    Book Description

Stunning and vibrant artwork can be found on buildings, sidewalks, street signs, and other surfaces in cities from New York to London to Barcelona. Street Art presents a comprehensive overview of this movement that began in the late 1960s with anonymous spray-can art in New York and Philadelphia and that has since grown into a cross-cultural phenomenon over the last four decades.

Street Art begins with an explanation of the difference between street art and graffiti, along with new trends and styles. Each medium is then explored in a different chapter—stickers and posters, stencils, textured surfaces, traffic signs, buildings and furniture. Also included are chapters on street art characters and panoramic murals. Woven throughout are biographies of the artists—all internationally known—and an interview with each one.

Street Art is an exciting look at an art movement that has been around for decades but that is just now beginning to emerge in the mainstream.

This is a great how-to book. Lots of excellent information. As a working photographer I found it to be very informative. Nice babes too!

        2 out of 5 stars Brief Overview.......2000-07-12

This one is a little thin on content. Gives about a paragraph on every topic, but no detail on anything. You'd be better off buying a 2-3 books that give more detail on different topics like lighting, business, models, etc. Though a bit dated, John Kelly's "Successful Glamour Photography" is more useful and cheaper. "Part-Time Glamour Photography : Full-Time Income" is also a better buy. The photos are good, but the same handful of models are used throughout - no variety. As if they went out and shot the whole thing in a weekend and threw together some text. Get this only if you want a synopsis, but you could finish it in 10 minutes at the rack.

        4 out of 5 stars Nice Stuff.......2000-07-01

Interesting concept! I like the ideas and the photos, not to mention the beautiful models. I would have rated it 5 stars, but the swimsuits are too conservative.

Inuyasha Volume Six (1997.) The six graphic novel in the Inuyasha series.

        INTRODUCTION:
When I was younger, I was a big-time anime fan. Although little of the Japanese animation was being shown on American TV back then, what little I saw, I liked. It fast became apparent that the Japanese had a much better way of creating animation - one that fused seriousness and comedy perfectly, and one that would appeal to people of all ages - NOT just children. And in recent years I had pretty much abandoned my interest in anime altogether. However, I had always remained curious, and in the more recent years I had heard of a series called Inuyasha that was constantly getting praised. I watched a few episodes, and it wasn't hard to see why. The series was created by Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Ranma 1/2 (a series that remains VERY popular.) Although I liked the episodes I saw on TV, they started somewhere in the middle of things, and I wanted to get the story from the beginning. Since the episode DVDs were too pricey, I opted for the manga (comic/graphic novel) version (most animes are based on manga.) Read on for my review of Inuyasha Volume Six.

        STORYLINE OVERVIEW:
Inuyasha has one of those stories that's EXTREMELY tough to put into words, but I'll try my best. Bear with me here, people. Several centuries ago in Japan, there were ongoing wars, between humans and demons alike. In modern-day japan, a girl named Kagome lives on a shrine with her family, and one day one of the demons from the past pulls her down the shrine's well. The well is a linking point between the modern age and the age in the distant past, in which wars were raging constantly. She is revealed to be the reincarnation of a priestess who, several years earier, killed an evil half-demon called Inuyasha. But, through several odd twists of fate, she is forced to join forces with the resurrected Inuyasha, to recover the shards of a sacred jewel, which could be used to greatly increase the powers of and demon, good or evil, who gets their hands on them. Although reluctant to help at first, Kagome finally decides to help Inuyasha, realizing that the well is the warp point between times, she doesn't want to put her family in immediate danger. (I KNOW, that's not the best possible summary. If you want a better one, visit one of the various fansites.)

        IN THIS VOLUME:
This volume picks up right where its predecessor left off. Following the events in the most recent story, the battle between Inuyasha and the reincarnated Kikyo continues. But that's just the beginning of the troubles. A strange artist has gotten a hold of a Shikon jewel shard that was tainted, and has become corrupt. He now paints monsters which can be brought to life with this power, and must be stopped! But things aren't all bad, since a newcomer has joined Inuyasha and the group's quest. This edition marks the first appearance of everyone's favorite perverted monk, Miroku. It is also in this edition that Naraku, the main villain of the series, is first mentioned.

        OPINIONS:
Overall, I am very satisfied with this series - it's been a LONG time since I liked an anime and/or manga this much. Rumiko Takahashi has once again succeded beautifully, combining seriousness with comedy, and creating an excellent storyline fusing history and fantasy alike. It was great to finally get the proper introduction to the series. I urge you to get the proper introduction yourself, as well. If you just start watching/reading somewhere in the middle of the series, you may be left dazed and confused and judge the series based on an awkward first impression. DON'T make that mistake.

        CURRENT EDITION:
The edition of this manga currently available is actually a second edition - the first edition is now out of print and is no longer readily available. I'm VERY satisfied with the way the Inuyasha manga got ported to America. First and most importantly, it's uncensored. Many manga series get heavy editing when they get an American release, as do their anime counterparts. Another thing I am happy about is they "Americanized" the reading style, while at the same time staying true to the original projected vision. For those of you who don't know, the Japanese read from right to left, and sometimes mangas are ported in that fashion. Being an American, I'm used to reading from left to right, so I was glad to see that it was ported into English in a "left to right" reading style (and all of the images have been reversed to reflect the change and to stay true to the original vision.) Likewise, these graphic novels are almost two hundred pages each, and since each one costs less than ten bucks, they're a pretty good deal. Overall, it's great to see Inuyasha didn't butchered the way some series do.

        OVERALL:
Inuyasha is the best anime/manga series to come along for me in a long time. It's not hard to see why so many people call it one of their favorites. I personally recommend the manga over the anime, since the manga came first and is, therefore, Takahashi's original vision. Likewise, the DVDs are kind of a rip-off pricewise. But whether you decide to do the anime, the manga, or both, you're likely to agree it's an excellent series.

5 out of 5 stars Another main character arrives.......2003-04-14

It is my belief that the word 'subtle' is not in Rumiko Takahashi's dictionary. 90% of the characters in Ranma 1/2 lack the trait, and several of the people in Maison Ikkoku need a lesson. We won't even get into Ataru and his crowd from Urusei Yatsura. Inu Yasha has provided us with some new examples of those who speak their mind and constantly make you hang your head and sigh.

While not as boisterous and arrogant as Inu Yasha, the Buddhist monk Miroku shares some traits with the dog-demon. Both tend to say what they think, regardless of the consequences. Both are stubborn as mules and as dense as rocks. But that's what we love about them.

Miroku has a tendency to ask something quite...personal from the women that he meets. As for what this is--you'll just have to read the books won't you?

5 out of 5 stars So you want to buy this............2003-02-09

Ok!I am tottally in love with this series so listen closly! Things have started to heat up as the group meets a monk named Miroku. Now, they know that Naraku is the true cause of Kikyou's death! This series is so cool but I reccomend that 10 year olds read this!

5 out of 5 stars Perverts, Painters, and the Living Dead.......2003-01-22

...All of which are contained in this manga. This manga is VERY IMPORTANT plotwise, because not only is a new main charachter introduced but the nice little dead lady has some interesting things happen that stick with us for the rest of the series so far. As for the painter, he's of little importance in the big scheme of things, so it'll suffic to say that we get to see Miroku use that hole in his hand, as well as some brain power and Inu Yasha also kicks butt liberally.
        Enjoy!

        5 out of 5 stars ^_^.......2002-04-25

It's a great book! I would say it's one of the best Volumes!

            4 out of 5 stars Re-programming people for succes.......2000-04-02

The major point of this book is that, no matter what circumstances you're in, somebody has already been there and conquered it. There's really no excuse why we can't achieve the things we want in life. Desi relates many aspects of his own life, a plus in my opinion, and draws parallels to basic success builidng principles. He talks a lot about his days in college football and actually builds a fair amount of tension and excitement in each and every story making this book not only enlightening, but also entertaining as well. He urges people reading the book to take a look at their life and realize the finite amount of time we have. He puts it very eloquently by saying that everyone's hour glass is different, some are shorter than others, and nobody but God knows.

Speaking of which, Desi is a very strong believer in God and he's not afraid to say it. he has conviction and spiritual strength that shows in every sentence. He doesn't at any point try to push his views on anyone but he does show that you don't need to be politically correct to get a good point across. He also builds good rapport and trust with the reader right away by sharing a very personal childhood experience he had. It took a lot of guts to write that and I don't think too many people would have the courage to come out and say what he did in the very introduction of the book.

Perhaps the most valuable part of this book is on page 41 which is the sum essence of what not only this book, but all self help books, are about:

"If it's true that we have the power to choose how we feel, why do most people choose the negative? It's because WE'RE BORN TO WIN, BUT PROGRAMMED TO FAIL! We are programmed into the negative from the moment we come into this world. It starts with our upbringing. By the time you reach the age of 18, you've heard the word 'no' 200,000 times, seen 30,000 acts of violence, and have received more than 12 million messages in the form of advertising telling you how to look, what to eat, and hnow to feel. No wonder most of us grow up with a negative self image!"

I think that brief quote from the book sums up why not only reading this book is important, but why reading books in general is important. I hope anyone reading this books gets as much as I did out of it.

                  Book Description

What Grammy-award winning band's Jewish members recite kiddush before their Friday night concerts? What member of a world-famous band blows the shofar at his synagogue on the High Holy Days? What famous rock musician packed his menorah as well as his drum set when preparing to go on world-wide concert tours? How did Judaism's historic affinity with music--the Torah was meant to be sung--translate into some of the best-loved rock 'n' roll songs of the past century?

Inspired by a backstage conversation with David Lee Roth during which the rock star revealed that he first learned to sing preparing for his Bar Mitzvah, Scott R. Benarde spent five years combining his love of Judaism, journalism, and rock 'n' roll investigating the Jewish contribution to rock music from 1953 to the present. Noting that outside of the Christian rock genre the media had rarely (with the exception of Bob Dylan) dealt with a rock star's religion or spirituality, Benarde was determined to find out how Judaism influenced rock music and the people who created it. Jews kvell when they discover that someone famous or accomplished in any field is a member of the tribe, but wouldn't it really be something if these celebrities cared about being Jewish?

Focusing on these musicians, singers, and songwriters, Stars of David offers a highly readable collection of short vignettes that demonstrate the rich strand of Jewish belief and sentiment that underscores the work of many of the best-known rock stars of our time. Among those discussed or interviewed are the legendary songwriting teams of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, performers such as Bob Dylan, Melissa Manchester, Janis Ian, Randy Newman, Billy Joel, Kinky Friedman (of the Texas Jewboys), and David Lee Roth, and members of groups such as the Tokens, Jay and the Americans, Country Joe and the Fish, Yes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bon Jovi, Phish, the Wallflowers and many others.

Benarde reveals how Judaism has played a greater role in rock music than we realize and discovers that many Jewish rockers are more in tune with their Judaism than we would have imagined. Based largely on one-on-one interviews with the artists, the result is a surprisingly personal and introspective consideration of faith, art, and the relationship between pop culture and spirituality. Also revealed is the sheer variety of the Jewish experience in rock 'n' roll: from the deeply religious childhood of some to the late-in-life religious reawakening of others; from the explicit use of scripture in song to the subtle yet resonant religious motifs that influence this most secular genre of music. With entertaining anecdotes and personal revelations enhanced by more than seventy photographs, Stars of David is not so much about how Jewish these artists are but ultimately, how they are Jewish, and how their Jewishness has affected rock 'n' roll.

3 out of 5 stars Critical mistake or typographical error?.......2007-09-09

In the preview, page 18, third paragraph, the book states a glaring error, perhaps it is a typographical error, but if not, it is a BIG mistake.

                  The line reads:
"His parents had arrived in the United States abord the Lusitania in 1925...".

                  The mistake?
May 7, 1915, the Lusitania sailed near the coast of Ireland.
At 2:10 p.m., a torpedo fired by a German submarine hit the side of the Lusitania.
18 minutes later, the Lusitania was history, just another collection in Davy Jones's Locker.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book; Deceptive Subtitle.......2004-07-10

This is a very interesting, at times spiritually moving book, although it is ill-served by its deceptive subtitle "Rock'n'Roll's Jewish Stories." This book is NOT an overview of Jews or the Jewish influence in rock or in popular music. Those expecting discussions of Alan Freed or the Chess Brothers will be disappointed. Instead this book features over 50 profiles (mainly interviews) with a wide variety of musicians, all of whom are Jewish by one definition or another, several of whom are rock n rollers only by the loosest definition. (Peter Yarrow?)
Among those profiled are Bob Dylan, Mike Bloomfield, Janis Ian, Kinky Friedman, Stan Lynch of the Heartbreakers, Max Weinberg, Barry Goldberg, Peter Himmelman and Johnny Clegg. With the exception of Dylan, living artists are interviewed. (Dylan fans will find little new here.)Interviews were conducted with family members of those who have passed on (Bloomfield, Marc Bolan, Randy California.)
Because the questions focus on spirituality and Jewish identity (or lack thereof) these interviews are not typical of what you'd read in the regular media. Many of the musicians' responses are passionate, heart-felt, thoughtful and often provocative. Because the criteria for inclusion was Jewish identity of some sort, rather than record sales, many fine musicians who do not receive the media attention they deserve are included. For me, it was worth the price of the book to read the moving interviews with the wonderful and under-appreciated Genya Ravan and Marcella Detroit/Marcy Levy.
What makes this book a 4 star rather than 5 star book is the somewhat arbitrary choice of profiles. There is no explanation given as to why certain Jewish artists are profiled and why others are barely mentioned or ignored. It seems to be based purely on the author's whim or personal preference but this isn't clear. It can't be because certain artists refused to participate because there's no interview or indication of participation from Dylan. So the question becomes, why Bob Dylan and not Paul Simon? Melissa Manchester but not Bette Midler? Leiber and Stoller but not the wonderful Doc Pomus? Why profiles of the Blues Project but not of the J. Geils Band, another group with heavy Jewish concentration?
That said, if you are interested in any of these musicians, in discussions of Jewish identity or of spirituality in general, this is a worthwhile, interesting book.

1 out of 5 stars One of the fluffiest books ever written........2004-01-16

The author likely put a lot of time into writing this book and not really wanting to disparage his efforts and trying my best to be fair, I unfortunately would not recommend this book to anyone who is looking for anything other than a bit of fluff typical of a rock and roll fanzine. Almost every 3 to 5 page chapter follows an identical formula, example; the subject attended synagogue, didn't attend synagogue, Bubbe played music at home, Zayde worked as mattress maker, and all these rock & rollers always followed the golden rule of Judaism. Surely there must be more information, insight or dare I say original research available on these people being profiled? As my company's Editor-In-Chief often said, "news is a surprise", "tell me something I don't already know", which this book doesn't even attempt to do. Buy it if you must, put it in reading rack next to the Loo and enjoy yourself for the few pages you'll be able to tolerate everytime you need a short reading diversion.

                    Book Description

This book is a compilation of sayings. Not old and revered sayings from historical characters, but rather ordinary people from all walks of life and nationalities. Its contents are the result of a self-conceived project, in which people were approached by the author during a twelve year period and were asked to create, by using their mental acumen and lifetime experience, an entirely new saying of their own.

The premise upon which the project was based was the following: Must a saying attain immortality only because it was uttered by a famous character? Isn't the ordinary human being capable of formulating truly quotable thoughts if sufficiently and properly motivated?

Utilizing as base of operations his home-city of Victoria, Canada the author began approaching totally unknown individuals from the world over and proposed the idea to them. People from different nationalities, occupations and age groups were asked to participate in the project in a voluntary way by submitting a thought, an insight, a perceived truth, which would have sufficient intellectual weight to be considered as a quotable saying that could help to enrich world culture.

The only condition being, their contribution had to be totally new and orginal.

During the duration of the project, the author received nearly a thousand replies, two hundred of which were chosen to appear in this book. Those chosen were selected by their ingenuity and overall appeal.

Concurrently, the author invested a considerable amount of effort trying to verify that the sayings received were not a case of plagiarism and were truly authentic.

The results speak for themselves and the author leaves on the hands of the readers the final word regarding the entertaining value of the book.

                    Book Description

What is the relationship between work and family in a world where employment creates endless tensions for families and families create endless tensions for the workplace? This collection of reprinted and original articles broadens this discussion by addressing issues from the perspectives of often neglected populations: from white middle-class women with young children to people of color, to poor families, to the new sorts of families gays and lesbians are struggling to construct, to fathers, to older children.

To discuss work and family is also to discuss gender. Ranging from California's Silicon Valley to a remote fishing village in the northeast, part one shows how new work arrangements have created new expectations for what it means to be a woman or a man, and how slow and uneven the pace of change can be. Nowhere are the tensions of work and family more potent than around childcare. Part two takes up these tensions, showing how various "solutions" to caring for children of all ages (whether infants or teenagers) create new problems. Parts three and four turn outward to show how the new relationships between families and work are changing the relationships between families and the communities in which they live and generating new social policy dilemmas.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of readings!.......2002-05-27

Two years ago, many of us were at a conference in San Francisco that led to the new book, "Families at Work: Expanding the Bounds," edited by Naomi Gerstel, Dan Clawson, and Robert Zussman (Vanderbilt Press, 2002,[$$$]+shipping from amazon.com). I thought the conference was great, but the book is even better. Whether due to the judicious selection of chapters, or superb editing, the book serves as a great reader on work/family research, and particularly for qualitative research (I know,
some of the quant folks hit the ceiling when an 'N' of 36 pops up, but I find much of it very insightful). Many of the chapters are on topics where little is otherwise known -- including the division of labor among lesbigay couples, the meanings of reciprocity among single moms, how moms think about the needs of teenagers, how work & family have fit into the lives of political activists, and how being a 'nerd' translates into masculinity in
high-tech jobs. Two of the papers have already become classics of some sort -- a chapter from Francine Deutsch's "Halving It All" on blue-collar couples, and a chapter by Gerstel and Clawson on unions and w/f. A majority of the chapters have admittedly been published elsewhere already, but it would be very difficult to put all of the articles together yourself for, say, a course, and the book would work very well at the senior undergrad or grad level. Great work & congrats to the editors!
