A thorough and sumptuously illustrated appraisal of every one of Hans Memling's portraits.

Published to accompany a major international touring exhibition, this catalogue provides a lavish overview of Memling's successful career in portraiture, with a selection of some thirty portraits by the master and his school, including portrait-wings from diptychs and triptychs along with autonomous panels of individual patrons.

Each of the three venues—the Museo Thyssen- Bornemisza, Madrid, the Groeningemuseum, Bruges, and The Frick Collection, New York—has contributed paintings unique to its collection, and all the works are reproduced here. The selection illustrates topics of particular relevance to Memling's work: the exchange of influences with contemporary portraiture from Italy to Germany; issues of patronage relating to donor-portraits; and the role of the workshop in artistic production.

Four essays by Till-Holger Borchert, Lorne Campbell, Paula Nuttal, and Maryan Ainsworth introduce the book's superb reproductions, which are accompanied by detailed captions that shed new light on Memling's techniques and aims. 170 illustrations, 120 in color.

An Outstanding Monograph on the Art of Hans Memling.......2005-11-09

Thought to be a pupil of the more famous Roger van der Weyden, Hans Memling was born in Seligenstadt (now Frankfurt am Main) in 1435 and flourished in his time as one of the great Flemish or Northern Renaissance painters. He died in Bruges in 1494. Though Memling painted in all the usual forms of his day - altarpieces, works for cathedrals and hospitals - he was a master of portraiture, painting faces with meticulous detail, suggesting the character of each sitter, and each glowing with life. His 'Portrait of a Man' is one of his most recognizable works, a young man in black cloak and hat sharing a gold medallion/coin with the viewer. In other portraits of old women we see the human side of the cloistered Renaissance woman.

The truly remarkable aspect of Memling's career is the vast output of works that are familiar images to us all but without the immediate name reference enjoyed by the more famous artists, This fine book, a catalogue for a traveling exhibition among the Museo Thyssen- Bornemisza, Madrid, the Groeningemuseum, Bruges, and The Frick Collection, New York, focuses solely on the portraits and in doing so allows our eyes to grow into the recognizable techniques and repeated forms that mark Memling's art. The commentary by Till-Holger Borchert, Lorne Campbell, Paula Nuttal, and Maryan Ainsworth goes far beyond the usual dry artspeak found too often in catalogues of Renaissance art and draws the reader into a deep appreciation for the extraordinary art of Hans Memling. I have read the first couple, but not 3-5, so it seems this has gotten quite a bit more complicated.

There are now apparently two Death Notes around, and Light doesn't remember having one, and is actually working with L to catch yet another user of one of the Death Notes.

A girl is the other user in the past, and she is also involved with the hunting down effort, as well.

With no progress happening on the case, L recruits Misa into the investigation as an undercover agent-- the consequences of which could be devastating, as we found out late in the last volume that the current Kira has Misa's old death note-- and we know how Rem feels about Misa, don't we? Interesting things are afoot, and the series is really picking up steam again. *** ½

this is a very good continuation of the deathnote series containing plenty of suspense and mystery. it sets up the next book prefectly with yet another clif hanger ending that the series uses so well. i would definately recomend this book to anyone that has followed the series; if you are thinking about jumping into the sereies i would suggest starting at the first book because it would be a real spoiler to read it out of order.

WHICH ONE IS KIRA?.......2006-07-26

Somebody in the Yotsuba corporation is killing off the company's business rivals and L, Light, and the few remaining detectives have figured out that someone in Yotsuba is Kira. The problem is figuring out who it is. If they try to move in on the group of seven suspects, then Kira might go into hiding or pass on his power to someone else. No, L MUST know how Kira kills before he is arrested. Misa is sent undercover with a coverstory that she was once suspected of being the second Kira and that she wants to meet Kira because he killed the murderer of her parents and wants to thank him. Something unexpected happens when Rem, Misa's ex-Shinigami touches her with a piece of Death Note, making her visible to Misa and reveals the truth about Light and herself as the first two Kiras and the identity of the new Kira! Now Misa will have to use all her acting skills to not upset Light's plans or reveal her newfound knowledge to L AND keep herself from getting killed at the same time!

Death Note is really starting to get good now. You'll pretty much find yourself sitting down and reading the whole book in one take and wanting more. One of the most interesting aspects of this volume and the previous one is to see Light playing the good guy, and perhaps he IS a good guy. I mean, would the killing of vicious criminals really be a bad thing? Everybody would probably have a different answer to that one, based on their own life experiences. Death Note is also great because over these six volumes you really get to know the characters because there isn't a ton of action. Most of it is characterization and mental chess playing, which is a welcome break from most Hollywood-type entertainment in this day and age. Death Note is a good read.

Another, in the long list of wonderful Irish Joke Books.I have many of them and am never disappointed in any of them. Hal Roach, one of the world's greatest joke and storytellers, has been my favorite both in live performances and through his recordings.The jokes in this little book are just the type that he tells.One of his sayings is "We Irish know how to laugh at ourselves".With the possible exception of the Jewish people,I find it hard to think of any nationality that is better at it. It takes real maturity and self confidence for a people to do this.
I have a Korean friend, who I often tell jokes to,and he gets a great laugh from them.I once asked him to tell me a few Korean jokes,thinking he must know many. His reply was "When you live in Korea,nothing's funny." He was serious,I broke out laughing,then he started laughing too. "Yeah,that's funny,ha ha.!; he said. "Maybe that's a Korean Joke."
When you read or listen to Irish Jokes,there's no doubt about their humor.
I can't imagine any country in the world that has produced as much humor,amongst many other things,per person or per square mile than has Ireland.There has to be a million songs and many times a million jokes and stories.
In this little book Des MacHale gives us just a few to lighten our day.

Some of my favorites here are;

"How do you make a Kerry cocktail? Take a half glass of wisky and add
to it another half glass of wisky."

An Irish Toast

"Saint Patrick was a gentleman,
Who,thro' strategy and health,
Drove all the snakes from Ireland--
Here's a bumper to his health.

"An Englishman and an Irishman were sharing a railway carriage and the Englishman had with him a large dog.
"What sort of dog is that?" asked the Irishman.

Then there are those Irish jokes that really get to the heart of how good and helpful the Irish are at explaining things.

"There was a tourist in a little Sligo village who noticed that the two clocks on the church tower showed different times.
He asked a local to explain.
"Look," said the Sligoman, "if both clocks showed the same time,we would need only one clock."

And finally,there was the Irishman who was a contestant on MASTERMIND. He chose as his special subject "Polish Popes of the twentieth century.

This book represents a first effort to systematically describe the experience of immigrant women in the U.S. labor market over the past thirty years. It may come as a surprise that the United States is currently home to more immigrant women than immigrant men. However, until this study was conducted, the attention of analysts and policymakers has focused solely on the labor performance of immigrant men. Georges Vernez's analysis of immigrant women's experience is the first to break this trend, revealing a complex story that resists easy interpretation. Some immigrant women succeed beyond all expectations, while others struggle all their lives and have little to show for it. In examining the myriad factors that contribute to the success and failure of immigrant women in the U.S. workforce, this book provides a profile of their changing origin and characteristics; describes what they do, where they work, and how they fare in the U.S. labor market; and looks at the use they make of public services to support themselves.

Working Immigrant Women Quantified!.......2003-05-23

This books uses census figures and other sociological numbers to evaluate the status of immigrant women in the American employment arena. This book carefully peels the onion asking not just if immigrant women work, but where, why, for how long, and for how much.

I did not know where on the political spectrum the RAND Foundation lied, so I was very worried that this would be a horridly xenophobic and racist text. However, this book is refreshingly objective, though you could guess that the researcher has a progressive perspective.

This was a very important intersectional text. I hope that policy makers, feminists, and immigration activists read it. This book shatters myths about immigrants. First off, throughout most of American history, immigrants have been predominantly female, unlike common misperceptions would have it. On the one hand, myths that immigrant women steal jobs is untrue: they replace older workers and other Americans who don't want certain jobs. On the other hand, most female immigrants are not self-employed: the idea that all immigrants are energetic, self-starters is false.

This book is thin. However, you must read slowly in order not to misread the facts. About one-third of this book consists of statistical charts, but everyday readers should not be scared by this. The researcher repeats himself often. I loved the introductory chapter about the history of women and American immigration. The penultimate chapter on whether immigrant women utilize social services was important, but kinda broke the flow of the text.

The fact that the title asks questions (note the plural) "Who Struggles? Who Succeeds?" is an important statement to how diversity is respected. Different demographics about immigrant women are brought up when necessary. This book states that Pilipinas are doing incredibly well. This surprised me because many Asian-American studies books refer to them as the "Forgotten Asians" in comparison with other groups. Still, this book illustrated the intense difficulties of Chicanas; Latino immigration activists should find these numbers especially helpful in their work. Now that 75% of all immigrants are from outside of Europe, race is important but not the be all to end all. It was emphasized without being overemphasized. This may make some people less afraid to approach the work. The author separates "immigrant women" from "native-born women", so those in the "1.5 generation", who were born abroad but almost entirely raised here, may feel falsely represented. Additionally, this book compares native and foreign woman more than it does foreign women and men. Please be aware.

I found this book by accident, but I am pleased that I did.
