Book Description
The subject of John Singer Sargent's most famous painting was twenty-three-year-old New Orleans Creole Virginie Gautreau, who moved to Paris and quickly became the "it girl" of her day. A relative unknown at the time, Sargent won the commission to paint her; the two must have recognized in each other a like-minded hunger for fame.
Unveiled at the 1884 Paris Salon, Gautreau's portrait generated the attention she craved-but it led to infamy rather than stardom. Sargent had painted one strap of Gautreau's dress dangling from her shoulder, suggesting either the prelude to or the aftermath of sex. Her reputation irreparably damaged, Gautreau retired from public life, destroying all the mirrors in her home.
Drawing on documents from private collections and other previously unexamined materials, and featuring a cast of characters including Oscar Wilde and Richard Wagner, Strapless is a tale of art and celebrity, obsession and betrayal. A Timeless Image.......2007-08-27
When I was younger, I saw this image in an art book and, without reading anything about it, decided that it was a fasion plate from the 1950's. I picked this book up because I instantly remembered the white shoulder. Davis's book puts the painting in a cultural context that greately helped me understand it. There is a black and white print of people at an outdoor cafe on the day of the Salon in which Madame X appeared. The women are covered in bustles, multiple skirts, gloves and hats. I now understand what that audience found so dangerous about her wayward strap.
Engaging story, historical glimpse of 19th-cent France, & biography of Sargent to boot.......2007-08-10
This book is about the French-via-Creole socialite Amelie Gautreau's interaction with American-expatriate painter John Singer Sargent, an encounter that resulted in a painting that altered both of their lives. In weaving together the story of these two people, author Davis has created an engaging volume that simultaneously provides a window into 19th-century French society and a biography of the great painter Sargent.
Sargent's decision to paint Gautreau's portrait with a strap hanging off her shoulder at a time when he was trying to promote his fledging portraitist career was a calculated decision to glean publicity on the heels of Manet's "Olympia." There's a saying that "any publicity is good publicity" -- true in the case of Sargent. The strength of his work outlived the short-term scandal caused by the painting, which was so disturbing to him that he soon repainted the shoulder with the strap back on (now in the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum). Unfortunately, the scandal ruined Gautreau's life, although simply growing old probably would have had the same effect on Gautreau, whose self-worth appears to have been inextricable with popularity, appearance, and youth.
The author is to be commended for trusting her intuition in following a very small detail -- the dress in Sargent's painting -- and finding the mystery behind it, revealing in the process a fascinating story. In so doing, she has created a marvelous glimpse into the art and society of late 19th-century France, as well as an easily-read biography of Sargent, certainly one of our most complex and greatest 19th-century American painters. I have always loved Sargent's work but have never read a biography of him, and was glad to have the opportunity to do so in such an interesting context. A very good read and interesting book.
Enjoyable, readable history of the time, painter and subjects.......2007-07-04
In a brief, readable book, Davis does a good job giving us an overview of Gilded Age Paris, the social changes between Sargent Madame X's debut and paintings of Mrs. Gatreua just a few years later.
She also gives us some nice background into lives of some of Sargents subjects, and the fraternal band of painters at the time. The only thing I would take with a grain of salt is her 'was he gay theories' some of the examples of drawings she uses to speculate into this show a lack of understanding about the artistic process. I know several professional painters who read the book and liked it but laughed at her 'proof' - the drawing over of a young many with a similar silhouette as Madame X - this is done all the time by artists, sometimes your subject 'turns into' another.

Two very interesting lives that leave you with the desire to know more about "Belle Epoque". Looking forward to another book by Deborah Davis.

In la belle epoque France, people lined up for the annual art exhibition the way we do today for blockbuster movies. In this case, John Singer Sergeant painted more than just the portrait of a beautiful woman, and Paris didn't like it. The resulting scandal almost ruined him, it did ruin her, and I still want to dig him up and ask him why he put the strap back up.

Darcie is a nearly 30-something whose sole excitement is her weekly hotel fling with a handsome stockbroker. Even her octogenarian grandmother has a busier sex life. Her friends tell her he must be married - but she gives him the benefit of doubt until she runs into him at a toy store, with his children in tow
After working her bum off at work, she bests the office snoop, getting her big break and a great promotion that results in her traveling to Australia to scout locations for a new store for the lingerie company she works for. A one night stand with a sexy sheepherder last two weeks, and soon both are head over heels in love. Unfortunately, Dylan has yet to hear of women's liberation.
Back in the states, Darcie tries to move on, but everything reminds her of Dylan. When former flame Merrick tells her that he is separated and wants to reconcile, part of her wants to accept, and the other part tells her that he is a poor imitation for the man that has captured her heart. Between her overflowing love life and the corporate back stabbing, Darcie's cup runneth over!
Riker does a great job bending Australian colloquialisms into Dylan's speech and capturing Darcie's bewilderment as to what he is talking about, and for the most part the story is somewhat believable (although the annoying grandmother is a little over the top). It was a joy to read the story of a stalwart macho man and a feminist try to find some common ground for negotiating. And I loved the twist with Merrick - didn't see that one coming! It is not an award worthy book, but it is engaging and manages to capture your attention, that you won't want to put it down.

Darcie gets the chance to help open a Wunderthings Lingerie store in Australia. She meets the man of her dreams, but then, of course, she returns to her life in Manhattan. She also deals with her grandma's extremely active sex life, grandma's aggressive cat, her flighty sister, an ex-boyfriend who is now divorced, a neighbor who enters her apartment thru her bedroom window, her parents...these are just some of the colorful people in Darcie's life.

Fun, Flirty, and Fabulous.......2004-05-05
I read this book last summer and I loved it. I love the Red Dress Ink series and this one had a great pitch. It was hot and fun and flirty, not the same old husband cheating or 30 something story we've read again and again. I thought it was a great cross between Chiclit and Romance. Isn't that the audience that RDI is looking to market to?? I just really connected with Darci, career going nowhere, trying to make it on your own, mom bugging you to come home,the once a week boyfriend, the friends, etc. She finally sees her chance to break through! I think a lot of mid to late 20's women out there can relate. I just wish I could find my own hot little Aussie to take me away!
A Fun and Romantic Romp Down Under.......2004-04-25

A really bad Red Dress ink book, should be zero stars!.......2004-02-16
When I read that read the Red Dress Ink were coming out, I was very much looking forward to them. I first RDI book purchase was "Sprapless" by Leigh Riker and I glad that I just finished reading the book last night, because if I read it earlier, I may have never bought another book from the RDI line again. This book was just awful! I can't understand of the life of me how the editors thought this book was a "Chick-lit" book. I could care less what happen to either Darcie or Dylan. The only reason that I finished the book was the fact that spent 12.95 of my hard earn money to read it.! Note to Amazon.com you should really have Zero stars, for books that really bad, like "Strapless!"

... if you don't like science, you won't like this book. But if you've spent too many hours in a lab coat working on your advisor's projects while you own languishes in a corner, this might appeal.
Including short works by John Updike, Leo Szilard (!), Lester del Rey, and many more, the humor is closer to "Parkinson's Law" (C. Northcote Parkinson is in this book too!) than to "Saturday Night Live" ... so it won't appeal to everyone ... but if you appreciate the difference between a lipid and a lipstick, you may enjoy this.
My favorites in the book: "Psychoanalysis of Missle Failures" and "Hiawatha's Lipid"
An unusual humorous book........1997-11-27
This book, out of print for approximately 25 years, was written to prove that scientists really DO have a sense of humor. It is a collection of humorous short stories each loosely based upon some scientific issue, idea or concern. The title story typifies what the reader will find within!

excellent resource..........2000-01-02
...merely a tool, which definitley involves work on behalf of the reader. There are no pictures or test tiles to rely on; you have to try them yourself... a refreshing change from the results usually included in glaze books because you have to experiment and come up with your own results. I used the 1970's edition of this book as an undergraduate, which included the original recipes - not revised to exclude toxins - and while the revised edition is informative, it lacks the conversions for the "toxic" ingredients which many of us still use for the stunning results they provide. As a result some of the best recipes have been excluded from the new edition, and unfortunatley, the replacements and substitutions produce nowhere near the results gained from earlier editions. Still a good tool for the potter who enjoys glaze experimentation, but if you can score a copy of an unrevised edition(there are two- and they are out of print), you are sure to be pleased!
very promising , but delivers little ........1999-03-27
Many of these glazes are from other sources , same for clay bodies , but have been altered slightly to be presented anew. No real emphasis on glaze toxicity . Fritting Barium and Lead does not guarantee safety in the finished glazes . It's a case of user be aware . No guidelines for glaze usuage on functional wares or decorative . Is the glaze able stand table use - who knows ? Another in the long line of Artistic Glaze books , Ho Humm.
Lots of details but very few illustrations........1999-01-04
I was disappointed by this book due to the lack of illustrations even if only of test tiles. If the author has tested these formulae I cannot understand why these illustrations were not included, but without them the reader is left having to conduct his own test to determine the effects achievable. If the author has not tested, then the book is little better than the lists of glazes available free on the internet. Either way the reader is left with a lot of work to do.

This book has everything you could ever want in a glaze book. Includeing every chemical you need for glazes and charts on how much colorants to add in percentages. Every kind of glaze for every cone. I didnt' pay too much attention to the clay makeing part but thats not hard to do.

Chappel provides a complete compendium of formulas for various types of clays from low fire to porcelain. He provides extensive formulas for various types of glazes from low fire to cone 14. The formulas are arranged by type, color and includes speciality glazes such as crystaline glazes. He provides complete instructions for firing. In addition there is a good discussion of materials, substitutions and toxicity.

"More Letters to Rollins" by R.K. Overton is a collection of "fan mail" and art allegedly sent to singer/actor/author Henry Rollins. It offers a humorous look at the lives of celeb-stalkers, whackos, philosophers and various Rollinsonians who want to reach out and connect with the former Black Flag frontman. Overton compiled this sequel to the popular book, "Letters to Rollins," to give readers even more bizarre and earnest commentary from the masses.
Overton notes in the introduction that he's culled these gems from the mailbag to answer the loaded question, "What's Henry really like?" What makes this book so fun to read is the way it answers that question with each entry serving as a humorous character sketch of the fan, and an homage to Rollins's inspiring nature.
The fact that Rollins printed this book through his 2.13.61 publishing house shows a wry intelligence that could easily be masked by the imposing facade of fame, muscles and tattoos. Clearly this is someone who knows how to laugh at himself and the world around him.

This is a really funny book poking fun at the life of punk poet Henry Rollins. Some of the people from the first book are back again along with a new group of malcontents jumping Henry through a new set of hoops, ultimately dipping into parallel worlds of foreign exchange students, Haiku Contests, Lilith Fair, and covert time travel experiments. Highly entertaining and highly recommended.
Heat your house with this thing..........2000-08-17
What a waste of my time. I actually threw this book away. I only fished it out of the garbage when I found I could get my money back. The letters aren't real, they aren't even BASED on real letters. Overton ISN'T funny and he's playing off a subject that Mr. Rollins has repeatedly talked about in a negative context - getting badgered by idiotic fans who feel he owes them something. Try Rollins' actual books if you want a good read. "Letters..." is overdone, uncreative, and basically a cheap, weasely way to make money. Rot in H-E-double Q, Overton. You're a hack.

R.K. is back again, and he brought his crew of messed up, weirded out misfits with him. In it, we find people writing about theories which aren't based in reality, or even this planet. One might wonder about Overton, but hey, we've all got to make a living *L*. In summary, buy this book, pretend you're Hank, and laugh your head off. Highly recommended.

What a gift!.......2007-09-16
I love this book! The interviews are insightful, and Matt Glaser's transcription of the jazz pieces are nothing short of amazing. I have to concur with the other reviewer who said that it would be very helpful to have recordings. I have managed to find a few of them on iTunes, but it's difficult since this book was published in 1981 and a lot of the recordings used are now out of print. Maybe Mr. Glaser can release a new one with different songs on it...I can always hope. This book feels like a great gift...unlocking a mystery. I love the motifs that he included as well...Stephane Grappelli's most used licks. That is SO helpful!
Would be a fantastic resource, but..........2006-02-19
This book would a fantastic way to understanding how six great jazz violinists improvise - if only there was easy access to the recordings. Even when I have found cds available that have the same title as refered to for the transcriptions, they don't always have the track that has been transcribed. What this really needs is to be packaged with a cd recording of all the tracks transcribed in the book. If anyone can suggest an easy way of getting hold of all these tracks please do so. Perhaps Amazon could even compile a list of where to find these specific tracks on cd? Any one wanting a more tuitional guide that you can start using strait away, see Jazz Fiddle Wizzard.

Book is Okay........2007-08-30
I guess I wasn't ready for this book when I bought it. It assumes you have a great deal of Jazz Violin experience and improvisation under your belt. Perhaps I could return to it again in a year or two and benefit. The music on the accompanying CD is just too fast to follow along with, even though they give you the music and you get familiar with it. It's too too fast to follow the phrasing along with the CD.
Book is probably better for experienced Jazz folks.
