Book Description
On a farmlike compound near New Hope, Pennsylvania, George Nakashima, his family, and fellow wood-workers create exquisite furniture from richly grained, rare timber. Tables, desks, chairs, and cabinets from this simple workshop grace the homes and mansions and executive boardrooms of people
who prize such excellence. In this lavishly illustrated volume, George Nakashima allows us in intimate look at his artistry, his philosophy, his life. It is the portrait of an artisan who strives to find the ideal use for each plank in order to "create an object of utility to man and, if nature
smiles, an object of lasting beauty."
The author's search for the meaning of life took him as a young man to Paris, Tokyo, and Pondicherry, India. In India, he found the inner peace for which he had been searching and began to find ways to work with timber. He writes movingly about the grandeur of ancient trees and stunning figured
woods and explains how he selects and prepares his materials. Above all, he impresses us with his devotion to discovering the inherent beauty of wood so that noble trees might have a second life as furniture. The Soul of a Tree looks at the world through the eyes of an artist and evokes the joy of
living in harmony with nature.

He is a rarity.......2007-01-26
Able to tug at you in so many ways. A privilege to be able to buy his product.
great book - a woodworkers essential.......2006-09-11
Alot of philosphy, mostly biographical, has a few quotes that stick:
"Man has the audacity to try to improve the tree...."
This is a MUST read for a woodworker.
Gorgeous and inspiring book.......2005-11-27
Like the books of James Krenov, "The Soul of a Tree" is as much a book about philosophy as it is about wood. And it's a good philosophy: slow down, take your time, play with the wood, and enjoy it. The book is really about the soul of Nakashima. He outlines some of his own personal history and how he developed his ideas about craft. There's not really much on technique here - you can certainly find better books for that - but you won't find many more inspiring.
On a personal note I had a lady call me years ago to fix up `some old furniture' she and her husband had bought years ago (in the `50's I believe.) Seems when they were young college professors they found this young oriental guy down the road who made furniture in his garage. When I looked at the furniture I told her that her young oriental friend had become quite famous and showed her this book. She was flabbergasted. What she wanted me to do was to nail up some chairs that had worked loose over time. I refused, of course, and explained to her that these were valuable pieces that should be cared for properly. I also encouraged her to contact Nakashima's Conoid Studio (if it still existed) to let them catalogue the pieces. Even after years of use by a family with kids living in the sticks the pieces were obviously crafted with meticulous care and held up surprisingly well. It was a real joy to bring them back to daily use.
Pure Style........2001-08-27
The author omit needless wood and carve great pieces of furniture. It is like zen on wood. You will not regret the money you spent on this title.
This man never wasted a single second of his life.......1999-10-30
George Nakashima was not only a master craftsman in his field, he was a genius. He could pick up any piece of wood and at a glance know what the end product would be to its full potential...and more.He would let the wood tell him. Even his simplest of projects 'sing' beauty and finesse. I bought the book for insperation to my own woodworking skills, and learnt much more than i expected. Included in the book is a short biography telling us of his early life, his travelings and how he ended up the man he became, his family, lifestyle, work and good natured beliefs. It certainly gave me insperation towards beautiful woodwork and i like to think I learnt a few lessons in life as well. If i was to me this man and only shake his hand I would feel honoured.......

Surrealistic, 'Avant-garde' from a master photographer.......2001-09-20
Born in an African village in Kenyan, Max Vadukul has chosen to photograph the antithesis of the harsh life of Africa and has focused in on sex, fashion and celebrities. Though it is baffling why such a gifted photographer has chosen stars, scoundrels, sensationalism and sex as his portfolio's focus, he is nonetheless a brilliant craftsman. Vadukul is now a New York fixture in the world of high fashion and glamor. His name was made capturing the `Avant-garde' along with the `unexpected' in a provocative way.
"MAX", is a massively oversized publication (18" x 14") and when opened, engulfs most coffee tables with iconic faces that have defined our cultural world. Larger than life figures such as, Donald Trump, Salman Rushdie, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Clint Eastwood,, Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and many more fill the pages. This books 200 black-and-white photographs pulsate between the surreal worlds of Hollywood, New York, Paris and New Orleans at Mardi Gras.
Regardless of my desire to see Vadukul use his accomplished skill to photograph Africa and show our cloistered society the daily life struggle of the other impoverished 3 billion people that share this planet with us; one can only recognize the gift that is evidenced through these photos . His photos are often energetic, raw, and abstractly captivating. Besides the crisp headshots, many of his photos capture this neon world with an impressionistic style that Van Gogh might have rendered had he a camera instead of a brush: or Dalai and his surrealism had he a SLR. Very engaging nonetheless. Recommended 4.5 Stars
Max Vadukul.......2001-06-14
Fashion photography in recent years has simply been reduced to erotica with the exception of a few. Max Vadukul is one of these exceptions. He offers a refreshing lift from this erotic new age and gives you simply briliant, simple, and well thought out photographs. His style is not pressured, he simply gives visualy pleasing photographs. I am an avid collector of photographs and somewhere along the line I discovered his book. Immedeatly I was takin' back by these huge stunning images and I bought the book. After that I took it immedeatly to G. Ray Hawkins. G.Ray is a very reputable and famouse art dealer. He too was taken back by these images. G. Ray is now representing him and is going to do a gallery for Max in a few months. This to me is proof that Max Vadukul is going to effect the art world greatly in future years. The book is huge and has wonderful picture resolution.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
When I found this, I was pretty impressed. It reviews as well as gives a bibliography, and talks about what particular series and titles are about, their importance, and other bits and pieces. An absolute bargain at a second hand price, no doubt about it.
Any comics fan will like this, I guarantee.
Your Mind Will Race and Your Fingers Will Dash.......2005-01-08
Yes there is a second edition of this book out there, but you know what, maybe it is nostalgia or the great Frank Quietly cover that makes me like this one a wee bit more.
You will sit there looking at one title and wonder is it there and Bam! there it is. You will challenge yourself to find titles that are not listed. There is a broad range of titles, from golden age to the modern age. Undergrounds, mainstreams, eighties independent movement and implosion are all covered with equal loving care.
Are the reviewers opionated. Darn straight they are but that is what makes this book so much fun. It seems that they really read through all the stuff that they reviewed. Pity the one who had the long run on let's say Action Comics. Yow! My mind might be putty.
Great for helping you catch up on a title you used to follow.
Obscure enough that you can buy it as a gift for the comic fan in your life and they most likely won't have it up on their bookshelf.
My verdict: There is nothing wrong with the 2nd Edition of this guide but if you can score the first cheap why the heck not?
Comic junkies - here's your FIX.............2003-02-05
If you're not a comics fan- this book will essentially be USELESS for you - but if you are a fan, it will be an invaluable to your collection. Brief reviews cover most of the mainstream comic series put out since the late 30's/early 40's - with particular emphasis covering stuff released in the 80's and early 90's. Brief and entertaining reviews cover the high points and low points of many series - along with recommended issues and creators involved. Reviews are not always positive, but always entertaining ( though I still disagree with their review of Warren Ellis' work on HELLSTORM, but I digress ).
If I had ONE complaint, is that the book covers only up until 1995 for most series released - so an update - which apparently is coming in next year or so- is much needed. Even so - it's still an awesome resource to have.
An inexpensive and indispensable reference tool.......2001-10-31
I happened upon this British softcover in my local comics shop, and was extremely pleased with my discovery. In a lot of ways it's as informative and witty as Robert Christgau's similar music "guides," compiled from his work for the NY Village Voice. The sheer volume of printed material covered by the various reviewers is astounding. I should mention that even though this book originated in the U.K., you'll still find listings for obscure American underground comics: no title is too small to merit a mention.
Listings are alphabetical, generally by the name of the starring character or comic title. Many titles are given a thorough analysis, including the histories of relevant characters and the evolution of specific plotlines. The guide also suggests notable issues for collectors, and lists various collections and/or reprints that appear in separate volumes. While it's obvious to this reader that S&A's reviewers all love comics and aren't afraid to gush the occasional superlative, they are also refreshingly candid when reviewing subpar material. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments just flipping through the book at random.
Though this edition will soon be revised (or so I hear) to include more recent comics, I can heartily recommend this guide to comic fans who appreciate the medium as much as their favorite characters. For readers who have pondered collecting comic titles in the periphery of their usual reading material, this book is a great resource for picking and choosing. Last but not least, it's a great book to have at the ready when you have a little time to indulge yourself in the history of comics.

A must for geeks like you and me !!!.......2001-10-04
If you're a comic fan, this book is an unbelieveable reference. It's not a book for people buying comics like they were stocks in the faint hopes of trading them in for riches afterwards, WIZARD-ites out there will be SADLY dissapointed if that's what they're looking for. You want an amazing overview of comics from the 40's to ( around ) 1995, entertaining and insightful commentary and views, this is the book for you. A must-have for any collector, or anyone into popular culture. Hoping for a sequel as my copy is dog-eared by this point.

Customer Reviews:
The Best and Most Complete Comics Reference.......2007-03-04
This book is truly amazing. A team of about ten people has read every issue of just about every comic book and graphic novel ever published in English, and reviews them all in this book.
I used the earlier edition of this book, and then this edition, as my guides in starting to buy and read comics and graphic novels about two years ago. Before then, I hadn't looked at a comic book since I was a kid. Since then, I've bought and read maybe five hundred comics and about one hundred graphic novels published over the past twenty years. I only buy items that get a "recommended" rating in this book, and I've been disappointed only a handful of times. I would estimate that I'm about a tenth of the way through all the recommended items, and that only about one twentieth of all the items they review get recommended.
If you want to start reading comics, this book is a must-have.
A Breathtaking Comic Book Reference.......2005-06-04
As a comic book collector of 27 years, it's hard to shock or impress me with a reference book. This one did. 787 pages of small print, detailed reference on almost every comic book printed from the beginning to 2003 when this was printed.
What makes this so different from many of the offerings out there is that this book includes one shots and hard to find small press titles, not just books from Marvel or DC. Are you wondering about something Sirius, Fantagraphics, or even Kitchen Sink put out? This has you covered. Are you curious how many mini-series Wolverine has been in and what the background on those issues is? This book has you covered. It not only lists titles, it gives a description of what happened within a series and pinpoints key issues. What it does not do is give prices, but they're always Overstreet's Price Guide for that.
I'm so impressed with mine I intend to get a few for presents for other comic book collecting friends. This is the perfect addition to any collectors library whether they're a seasoned veteran or a newcomer.
For the newcomer it also provides a dictionary of comic book terminology.
I just can't say enough about this wonderful book. Highly recommended!
You will challenge yourself to find something not in it............2004-11-28
I bought and loved the first edition of the "Slings & Arrows Comic Guide" and wondered if the second edition would pass muster...well it did with flying colors.
Listed by title, some poor people went insane to read pracitically every single comic out there and give indepth reviews of nearly every title. Not every single title is covered- i.e. the Archie Line of books (you would need a seperate book for this line alone but the key Archie titles are)- however other than that exception you will be hard pressed to find titles that are not mentioned.
I found myself leafing through the book from section to section as my nuerons fired and I wanted to check up on this and that. It was a great help for catching up with series that I had lost touch with.
Modern Age - Golden Age and Silver (including the independent implosion of the late late 1980's) are covered.
Great reading and addicting.
Book Description
For women only, this is one of Barbara Johnson's most unique books. With her zany collection of observations about "life between the Blue Lagoon and Golden Pond," Barbara jumps right in, showing women how to survive growing older with courage and joy.
Customer Reviews:
Good title, disappointing content.......2007-06-12
This is a banal loose collection of rambling thoughts and unoriginal observations, many of which are simply quoted from other authors. It seems as though Johnson is attempting to be an older-generation Erma Bombeck and falls far short of that goal. I threw the book away when I had only yawned through half of it.
Funtastic and Clean Humor.......2005-12-30
Barbara Johnson is a joy! Her sense of humor and writing style make this an exjoyable book. Unlike most humor writers, her style is clean and wholesome...no vulgarities. Recommended to every woman who is approaching or is in middle age or older, and is looking at peri-menopause and beyond with dread instead of anticipation. This book is uplifting.! There is some humor that is a bit "corny", but it's a laughable kind of corny. Definitely "thumbs up" for this work!
For Older Readers.......2005-11-02
I'm 49, post-menopausal, and I love the Golden Girls, Erma Bombeck, and The View, but that type of sharp humor is not in this book. This author's humor is mild and corny, with LOTS of capitalized words. You know, for EMPHASIS! That said, it's pleasant to read. Companionable, but not terribly compelling. A nice book for the nightstand, to pick up now and then.
They Are Called 'The Golden Years' For Sure........2005-10-14
This book is "For Women Only" as the seal on the front cover shows. She is somewhere between Erma Bombeck and Fanny Flagg with her type of humor and sayings. This volume was written for those with a sense of humor but, if you've heard all that homespun advice, it's not so funny anymore.
None of the stuff women must live through during midlife crisis would be relevant to men, unless they are married to such creatures; they too have their own type of menopause. Chapter 7 is all about the causes of men, as she makes fun of the male personality. One I liked: "Youth looks ahead, Old age looks back, Middle age looks tired."
While the younger years may be the most fun, many grandmothers enjoy a more meaningful relationship with their adolescent grandchildren during the teenage years. These are times the rebels in the family show their true selves. They tend to turn for solace to loving grandparents during these turbulent times. Teens trust those who have given them unconditional love during their growing-up years and who are nonjudgemental.
Memory is a mental bank account for elders. In it, we deposit the treasures of our lives so that, in time of need, we can withdraw hope and courage. Remembering good memories can make us feel like mental millionaires. One of my heroes, General Douglas MacArthur once said, "Whatever your years, there is in every being's heart the love of wonder, the undaunted challenges of events, the unfailing childlike appetite for what comes next, and the joy of the game. You are as young as your hope, as old as your despair." My doctor told me just today to "give in to the body's need to heal" and to take the needed naps with joy; don't begrudge the "time out" but look forward to six weeks down the road when you can do all the things you did before the invasive surgery. Be accepting of the circumstances and don't fight against your best interests, getting well again.
Ms. Johnson uses an excerpt from one of "Dear Abby" columns called "How to Plant a Special Garden:" First, plant five rows of peas: 'Preparedness,' 'Promptness,' 'Perseverence,' 'Politeness, and "Prayer.' Next to them, plant three rows of squash: 'Squash Gossip,' Squash Criticism,' and 'Squash Indifference.'
Then five rows of lettuce: 'Let us be faithful,' 'Let us be unselfish,' 'Let us be loyal,' 'Let us be truthful,' and 'Let us love one another.' And no garden is complete without turnips: "Turn up for church,' 'Turn up with a smile,' 'Turn up with determination.' Leonard Levinson's quote, "Sorrow is the future tense of love." You've heard that it is better to be safe than sorry. But, telling someone you love that you are sorry you said or did something which made them sad is one of the best things a woman can do.
Yes, this book is for women only; but the jokes about being old apply to the men, too. It's funny -- hilarious to some, I'm sure, but insightful in a way we all need to be reminded.
I laughed until I cried.......1999-10-17
This book was my introduction to Barbara Johnson. Wow, am I ever gonna have to make up for lost time! She's great! I literally laughed until I cried. What a mind! What a sense of humor. I could relate to everything she said. The Bible says that a merry heart doeth good like a medicine. Boy, did I ever get a large dose! I'm buying some extra copies for my "over 50" friends! What better gift than the gift of laughter?
Book Description
The Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet is a practical guide to the world of the clarinet. It offers students and performers a composite survey of the history and repertory of the instrument from its origins to the present day, as well as practical guidance on teaching and playing from historical performance to contemporary techniques and jazz. Informed by the experience of distinguished professional players and teachers, this book makes an essential and stimulating reference book for all clarinet enthusiasts.
Customer Reviews:
The lore and allure of the clarinet - you should have this book!.......2006-08-12
This is a very readable book, in short chapters, that covers a lot of ground in the world of clarinet playing. Each chapter is written by a different person and as a whole provides current thinking about the past, present, and future of the clarinetist's art.
Do you enjoy both practical ideas of how to play as well as philosophical discussion? This is the book for you!
As the Colin Lawson, editor says, this is more a generator of thought about many aspects of clarinet playing than it is a comprehensive study.
There is plenty of information about the early history of the clarinet and the various types in the clarinet family. You will find good information about musical literature including the clarinet.
The chapter by Tony Pay about mechanics of playing is probably the best as Mr. Pay raises many thoughtful points about just how we go about sounding our best as players and musicians.
Equal to the historical chapters are the chapters about the current clarinet scene: jazz, recordings, and contemporary music.
I highly recommend this book!
John Gibson, JB Linear Music and author of Advanced Clarinet Technique; and Advanced Intonation Technique for Clarinets
Fun to read, with articles for experts as well as listeners.......2004-11-18
This is an excellent book. But it is not primarily a guide for clarinetists who want general advice on subjects such as embouchure and reed selection. Jack Brymer's book, "Clarinet," is a guide for clarinetists. This is a book about the clarinet that anyone interested in the clarinet can appreciate. Still, it does include some expert advice on plenty of topics, including embouchure, tone, fingering, synchronization, and so forth.
This is more of a survey of all the different clarinets (as well as their histories), clarinet repertoire, and modern trends. There are nice chapters on the clarinet family, including the high clarinets, the C clarinet, the basset horn, and the bass clarinet. The basset horn is famous for its huge range (four octaves!). But Georgina Dobree explains that it isn't easy to play. You need a soft reed, you have to be careful in all registers. And although it is easy to hit the high notes (especially if you have one of the smaller-bore ones), you may need alternate fingerings to play them in tune. Personally, I think the basset clarinet is a better instrument to learn, if you have the money to acquire one.
Michael Harris discusses my favorite of the clarinets, the bass clarinet. I like it because its range extends far enough down so that one can play a wide variety of parts. Harris again explains that it isn't so tough to hit the highest notes on this instrument, but one has to choose a mouthpiece that lets you hit the next highest octave as well. Roger Heaton's chapter includes some good fingering choices for the highest notes.
Then there are chapters on the clarinet repertoire, players and composers, clarinet recordings, the clarinet in jazz, the mechanics of playing the clarinet, and teaching the clarinet. Then we get some expert advice on how to play historical clarinets, from Colin Lawson. It's written in a style that is interesting for us non-professionals. Next is some explicit advice for the prospective professional clarinetist, from Nicholas Cox.
The most fascinating chapter is by Roger Heaton, on the contemporary clarinet. That covers some topics such as high note fingerings, microtones, and circular breathing.
You don't need to know much about the clarinet to enjoy this book. But to profit from the more expert advice, you need to play the clarinet fairly well already.
A great book.......2000-06-16
I found this book to be the definitive guide for any clarinettist. All I can do is recommend it as the best resource for all. It gives great advice on all aspects of clarinet playing from reed selection to achieving a great embouchure. Buy it !

Book Description
In Catch the Silent Silver, Jim Wilsford offers a collection of poems organized around the themes Of Love, Of Life, and Of Youth. The poems, which may be loving or fun, realistic or painful, physical or metaphysical, each touch true moments and pure images of life.
Wilsford combines Beauty and Truth in extended metaphors. Symbol and image merge in lines such as those from the title poem: ". . . to catch/ The silent silver of the sun's walk/ And edge the gray of the white gull's Wing." Whether formal or informal, free or blank verse, form matches meaning.
Catch the Silent Silver includes several dramatic and narrative poems to portray and explore the meaning and beauty of life. The work also includes poems that are epigrammatic, reflective, and emotional.
In poetry as in life, Wilsford follows the conclusion of the last poem of Catch the Silent Silver:
If you wake to a zigzag day,
You must take the zigzag way.
