Seizing the Photographic Light.......2006-03-24

Overall a great book on the history of photography. VERY comprehensive overview of the evolution of photography. It ties movements in art and social events into photography trends and developments. It also provides insight into how photographers and artists used the medium to express themselves and how experimentation lead to improvements over the years. My only negative comment would be that some of the earlly forms of cameras were not pictured. There were diagrams of early cameras, but after the first hundred years, there is little to no documentation on how they evolved cosmetically/ functionally. It'd be nice to see an example of the various "groundbreaking" cameras as they were discussed. Otherwise, a great book.

The Persistence of Fine Books.......2005-12-30

For everyone with an interest in photography, either as an artist of the medium, a beginner looking for direction, or a collector who wants informed background to enhance appreciation of fine photographs both from the past and from the present obsession, SEIZING THE LIGHT: A History of Photography is essential reading.

Robert Hirsch knows his subject and in one hefty book manages to share the beginnings of photography some 200 years ago with the evolution of the camera and the discipline of photographing. Well illustrated with both photographs and drawings, Hirsch chronicles the famous and not so famous practitioners of the art in succinct but richly colorful biographical abstracts to accompany examples of each artist. The phases through which this art form has passed makes for fascinating reading even beyond the scope of the title: the use of the camera in documenting the history of our globe at celebration, at war, at discovery, and at the side of the people of the day is a journey well lead by a writer well skilled.

Though this book is now six years old it remains one of the more important textbooks for the art school classroom. But more important it is so richly written that it remains a fascinating survey of life since the camera. From the beginnings of the pinhole box to the present day digital images on the cell phone etc, the invention of the camera has inextricably changed our perception of the world. Seizing the Light: A History of Photography. is a wonderfully broad, contemporary, eclectic and entertaining book. Robert Hirsch has produced the most useful, readable, and practical successor to Beaumont Newhall's classic, The History of Photography, first published in 1937. Seizing the Light is written in a friendly, accessible way -- dense with information, but more hip and lively than other offerings, especially those aimed at college students. Hirsch includes the "canon" of standard western photographic history (represented by Stieglitz, Weston, Adams, White, et. al.) first set forth by Newhall and other researchers, but updates the information with special emphasis on the last five decades of photographic practice, including digital imaging.

Many teachers and interested readers will greatly appreciate Hirsch's conscious effort throughout the book, to include numerous women and photographers from other cultures. (Chapter Two opens with an image of an American Indian, and includes a portrait of an African-American, affording students the realization that marginalized groups actually did appear as subjects before the camera in addition to working behind them.)

Students will also appreciate Hirsch's habit of opening new chapters with a description of cultural and political events occurring during the period under discussion: Chapter Twelve starts with a harrowing description of life for immigrants in New York City in the late Nineteenth Century during the time of Jacob Riis, and Chapter Seventeen has a helpful summary of the ending of the Vietnam War, connecting it smoothly to such diverse influences as Richard Nixon and the BeeGees! There are also wonderful endnotes following each chapter that are absolutely addictive, giving curious readers further information and surprising tidbits of information.

Hirsch's knowledge gained as a Director of CEPA Gallery in Buffalo (a contemporary non-profit Artist's space) provides him with exceptional insight into contemporary photography. This is especially evident in his last Chapter, Eighteen, "Thinking About Photography," which abounds with infrequently seen and challenging images by Arnulf Rainer, Nam June Paik, John Baldessari, Anselm Keifer, Gilbert and George, William Wegman and the Bechers. There is a clear and helpful section on Postmodernism, including the usual suspects: Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, and Victor Burgin. There are sections on "Gender Issues" with Judith Golden, as well as one on "Fabrications" with Sandy Skoglund, Olivia Parker, Joel Peter Witkin and others. "Altering Time and Space" includes David Hockney, the Starn Twins, and the delicious hand-colored work of Holly Roberts. Other sections include "Investigating the Body" (Andres Serrrano, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann) and "Multiculturalism" (Clarissa Sligh, Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, and the Guerilla Girls). Hirsch closes this bulging chapter with a discussion of digital imaging, including images by Pedro Meyer, Nancy Burson and several rising young artists in new media. He concludes with an extensive bibliography of related books and resources, a helpful list of monographs by the major artists presented throughout the text, and a section on sources for artists' books.

Robert Hirsch has produced a most impressive and useful book that readers will find engaging and relevant. The currency and eclectic nature of Hirsch's thought is fascinating and his book serves as a much-needed supplement to existing texts in the history of photography.

A Big World.......2005-06-23

I found a lot to enjoy in Poul Anderson's WORLD WITHOUT STARS. So much, in fact, that it made me wish I'd explored his books earlier. This is my first exposure to Anderson and I'm very impressed by his abilities as a storyteller and as a world-builder.

At first glance (and looking through the first few chapters), WORLD would appear to be a fairly standard pulp science-fiction novel, with bold humans seeking out new life forms on a strange new world where no human has gone before. But as you get further along, the story never quite goes where it's expected. There are a lot of surprises hidden in here.

The book contains loads of those neat little science fiction ideas that one expects from this type of book: human immortality, telepathic aliens, future cultural changes, etc. But what I really enjoyed in addition to the ideas (and the repercussions they have on life in the future) was Anderson's presentation style. He doesn't simply provide huge information-dumps where every aspect of some space-age development is dryly recited. Rather the clues are dropped quite subtly. On more than one occasion, I flipped back in the book to reread an earlier passage in the light of a later revelation. It's a very rewarding read if you like that sort of thing (as I do).

The plot is relatively straightforward; a group of humans is marooned on a seemingly primitive planet and must contend with strange cultures of aliens who regard these invaders with suspicion (and not for the usual reasons). However, the plot is secondary to the tour-de-force of the character of Hugh Valland who provides the book with its emotional core. He's a fascinating character, and, while bordering on cliché at times, he's entirely memorable and single-handedly brings the book to life. His back-story, slowly revealed through the novel, is what gives the novel its weight.

The back cover blurb of the Ace edition I own gives away far too much of the plot, and I recommend not reading it if you can possibly resist the temptation. This is a short book (the paperback ends at exactly the 150 page mark), but it packs quite a punch. The Valland character and the neat ideas running throughout give this book a depth that belies its size. I'll be looking out for more Poul Anderson books in the future.

A solid work from Anderson's early days.......2002-07-24

I remember reading this book many years ago, yet many details remain fresh in my memory. This book deals with the middle years of human expansion into our galaxy, at a point in the far future when Humans have become almost immortal. Emphasis on the almost.

Mr. Anderson explores the idea of the limits of immortality, the social effects this would have on both civilizations ("ultimate hospitality",shipwives) and individual relationships (an immortal love), and the way in which a group of immortals view the passage of time. I was awed by the way the immortals viewed disaster much differently than we would.

A lot of ideas are packed into this short book.

Highly recommended.

Excellent Short Novel.......1998-04-09

Having loved the Harvest of Stars series, this was my first trip back in time to one of Anderson's more common shorter works. I was delighted. It reminded me of an excellent Roald Dahl short story, which is surprising. It is told in the first person, and is a fairly exciting story. What is really remarkable is the writing; the story is so well told. There is even some thought-provoking discovery. All this is and two good characters (one excellent) are fit masterfully into less than 150 pages. The ending is fitting and Anderson pulls it off perfectly - (and be careful not to glance around when flipping to the end to see how many pages there are). I can think of no compelling reason whatsoever not to read this book. For those of you searching, my version is an old Ace. Find it.

My 50 years is an entertaining, candid and very funny insight into the Hollywood that most do not hear about. The author's quirky stories make for a very fun, fast read that will have you smiling and laughing along the way. In addition, the author's juxtaposition of the old Hollywood 50 years ago versus the Hollywood of today augments the protagonist's growth and maturing process throughout the book. I expected My 50 Years in Hollywood to be yet another book about Hollywood but it ended up being one of the most refreshing take on the subject I have read in years. I am naturally drawn to books about LA because I live here, but I recommend this book to anyone, no matter where they live. The story is told through the eyes of 22 year old industry fledgling, Rachel Reiss. Her mentor, Al Burton, a famous Hollywood producer. Vignette after vignette, Reiss takes you on rides that make you laugh, think, and cry. This book is good for those in the know and that want to be in the know about Hollywood and the industry. I loved reading this book.

An amusing and tender inside look at Hollywood.......2004-10-27

"My 50 Years in Hollywood: the Story of a 22-year-old" is a coy and endearing look at the oddities of life in LaLa Land. One can only assume that the story is partly autobiographical, which makes the myriad fables more appealing in their realism - like when the protagonist climbs up a lamppost to retrieve parts of a precious script for her boss. The book also exposes a less cynical side of Hollywood through a caring and experienced mentor and a thoughtful (although slightly oafish) boyfriend. "My Fifty Years" is a quick and amusing read that will have you chuckling all the way though.

When I first saw the title "My 50 Years in Hollywood" I thought this book was going to be a true insider's view of the underbelly of Hollywood - what I got was that and so much more. The story, or stories rather (the book is a series of vignettes), is told through the wide eyes of a fresh-faced 22 year old woman, just out of college and thrust into the sometimes intense, sometimes wacky and always fascinating world of Al Burton, one of television's legendary producers. "Elvis & You", A comprehensive book like this deserves just a short review as it contains within it vast scope it's own recommendation. Elvis fans will be delighted with it's in-depth research, and the less scholastic will enjoy the eccentric humorous nature of the book as a whole. A work to explore at leisure and delve into for those important links to all things Elvis. A bargain for the photos alone!

As a discerning fan of the late Elvis Presley since 1957 yours truly has read a library of Elvis books-this one is amongst the very best.

Don't go to Memphis without this book........2002-04-15

I finally got my hands on a copy of this amazing book. It has lived up to everything I've heard about it from my fellow Elvis fans. First of all it's huge. It's 626 oversized pages of nothing but Elvis. It has over 500 photos ( I stopped counting at 500). Many of the photos were completly new to me. If you were from another planet and didn't know anything about Elvis this book would bring you up to speed. I predict this book will become "the bible" of Elvis fans all over the world.

The book is divided into 33 chapters. Each chapter focuses on one aspect of Elvis and his fans. Some of the chapter titles: Elvis music, Elvis and family, Elvis and the Army, Elvis and romance, Elvis and the martial arts, Elvis and food, Elvis impersonators, Elvis and animals, Elvis in person, Collecting Elvis, Elvis in cyberspace - It's sort of a "how to" book on being an Elvis Fan. It's like a Peter Guralnick book with a sense of humor and a lot more photos.

Not only does it tell you everything you want to know about Elvis himself, it tells you about what has emerged in the 25 years since he's been gone. At the end of every chapter is a section called " The Elvis and You Experience." This is where the author's suggest things to do to enhance your enjoyment of Elvis. The suggestions are a lot of fun. Some are really silly. Just like Elvis!

My favorite chapter is "The Pilgrimage". It lists all the important places to see in Memphis during tribute week. A lot of stuff only Elvis insiders know. I'm studying up to get ready for Tribute week 2002. If you're going to the 25th anniversary Elvis week in Memphis this August. I have one thing to say about this book. Don't leave home without it!

Probably because the book is this massive it is printed on very thin paper. Especially because this guide will function as a reference book often, this is a pity. We bet there will be only a few in perfect condition after a couple of weeks. Also a lot of the pictures used in the book deserve more than the exposure they get now, also due to the poor paper-quality. On the other hand: this work on quality paper might hardly be affordable for a lot of people, so the choice is understandable. Let's see if the content is good enough to hope for a "deluxe version" someday.As we always do with new books, we thumbed through it looking for new pictures. On first sight it looked a little complex, with a lot of repeats, we thought. Well, we weren't completely wrong about that, but starting from the beginning we soon found out it has a reason, and a well considered one. All chapters are build in the same way: a more or less short essay about the subject, facts ("Essential Elvisology"), references ("Your Elvis Education") and tips how to enrich your own experiences regarding the subject ("The Elvis And You Experience"). This consistent design makes it pretty easy to find what you want, most of the time. Unfortunately there is no index to this guide, so when you are looking for something really specific... it can be a very hard job.During the acknowledgements it becomes clear that the book has "a heavy Internet base". The reader familiar with the Elvis-scene on the Internet will recognize a lot of the names. Of course this results in a lot of references to the Internet throughout the book.The book is split up in 33 chapters, starting with the man himself: a short biography, mainly a time-line of important dates, his death, his records, his movies, his TV-work, his shows and his personal interests. There are a couple of chapters that are devoted mainly to the fans: Collecting, The Pilgrimage, Your Elvis Shrine, Impersonators and such. As stated before, all chapters start with an essay. Those essays are very well written, and even though nothing new comes up, the point of view from the authors makes them very enjoyable. The guide part of these chapters is very good, directing the reader towards the more important available works. Because the Internet-addresses (the so-called URL's) are often very long and hardly readable, the references to the sites look pretty cluttered. A better solution would have been to list just the site-names, with an alphabetic overview including the URL's in the back of the book. Since this book has its own site (that is: they are constructing the site, so far it looks like they only registered the URL), it might be a nice idea to include all links used in the book on that site, if possible per chapter. Since the Internet is evolving constantly, this might be a good idea anyway. Before such a list returns from the printer it may be outdated already.In general we can say the Elvis part of the guide is reliable, there are some mistakes, but they are in every book it seems, and we didn't find real major misses. The "You"-part is often going towards the ridiculous, especially the chapters we mentioned before. This certainly doesn't mean you can easily skip them. Again, the essays are well written, including a lot of wit and the "tips" are often so ridiculous it gets really funny (e.g. the "Dos and Don'ts of Impersonation" and "How to get started impersonating"). Having met all kinds of people ourselves (especially on the Internet), we know it's not complete nonsense written in those chapters, but sometimes we can't help but think it's too crazy to be true. In opposition to the main media, that love to use those exceptions to stereotype the average Elvis fan, this book shows it in a light-hearted, funny way. Probably the poor souls suffering the "handicaps" in these chapters won't even recognize it and take it seriously, so they'll be happy too. Our conclusion is that this guide is really what it claims to be: "the guide to the pleasure of being an Elvis fan". Interesting, well researched and very enjoyable, thus it gave a lot of pleasure. We can only say that supported by a well maintained website it certainly deserves a "deluxe edition". "So now let's have a tremendous hand for a very nice book"

One of the most useful, fun and interesting Elvis books around. A must-have for Elvis fans and scholars because of the breadth and depth of its information. The photos are great as well. This book will be read and used for a long time. I only wish it had been around when I wrote my Elvis book - would have made my work much easier!
