The best books make us think, by showing relationships between realms we had not thought connected. Just so, Jacquelynn Baas breaks new ground in SMILE OF THE BUDDHA: EASTERN PHILOSOPHY AND WESTERN ART FROM MONET TO TODAY.

By exploring the influences of Asian thought in general and Buddhism in particular on European and American artists of the modern era, Baas takes her readers on a breathtaking leap across time and geography.

That she lands squarely on target is attested by art historians and scholars of Buddhism who have praised this book as "careful and intelligent," "thoughtful and richly detailed," "high spirited" and "a crucial contribution to modern art studies."

My own take, as a lay reader with no credentials in either art history or Asian thought, is that Baas, Director emeritus of the University of California Art Museum, has created a most unusual hybrid: a handsomely illustrated coffee table volume with a fascinating detective story woven among its color plates.

Like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, historical magnifying glass in hand, she investigates a bevy of mysteries. How was it that Taoist and Buddhist emphasis on change infiltrated European culture through, of all things, the English Romantic Garden? How did Buddhist philosophy appeal to artists including Monet, van Gogh, Gauguin? How did Asian aesthetic theory open a path to abstract painting for Georgia O'Keeffe? How did Buddhism influence Marcel Duchamp to imagine new connections between artist, viewer and object, helping change the very definition of "art"?

Bringing her story into the present, Baas sheds light on the role of Zen in the music and performance art of John Cage, Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono and Laurie Anderson.

Baas and her publisher, University of California Press, are to be congratulated on an important book that has something new to say, and says it well - in a manner sufficiently documented do pass muster with the experts, and approachable enough to keep the rest of us interested.

Though the simple illustrations and plain-terms instructions are readily accessible to young people, they are equally instructive to amateur adults seeking to hone their cartooning skills and learn how to create cartoon characters. Now in an enlarged and revised format with a foreward by Jim Davis, creator of "Garfield", Cartooning Basics covers how to get ideas for 'toons, common symbols, especial tips for expressions and facial features, showing distance, depth, and perspective, and much more, while the many, many illustrations demonstrate how all cartoons begin as a collection of simple shapes, from which details are elaborated. Highly recommended for practicing artistic techniques or just plain drawing fun.

What a great gift!.......2004-09-25

My seven year old daughter recieved this book as a gift and just loves it! She has never felt very comfortable in her artistic abilities and this book has provided her with the instruction she needed to build up her confidence. She practices with the book almost daily and now insists on making everyone's birthday cards using characters out of the book and ones she has created on her own. It was such a great gift that we now give it as a gift; along with a pad of drawing paper, a fun pencil and an eraser, it is always a big hit!

Duane Barnharts Cartooning Basics has just been so much fun for my kids ages 12, 10, and 7. Using the Books step-by-step guidelines to cartooning they have created some of the most fabulous characters and cartoon strips. Not only is it great from a drawing perspective, but it also has some fun and interesting facts about the history of cartooning. Love this book!!!

'Cartooning Basics' is a wonderful tool for young aspiring cartoonists. No. 2 illustrates how to create friendly, familiar characters from simple shapes, which every child can relate to (ie circles, ovals, squares, triangles, etc.). I found this book a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience, particularly when it mentioned the exploitation Berry Gordy put his own artists through, and the hit-factory system he created. If one wants to talk about 'exploitation' then one should look no further than Gordy himself.

I don't know what the boneheaded reader below was supposed to think this book was, but I found it too be fairly balanced and not subject to the all the racist hyperbole that he seems to be looking for.

an interesting book, more or less..........1999-05-15

I'm afraid Mr. Early does not wish to expand to any depth the problems which Black musical artists continue to face from this thorougly racist culture. To discover more pertinent investigations of this ongoing white male-centered racism, one needs to go to the astonishingly brave and insightful bell hooks, and other writers. I would also recommend a book by a white writer, Russell Potter, called 'Spectacular Vernaculars', where he writes about white racism perpetrated against Black musical artists.
