finding himself neck-deep in almost every major story from the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago to the My Lai massacre makes him a unique commentator on those troubled times.

                          Book Description

God knows many of them are fools, and most of them will be sellouts, but they're a better generation than we were. Since when are youths not allowed to be asses?--Lillian Hellman on the '60s Generation. "Whether it be My Lai, Watergate, The Pentagon Papers, or any of the other tumultuous events of that era, Obst seems to be in the middle of it. To understand this period, Too Good To Be Forgotten is a must read."--Seymour M. Hersh. "Hooray and Hallelujah! David Obst is finally telling all of his secrets about publishing, politics, and the kind of journalism spawned by Watergate. Read this book and head for the bunker."--Kitty Kelley. "David Obst is as crazy as the period he writes about. His stories make me both proud and ashamed to be part of his generation." --P. J. O'Rourke. "Occasionally lucid. Doubtless the most compelling book about David Obst yet written in this century."--Taylor Branch Few people saw as much or knew as many of the primary figures of the '60s and '70s as David Obst. A journalist in the maelstrom of the anti-war movement, he helped break Seymour Hersh's Pulitzer Prize-winning My Lai Massacre story. A behind-the-scenes operator, he baby-sat the Pentagon Papers for Daniel Ellsberg. And as the hottest literary agent of the period, Obst quickly sewed up deals with the Watergate intelligentsia, including Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein and John Dean. Given his insider status, Obst offers some intriguing speculation on the identity of Deep Throat. Obst's knack for being at the center of every interesting story makes Too Good To be Forgotten a rare, you-are-there joy ride across the political and cultural frontier of that era. Surviving a youth of nuclear drop drills, Sputnik, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, Obst went on to study Chinese in Taipei. There, while working as an impromptu translator for GIs trying to pick up women in a local bar, he heard the truth about what was happening in the Vietnam War. Returning to America, he immersed himself in the anti-war movement and the countercultural zeitgeist of the '60s. Through Obst's eyes, we see the casual mix of idealism and excitement of the times: the 1968 Democratic Convention, where he barely escapes the beatings of Chicago police in Lincoln Park; the People's Park protests in Berkeley where he gets a face full of tear gas while trying to impress a comely woman; the Black Panther rally, where he receives a "Honkies for Huey" button; and the 1972 Republican Convention where Abbie Hoffman slips him an illegal substance that hits at the very moment Richard Nixon steps to the podium to accept the nomination. A definitive look at the baby boomers' coming of age, Too Good To be Forgotten puts you right in the thick of some of the defining moments of the time the kids tried to take the country away from the grown-ups. David Obst provides us with the memoir of a generation. DAVID OBST'S back-of-the-hand intimacy with the political and cultural climate of the times makes him uniquely qualified to pen the story of the baby boomer generation. A Los Angelean, he attended the University of California at Berkeley, majoring in Chinese studies. He and Seymour Hersh broke the My Lai Massacre story which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969. He aided Daniel Ellsberg with the Pentagon Papers and was literary agent for many of the important Watergate-era books, including John Dean's Blind Ambition and Woodward and Bernstein's All the President's Men. Obst is currently a writer and producer who has written a number of feature projects, including the classic, Revenge of the Nerds. He lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, artist Jane Gottlieb, and Dot the dog.

The author wonderfully describes his experiences during the tumultous years of 60s-70s and skillfully weaves his observations about all the events. The book is a very easy and quick read. But the best part is the information it packs about all the events of those times (Vietnam and My Lai, Chicago convention, Watergate..), the government's reaction and the effect on student psyche. What will leave the reader amazed at the end of the book is, how a person could have been at so many places at the "right" time! A truly wonderful work!

5 out of 5 stars A book that must be read by those under 30........1998-11-22

This book was written by a man who has done and seen things that most of us only witness in the movies. It is exciting as well as touching and informative and a must read by those of us under 30 who want to enjoy ourselves while learning about one of the most exciting times in our country's history. This book should be recommended reading for every college student. I loved it!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars He was at all the right places and knew all the key players........1998-11-10

Obst was in all the right places and knew all of the key players from the 60's and 70's. He explains how strange it was to grow up in the 50's practicing the 'duck and cover' drills at school, and fearing death at any moment. As a early baby boomer myself, many memories were brought back about those times. I want my in-laws to read his book to understand why people my age are so different from other earlier and later groups.

5 out of 5 stars A charming, revealing book about America and growing up........1998-10-24

Obst's book is charming and revealing of not only himself but his -- our -- times. Although the media have focused on his "DEEP THROAT" revelations (and beat up on him unfairly, I think), the real story is how this "Forest Gump/Zelig" guy moved through all our lives and what he saw. The love story(ies) are touching, and the portraits of people like Ellsberg and Sy Hersh are important historically.
