Book Description
A knife is the most basic tool, and the average adult uses a knife almost every day. Yet there are very few individually made knives in existence, and few people who know how to make knives.
Step by Step Knifemaking, by master knifemaker David Boye, is widely regarded as the classic on the art of handcrafted knives. Thorough, clear, detailed instructions guide the reader through each step in how to make a knife. Generously illustrated with photos and drawings on most pages, this book reads like a one-on-one workshop with a thoughtful teacher. The reader is led to discover the spiritual connection between himself and his work, develop his sense of artistry, and to acquire practical skills for self-sufficiency.
Completely self-taught, the author guides the beginning knifemaker through the thinking processes necessary to make a knife; inspires confidence in the reader to begin at his own skill level; and shows how it can be done on a financial shoestring.
Topics covered include tools, setting up a shop, knife design, grinding, heat treating, polishing, sharpening, blade etching, sheathmaking, and more. Boye's outdoor knives, kitchen cutlery, and utility knives are functional and "peace-loving," and the chapter on etching designs into the blades is a visual delight.
With over 150,000 copies in print, Step by Step Knifemaking has deeply moved thousands to involve themselves in this craft, and they constitute a visible portion of today's knifemakers. This book can impel the reader to a personally satisfying, alternative backyard career, making his own useful knife art. It is an enjoyable, indispensable reference for those wanting to learn knifemaking, become more self-reliant, or for anyone with an interest in the ancient craft of blades.
"Handmade knives are unique," writes David Boye, "reflecting the skills and personality of their maker. They impart a personal touch to what would be a cold, impersonal item. Thus it is with a handmade knife, or a handmade article of any kind, that there is a subtle exchange of electromagnetic energy that is transferred from the heart and the hands of the craftsman to the heart of the person who sees and uses the handmade article. Hopefully, the product will be the embodiment and expression of love and beauty in a useful, sanitary, and safe cutting tool - a hint of a deeper, more profound spirit in the process of living."

Step-by-Step Knifemaking: You Can Do It!.......2007-02-15
This is a great book for the beginner to someone who has built some knives
But needs help in refining their technique
This will be a great reference for years to come
Lovely designs, avoid his methods.......2006-02-06
This was the first book I bought on knifemaking, and my copy is falling apart (it's 28 years old!) I absolutely love David Boye's sense of design, and his work has inspired my own considerably. That said, I learned a great deal about knifemaking from other sources, and I use few of his methods. Specifically, I would never use a wheel grinder on knife steel, it generates a great deal more heat than a belt grinder, isn't nearly as accurate, and the cutting surface is smaller. I would NEVER cut out blades with a cutting torch, unless you wanted to grind away at least 1/4 in from the cut edge, you're messing up your steel's microstructure doing this (see p. 111 under grain growth!) I appreciate the lengths he's gone to to describe heat treating, but had little luck with it myself; I would strongly advise against trying to heat-treat complex steels like D2, 440C, or 154CM yourself, unless you like throwing your work away. Finally, though I absolutely love the acid etchwork in the book, the beeswax/asphaltum etching ground recommended here is a very tempermental one, I would use commercial etching ground if I were doing this. Since messing with aqua regia at home is not the safest thing, I'd suggest looking into some of the other methods, such as electrochemical etching. So, I would say to the beginning knifemaker that I'd use this book for inspiration, but go elsewhere for methods. If at all possible, talk to someone who's been doing it a while.
Excellent Book to begin knifesmithing.......2004-08-25
I got this book out of my local library and I can't wait to get started making a knife. I've recently ordered a copy for myself. It will be edgeworn soon. This book is an excellent place to start making knives for the beginner, since Boye uses recycled steel. His explanations and diagrams and photos of the process are invaluable for this endeavor. I only wish he wrote one on folding knives.
Stock removal knife making and etching........2000-05-06
This book primarily covers making knives (mostly kitchen knives) by starting with thin plates of steel (HUGE bandsaw blades), cutting out a knife blank, and shaping the knife by grinding it. I personally far prefer forging a blade, which this author does not even touch on.
However, Mr. Boye does offer solid knowledge on grinding, heat treating, attaching handles and bolsters (all necessary skills no matter how you make knives)... and an extensive section on acid etching which I have yet to find equalled in any other knifemaking book I've read.
So while I may not care for Mr. Boye's chosen method of production, I recognize his pure artistic ability and am gratefull for his willingness to share his hard won knowledge.
Best book for the novice........2000-04-02
If you are a novice in the knifecraft, this is THE book for you. It countains every little thing you need to know to design and construct your first knives - and advance in techniques and complexity, as you advance in the pages of this fascinating, amazing and honest book. For me, it was (and still is) a most usefull master, everytime I want, everywhere I need it. It'll be a very good friend & teacher to you, too.

really inspiring.......2005-12-14
I can't say enough about this book. It doesn't matter if you are experianced or have never touched a pastel before, everyone can gain something from this wonderful book. Not only does she lay out the different materials and papers, she touches on just about everything such as color theory, perspective and composition. This is so much more than just a book on pastels. Beyond all the useful info, the pictures are just so inspiring and beautiful to look at. If you only buy one pastel book, let it be this one.
Comprehensive and enjoyable.......2005-01-17
A practical and comprehensive instruction pastel workbook. Nicely laid out and easy on the eye too. The author has in mind the beginner who also needs encouragement to paint as well as adding ideas about creativity to the work not just frontal art instruction and just techniques. Definately a new generation of instruction where development of ideas, creativity, inspiration, confidence building, self assesment, demonstrations are all integrated. I also enjoyed looking at the examples used to instruct pastel painting and these were very varied giving a wide idea about what can be done with pastels. I really recomend this book for the beginner pastel artist as well as an art instructor who wants to develop an art workshop and needs some ideas. Jason Alster- author-

Book Description
Take Your Colored Pencils Out of the Box . . . and Combine the Best of All Mediums!
Creative Colored Pencil Workshop is your guide to exploring a new world of artistic possibilities. Following clear, step-by-step demonstrations, you'll try your hand at a range of exciting techniques that blend colored pencils with all kinds of dynamic mediums, including:
- Watercolor

- Acrylics
- Ink
- Graphite
- Oil pastels
- Metal leaf
More than 25 fun projects show you how to use each medium successfully, while offering in-depth guidance for working with various papers, textures and surfaces. Best of all, this book features the insightful instruction of two accomplished artists who offer different yet effective approaches to colored pencil creations.
From highly realistic art to more abstract representations, you'll learn how each medium and technique can accommodate virtually any artistic style or subject. Customer Reviews:
It is okay.......2007-08-03
It is okay. It has a lot in it but it has not given me what I wanted. I like the way Ann Kullberg illustrates her books. She doesn't have mixed media but with colored pencil in itself she makes it very visible in what to do. This book is a good book but not as exciting as some others.
Entering a competitive field.......2007-08-03
I was disappointed in this book for two reasons. Firstly the mixed media exercises use other mediums more as underpainting than as combinations with colored pencil to create new effects. By comparison, see Mary Todd Beam's demonstrations with colored pencil in mixed media in "Celebrate Your Creative Self." The results from Hershberger and Huff still look like colored pencil, not mixed media. In my view, this means it misses out as a mixed media book. How does it fare, then, as a colored pencil book?
I find the end results of the exercises in this book rather flat compared to works by established colored pencil artists, and this is my second reason. The book begins with some promising ideas, but adding other mediums should enhance, not muddy the result as I feel they do here.
The colored pencial medium has burgeoned into an extremely professional field in the last ten years or so, and this makes it a highly competitive market where new publications are concerned. The authors of this book have hard acts to follow, and this inevitably affects any assessment of its merits. The competition includes artist/instructors like Cecile Baird, Bet Borgeson and particularly Ann Kullberg, arguably the best of all colored pencil artists.
In fact, on Kullberg's website, even unsuccessful entries in her 2007 juried competition have a "zing' that is somehow missing in the illustrations in this book. The explanation that clarity is inevitably lost in simplifying the step-by-step lessons may be fair enough, but I suggest you compare these instructions with those on the Kullberg website. Although using colored pencil alone, Kulberg's exercises nevertheless achieve radiant, light-filled results.
Perhaps minor quibbles, but the exercises are not numbered (for easy reference) and the number is incorrectly given as 52 in the subtitle on the cover.
'Creative Colored Pencil Workshop'is beautifully bound and the authors undoubtedly convey a passion for their medium, but I find that the book comes nowhere near the high standard of books by the artist/authors mentioned above. For the higher price, I really expected something more.
Beautiful Illustrations.......2007-05-25
Beautiful paintings by the authors and other artists strike a nice balance between a how-to book and a must-have for sheer enjoyment. I uploaded two images so you could see into the book.
Herschberger and Huff share their expertise on an expansive range of materials making this an excellent entry point for beginners and great fun for experimental artists. In one demonstration, or technically two I guess, they both paint from the same reference photo, but make entirely different painting choices. Witty humor highlights their rapport as the two artists work together and play off one another.
I particularly liked the silver leaf demonstration and how it was used in a realistic, not decorative, painting. Can't wait to try that!
Eye Opener.......2007-05-04
I always thought colored pencils were for the grandkids. Wow, I read the entire book in one sitting and I can't wait to try some of the new ways of using not only colored pencils, but other media. Thank you to the authors for opening my eyes to new things.

You'll Never Outgrow This.......2005-09-26
Though usually demonstrated in colored pencil, these are excellent for any colored media: dry or oil pastels, acrylics, aquarelle, oils, gouache, and so on. Following them will get you to stretch your skills: even if you are in an "orange period" you need to play with the other stuff occasionally just to remember why orange is fascinating by comparison. Especially valuable when you are feeling stale: start where you last left off, or start all over at lesson one. Each time you do them, you do them differently, and you learn new things.
Come one, come all! ----Beginners to experts!.......2000-06-12
What a great resource for artists of all levels to develop and improve their skills. I have searched extensively for a step by step program to help me become skilled with colored pencil. I love the format which gives an instructional narrative about an aspect and then gives a drawing assignment to direct the artist in an effective exercise to develop the skill. It breaks down the vast (and sometimes overwhelming) body of information into bite sized pieces for the beginner and progresses on to challenge an intermediate to advanced student as well. In all fairness, I must say that I am writing from the perspective of a relative beginner. I don't know exactly how advanced one would need to be to outgrow this book, but I think it would last all beginners and most intermediate students quite a long time! I found the author's illustrations very helpful and the displays of her own work is a feast for the eyes. I wish there were more of them. All told, this is a wonderful book of clear lessons and great assignments.

This book is old school having been written in 1988. The first half of the book , all pictures are in black and white. The rest are somewhat washed out and lackluster. It has the basic fundamentals and what not and good as a reference.Spend your money on up to date books and leave this one for the library.

Only worth the £11 I paid for it...........2005-07-12
When I paid £11 for this book I thought I would only get £11 worth of information...now that I have finished the book I think I was correct.
This book seems to have been put together by some one with no first hand knowledge, infact 3rd hand. Every topic is covered in an overview with no specific details, names of brands, costs, etc...which is the main reason most people buy this book. I believe this book could have been better if some one googled and compiled all the information.
Very good book, but there is room for more.......2002-07-01
Ok, If just half the clubs in this town were to read this book, they would probably stay in business longer than a year. This book is very well thought out and covers alot of little gotcha's in designing a night club. Gotcha's that in my experience most club owners ignore or don't know about, and then wonder why nobody comes to their clubs.
My only critism is that the author could have explained things further if the book had more pages. He summarizes a ton of infomation well to fit in the books alotted length but really on the business side of things, I suspect he could have filled another book altogether.
Good, but could be better.......2002-02-01
This book covered much of the same info as in other start-up books for bars/clubs, but definately points you in the right direction for things to think about and consider in owning or starting a nightclub. Aside from the numerous grammatical errors I am pleased with the book. This book should have been proofed better before publishing, I found an error about ever 10 pages (along with some strange wording). I would like to see a bit more on financial price breakdowns and models along with more info on contacts and ways to go about getting the tools/contacts you need. All-in-all this was good brain food for thought.
Informative.......2001-09-10
Excellent book for anybody who hopes to someday open and run their own nightclub or bar. This book talks about what it takes to open a club and run one. Being a bar owner is not as easy as it seems and this one tells you what you need to know. The appendix, with many drink recipes at the end of the book was also very helpful and educational about mixing drinks. This is definitately a must read for anyone in the bar business or hoping to get into it.

Customer Reviews:
So-So.......2000-11-06
This is an okay book but for the price it's not worth it. The information and numerous quotes from various nightclub owners and managers, contained within is semi-helpful. Anyone looking to seriously run and operate their own nightclub should definately find a better book that gets down to the step by step basics. Most of what is presented in this book does little more than give a few ideas. The book itself is also very cheaply manufactured as it seemed to fall apart on it's own after only a short time. This book is okay, but for the price, one can do better

Book Description
Helen Tsiganou's study explores the enormous diversity of worker participation schemes across national contexts. Using a historical comparative approach, worker participation schemes are examined in two major settings: the developed capitalist countries of the United States, Japan, Sweden, Norway, England, Germany, and France; and the centrally planned less developed socialist countries of Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, China, and the Soviet Union. Tsiganou addresses the conditions under which participation schemes emerge and the reasons for similarities or differences among these schemes. She first studies the origins and history of schemes within a given national setting. She then draws on specific national experiences and makes cross national comparisons. This is not a systematic, detailed, country-by-country comparison but an explanation of the enormous diversity of worker participative schemes through comparative analysis. Part I of this volume examines the motives and goals behind various participatory schemes and their development and outcomes in the two distinct settings. The comparative logic and analytical framework of the book is laid out against a background of existing theoretical and analytical work. Meanings and definitions attached to worker participation, and their significance in denoting the dynamics of power within the workplace and society, are also covered. This section concludes with a discussion of the book's major assumptions. Part II deals with the diversity of workers participation schemes in several developed countries--countries with advanced industry and democratic pluralist political systems. Part III discusses schemes in several centrally planned socialist societies; and their efforts through reforms to correct their weaknesses. The final section summarizes the findings of the study and explores issues that emerge as cross-national and cross-sectional comparisons are made.
