awesome.......2007-04-05
this is the book for those people who have seen and like the Cremaster Cycle. a super companion that gives very interesting background, and criticism of the cycle.
Lot of Meat .......2006-05-04
Whether you like Barney or not, this book made for the Guggenheim solo exhibition in 2002 have lot of meat. 500 pages covering his Cremaster series (1,2,3), with numerous photograph stills of his films, reference photos, and his works. Approximately, 340 works are shown. The book quality is very good (did not quite match the creativity of Damien Hirst's I want to spend the rest...book), but nevertherless, this book will serve as Barney's important documentation.
Belive it or not...Incomplete coverage!.......2005-08-29
I finally bought a copy of this book after putting it off since the show in 2003. I'm glad I got it before it goes out of print, and recommend the hardcover over the softcover as it is a beatiful object/catalog.
Sadly, as I have looked more closely into the book since I got it home, I noticed that the book doesn't come close to covering the majority of the actual works that resulted from the Cremaster films. Perhaps this wasn't the reason for the catalog, but I was under the impression that such a huge book would be pretty comprehensive in its documentation of the works it's about. Not so with this volume. Barney is a master of the capitalist side of the fine art world...and no doubt knew that if he reproduced the works he has sold in tandem with the release of each film, his auction prices would suffer. Therefore his immediate sale prices (from the studio/gallery) would stagnate as well(prices rarely drop from that artist directly).
So, what you get here is a fat volume with tons of sketches, production photos, and documentation of the sculpture. In addition you get a verbose essay by Nancy Spector as well as remembrances from participants in this massive undertaking. It is in the lists of works from the cycle that the volume's gaps become apparent. Barney sold several "artist framed" suites of photos from each film...which act as stand alone pieces of work to be consumed by collectors and institutions. It is these works that are not fully documented in this volume. Even if they had done a page of thumbnails for each of the five films, it would be better than to reproduce one photo from a suite of three or four as they have done here...and each film had 5-10 of these suites made in editions ranging from 2 to 50 copies. Look for another book somewhere down the line documenting these works (or the original volumes released for each of the films which cost an arm and a leg now) to get these in your library. Otherwise, the only place I've seen these works reproduced is in auction catalogs, exactly where Barney and his supporters are happy to see them show up.
I have a certain level of respect for what Barney has accomplished here. Both as an artist and as a viewer. Unfortunately, this amazing artifact if NOT the be all and end all of the Cremaster Cycle, and one must look elsewhere to get the whole picture(s).
Here's to hoping that a DVD release of the whole cycle fills in the gaps left over by this book, which is eye candy rather than a substantive look at this artist's work.
Gorgeous........2005-04-27
Nancy Spector, Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle (Guggenheim, 2002)
Nancy Spector's tome may just have been meant as an accoutrement to the Guggenheim's massive Barney exhibition in 2002, but as an accoutrement, it stands out. Not only in its physical dimensions (Amazon's website says the shipping weight of this book is 8.6 pounds, but after lugging it around for six weeks, I'm willing to put money on the idea that it's closer to twenty-five; it's over a foot tall, and easily as thick as one of the larger volumes of the unabridged OED), but in the concept itself. Spector's essay on Barney takes up the first ninety-two pages, after which comes a glossary of Cremaster terms that reads better than any other glossary you've ever read (think of The Dictionary of the Khazars to get an idea, but using all terms that relate to the Cremaster cycle). Then, of course, the photographs. Mostly video and production stills from the films, but also photos of pieces of Barney's original sketches and storyboard, the sculptures made after the films, and other wonderful little oddities. Good stuff, and a must-have for any Barney fan. Those who have just heard the name, but not seen the films, will get an excellent overview of what you've managed to miss. Those who have no idea who Matthew Barney is, check it out to see what all the fuss is about.
In other words, you want this. ****
a question, really.......2004-02-09
Why would anyone pay hundreds for the H/C version, if a shiny, new paperback is only $40? Please enlighten this fool? Thanks!
Book Description
Now in Paperback The definitive user's guide and then some to Matthew Barney's epic five-part film series, The Cremaster Cycle is filled with hundreds of Barney's fantastical images and surveys the project, which uses the biological model of sexual difference as its conceptual departure point. Three essays by Barney experts articulate the series' diverse themes and explore the artist's innovative aesthetic vocabulary; interviews with key collaborators, a composer, costume designer, make-up artist, technicians, and actors reveal his working process. A trailblazing essay by Curator of Contemporary Art Nancy Spector charts Barney's work from the 1990s to the present and provides critical insights into the aesthetic vocabulary of his five Cremaster films, while Neville Wakefield's "Cremaster Glossary" illuminates the films' most far-flung references with citations from sources as diverse as Freud's psychoanalytic studies, Mormon law and lore, and hardcore music fanzines. In addition to stills from the five films--including the final episode, Cremaster 3--the book features related sculptures, photographs, drawings, and storyboards. For anyone intrigued by the Wagner of contemporary art, this is an atlas to his enticingly hypnotic worlds. Barney himself collaborated on all aspects of this extraordinary publication, including the selection of over 700 images, most of them never before published.

Creamy.......2004-01-29
Thick. Rich. Gooey. That's not only a desciption of Mr. Barney's exhibitions covered in petroleum jelly, it' also describes what you'll feel after reading this book.
The amount of detail missing from Mr. Barney's exhibitions is present here. This is a must have for any Barney fan, or serious art critic.

Movie Magic.......2004-06-14
In Attack of the Killer Video Book, Mark Shulman and Hazlitt Krog, two veteran American filmmaker/writers who specialize in young people's film and video production, provide everything young people need to know to create their own masterpieces on video. Illustrated by artist Martha Newbigging's cartoons, the book stands out for a number of reasons, particularly the authors' ability to walk that fine line between making filmmaking seem "cool" to young readers while at the same time dispensing the kind of practical technical advice they need.
Shulman and Krog cover every imaginable aspect of moviemaking, including scriptwriting, choosing locations and costumes, shooting, and editing footage. What's more, they go beyond the technical details of production, providing excellent instructional material that teaches young readers how to brainstorm potential story ideas and how to promote their work and organize a premiere screening. Readers will benefit by the outstanding organization of the text into step-bystep thematic chunks - including assembling a production team, instructions for directors, handling and operating a camera - while at the same time enjoying the high-energy prose and lively illustrations.
Adults will value the book's underlying can-do theme, which shows how young people can create something of lasting value on their own while learning important lessons about creativity, team-building and seeing a big project through to completion. As a writer and organizer of film discussion groups for kids, this book is highly recommended.

Book Description
The fourth in a highly successful series, this book looks at the breadth of special effects and manipulations achievable using digital technology. It is project-driven and aims to show all the processes visually and simply, allowing the digital photographer to follow the manipulations step by step with jargon-free text. Images are dealt with in four logical sections: Shoot It, Scan It, Manipulate It, and Print It.
This book answers the question "why digital?" addressing the advantages of digital versus traditional photography. It also features real-life projects, illustrating how to use digital technology to its fullest capacity.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Start...at least it would have been.......2006-08-03
It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time when the three Cliffhanger series - Danger Girl, Crimson, and Battle Chasers - ruled the comics world. The creators behind these three eagerly anticipated and heavily promoted series took the world by storm much the same way the founding Image creators did half a decade earlier.
Battle Chasers was the product of Joe Madureira's vivid imagination. Madureira was coming of a high profile run on Uncanny X-Men, and wanted to focus on a sword and sorcery fantasy epic. The result was Battle Chasers. Like the Image creators before him, Madureira's focus was on artwork over story. Battle Chasers essentially took the staples of fantasy, anime, and video games - the reluctant swordsman, a young child who inherits great power, a cantankerous old wizard, a giant robot, and a very well-endowed female mercenary - and throws them in a story straight out of a Dungeons & Dragons game. It's not particularly innovative, but it was certainly a lot of fun.
Madureira's artwork is naturally what steals the show. He obviously has a love of anime and video games, which comes across in his fantastic character designs and action sequences. Everything is vivid and full of energy, which makes it easier to look past the relatively basic storyline.
Battle Chasers: A Gathering of Heroes collects Battle Chasers issues 1-5 as well as the Battle Chasers Preview and a Battle Chasers short story that ran in an issue of Frank Frazetta Fantasy Illustrated magazine. The collection is a great introduction to the series.
Unfortunately it's also just about all we'd ever see of Battle Chasers. For whatever reason, Madureira was unable (unwilling?) to continue the series past issue 9, and aside from a few covers would pretty much disappear from comics completely. This is disappointing to say the least. Fans bought into this series and Madureira's obvious enthusiasm for the characters. I think we deserve better than his abandoning the story and the readers in such a manner.
i have to agree with okayplaya (canada).......2005-10-06
this is by far joe mad's worst books. not that i can draw like him or anything, i mean his art is great and i am sure that people around the world loves him as much as i do but as far as the story goes...BLECH...
KNOLAN (the wizard) - Kamesenin from Dragon Ball.
CALIBRETTO (sp?) - clearly this is from the anime GIANT ROBO. you guys should just watch GIANT ROBO
all right mad..keep up the good work (i hope) and welcome back to MARVEL i hope you'll do something different this time.
PEACE
Okayplaya knows nothing!!!!.......2005-05-13
First off this book is not a rip off of manga, anima or games. He has no idea what he is talking about. Garrison is not a Cloud rip off. If he takes after anything its Gutts from Berserk. Knolan is the typical old wizard everyone has come to expect adn Calibretto is just a big robot that was outlawed. This comic is not a rip off. Go somewhere else and talk to someone how knows manga and anima facts first because Kenshin simply vowed not to kill again not use a sword. This comic is not the best there is but its worth considering. Thanks.
Good Art, No Story.......2004-09-11
Any one who are familiar with comic books know of Joe Madureira. The man was able to fuse the two styles of Japanese Manga and American Comics and created something no one in the industry had seen. But in Battlechasers, Joe isnt fusing anything, he's clearly copying. It feels like he's tracing the past work of other creative geniuses and passing them as his own.
Joe's got a cute little girl (Gully) who weilds a big arm that makes her incredibly strong, I'm not even going to give an example of what he's biting here, cause you can look at various mangas and in some way, shape, or form, you will find a character like that.
Joe's also got a big brooding warrior (Garrison) that carries a big sword. This character is Joe's version of Cloud from Final Fantasy 7. The character is even sworn not to pick up a sword to fight because of the death of his wife, cmon, he's bit that off Rurouni Kenshin, and the worst part, the character picks up that sword so quickly, there isnt even a struggle in which he contiplated on whether to break the promise.
And of course you cant forget about the obligatory wizard (Forgot his name), the wizard is smart and he's got a long beard, the wizard even rides around a nimbus cloud like Goku from Dragon Ball, nuff said.
And the robot (Bretto), that is outlawed. If you ever played the original Wild Arms game for the Playstation, you will know that there's a robot there that's also outlawed and that he's the only one that exists in that world.
See, Madureira is a great artist, but when it comes down to the story, he only stole his ideas from everything else (manga, anime, video games). And there is like 5 sentences in every pace. The man doesnt even describe the world he created because we should already know, cause he stole it from everything else we know.
I'm Out!
Best comic ever?.......2002-12-03
No, but it's coming damn close. If it wouldn't be released so irregularly, it could have been. Still, this is a must-read.
Joe Mad's drawings are great and are heavily influenced by Japanase drawing styles (and since I like manga and anime, that's great) but still don't become one of the masses because they are kinda different. The inking is WONDERFUL, thanks to the inker-with-the-funny-name. The story is great (so far) and a must for any fantasy fan.

Customer Reviews:
EXCEPTIONAL PLAY AND GREAT SCORE.......2007-02-04
Written in the 40's by the relatively unknown team of Learner and Loewe, this score has it all... passionate love songs, great dances, comic lyrics and a style that captures the scotish sound and blends it with popular american style.
Performed in High Schools, community theatres, revived on Broadway and a successful Gene Kelley, Cyd Cherise movie... this is an enduring love story.
The score is interesting and intricate... even in piano reduction.
