4 out of 5 stars MORE ART AND BACK STORY TO THE GAME.......2005-11-01

Visions of Treachery is the third volume in this outstanding art collection from the Black Library of Games Workshop featuring images from the mega-popular Horus Heresy collectible card game. 96 pages of full-color art on slick, high quality paper and perfect binding featuring many outstanding artists. However, like the other books in this series, Visions of Treachery is NOT just a collection of pin-up page paintings but rather high quality content accompanied by text which offers a high degree of back story for fans of the game. The text serves to add greater depth of character and story to an already well-written product.

Alan Merrett writes the additional text. Some of it is merely capsule information which fine points certain characters, Space Marine Legions, and events, but there is also several short stories, 1 - 3 pages in length, which detail specific battles and such. For Example the "Battle of Prospero" and "Rogal Dorn Emperor's Champion" are very well-written stories. Is this additional material necessary to play the game? No...but it does add a lot of background and color to the game and shows how much thought and creativity was put into the game. I enjoyed the information on the Space Wolves and other legions.

The art in the book ranges anywhere from small illustrations to full page paintings. The quality of the art does vary widely. Some of it is just average while the very best from such notables as James Ryman, Chris Dien, and Franz Vohwinkel are truly outstanding pieces. Some of my favorite pieces in the collection are: "The Sigil of Malcador" by John Gravato, "Dark Champion Erebus" by Franz Vohwinkel, "Astelan, Champion Master of the Dark Angels" by Sam Wood, and "Comech Dreadnought" by Andrea Uderzo. These are all suitable for framing and are just beautiful pieces.

The book also offers a number of preliminary and concept illustrations that would eventually take shape as one of the finished pieces in the card game. I found myself enjoying the book a great deal even though I personally don't play the card game. The art is fantastic and the book is very nicely done.

      Product Description

Jacobi was the fourth generation of her family to seize a camera to earn a livelihood. In a career that began in the decadent Berlin of the thirties and ended in a simple New Hampshire home, the images she produced - and most especially the portraits - border on the iconic. Throughout her long career, she was irresistibly drawn to artists and writers, musicians, poets and scientists. For over fifty years, she recorded figures who shaped our world and defined the course of the last century. Her portraits of intellectual celebrities like Martin Buber, Käthe Kollwitz, Albert Einstein, May Sarton, and Robert Frost, all done quickly, surely, and with a deceptive simplicity, are masterful in their delineation of character, and their probe for lineaments of intelligence.

Beyond her career in photography, she also served as an official delegate for the arts in Washington, as a mentor to young people, and as an environmental activist. Although there have been previous books about Jacobi, there has never been anything available that compresses her life, her thought, and her most singular images into one affordable volume. Here - drawn from interviews, the material at the Jacobi Archives at UNH, and her own work and words - is a capsule survey of a memorable woman and a career that spanned five decades.

I do recommend this one isntead of buying the book, because reading one by day will make it more easy to remember, however I gave it 4 stars because I dont like the idea of not giving you a worst case scenaria situation for every day, because in some days you will get an history fact about survival, tough you may like it.

                    2 out of 5 stars 25% survival tips - 75% rubbish.......2003-01-23

Don't bother purchasing this calendar. It neither functions as a calendar (it doesn't display either the week or month ahead) or as a surival guide.

Take my tip and give it a miss.

2 out of 5 stars This calendar is not far from a "Worst Case Scenario".......2003-01-10

For those who love the Worst Case Scenario books, prepare yourself for disappointment. The books are filled with hilarious "how to" diagrams and instructions, but this calendar only has those for about half of the days--the remaining days are marked by anecdotes presented as "Today in Survival History" and "Today's Hero." These things are just not very interesting or funny and bear no consistency with the spirit and humor of the books and how-tos. They are just plain lame.

                    So consider this:

HOW TO AVOID BEING BORED BY THE WORST CASE SCENARIO DAILY SURVIVAL CALENDAR

                    1. Don't purchase it (stick with the books);

                    or

                    2. If purchased, carefully and completely tear off the pages entitled "Today in Survival History" and "Today's Hero" and deposit them in the nearest waste receptacle by wadding them up into compact, ball-shaped mounds and either throwing or placing them in such waste receptacle. If unsuccessful, re-attempt with greater force and/or accuracy.

                        Book Description

Using a unique combination of cultural studies research, neo-pragmatist philosophy, and psychoanalytic theory, the author sheds light on the formation of a social identity and the important role that mass media play in this process. Case studies covering a range of media and communities provide a model for developing a truly explanatory as well as descriptive account of self-media interaction that bridges the two opposing sides of the media audience debate and provides a significant new dimension to notions of "passive" and "active" media audiences.

Warren Beatty’s first job was as a rat catcher in a Washington, D.C., theater. When Jack Nicholson first arrived in Hollywood, he sorted fan mail for the cartoon characters Tom and Jerry. Alan Ladd was discovered operating a hotdog stand outside a studio. For his fifty-fifth birthday, John Barrymore was given a naked woman wrapped in cellophane. George Hamilton used to throw away his socks after wearing them only once. Tough guy Charles Bronson was so poor as a kid that he wore his sister’s hand-me-down dresses. Judy Garland was turned down for a role in the Our Gang comedies. Ronald Reagan rejected the role of Rick in Casablanca, later made famous by Humphrey Bogart. Jean Acker locked “the Great Lover,” Rudolph Valentino, out of their honeymoon suite on their wedding night. Errol Flynn had a trick chair in his house with a cushion that when touched became a giant inflatable penis.

The history of Hollywood is filled with the strange, bizarre, and the unbelievable. The seventy lists in Hollywood's Most Wanted™describe in amusing detail Hollywood’s top-ten worst movies, most dreadful performances, biggest bombs, funniest real names, sexiest blonde bombshells, most intriguing mysteries, most audacious publicity stunts, oddest couples, most inauspicious debuts, weirdest pre-acting jobs, most scandalous behavior, strangest deaths, and more.

3 out of 5 stars Mistaken fact about Hayley Mills in this book.......2002-10-15

On page 138 of this book it claims that British movie star Hayley Mills was 18 in 1966. Wrong! In 1966 Hayley Mills was 19 and then 20. Hayley in fact was born in 1946. For the book's statement to be true she would have to have been born in 1947 or 1948.

4 out of 5 stars The story of AMW's roots and initial success.......2001-11-08

Although not quite up-to-date (this book was released in 1990), `America's Most Wanted: How TV Catches Crooks' gives the average AMW viewer an inside look at the various things that go into making an episode of Fox's legendary crime-busting show. Also discussed is the conception and creation of the show, which was originally a mere half-hour segment, rather than the full 60 minutes seen today. An interesting part of AMW's genesis was the search for a suitable host. One of the candidates was a certain New York prosecutor named Rudolph Giuliani. The Fox folks decided not to go with him, though, because they felt the future New York mayor's political ambitions would cause him to use the show merely as a stepping-stone to get into political office. It was a decision which, in hindsight (at least according to most New Yorkers) eventually turned out to be the right call.

Then there's the most important part of putting an AMW segment together: selecting and producing the various criminal profiles that are submitted, as well as the process of casting for the re-enactments. Then there's the scouting of locations to shoot the scenes, as well as the host spots whenever Walsh goes on location. The book also goes into detail about some of their most notable captures in the series' first two seasons, including David James Roberts, the first capture the show was credited with, and John Emil List, who was caught almost 20 years after slaying his family. Although described in much more detail in `Tears of Rage', there's also a section that describes John Walsh's tragedy that led him to crusade for children's & victim's rights, and eventually end up as host of the show. Other bits include an appendix featuring the first 80-some-odd captures credited to AMW, and a brief interview with Walsh and the aforementioned Roberts.

Although I found it to be a pretty easy read, this book's almost 400-page length took a while to get through. And even though it's dated by over a decade, it does give the reader a good idea of the genesis and history of AMW.

                        Book Description

Often derided as the "boob tube" or the "idiot box," television has nevertheless brought entertainment and information to living rooms everywhere, expanding viewers’ horizons and bringing the world closer together. Arranged in top-ten lists, TV’s Most Wanted™ runs the gamut from the sublime to the ridiculous. After examining the best and worst shows, actors, and moments in the history of television, it will make couch potatoes everywhere reach for their remotes.

When it comes to longevity, the television newsmagazine 60 Minutes holds the record for the most network broadcasts in prime time, while South of Sunset, starring rock legend Glenn Frey as a down-on-his-luck detective, was canceled after just one episode in 1993. Not quite an overnight sensation, George Clooney had already costarred in seven different series, including Roseanne and The Facts of Life, before he hit the big time with ER in the 1990s. The backgrounds of TV actors can be surprising. Bob Denver, the bumbling Gilligan of the 1960s series Gilligan's Island, has a degree in political science and was a teacher before breaking into show business. Meanwhile, in the late 60's, the colorful villains in episodes of the kitschy hit show Batman often had impressive acting pedigrees. Many, such as Shelly Winters and Cliff Robertson, were Oscar winners or Oscar nominees. Casting choices often create unbelievable might-have-beens or disastrous personality clashes. Gene Hackman as the father of the Brady Bunch? It might’ve happened. The show’s creator said Hackman was his first choice for the role. And William Frawley and Vivian Vance, so cute together as Fred and Ethel Mertz on I Love Lucy in the 1950s, absolutely detested each other when off camera. Whether it’s revisiting famous moments or revealing esoteric facts, TV's Most Wanted™ has something for everyone.

My brother got me this book for my birthday two years ago. It is my bible and my life (kind of sad, actually!) Anyways, it's really good and like that other guy said, if you take a few months to memorize it, you'll the X-Files Genius and you can impress your friends with little tidbits of knowledge. For example, what's Scully's home phone number? I'm not telling.. get it and look it up yourself! Note: good book for diehard fans!

5 out of 5 stars Fun trivia for true fans.......1998-04-26

If you think you know EVERYTHING about the best show on television, you're wrong. These guys pull up obscure info and quiz you on it, drawing not only from the episodes but from interviews, books, and magazines. This is a great book and a must for an X-Phile's library! My only complaint: after reading Phil Farrand's lighthearted Nitpicker's Guide, the authors of this book seem really critical. I mean, what's up with their review of "War of the Coprophages"? Lighten up! Other than that, of course, diehard fans will cherish this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stumps the Best.......1997-10-05

I've always considered myself an X-pert. None of my online friends (or real life for that matter) has ever been able to stump me on X-Files trivia. I'm completely addicted to the show and have 15 books.

This one is definately one of the best, pointing out many of the nitpicks and netpicks we've philes have already discovered in addition to new ones that sent me back to look for them. The trivia is extremely difficult and interesting.

I recommend this book to all philes who think they know it all. Take a few months to memorize this book and then you will know it all.

                        5 out of 5 stars Fun & Challenging.......1997-07-16

It seems everybody is doing an episode guide, but this book is different...it is all trivia, behind-the-scenes, and nitpicking. Loads of fun if THE X-FILES is your weekly fix. My son and I used it as a game to keep us occupied on a flight from NYC to San Diego as we tested each other's knowledge of our favorite TV show. I highly recommend this book...Must reading for X-Philes

Over 1,000 questions from the first three (3) seasons of my favorite TV show in a challenging format to test the gray cells of my brain. How would I describe this book: An X-Files version of JEOPARDY! More than just something to read...a book to play and damn well worth the $$$. I highly recommend it to any die-hard X-Phile
