Each chapter in The Alchemy of MirrorMask begins with an introduction by McKean and Gaiman and then guides readers through the different types of visuals used to create the film, including sketches, paintings, storyboards, 3-d models, photographs, texture maps, frame blow-ups, and more. Also included are photos taken on the set and during McKean's travels to Venice, Prague, Trieste, Warsaw, and other places that provided inspiration for MirrorMask. Gaiman and McKean's insightful commentary sheds light on the film's journey from concept to screen.

El libro está lleno de exhuberantes imágenes (principalmente un libro gráfico) y descripciones del proceso de creación de la pelicula, sus personajes, lugares, etc. Hermosamente diagramado por el propio McKean.
A must for any fan/collector of McKean's work. The book is full of gorgeous images (mainly a graphic book) and descriptions of the film creation process, its characters, places, etc. Beautiful layout by McKean himself.

I have often purchased these companion books to films I really like. After I finally rented MirrorMask and loved the design I figured this book would be worth owning, so I ordered it along with the DVD and the soundtrack. I am not disappointed, the quality of this book is amazing and truly "lavish". The comments along with the design and photos really help explain what the creators were thinking of for the film.

if you liked the movie, then you'll surely be interested in this book which details pre-production, shooting etc. i must admit that even though i really like mckean's and gaiman's work, i didn't think the film was a masterpiece - but the book also gives a better understanding of what i think could've been but didn't happen because of budget constraints.

Our home is full of the books that we have been collecting over the past thirty-five years and we visit them all from time to time. But "Gone To Sanctuary", is one of those dynamic, evocative books that we keep close by so that we can continue to revisit and share its richness with our family and friends.
The previous reviewers have already expressed my own view of Mr Kiewit's visually and verbally stunning book. All I can add is that "Gone To Sanctuary" is a precious gift from a talented artist and that it will always occupy a place of honour in our home.
Evokes the grandeur and adventure of our wild West.......1998-02-03
John Kiewit's photographs make me want to get in my car and head to the places of Western America that look blank on the maps. The richness of texture and color in his photgraphs alone are enough to make this book a welcome treasure in your coffee table library. But it is the quotes he pulled from his own diaries of a generation of traveling the backroads of the West, along with appropriate words from others -- famous and little-known -- that set this book apart from the many other fine photographic essays available. The words and pictures together stimulate wanderlust, whether it be the armchair or actual type. Whenever I reread "On the Road" -- I want to get back on the open highway. So is it for me with Kiewit's photographs. Fairness requires me to announce here that he and I are friends, and we've traveled many of the roads of the West together. This fact does not prejudice my opinion of his book. Take a look at it for yourself and you'll agree that the power of his landscapes and his eye for the ghosts of passing civilization make Kiewit a worthy heir to the traditions of Adams, Weston, and Walker.

At first glance John Kiewit¹s GONE TO SANCTUARY looks like an elegant coffee table book of beautiful photographs. It truly is much more than that. Kiewit takes us on a journey of the American West that few have had the opportunity to experience; fewer have taken the time to appreciate.
For those who will not be able to make the trip, and for those who may very well be inspired to take it after enjoying this remarkable book, John displays his photographic expertise and communicates his passions for our gratification.
Opposite each stunning photograph is a quote that Kiewit feels appropriate to the photo. One can often linger on a quote for almost as long as on the photograph. The interplay between the image and the words is one of the things that sets this photo-journal apart from others. The obviously well read Kiewit drew most of the quotes from writers who he felt best expressed the emotion spawned by the photograph. Where he finds it appropriate, John quotes from his travel journal that spans three decades. It is when he uses his own quotes that we often feel closest to the author.
It is not an exaggeration to say that everything about GONE TO SANCTUARY is outstanding. Kiewit has laid out his art, and his heart, for those who can appreciate the true beauty of this publication. This book generates an abundance of personal thought, and one ought not attempt read it in a single sitting. As John quotes Everett Ruess on page 74, I have seen almost more beauty than I can bear.

From a Mother of 3 daughters, I certainly would have found this book, "HAPPY THOUGHTS FOR BAD HAIR DAYS:" Encouragement for Teens, a real asset in their informative teen years. What's a Mother to do to answer some of their terrifying teen questions. Unfortunately, someone else's thought and ideas "sink in" more than a Mom's thoughts. With God on our side, all of our girls turned out AWESOME. They are all Godly Women. Their inside beauty is equal to their outside beauty. This book was really awesome! It was an easy read, and even at 36 it gave me great insights! I wish there had been such good christian writers for teens when I was young. We've all had "bad hair days" (on the outside as well as inwardly), and teen girls have a very real need to know there are people who haven't forgotten what it feels like to be where they are now. Andrea sure lets us all feel like she cares about our daily struggles, and I appreciate her for that! Good job, Andrea, I'll be looking forward to your next book!

A must-read for Beatle fans.......2003-07-10
This book is an outstanding first-hand account of the Beatles and their influence on a generation of Soviet youth. The author tells interesting and fun anecdotes of growing up as a Beatle fan in the USSR, listening to bootleg records, making homemade electric guitars, and wearing long hair in a country where listening to western rock and roll could be seen as a subversive act.
I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in the Beatles, as well as anyone interested history of popular culture in the Soviet Union.
