Book Description

Sometimes seeing is more difficult for the student of art than believing. Taylor, in a book that has sold more than 300,000 copies since its original publication in 1957, has helped two generations of art students "learn to look."

This handy guide to the visual arts is designed to provide a comprehensive view of art, moving from the analytic study of specific works to a consideration of broad principles and technical matters. Forty-four carefully selected illustrations afford an excellent sampling of the wide range of experience awaiting the explorer.

The second edition of Learning to Look includes a new chapter on twentieth-century art. Taylor's thoughtful discussion of pure forms and our responses to them gives the reader a few useful starting points for looking at art that does not reproduce nature and for understanding the distance between contemporary figurative art and reality.

4 out of 5 stars Regularly chosen by instructor.......2006-09-07

I have used this textbook a number of times in teaching Art Appreciation classes. The choice of chapter topics works fairly well with beginning students: one chapter discusses the structure, composition and style of two specific paintings in contrast with one another; another chapter makes a study of the work of one artist. There is even a chapter devoted to modern art (a tough sell with some first-time students). I only fault the highly specific and somewhat tedious chapter discussing all aspects of color. I tend to skip over this one and leave it for the independent reading of anyone interested. Otherwise good, and I will use it again until something comes along with a better overview. Mostly black and white illustrations -- only two in color.

4 out of 5 stars A worthy course........2005-06-18

Interesting, accesible and ultimately enlightening but inclined also to be dry in an "Idiot's guide" kind of way, this renders the topic a little lack lustre which for me detracts from the point of veiwing art and getting any kind of personal, emotional experience from it. Excellent for making art accesible nonetheless and demystifying the nonsense that art glitterarty types surround the topic in so needlessly and prentiontiously.

                      Book Description

This memoir is both a private testimony and a critical study, written by the woman who was Boetti's companion during the first 20, and most decisive, years of his career. It is also an album of photographs and drawings, many of them never before published. Witness the very individual journey of the "shaman/showman," as Boetti referred to himself, evoked through images and words that recall the key events, times, and places of the 1960s and 70s generation of artists. Boetti's artistic output spanned 30 years, from 1964 until his death in 1994, and he was prolifically inventive. He graduated from Arte Povera to Conceptualism with an enchanting playfulness, but also with powerful philosophical and geopolitical intuitions that only now fully reveal their prophetic nature.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated and exciting.......2003-07-31

Yesterday I saw the second movie of Tomb Raider, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, and I thought that it was just a cheap version of the Striker series (Spriggan as the Japanese title). The story of the movie had the same kind of the world, but it was not as deep as the Striker series. So, I felt like reading these books today. Striker has kind of complicated stories because if you don't know anything about common knowledge on the world history, you're not mature enough to read and enjoy these books. Striker also shows the way the Japanese people make weight of the spritual enlightenment. If you want to enjoy more than just SciFi actions, these books are way to go!! In Japan, more than 10 titles have been published. The more you read, the more you see the deepness of Striker stories. I really hope every title will be published in North America. Oh, the animation movie of Striker is not so good, by the way. Read the books.

2 out of 5 stars Another step downward.......2000-05-09

This series has declined steadily since Vol. I, a collection I enjoyed greatly... which is why I've stuck it out until now. The story is weak, the art is crude... there really isn't anything here I can point to that I think is very good.

I really dislike panning things, but this installment in the 'Striker' series deserves to be panned. It's also the last volume I will be purchasing.

Arguably the most tumultuous time in recent American history, the Civil Rights years inspired the most rational and irrational of human behaviors and set the stage for sweeping reform in the nation's race relations. Juan Williams's moving chronicle of the movement stands as the definitive history of the era.

                            5 out of 5 stars Documentary that reads like a spell-binding fiction.......2007-01-05

In October 06, I watched 2 parts of the PBS series with the same title. It became clear to me for the first time the kind of grossly unfair treatment, injustice that African American had to endure, as recently as the 1960s. After seeing the book on Amazon, I know I have to get this. The book was even better than the TV episodes. Absolutely riveting and couldn't put it down. The descriptive parts were intermingled with first hand accounts from courageous African American men and women who were willing to, and many did, lose their lives to stand up to injustice. A must read that gives unparalleled insight into a decade of American Civil Rights history.

                            4 out of 5 stars very educational.......2006-08-17

I have never seen the PBS series but I enjoyed the book which gives a good account of what happened in the years 54-65. Of course it misses things but it will give you the basics.

Only annoying thing are the little interviews with people in the middle of the text so you have to flip back and forth.

                            Pictures are great

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Primer.......2004-04-28

By now the number of volumes written on the Civil Rights Movement could fill whole libraries. Yet fifteen years later, this book still stands as one of the best introduction to the early years of the movement. Books such as Taylor Branch's Pillar of Fire and Parting the Waters may cover the same era of 1954 to 1965; this book is a good introduction for those who may be intimidated by Branch's comprehensive volumes. Rather than trying to cover everything, the book takes its cues from the documentary series and examines a select set of pivotal moments of the movement: school desegregation, the Montgomery bus boycott, the march on Washington, the Selma to Montgomery march and others. Each chapter delves into the story of the events, but also fleshes out the areas between these momentous events, both telling the background and hearing the experiences of those there, in their own words. The book is readable, not the dry tone that many associate with history books. But most of all it gives the reader the chance to delve into an important part of American history in the second half of the 20th century. This is an excellent book that should be picked up by anyone wanting to get a sense of where America was moving in these pivotal eleven years.

                            5 out of 5 stars WOW !.......2003-04-01

Great book ! I was born in 1957 so I wanted to learn about the Civil Rights Movement as it was when I was growing up. This is not only an excellent history, but an incredibly interesting story, and a shocking testament to the injustices the Black people have suffered in America. I learned a lot and gained some insight into this issue.

4 out of 5 stars First hand account.......2001-07-07

The book reads smoothly and contains unique ethnographic information. The book follows a chronological order of events in the civil rights movement. Readers who are interested in an eye witness account of the movement between 1954 and 1965 should purchase this book. It would be appropriate for a high school educational setting.

                              4 out of 5 stars A book to ponder..........2000-02-24

Quite by accident I began reading this thoughtful book. I found it easy to read, kind and thought provoking. I picked it up to read first by scanning the table of contents. Various chapters and sub-chapters caught my eye and as I read my heart was was also touched. Here was an author revealing his thoughts and life in an honest straightforward manner without malice, anger or fear. The book deals with America in the modern world and its author acknowledges the anger and attitude toward the black race as well as from the black race.

I found the sections on black atheletes, inter-racial relationships, and religion particularly interesting given the complexities that exist.

I recommend this book to all races who wish to begin to understand America more deeply and rationally.

                                    Book Description

"What does psychology have to do with affirmative action?" In the author's opinion, questioning the relevance of psychology to an issue such as affirmative action is, unfortunately, not an uncommon query, even among many people within the field of psychology. When most people, both within and outside the field, make an association between psychology and affirmative action, it is in terms of the debate over racial differences in performance on intelligence tests. Thus, the decision to write this book was based upon what was seen as a need to demonstrate and highlight the substantive contribution that psychology can make in terms of improving our understanding of why it is that people respond to affirmative action with a variety of reactions and emotions. The primary goal of this book is to discuss empirical research and theoretical work on affirmative action from a psychological perspective. The intended audience is academics, including undergraduate and graduate students, and social science researchers.

                                          Book Description

Our basic assumption about the law is that it is designed to operate fairly and openly. But with human beings as the ultimate decision makers, how do we prevent discrimination within the legal arena, and how does the law decide whether others have behaved in a discriminatory manner? Social Consciousness in Legal Decision Making examines four controversial areas involving people’s perceptions of others—racial profiling, affirmative action, workplace harassment, and hate speech/hate crime—from the perspectives of psychology, decision theory, and the law.

This book's contributing experts raise these critical questions:

Social Consciousness in Legal Decision Making invites the legal and psychology communities to work together in solving some of our most pressing social problems.
