A really beautiful picture book for adults showcasing a variety of different children's illustrators to showcase an array of picture book art. I picked this up at a conference and I think it is great for librarians or anyone who loves books.

This collection of artwork is an inspiration to future illustrators. It is helpful for teachers trying to show students that reading is important for many reasons.

Among the delights in this book, "The Art of Reading", are artists respectfully mimicking other artists, sharing memories of favorite books, of authors & illustrators; each one encouraging their audience to read and ENJOY. The cover illustration, by the late influential Fred Marcellino, was chosen for its appropriate subject of cat and mouse cozily reading together!

First, I raced through, looking for my favorite illustrators. Then I would pause often to laugh at someone's adaptation, as for example Paul Zelinsky's wonderfully amusing interpretation of "The Color Kittens" and his delightful essay. 'All bases are covered' in this handsome book: it salutes childhood favorites and teachers who were mentors while exploring a variety of mediums & styles. How different and imaginative are the creations of Lois Ehlert, Raul Colon, David McPhail. Bryan Collier with his layers of art and photo collages inspires the detective in us, trying to figure out the source of materials.

All the artists stir some regret that we do not share their talents, yet we love the trips back to happy lap-times and those exciting years of discovering the meaning of words. RIF (*Reading is Fundamental*), an important non-profit literacy organization, has compiled for their 40th anniversary celebration this elegant gift for all who love to read. As an elementary librarian I am always interested to see what books people have loved since childhood. It's fun to see how many can conjure up warm feelings about their mothers, or teachers or even a book's character that they identified with as a child.

How delightful to see what books influenced some of our most talented children's illustrators by reading The Art of Reading! And like the "cherry on top", we get to see their creation in salute to the book.

Excellent Book for Parents.......2005-08-30

This is a wonderfully conceived book that gives a really good overview of children's literature. For new parents looking to educate themselves about books thier children will enjoy, this book can't be beat. You get to see the styles of so many authors and illustrators that you're an instant expert. It also takes you down memory lane - reminding you of so many great books from your own childhood.

A Necessary Aid.......2007-05-27

It has been said that the Companion Book is not needed to solve the puzzle. However, I will pay anyone a million dollars if they can solve this puzzle without the Companion.

The material in the Companion is "released" material used in the Maranatha Team's research that resulted in their find. Understanding key words and phrases, and their meanings, is essential in solving this puzzle and the Companion aids in that direction.

In and of itself, this book will not give you the answers to the puzzle, it is merely a strong aid to that end. Highly Recommended.

Powerful images of archetype, myth, and heritage!.......2001-03-26

My 28-year residency in New Mexico ended with my recent move to California. Viewing Miguel Gandert's photographs opened the floodgates of memory in ways I had not anticipated.

Gandert's images carry the viewer into the most important dimension of ritual: the experiential element. Witnessing these ritual dances, even as a mere spectator, can be a moving experience. A vivid recollection of one New Year's Day at Jemez Pueblo Plaza comes to mind. I sat crosslegged on the ground at the inward-facing edge of the assembly, following the action of the Matachine dancers. A little boy portraying El Torito, the bull, was being chased by a whip-wielding Abuelo, who represents both wise elder and taunting clown. I held my hands over my head, feigning a protective gesture in mock fear, as they ran around me in ever tightening circles. The double-line pattern of the danzantes suddenly shifted and swept over me on both sides with ribbons flying in a swirl of color. In that moment I found all concept of time and structure collapsing into liminality. Afterwards, I became concerned that I might have inadvertently violated ritual space. Upon expressing my feelings to a tribal member, however, I was assured that no such transgression had taken place and that I might have even received a blessing.

The event described above could, no doubt, be interpreted quite differently from another standpoint and through another's eyes. Similarly, this book can be appreciated on many different levels. It's relevancy to universal elements and ritual may resonate with a widely diverse audience. Gandert and four knowledgeable essayists create a compelling cultural admixture of polarity and paradox. The resultant images emerge through layers of time, space, and history like so many bubbles from some deep, ancient well. This book is truly a verbal and visual treasure.

Readers interested in expanding their knowledge of the Matachines tradition will also find a valuable resource in The Matachines Dance: Ritual Symbolism and Interethnic Relations in the Upper Rio Grande Valley by Sylvia Rodriguez.

From these cartoons that appeared in the Indianapolis Star, it is clear that Gary Varvel is a committed member of the conservative, Christian right. The first group in the book is about the Clintons, and they are biting. Unlike many other political cartoonists, there is a sharp, searing edge to the cartoons. After that section, he takes on the candidacy of Al Gore and many of the problems of modern American society.
Some of the other themes are anti-abortion, anti-taxes, anti-gambling and support of the Christian religion. There are some that are very strongly in support of creationism, particularly one showing the late Carl Sagan at the Pearly Gates with the caption, "Carl Sagan Becomes a Creationist."
These are some of the strongest political cartoons that you will ever find; there is no subtlety here.
Whether you agree with his positions or not, it is not possible to argue with the power of the message. Varvel shows us the power of the cartoon to make a statement. With few words, he makes his positions in a very forceful manner.

I have a Guitar/Vocal Edition with Tablature of this book: SHERYL CROW (1997). The first song in the book, "Ordinary Morning," starts with a Slow blues (dotted quarter note equals 40) 12/8 time (ten measures/minute) vocal line in the key of B, with names of the chords G#m, G, C#, F#, and E7 above the first five measures to indicate the "Harmony implied by bass and keyboard." (p. 5). The guitar tablature finally provides string and fret information for an A7 chord for the final six sixteenth notes (each a quarter of a second long) played on page 5.

This book does not show how to form every guitar chord for every song unless you look at the individual notes in the music and corresponding string and fret numbers in the tablature. On page 12, under the title "If It Makes You Happy," there is a chart showing the 23 fingering for the chord Em and a chart with x321 fingering for a C chord, but an "*" in the opening lines of the song for Gtrs. 1and for Gtr. 3 explains the open G tuning used for the tablature on pages 12-14. C is formed in the early part of the song by using the fifth fret for the middle four strings or the 5 highest strings. Because the fifth string has been tuned down (from A to G), the fingering shown in the chart for the chord Em at the top of page 12 could be used to play the first two eighth notes of an Am chord when the song finally gets to the word "happy" at the beginning of the chorus on page 14, but the second fret is also used for another string on the second beat in the chorus, and the notes which follow suggest the need for other fingers. The Bridge which starts on page 15 has an Em chord and C chord used for Gtr. 2, and the explanation is on the last page of the book. "Rhythm Slashes: Strum Indications: Strum with indicated rhythm. The chord voicings are found on the first page of the transcription underneath the song title." (p. 124). The Gtr. 2 at the Bridge must be using standard tuning to form the guitar chords as a typical Gtr. 2 would be following the written names of the chords at the beginning of the song. Gtr. 1 drops out after four measures at the Bridge, but there are notes and Tablature there for Gtr. 4 (Elec.) and Gtr. 5 (Acoustic) playing Riff A "P.M. throughout." (p. 15). The Guitar Tab Glossary by Kenn Chipkin and Aaron Stang on pages 123-124 (copyright 1990 Beam Me Up Music) explains that P.M. means Palm Mute.

Beginners learning music have to acquire mechanical techniques that must be practiced until they seem innate in order to produce a performance which adds elements that seem artistic. Modern recording techniques have allowed fans to become familiar with the most sophisticated performances of pop songs as the modern form of artistic expression, with tremolo, trill, vibrato and staccato being just a few of the techniques that remain from the classical skill set. Bending notes is a guitar trick that can be indicated in this book ranging from Microtone (to the equivalent of half a fret) to a whole step and a half. The slide notes provided by Gtr. 3 in "If It Makes You Happy" don't start until after the vocal line "You get down, real low down." Then Gtr. 3 has eleven eighth notes before its first half note with seven slides between them, but the slides are all between two tones of a pattern that has just three musical tones. After the line "You listen to Coltrane, derail your own train. Well who hasn't been there before?" the slide goes up to a higher set of three tones, but with only four slides for ten notes. At 98 beats per minute, each slide is taking place within three tenths of a second.

People who have the Sheryl Crow CD with these songs can look at the CD to see what the other songs are. I actually like songs that are the easiest to learn. Some of my favorites have a pattern of four chords that repeat throughout the song. "Home" shows four chord charts under the title on page 62 and those chords dominate the song and the ending on page 75. Only two additional chords occur in the Bridge on page 68. Finding words might be a problem for people who don't automatically know them well enough to think of the right verse when the music is repeating. Verse 2 appears in eight lines at the bottom of page 75, under the legato slides shown for the last three measures of "Home." Verse 1 has words under the vocal notes on pages 62-64. Once the chorus starts and three guitar parts are shown, there are only four measures on page 64, five measures on pages 66 and 67, six measures on pages 68 and 69, and nine measures on each page 70-72. Words for the vocal part on Verse 3 are under the notes on pages 71-72. Most rock music does not show notes for vocal harmony parts, but the blend on the chorus of "Home" is so important that small notes are shown on pages 64, 65, 66, 70, and 71. The harmony only has four musical tones, but with so much going on, it certainly helps to know what they are and when they change. One person with a guitar can feel great doing this song until it gets to that part, but then what?

Sheryl Crow rocks and this music book is great. It's easy to use and understand. I haven't learned all the songs on it, but her songs are so much fun to play and sing along to and having the sheet music for all her songs help. All the guitar parts aren't exactly like hers, but it's real close and still sounds great.

Each one of Sheryl's albums are magnificent in their own right, although when this was released it was the better of the first two albums. Each song is class in the first degree. I'm fairly new to guitar playing, but I found this tab book allowed me to play along with all of the tracks quite quickly.

This book examines the construction of national, regional, and group identities in the football journalism of five European countries: England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Notions of the respective national stereotypes are explored in each of the countries studied: for instance, is the stereotype of the French as a nation producing stylish, elegant football teams reflected in all European countries? Are there differences in the reconstruction of the traditional image of the Germans being efficient and technically competent? Similarly, the perpetuation of diverse regional identities within the nations in question is also explored: how is the existence of regional movements in Spain, for example, portrayed by football writing in that country? Finally, group identities such as those of black players (in England), foreigners (in Italy), or women (in France) are analysed with a view to understanding how football writing reconstructs traditional images of such groups.
The book is based on detailed studies of the language used in football match reports and related articles appearing in a representative sample of quality daily newspapers including "The Times", "Le Monde", "Suddeutsche Zeitung" and "El Pais".
