A Lot of Encouragement in a Small Package.......1997-12-21
I wish I had this book when I was younger, or at least the chapter on dealing with external pressures. I connected so well to a lot of the stories related in this book. There are so many passages where I felt, "I felt that way!" An especially powerful subchapter for me is Perspective--Valuing your Art and Creativity more than Society does.
A minor complaint: I wish that the author had included more resources in the Artists Materials appendix, and had included the web page addresses to the businesses that were listed. If we truly are no longer at the mercy of the local hobby store, as Ms. Warner says, these are important. There's only one artist supply store and three framing companies listed; I've found several other artist supplies on the web that could have been included on this list; still it's good information for those who still like to do business by telephone.
I've got two years of junior college study as a commercial artist, but I'm a self-taught artist, and I'd recommend this book to anyone who was engaged in art study, especially to first-year students. With this book to guide them, if it turns out being a professional artist isn't in the cards, maybe young people won't be discouraged, like I was, and they can at least assess the extent to which they can take their talent without the debilitating loss of self-esteem, such as that which I suffered. Here's a book that says even if you're not a paid artist, you still are one, if deep in your gut you say so, and it tells you how to keep art out of the closet for good.

Book Description
Now in Paperback "The practice of photography as we know it today would be all but inconceivable were it not for the remarkable innovations of Harold Edgerton."-ARTnews A bullet seen the instant it explodes through an apple . . . a milk-drop splash transformed into a perfect coronet . . . a golf swing shown in a procession of exposures taken milliseconds apart0some of the world's most famous photographs were taken by Harold Edgerton, the late MIT scientist who invented the electronic flash. This great classic, first published in 1987 and now back in print in paperback, celebrates Edgerton's genius and his lasting influence on photography. More than 125 superbly reproduced plates illustrate the phenomenal range of his work, and Edgerton himself describes his efforts to capture the world in microseconds. Prizewinning author and photography historian Estelle Jussim discusses his profound legacy, and commentaries accompanying each plate explain the techniques used to create these exceptional images. HAROLD E. EDGERTON (1903-1990) was one of America's most acclaimed scientists, known not only for his high-speed flash photography but also for his lifelong explorations of underwater phenomena. He invented most of the sonar and camera equipment used by Jacques Cousteau and by the team that found the wreck of the Titanic. ESTELLE JUSSIM is photo historian emerita at Simmons College in Boston. GUS KAYAFAS was Edgerton's picture editor as well as his student. He is founder of the photography laboratory Palm Press, near Boston. 125 photographs, 25 in full color, 100 in duotone, 2 full-color gatefolds, 9 x 111/4"

Fascinating photos.......2002-02-08
I found the commentary on individual pictures to be informative and interesting. The introduction, however, seemed to wander into an essay about art movements in the mid-1900s and didn't provide information I wanted to know.
Overall this is a fascinating work to flip through.

A pioneer of high-speed photography, Stephen Dalton is one of the world's greatest nature photographers. These 250 astonishing images celebrate the birds, insects, mammals and countryside that Dalton appreciates as an artist, a scientist and a lover of wildlife.
The concentrated energy of the visual work is offset by the light touch Dalton brings to the accompanying text. Informative and engaging, he tells of the challenges of adjusting to his subject's schedule rather than following his own. But Dalton's greatest gift is revealing the adaptive genius of some of nature's most familiar creatures.
Secret Worlds features:
Naturalists everywhere will be enthralled by this vivid exploration of the hidden worlds that surround us.

Alchemy of Time Frozen, Nature Revealed.......2002-07-31
Dalton forces the viewer to stop in time with the subject photographed and see a moment as it can never be seen.
While there is joy and wonder is looking at Dalton's amazing photographs, there is also sadness in knowing that so many of these incredible creatures are going extinct.
Must-have, magnificent photos, fascinating facts.......1999-11-19
Bats, birds, ladybugs, butterflies, dragonflies, bees & a vast array of other animals are captured in mid flight. The several frames of a chameleon lashing out its tongue to capture its prey are captivating.

Captions for each creature give fascinating information on their daily lives, eating habits, & special abilities. Get this book, I promise you won't be disappointed.

After the Gold Rush: Tarnished Dreams in the Sacramento Valley (Revisiting Rural America)
David Vaught Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0801884977 |
Book Description
"It is a glorious country," exclaimed Stephen J. Field, the future U.S. Supreme Court justice, upon arriving in California in 1849. Field's pronouncement was more than just an expression of exuberance. For an electrifying moment, he and another 100,000 hopeful gold miners found themselves face-to-face with something commensurate to their capacity to dream. Most failed to hit pay dirt in gold. Thereafter, one illustrative group of them struggled to make a living in wheat, livestock, and fruit along Putah Creek in the lower Sacramento Valley. Like Field, they never forgot that first "glorious" moment in California when anything seemed possible.
In After the Gold Rush, David Vaught examines the hard-luck miners-turned-farmers -- the Pierces, Greenes, Montgomerys, Careys, and others -- who refused to admit a second failure, faced flood and drought, endured monumental disputes and confusion over land policy, and struggled to come to grips with the vagaries of local, national, and world markets.
Their dramatic story exposes the underside of the American dream and the haunting consequences of trying to strike it rich.

the social construction of American male consumerism.......2004-06-07
This was a unique blend of history and cultural studies. For readers that look down on cultural studies as fluff, this book has much "concrete" information for them to appreciate.
I appreciated most that despite the all-encompassing title, the author both emphasizes that this was a middle-class white trend at the same time that he does write women and people of color into the picture. For instance, he mentions that Helen Gurlie Browne was the female Hugh Hefner; he adds that "Ebony" does much of what "Esquire" does. In discussing exotica, the author not only brings up the American fascination with Polynesia, but with Britain as well.
The author avoids viewing men as a monolithic category. He stresses that youth or the valorization of youth was employed as a tool to get grown men to spend.
The author is a British academic. It's funny to read a book about the United States with words like "programme," "colour," and "enrolment" in it. Further, I'm impressed that an academic outside the US had access to so much American material. An American who wrote a similar book on any other country couldn't have done so with out a sabbatical to that land.
This book may frustrate Marxists. The brief, somewhat flippant introduction tries to address this, but not really. Hearing about men spending money and buying butter (rather than guns) may make one think the author is celebrating this trend, rather than just reporting on it. Though this book is positive, rather than normative, some readers that resent American materialism may have difficulty processing through this book.
This book definitely sees heterosexuality and doesn't just take it as a privileged given. The author constantly has to mention that advertisers had to convince straight male shoppers that buying leisure items didn't make them gay. Still, homophobia is not cited enough here. The question of where this leaves gay male consumers is never even a thought here.
The author quotes so much from Ehrenstein and Chudacoff that it may feel difficult to point to what new territory he is covering.
This book will help readers to think deeply about modern magazines like "Maxim" or current catchwords like "metrosexual." I highly recommended it to anyone interested in men's studies, American history, and the marketplace.
