A relatively thin book, Essential Computer Animation Fast is rich in information, a hand up from an experienced teacher and talented writer. For anyone who is interested in the topic, this book is a solid first reference.

Opening with a short history of computer graphics, it quickly chronicles the development of computers and computer animation software, progressing to the fundamentals of computer graphics and animation. Occasionally, it gets technical, as in a discussion of the different modeling paradigms: Bézier curves, NURBS, and surface patches. These topics make good reading, although many contemporary computer graphic artists are rather far removed from them.

Essential Computer Animation Fast describes lighting methods, types of shadows, the principles behind inverse kinematics, motion capture, and hardware; but not particularly deeply. In fact, the discussion on post-production techniques (a critical step in any animation production) could have been considerably longer than its seven pages. The section on animation itself also could have been more in-depth. That said, you will get a wide range of good information.

Computer animation has matured so quickly that even those in the field have a difficult time keeping up. Besides learning all of the foundation material, and just staying up to speed, you have to keep on top of new information daily--new techniques, new software, new approaches, not to mention new artistic trends. Because of this ever-growing mountain of experience, the newcomer is faced with a learning curve whose crest is constantly moving beyond reach. I want my money back.......2002-06-04

The back cover has blurbs like "Incredibly funny' and "powerful comedy" yet none of these quotes are credited to anyone. I suspect they come from the author. The skits are sexist and homophobic, but I could overlook that if they were funny. They're not. Laughs? I couldn't muster a smile. The book is full of misspellings and grammatical errors. AT [the price] a pop, surely they could afford a proofreader. As a bonus you get an ad to order "Bible tracks". Someone should tell the author there is no such thing; I'm sure he meant Bible tracts. I wasted my money.

Jim's deepest book yet.......2006-02-28

I just finished "Letters" and I gotta say, what a tremendous book!! It is a different text than ones previously written by Jim and truthfully, I was exceptionally impressed by the intimacy. Mr. Burke reveals so much of his true self -- both as a person and as a classroom educator -- that I now feel like I know him as a friend now that I have read this book. In certain places, it's literally like a stealing a wonderful glimpse into a man's soul -- really good stuff!!!

Obviously, Jim has a gift for words. The voice of the book is strong, distinct and nakedly honest-which I absolutely loved. If there is one element which might have been my favorite, it's the fact that Jim never skirts away from the confusion, the lack of surety and the imprecision of our profession. (NOTE: I am a teacher as well.) What we do is so much more art than science and in this world of standardized tests which only measure us in a scientific manner, Jim unabashedly address the "grey" in an NCLB universe that only evaluates the black and white. To be so brave about this admission, the conceit that, "Hey, there are times when I am simply going on faith here and there I times I fall flat on my face," is bold. Especially because society's impression of what an educator should be is so unrealistic.

The misperception about educators is that they are professionals who should know exactly what they are doing at all times and know exactly how to do it in an effective manner which can be statistically quantified by evaluations and measurements. And Jim spends quality time saying, "Hey Joy, it's cool to flub it up. That's how you learn to become better in a job where you never stop either striving to become better or learning." But society doesn't want to hear that. Not when Joy's students are the ones who will ostensibly suffer. No parent wants their kids to be taught by a teacher who is inexperienced and lacks educational mastery. Yet, Jim so honestly admits that even he, the author of 13 books, an award winning veteran of the classroom, a dedicated professional (which, BTW, Jim Burke's commitment to education is the HIGHEST I have ever seen - it makes me feel like a complete and total slacker), blah, blah, blah... even Jim Burke still finds himself "flubbing it up" now and then. This book is just so human.

In my estimation, Mr. Jim Burke is to be saluted for giving voice to the paradox that is teaching. We strive to be great but we are set up by the public education system at large to be mediocre at best, with too little time, too many students and not enough resources. Yet still, we forge on.

And this book inspired me to keep doing so.

Read this book -- you will be a better person for it!!!

Keep This At Your Side.......2006-02-13

I met Jim Burke five years ago when I purchased his book The English Teacher's Companion. It remains an invaluable source in my practice. Since then, I have added each one of Mr. Burke's books to my collection and have always found relevant and concrete information that I can take into my classroom the next day or use over the course of a unit. Jim Burke's Letters to a New Teacher is the next best thing to having Jim Burke in the room next door.

In the book, coauthored with Joy Krajicek, Mr. Burke allays the fears of a first year teacher who seeks advice on a range of topics-from classroom discipline to teaching writing to creating a unit. Each response, written in a convivial style, offers concrete solutions to Joy's problems and has already proved beneficial to me in the middle of my sixth year teaching. When creating a unit, for example, Burke offers several specific suggestions that will allow the teacher to create steps that assure student success. When teaching writing, this book has helped me to see that not only is learning to write is a process, but also learning to teach writing is as much of a process. Perhaps the most valuable lesson I learned from this book is that it helped to reaffirm for me that accepting the calling of being a teacher means accepting an eternal process of learning. There never will be an end, per se, only a deepening.

Burke includes several poems in his responses to Joy. Each one helped me to rethink what ideas I have about the teaching profession, about my students and about the ideas I have for my classroom. I strongly recommend teachers add this title to their collection. The letters in it will only help to reach for the excellence in ourselves that we demand of our students.

A Fountain of Encouragement.......2006-02-08

Jim Burke is one of those rare people who, when you ask him a question, turns and looks you full in the face before he gives you a reply. You get the sense that he is really listening-ruminating over his own appreciation for the question as well as his desire to genuinely answer. Jim Burke is an inspirational teacher; his books have long been a source of support and wisdom. What is so wonderful about "Letters" is the insight Jim and Joy give into the very real questions, struggles, and satisfaction we all experience as teachers. It is refreshing to read such a honest portrayal of the hearts of two teachers. I came away from the book hopeful, knowing that there are others asking the same questions I ask, even in my fifth year in the profession. Reflective teachers will relate to this book and be helped by it, no matter how long they've been at the job.

Deeply moving and touching a controversial issue.......2007-10-01

Unlike her other love & suspense novels, Joy Fielding has this time written a quite different book.

"The First Time" is the story about Mattie, her successful attorney husband Jake and their teenage daughter Kim. It's not Jake's first fling, but after 16 years of marriage, he has finally decided to leave Mattie and Kim for his mistress Honey.

Mattie is determined to carry on by herself. She has had enough of Jake's unfaithfulness and finds life as a single mother taking care of 15 year old Kim, better than a sham of a marriage.

Until tragedy strikes and life is changed overnight.

At first it may simply seem a situation too cruel and impossible to understand. A situation which necessarily calls for acceptance and duty, but which otherwise seems totally unreal. However, as the situation develops, "love works in mysterious ways", not only in a newly awakened love (it was probably never there), but love wakened for the first time.

The answer to many of Mattie and Jake's differencies during their marriage lie in their childhood. The situation they are all of a sudden facing, make them get closer to each other. As for the first time they share the ghosts they both carrie with them, feelings emerge and slowly a new and deep love grows between them.

Joy Fielding has written a serious book. This is not only a touching love story, it's a story about the strength of loyalty, care and love between two people.

I know many reviewers have reacted to Mattie's mother giving her daughter the medication she requests when "it's time". I understand the many objections. This is a very difficult and much discussed issue, where people not the least from the medical profession and the clergy highly disagree. It's also my only objection about this book. I think it would have been wiser to let the situation be solved differently than in this very controversial way. It opens for so many opinions, personal feelings - it's so enormously serious. This is a topic for a whole different book in itself, and should not be brought up lighthandedly.

In spite of this, I have given the book five stars. It is, after all, a matter of opinion also on the part of the author.

Otherwise, I felt very strongly about Mattie and Jake's story. "The first Time" reminds me of a Swedish poem I once read about newfound love in the middle of war - (badly translated) "How can love bloom so wonderfully beautiful?"

Emotions and Relationships.......2007-04-05

Not a mystery or romance, but this novel is full of emotions as the characters relate to each other.

I gave it 4 stars because i didn't think it was as good as this author usually writes. I would still say it was a good read just didn't meet with the usual quality.

Best Book I've Read in Years.......2004-09-02

I read this book about 5 years ago, but I loved it so much, I always recommend it to everyone. I have since read every book Joy Fielding has written, and have loved them all. Not a romance, and not a mystery, but about human emotions and relationships. Lovely book.

Pretend to Love Me!.......2004-04-08

The inside flap claims this is a page-turner, it doesn't disappoint. It is the story of a woman and her relationships. Mattie Hart is a beautiful woman living the American Dream. She has a fulfilling career, successful Husband, and a beautiful child but her life is a series of lets play pretend. Pretend to be the all American family, pretend your husband isn't having affairs, and pretend everything is perfect.

The truth is her 16-year marriage is a sham; her husband never loved her and only married her because she was pregnant. His string of adulterous relationships is now part of their everyday life. At 36, Mattie Hart is thinking instead of just going with the flow things are getting ready to change. She loves her husband even with his infidelities, she loves her life, but she wants to be loved, needs to be loved. After a short series of life altering events she demands: Loyalty, Passion, and Love from her husband.

Through out this book you discover childhood secrets that alter how you see a relationship, a marriage, and a person. The book does an excellent job depicting how your childhood past really is carried with you in life and how strong those feelings haunt us in adulthood. To say some of the realizations of Mattie's and Jakes life are powerful is an understatement. Both Mattie and Jake struggle with their childhood past to cope with the demons they carry.

This book was an emotional journey of Love and Loyalty amongst a family. Truly Joy Fielding is a wonderful author and I will read more of her work.

Refreshing and inspiring.......2001-03-31

The priests who wrote their stories for this book are so real and inspiring that I wanted to be able to meet them all in person. I loved reading about how they overcame struggles in their vocations in order to find the true and deep Joy and Love that initially attracted them in their inmost hearts. This would be a great gift for any priest to have on his book shelf, or for anybody interested in understanding the personal side of the vocation to the priesthood.
