Juan Munoz
ASIN: 1854373587 |
Book Description
Born in Madrid in 1953, Juan Muñoz is internationally renowned for sculptural installations in which he situates the human figure within elaborate or complex architectural settings. This book documents an installation devised specifically for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. Muñoz creates spaces using elements such as patterned floors, balconies, and furniture. By a highly considered placement of figures, the artist entices the viewer into an engagement with the implied dramas unraveling within. Muñoz's cast of characters includes dwarfs, ventriloquist's dummies, ballerinas, and circus performers. His work makes reference to earlier art, such as the paintings of Velasquez and classical sculpture, as well as to the films of Luis Buñuel. An introduction by Susan May to the work of Juan Muñoz is followed by an anthology of texts and images that have informed Muñoz's thinking in the evolution of the Turbine Hall project. These are in the form of photographs and drawings by the artist, facsimiles of newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and passages from novels--a sketchbook of ideas that convey the process of making art.
Customer Reviews:
Best Marker Technique.......2007-03-20
The best marker technique book you can find. Very easy to follow and apply them to many different renderings. The technique shown in this book is well known to industrial designers especially Car Designers or product designers. You'll see same techniques used on beautiful Car Design Renderings from The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Car designers use vellum instead of marker papers. They use both side of the vellum to create different value effect with same marker. This book will make your renderings and presentation stand out from your competition. Highly recommended for students, designers, architects and 3D artists.
It WILL help u a lot!!!.......2001-07-04
Well, I've searched for many, MANY, books and when I found this one I couldn't belive on it! It shows marker techniques very simple to use and step by step. But I'm still a student of architecture, so it's also good for those who already knows a little. It's woderful for those that like design! ^^
Learn to do amazing renderings with markers and pastels.......1999-06-08
As an upcoming concept designer I've been searching for a book which explaines the techniques on how to render a sketch with markers and pastels. This book shows you how to rendering different products with the same technique. Some of them do almost look as if they were a photo. It is much of a Japanese styl, but it really illustrates your idea. Actually, iF Amazon would have shown the cover you would see whats really in this book. If you like those illustrations done by industrial designers, drawn with markers and pastels on vellum, with flying perfect lines, amazing shadows, you will love this book.
BUT WAIT! The only bad thing is that it shows you how to work the SAME tachnique on a variety of objects. The technique is great, sure is, but it is one technique!
Customer Reviews:
Valuable book but it needs a revision...Pronto!.......2005-06-22
As digital imagining becomes more and more prolific, marker rendering seems to be a dying art. Thats a shame because it can be a beautiful tool for artists of all types. This book is a valuable reference tool for artists but the techniques are somewhat outdated, which is understandable seeing that the book was written in the early 80's. Another complaint is the lack of color pictures. This is a marker book! Give us color pictures! For the price it is a good deal and one of the few books on the subject but I would seek other publications to supplement this book.
Great, for its goals........2005-04-11
There are lots of times and places where you just need to make a good picture - or good enough - really fast. What you need is to create a visual idea and to convey it, right now, to those people who literally won't get it until you draw a picture for them.
Marker rendering is the established way to do it. Saying that you use "markers" is just too weak, though. This is about doing whatever works, to make a picture that lasts just long enough. There are the masks or friskets, highlights in gouache or white grease pencil, cutouts, layers of paper, and all the other media that go into a "marker" rendering. Even when you use the markers by themselves, there are endless variations of line, weight, guides (surely you've customized your triangles to lift the edge away from wet marks), color, and gray. Heck, you might have more than 20 markers even if you have only grays, warm and cool, in a dozen values, and new/juicy vs. old/dry.
This can work well as a text, with a series of graded exercises. It just can't stand by itself, though, it really needs a good teacher to go with it. You'll need someone with a trained eye for the gazillion things that go wrong, and with a back pocket full of ways to make them go right.
As far as it goes, this book is really good. If your pictures are there to convey an idea and not just to be pictures, this book is one of the student's best friends.

Needs more color.......2001-03-14
A wonderful book that includes great techinque and design. It would have been nice to view more colored images. Over half of the examples are in black and white. This feature was a slight dissapointment when I first open the book.
Breadth of content with step by step descriptions.......2001-02-03
I think this book is wonderful for anyone trying to learn rendering techniques. Even though the book is a little dated, it still communicates the principals of marker renderings. It's starts with an overview of the key factors to keep in mind when using markers: controlling the view, defining form, enhancing light, defining the main characteristics of materials and enhancing the surface. Then it goes into each of these factors explaining each of them with various examples. It also compares some of the most commonly used papers: Vellum, Bond, Marker paper, blueprint to show their marker absorption rate, degree of translucency and how the same rendering looks on each of them. It covers basic marker techniques, scrub coat technique, wet blending, masking and editing techniques, bringing forms out of backgrounds. It also touches on pastels, but only slightly. As a product designer I think this boos is a must have for a beginner. But it's also a very good reference book for experienced designers looking nostalgic for good old marker techniques.
Great for learning artists.......1999-12-08
This book effictively describes various ways and methods of using markers for illustration, and designing purposes (although mainly targeted toward designers, this shouldn't discourage you if you're an illustrator). A sampling of what you'll learn...
Materials, from the markers you should choose to the various kinds of papers available and how they affact your drawing. Application of markers, controling markers, and effective ways to represent shading and depth for oyur needs. Defining materials with marker: Chrome, Plastic, Glass, Leather, Vegetation, etc... the drawings are very nice. There is much more you'll learn through the pages of this book, these are just some of the highlights.
Unfortunately, I had to give it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the fact that it is rather outdated matieral-wise (markers have changed since 1983), and it is mainly targeted toward designers (this book would recieve 5 stars for the aspiring designer!). BUT, I learned a great deal from this book even as an illustrator / cartoonist, and it is very easy to incorporate what you learn from this book into illustration purposes like cartooning or figure drawing. I'd highly recommend this book for those who are looking to improve in markers, which admitily give your drawings a look that paint or colored pencils alone cannot achive.
Customer Reviews:
the best of the best.......2006-12-13
The book is excellent! Drawings are beautiful and step by step instructions detailed and very helpful. I totally agree with Henry Berry and cannot explain better how great this book is.
Excellent Book.......2006-08-04
I received this book and it is on of the MOST comprehensive books on fashion illustration. Truly worth the $$$
styles of contemporary clothing and how to illustrate them.......2006-04-02
"Colors for Modern Fashion" is a thorough, outstanding course on fashion drawing by an author who is a teacher of this commercial art at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and teacher of international design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Riegelman goes well beyond the typical approach of instruction on general techniques and attention to specifics of clothing such as, say, sleeves or collars. She surely does cover all the basics and all the types of clothing (e. g., women's, children's)--but it is the way she does which distinguishes this manual. The first thing that strikes one is the vibrant colors and the stylish shapes of the garments. Anyone involved in the field of fashion knows how important this is in getting attention for designs. Also, in places the author uses examples of entire outfits and parts of them from top fashion designers as references for discussion and practice. A "full-pleated silk dress with wide lace trim" designed by Christian Lacroix is used as one example and exercise. There's other fashion clothing by Armani, Prada, Issey Miyake, Russell Sage, and many other top designers similarly pictured for other areas of instruction. This is especially instructive and useful. It informs readers about the details of the designs of the masters while teaching the techniques of drawing, so that the book is in some way a course on fashion design as well as drawing. Riegelman knowledgeably and succinctly discusses fabrics and their characteristics, colors, and features of models which would accentuate particular pieces of clothing. The abundance of such touches makes one feel in the know about the field to a certain degree rather than simply learning about fashion drawing from conventional examples and exercises. The many colorful, vibrant, stylish fashion illustrations of clothes and details of them on mannequin-like figures are a treat in themselves, like looking at a classy, engrossing window display of a fine clothing store. And of course such handsome, skilled fashion illustrations are inspiration for aspiring fashion artists.

Customer Reviews:
All ye need to know on earth- For Keats Beauty is Truth .......2006-07-10
It is possible to argue that the greatest Keats is that of the annus mirabilis 1819 when he wrote the Odes. This work contains the great Keats' lyrics among the most musical , sensuous poetry in the English language. The sense that' beauty may not be truth' for everyone, but that for Keats it certainly is. This is of course one of many different editions which contain the great
lyrics of Keats. It is pleasant, light , compact a pleasure to hold and to read.
Better than I imagined........2006-03-14
The arrival of this book came sooner than expected, which was very welcome, and the shipping packaging was very strong and sturdy. The book was in perfect condition, and is a beautiful edition of Keat's poems. Thank you. I couldn't have asked for more.
Milky white cream or soap to the tongue?.......2004-07-05
Keats' message is abstruse. He points at the illusion of "I" as being an intertwining of "we". Opposites are illusions. The highest aspect of human existence is in love: the personal contact and the breaking of the illusion of "I" in connection, transcendence, created in union or fellowship with others. No other poet wrote so creamy white to the tongue, but was he cheating by not being as forward and clear, or substantive; over stepping the allowance given to poetry of form supporting meaning. Beauty is its own vindication is another message of Keats "truth is beauty, beauty is truth" and I think by his writing style he felt the slippery smooth qualities would override the illusive aspects, beauty would be its own vindication, if not add a mysterious spell-binding quality to his writing -- but is it just smoke and mirrors? Life is a dream within a dream, within a dream... (sounds like the mocked priest in "The Princess Bride" but this is Keats). This a general feeling for his longer poem, among his shorter poems he has gems like "autumn". Change is a constant, life is an enigma, so is Keats.
Oscar Wilde's openning treatis in the "Picture of Dorian Grey" seems to be in-line with Keats or is it an attack on Keats in the the end?
Keats was not on the mega superstar status as Byron, in his day. Keats is as much for our time as his own. He gained, apparently, the energy and will to take up poetry due to being youthfully influenced by Byron, wearing his shirt open and such, but any comparison stops there. Byron was a driving force for his time and could be argued to be the first modern super pop star of the young generational angst, outsider sort, as well as having a significant mark on thinking to come. He was not the athiest as Shelly but closer to the agnostic/Pagan sympathizer of Byron.
I have mixed feelings about Keats, mostly on the negative side. In the end I guess Keats was clear: beauty is its own reward, over substance, over philosophy, what are these things, to him, but illusions, all is illusion, the closest thing to truth, if there is such a thing, is beauty, and Keats did write beautiful words in beautiful ways. Maybe I will read him again someday.
Keats Poems.......2000-04-04
If you're a true Keats fan this is a must to add to your collection. Contains all of Keat's best work. Or enrich somone's life who is not familiar with Keats. A great gift idea.
Book Description
Originally trained in medicine and becoming a pharmaceutical salesman at twenty-one, Keats soon abandoned the profession in order to live for and by his poetry. He published three volumes of poetry before his death of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-five. This authoritative new collection
contains the majority of Keats's non-dramatic poetry, including "Endymion" in its entirety, and a substantial selection of letters that provide important background material to the poet's life. Offering both prose and verse in an accessible, chronological order, this collection also includes useful
appendices on "St. Agnes' Eve" and "La Belle Dame Sans Merci," and provides a handy glossary of classical names. Keats poetry and his letters reveal a spirit of questing vitality and profound understanding. This remarkable volume attests to an astonishing maturity of power.
Customer Reviews:
John Keats.......2003-05-22
Doing a review of someone like Frost, Keats, Rilke, or Shakespeare is like reviewing the Bible, it is impossible. It has already been established that this man's poetry is mastery. Now the question is thus, what book should you purchase? If you want a small taste of his work at a good price, this is it. With this small, under $... edition, you can decide if you want to purchase anymore of his books. I say it is a great book for a poetry shelf in anyone's library.
The brillance of Keat's poetry.......2000-04-13
What a wonderful anthology of John Keats' poetry. The selections in this book range from his well known and loved pieces like "Lamia" and " To Autumn" to less familliar but still gracefully written "On the Sea" and "To Leigh Hunt, Esq." The timeline in the front of the book is helpful, giving an overview of what the world was like in Keats' short lifespan. Many critics wonder what he would've accomplished had he lived longer, and by reading this collection of his poems, one can only image the brilliant works he might have given us to further his powerful legacy.

1926. About one-half of the contents of this book are reproductions of lectures on W.B. Keats delivered from the Chair of Poetry at Oxford in the spring and summer of 1925. The other half was not used in lecturing, because Garrod found it difficult to cut what he had to say to convenient lecture lengths and parts of it carried too much detail.

Book Description
The book covers and combines both the personal development of the person Nick Cave and the history of his career. To a large extent, Nick Cave´s biography records and represents an entire generation and its attitudes towards life. The book is meant to depict parts of the puzzle Nick Cave, places them in their chronological biographical context and deals with deeper-going questions. Next to the text passages the book works with approx. 50% visuals - concert, band, back-stage and private photos. A comprehensive collage with newspaper cuttings with as much unpublished photographic material as possible and the artist's drawings which have never before been published shed a completely new unusual light on the person Nick Cave.
Customer Reviews:
A Lovely Visual Coffee Table Book.......2007-01-12
While I haven't delved too deeply into the text, from what I can tell, it leaves a bit to be desired. The written portion of the book isn't too specific and reads like a bland list of what Nick did each year.
However, the reason I bought this book, and the reason I give it four stars anyway, is because of the photographs. The photos are beautiful, chronicling Nick Cave's early years up to just a few years ago. The book is a good, large size, with plenty of photos to suit many Cave fans. If you're looking for a decent written history, I'd look elsewhere, but if it's photos you want, this is definitely worth the money.
A very good book with poor binding.......2005-06-13
Poor binding. The pages just fell off. I don't know if it's just my copy. Great pictures though, and a nice, concise biography.
Only Somewhat Informative, But Great Pics.......2002-12-31
I suppose I expected a little more meat in a book of this scope, but in the world of pop music writing substance is often way down the list.
The authors give an overview of Cave's early life and how he came to be involved in music. It does a fairly good job of charting the formation of his first bands, the move to London, the making of the Birthday Party, the years in Berlin, then Cave's meteoric rise at the helm of the Bad Seeds. But overall, the book is only mildly informative and skips around incoherently at times. The quality of the writing is spotty but it still manages to convey some sense of the man and his motivations.
What I didn't like about the book was the author taking a couple of gratuitous cracks at Margaret Thatcher. What does Thatcher have to do with a book about Nick Cave? And do the authors assume that all Nick Cave fans dislike her for some reason? Straying from the subject can be dangerous and in this case is a distraction from the reader gaining an increased understanding of Nick Cave and his music.
What I did like was the photography. The book is packed with great shots of Cave, his friends, family, and colleagues in a variety of situations. If you are a serious fan of Cave's, the book is worth the price for the pics alone.
The Method in His Madness- Meet Nick Cave.......2001-10-21
Artist? Hedonist? Rock n Roller? This book reveals Nick as all of these, and yet with his integrity intact. The book places him on his deserved pedestal but still manages to dish up dirt, as told by Nick's detractors from the fickle media circus of the '80s. After reading of his battles and struggles - artistically and with his own demons, I enjoyed his music even more knowing he worked damn hard to be heard. The book sheds light on what he was up against. Filled with intimate photo portraits and quotes from Nick's friends, "Life and Music..." is a lovely biography that leaves you informed, but wanting much more. A lot of the copy is dedicated to disography. I wished for more insight into his personal life, psychologically. Physically, the book is huge and loosely bound, feeling unstable, ready to spill. Much like The Cavester himself perhaps. 4 stars for lack of much interview with Cave personally. But 4 stars for a satisfying peek into his world.
Fabulous Visuals.......2001-10-20
I received this book as a gift, with little knowledge of its contents. I was a bit disappointed with the text; as far as a biography of Nick Cave goes, there is not much to offer. I found most of the writing to be the kind of fawning, "aren't-I-clever" music journalist style I dislike. There is little information on Mr. Cave's formative years, and the bulk of the writing focuses on his musical releases (done in that music journalist way, as opposed to actually imparting any information.) However- the photographs are stunning. This is brilliant photography, and I would say I have more of a feel for Nick Cave as an artist from studying the pictures than from reading the text. I found Ian Johnston's biography "Bad Seed" an excellent book for information on the LIFE of Nick Cave, and after reading it, the photos in Maximilian Dax' book were even more meaningful. I'd recommend both books for a more complete look at Nick Cave.

Complete and Up to Date reference book.......2000-11-08
A very detailed and complete book on Wireless Local Loop technologies currently available. Unlike other books, this one was written in a direct and easy language that fills the requirements even of manager or Engineering people. In my opnion it's also clear in the book the author's preference to CDMA technology, but the book also discuss others like TDMA, TDD etc..
In sumary: Not five Star, but the best reference currently available at this time.
