As a reader of large-print books, I adore Kathy Weaver's puzzles. I never have to dig out my magnifying glass. And the pages of this book do not fall out the way her other book did.

Weaver is my fav art puzzle maker because I love the logic challenges, but I do NOT like counting 50 squares or more. Some folks love it, but it's just a chore for me. I like Weaver's pics because they are cute and imaginative and they don't go over 30 squares. I hope she comes up with another book soon, I'll buy it!

Not Mindbending.......2007-03-09

This was an okay book, but more aimed toward the beginner or kids. I started doing the puzzles about half way through the book hoping to get into some harder ones. That never happened. Even the ones at the very end of the book were pretty easy. Nothing remotely close to mindbending.

I can recommend everybody who likes this kind of puzzles. I am a big fan of this puzzles and it is pretty difficult to find a good paint by number puzzles in this country. I really enjoy with this book. I hope she will come out with a new paint by number book and also add colourful puzzles too.

Good Introductory Puzzles.......2007-01-07

I've been doing this type of puzzle for a few years now, at least 1 a day during lunch or before bed. I'd say this book is well done, with quality heavy paper and ink, and the puzzles have been checked to make sure they are solvable.

There are some drawbacks:
The binding fell apart pretty quickly. Also, the puzzles are very easy...so this is really good for beginners, not for experts. The book walks you through solving technique, then puzzles start out small and get larger as you progress.

Overall, it's a good buy if you are a novice and are gentle on your things.

WOW! I've lost sleep over these puzzles!.......2006-10-18

This book is great and ADDICTIVE! I can't do enough of them and should have gone to bed, but went on to the next puzzle instead. The paper is of high quality, however, a previous reviewer was correct about the binding. It split after only 3 or 4 puzzles and I like to keep my work all together. I wish the answers were tear out or separate so that someone can't come along and "spoil it" for you. It would also be nice if so many of the answers weren't on the same page in case you need to take a look at one puzzle and that way you could keep the element of surprise of the next puzzles you work on.
All in all, Kathy Weaver has done an exceptional job! I've put her next book for sure on my wish list! Kudos!

Simple puzzle fun.......2005-08-24

I love these type of puzzles (aka Picross, Paint By Numbers, Nonograms, Griddlers, etc). This collection will please fans of these puzzle types- the paper stock is a good heft (similar to the "Paint By Numbers" release by Games Magazine so you won't be scratching holes though the pages.
The book offers a brief introduction & sample puzzle. From there it's puzzle after puzzle. If you love these puzzles, you can't go wrong with this book.

one of most interesting book about Fischer........2005-01-31

I have 4 or 5 books about Fischer, but this one is different. It shows Fischer, the person. Seven contributors recalled their personal contacts with Fischer. Their encounters were first-hand, so their stories are truer. There are no deep chess analyses in this book, however they are the important games during Fischer's career. This is no problem, because I can find the analyses in other books or magazines, or even from chess programs. The interviews, stories, experience, observation that the authors shared enlighten me many points about Fischer. He is incredible, demanding bunch of money to play the championship with Spassky; then rejecting more money when having to defend his title. He turned down large sum of money when asked to write a book about the match. How could he rack up long strings of wins without allowing a single draw along? And these games were against the GMs. This book also has many good pictures along his exciting career. A nice article written by Unzicker near the end showed how fairly Fischer treated chess-fellows. This book could a short historical document illustrating the rise and fall of a chess titan.

If you've ever read the magazine "Pulp", a collection of manga stories from various artists and writers, these are one of the pieces that deliver quite a punch in several very small packages. Masahiko Kikuni creates a 4 sectioned comic strip depicting the lives of characters relating to Japanese culture. Whether it be sexual romps, or the decisions made in desperate situations, this book will keep you laughing for weeks on end. If your wondering, all the pictures are in black and white, and if you take off the dust cover of the book, it has some really funny artwork.

NIck Middleton as usual delivers the goods. He carries on where he left off delivering a humorous account of the current EEC. His political and economic insight to the region is witty and informative, but as usual he writes with a subtle sarcasm, never shying away from providing the reader with an informative view of the European continent. I would also thoroughly recommend trying to get hold of his earlier work "Last Disco in Outer Mongolia".

Strangely inspiring.......2007-03-18

This book is a masterpiece of both style and content, and one of the very best rock biographies in existence. It explores the life of Nico after the Velvet Underground, covering her life in London and tours in Europe and the USA.

I found myself devouring the text in utter fascination. It includes descriptions of bizarre performances, wild parties, weird tour experiences, eccentric characters like her one-time manager Dr Demetrius, encounters with luminaries like John Cale, a visit to the motel where Tom Waits used to stay and much much more.

One of the funniest parts is the narrative of Nico's first experience with angel dust in Los Angeles. Underneath the humor there is a lot of sadness too but it is a strangely inspiring read. Songs They Never Play On The Radio certainly transcends the genre of rock writing. You don't have to be a fan of Velvet Underground to enjoy this classic work, as it stands on its own feet.

I became aware of this book through Young's appearance in the "Nico Icon" documentary. The book is well-written, dry and dark but not without compassion.

The best book about Korean society during the 1970s-90s.......2004-01-30

In their book 'Empire', Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri talked about the 1996-7 workers' general strike in Seoul, South Korea as one of the historical events against Empire.

Koo's book about working-class formation in Korea shows and analyzes how progressive and sometiems militant working-class movement of a large scale has been possible and grown up as a major political force in one of the East Asian countires which often have been well known for their docility of labor forces under conservative political rule.

This book has several merits:

1) it shows the process of working-class formation in the context of contemporary Korean development. Many books about Korean development have been written mainly in an economistic way. This book reveals people's lives and voices more realistically in the historical process.

2) while describing the historical process, Koo also tries to put his arguments on the theoretical base of weorking-class formation, especially E. P. Thompson. I think his way of doing this is very successful in this book.

3) Many books about working-class formation are mainly about the histories in the European context or Latin America. This book shows uniquely how the process has happened in the context of East Asian development.

His book is not only describing but also theoretical and analytical. And his book does not lose both academic rigidity as well as sympathy for workers' movement for social progress. With in-depth interviews of labor movement activists and the use of many domestic materials, Koo also could escape superficial observations and dry abstraction.

Why has the labor movement in the United States been so weak and politically conservative in comparison to movements in Western Europe? Kim Voss rejects traditional interpretations--theories of "American exceptionalism"--which attribute this distinctiveness to inherent characteristics of American society. On the contrary, she demonstrates, the American labor movement had much in common with its English and French counterparts for most of the nineteenth century. Only with the collapse of the Knights of Labor, the largest American labor organization of the century, did the U.S. movement take a different path.

A new theory of American Exceptionalism.......2000-07-07

As noted in the book description, the author offers a new theory of the development of America's distinctly conservative labor movement. The book admerably combines historical case studies and a statistical review of the formation and collapse of Knights of Labor locals in the New Jersey. Both of these methods reject a view that America was somehow fundimentally different than Europe (France and England are used for comparison) prior to the collapse of the KoL. Further, she does not find evidence for the typical explinations of the Knights' failure such as craft conservatism, ethnic diversity, industrial diversity and middle class influence. Rather, she finds that the main cause of the Knights' decline was employer opposition, which she found to be much more profound than in ENgland or France, coupled with the lack of an activist government. These conclusions are well supported by her evidence, however, her most interesting assertion is also the least well argued. She points out that even strong employer intransigence cannot fully explain the fall of the Knights, as both English and French unions suffered significant numnerical setbacks in this period. However, those unions rebounded and the Knights did not. The author argues that the Knights' ideology cast the blame for their failures fully onto their own organizations, which left little ideological space for recovery. This argument, with its emphasis on the from of organizational conciousness is provocotive, but requires additional supporting evidence. Overall, an important and thoughtful book on a long standing topic in American Labor History. And for those who don't with to slog through the statistical analysis, parts one and three provide a thoughrow introdustion, overview and conclusion.

If you are interested in a clear, easy to read, ethnographic study, then this is a good example. This book exposes the rampant racial and sexual discrimination that is so rampant in France in a refreshingly honest way. Raissiquier does not deny that her position as a women of priveledge (white, French educated) informs her hypotheses, methods, and conclusion. Instead, she stresses the role that her background affects the lens through which she views the context. The story, which supposedly follows two Algerian women, never actually fulfils that purpose and spreads itself too thin at times. Overall, this strong effort is an enjoyable, although certainly not indispensable, read.
