Overview of all things animated.......2007-04-23
This was a required text for my Animation 101 course. I knew nothing about animation, but I do now! This book is great for beginners as it starts with the history of animation from cave drawings to the first animated short and moves to cel animation before ending at computer animation. It thoroughly goes through all the different types of animation; cel, stop motion, go motion, cut out, claymation, computer, etc. It's also nice because it shows the benefits of storyboards and having the right equipment for doing certains types of animation.
Easy to understand.......2007-01-10
I am new to animation and this was only the 4th book I bought. At last I have bought a book that is not collecting dust on the bookcase. I have read this book cover to cover and know now why I was interested in the subject. Why would I want to go and do one of those numerous 'courses' that various institutions offer. This was far more enjoyable and may I take this opportunity to thank Chris Patmore, the Author. Because each page was so interesting it did not feel like I was learning. Second time around I read the book in front of PC and tried out each chapter - everything worked like a dream.
Glossy and Forgettable.......2006-11-09
Lots of colorful pictures but little substance. The author writes from a technological standpoint but also seems to consider himself an expert on animation. He's not, and his authoritative misinformation is often laughable. I'd quote a couple points, but I can't be bothered to pick the thing up again. Try "Fundamentals of Animation" by Paul Wells, and of course the Richard Williams book.
A nice little book.......2006-11-04
I recommend this book if you want an overview of the animation craft. It is well illustrated, and the information is accurate. The scope of what it covers makes it impossible for the authors to go into great detail about each and every aspect of the business, but the book is full of valuable information.
It is not a waste of time or money.
Want a good start in your animaton career? Here's one........2006-03-01
A very good book that cover the basics for animation. It surely will make the younger ones want to start right away, and if you're a little bit older it will be a useful guide to start animation as a hobby or take a first look at it as a career. Chapters cover all aspect from essential equipment, how to write a good story, develop interesting characters and how to make all this come to life! (no mater you like cell animation, 3d, or web based) Did I mention there's plenty of images and tips? This book is up to date and if you want to go further in this art the book gives plenty of "Do it yourself" activities and includes a vast bibliografy depending on the subject. Give at try you'll like it.

Book Description
How does a cookie-baking Rat named Bob save his tail from being gobbled by two hungry cats? By serving them cookies and telling them
fantastic fairy tales about his family, of course. There's the story about great-grand uncle Mustard who upgrades his family to a lovely three-bedroom brick house. (All's well until some wolves with snout-warts show up.) And there's the one about how starving Grandma Lois was forced to take a job spinning straw into gold. (Impossible to do . . . until a hairy chimney troll comes along.)
With allusions to classic fairy tales, plus a storytelling rat to rival Scheherazade, this book—which also includes black-and-white illustrations, a family tree, and a map of Bob's neighborhood—is sure to hold both cats and kids captive.

Absolutely Captivating!.......2007-05-10
Guaranteed to capture the minds and imaginations of your children. This is a collection of wonderful short tales as told by Bob, the cookie-baking rat, in his clever effort to stave off two very hungry cats... The stories are short enough to keep the attention of toddlers and allow for breaks... oh yes, did I mention the cookie breaks? Another wonderful work by children's author Mary Hanson!

Fishing Is Companionship Not a Sport........2007-02-04
In his book, 'Rock Elephant,' Sam Venable quotes Henry David Thoreau, "many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after." Thus is life. In 1982, my brother spent time with his troubled grandson "going fishing." Though Ralph was uneducated in books, he was a master at endurance and perserverance in the ongoing education at the school of hard knocks. Life is hard for some no matter what they do.
Fishing is all about love and companionship, even a long-lasting friendship of sort as shown in Sam's book. I went fishing exactly once that I can remember. I could not sit still nor be quiet as a young girl; the end of fishing for me. But many people (men and women) get great enjoyment from going out in a boat on the Tennessee River (at Clifton and in Knoxville) and spend hours just lazing and getting Vitamin from the sun. In 'Suttree,' the protaganost was a fisherman who lived the night life on the river as Tammy's paw did in the movie, living on a riverboat. I know someone who spent a year on a boat in Alaska. Now, with those long cold nights and below zero temperatures, fishing is on the ice and not the open waters. Soon, though, with the global warming, the fish will be jumping in the boats to get out of the hot water.
One young man in Pulaski would go fishing with his dad in hip-high boots. They would just grab a fish without a rod and reel or fish hooks (those dangerous things which can cause a lot of pain if you mistakenly let it slip and get caught in your hand) and I could not believe they'd call that fishing. The carp (enormous things) are near the Volunteer Landing and want to be fed. My favorite food has always been fish since the young days when we'd go to the town square every Saturday and eat fish at a diner. In Alabama, I learned to love the taste of catfish when I was able to go on Fridays to eat all you can for one price and even take some home. Too bad all the country does not have such specials.
Fishing is more than a pastime; it is a way of life for those who make a business out of selling what they catch. In the Northeast, there are trawling boats out in the ocean who bring home the bacon (no--fish).

Amazing vignettes about people who never were.......2007-07-17
This is a collection of stories about the people Tom Bodett met in Homer, AK, reimagined as The End Of the Road, AK. The characters are composites, fine, and the stories ae no doubt apocryphal; but you'll laugh and cry and wince and mourn and rejoice as these fine folk live this thing we call life.

Book Description
The fifth edition of the book is the most major revision yet. Written in a friendly and engaging manner, Biopsychology clearly presents the fundamentals of the study of the biology of behavior but makes the topics personally and socially relevant to the reader.
Four interwoven themes support the major recent developments in the rapidly changing field of biopsychology. Thousands of new references and dozens of new topics have been added to this edition, making Pinel's discussion of and focus on the human element easy and interesting to read.
For those interested in physiological and biological psychology.
Customer Reviews:
Cerebral topography and much more - this is the best.......2007-04-30
I have just read Pinel's excellent work called BIOPSYCHOLOGY. Illustrated by his partner (sic) Maggie, superbly, and contributing greatly to the success of the book as a great teaching medium in neuropsychology and neurology. It is a textbook for undergraduates in Psychology and assumes little in previous physiology and anatomy, using extensive explanations of vocabulary and concepts. Frankly, you might as well buy this one instead of the Pinel's brain coloring book. It will cost more but you will get a lot more out of it along with the same high quality of illustrations necessary to understand this challenging subject. John Pinel has an engaging writing style, some surprising personal anecdotes, and many case histories. I highly recommend BIOPSYCHOLOGY.
ha, ha!!.......2007-04-03
Ha, ha!! I have to put in my 2 cents after reading the review by Sergiu P Codreanu. The section on sleep was one of the ones that was not assigned in my biopsych class, and for good reason. All the information Pinel uses is from the 1970s, and is not all research. Some of it is just reporting of anecdote. I was so amazed after I read Pinel's comments that I contacted a student working on a PhD in circadian rhythms, who said that the cited material was all either urban myths or discredited research. So, some parts of the book are not only worthless, they're counterfactual!! Just what you want in a textbook!! (Oh, by the way, did you know that heroin addicts are all just whiners because withdrawal isn't any worse than a case of the flu? Yeah, that's right, you can experiment with drugs because the side effects are all over-blown.)
As to the rest, the fact that Pinel constantly delves into the details of single research papers leaves the impression that the book is speculative rather than conclusive. It also made it, for me, hard to follow the material. I like to skim first to get an overview of the reading, but you can never tell with Pinel what's going to be an important discussion and what's not.
I hated this book and learned far more about biopsych after reading "Animals in Translation" the summer after the course was over. I only give 2 stars because the graphics are good. Someone needs to steal Pinel's graphics and put them in a decent, accurate textbook.
Oh, and one more thing: the 5th edition is almost exactly the same as the 6th edition. My instructor really tried to twist my arm saying she didn't want me to miss out on any updated info in the new edition. So, after getting my used 5th edition, I went through the book chapter by chapter and section by section. The books are the same, with the exception of 2 page numbers!! What a scam!
Biosych Short cuts Review.......2007-02-03
The book was in good condition, but i returned it because it wasn't what i wanted. I wanted the actual txtbook.
Love the book but CD needs work.......2006-12-13
I absolutely loved this book. It really made learning my class material a more pleasureable experience. However, BEWARE of the practice quizes on the CD. They don't work correctly. Here and there, the answer marked correct is wrong and it doesn't tally your score (which is easily fixable by paying attention). But, I have to wonder if I got something wrong on one of my tests as a result of the CD answers being wrong. So, be careful with the CD.
The book however is informative and explains the material in an understandable manner as long as one has some prev knowledge of psychology at the intro level.
He even includes cognitive neuroscience in almost every chapter which biases me because I work in that field.
So, all in all, book is great but watch out for the CD.
CD is self-congratulatory and virtually content-free .......2006-02-19
While I agree with other reviewers that the text is good and the graphics in the text are outstanding, the CD that accompanies the book is a shocking waste of time.
Pinel has videotaped himself awkwardly addressing his imagined readers and foists these segments on the user at odd points throughout the CD. Each chapter contains a set of flash cards, a single multiple choice quiz, and a list of supplemental readings. The flash cards are of some use, the quiz doesn't provide correct answers for missed questions and yields only a superficial evaluation of the student's performance, and the list of readings is short (three or four citations) and without Web links.
One has the impression that the CD was included because it's de rigueur for college texts in the $100+ price category these days. Neither Pinel nor his editor seems to have any idea what content would actually be useful on a CD, e.g., a variety of quiz types, pre- and post-tests with specific reading remediations in the text for missed questions, animations of text content (rather than silly visual-space-ship-tracking exercises), Web links to supplemental material, and so on.

This unique and quirky creation is sure to become a year-round favorite of lefties everywhere.
