Tattoo Review.......2007-01-03
This book is extremely informative, eye-opening & interesting for someone thinking about getting a tattoo. I was very happy with my purchase of this title and have such a more indepth & greater understanding of what is involved with tattooing.
Great buy!
for beginners only?.......2006-02-06
this book is very very fundamental. the black and white photos are small and pretty useless and the color shots could be better.
better books are available
not what i expected.......2004-06-17
im a big fan of body art. i read and research alot about it. i also have four tattoos of my own and plan on getting more. i even dated a tattoo artist for a short period of time. i hung out at the tattoo shop every day and was around 5-10 artists at a time every day. i know my stuff. but by no means am i out writing a book on tattoos.
with that said.
this book was not the "total tattoo book" i expected. it mostly told me stuff i already knew, had bad pictures, and talked way to much about her personal experiences. i was bored and even skipped sentences at times just to finish it. but i did finish it out of respect for the author and give her two stars.
1 star for her efforts
1 star because its about tattoos
A Must Read 4 Tat2 Lovers.......2004-04-06
This book was hard to put down, even though I had homework to do. It has a wide variety of categories explained in plain english for newbies w/ pics. The center has a nice layout of color and b/w photos. It also has a partial directory of tattoo artists in each state (where legal or not).
Not TOTAL tattoo book.......2003-12-10
Well it was a light read and i learnt a little. It doesn't deserve its title of TOTAL tattoo book because its far from complete. The author goes off the track with personal stories on many occasions and forgets what she is supposed to be talking about, so the subtitles in each chapter are loosely connected with the text.
However, i wouldn't totally discourage the purchasing of this book as I was entertained by it. After all any tattoo talk is interesting, although in my opinion the author should have stuck to one genre- either a personal recount of the artists she knows and her experience- or a profesional factual novel in 3rd person.
It was a light read that was enough to pass the time.

Product Description
Unique among geometry or paperfolding books, this is a step by step exploration of reconfiguring the circle using only the nine creases necessary to fold the regular tetrahedron. Diverse information (with numerous drawings and images) about the paperfolding process; geometry, algebra, mathematical observations, transformational movement systems, classroom activities, and discussion about education and the importance of ethics revealed in the WholemovementTM of the circle. A demonstration of teaching geometry and algebra by engaging the problem-solving mind with hands-on folding activities. This process reveals primary patterns that are an important beginning for 5 & 6 year-olds, as well as for older students or art/math teachers. A great companion to his previous work, with more depth and information.
From the author's preface:
When we draw a circle without first having folded circles, we do not know what the image represents that we are drawing. Folding circles is experiential and generates information in a way not found in the drawn symbol. This book offers a direct and simple approach to understanding the inclusive nature of the circle through folding the tetrahedron as a primary function of the circle. I have tried to stay to with what is basic to the nature of pattern and the formation process observed in folding circles and minimized information that is found elsewhere. The recognition of patterned information crosses all educational and cultural boundaries and is crucial to all fields of understanding -- particularly important in the development of young children.
When folding, we observe and reflect on what is generated within the circle, bringing out geometry functions, mathematical thinking, and awareness that help us create clarity in our understanding. Folding circles demonstrates a hands-on process of in-formation generation that is simple, direct, and accessible to anyone who can fold a circle in half.

Customer Reviews:
Great Teaching Tool.......2000-12-22
I love this book! I am in Jewish education, but these are stories that both traditions share. Younger kids watch fascinated as the story unfolds and the paper folds. Older kids can fold along with the storyteller. I will often give the directions to the older kids so they can tell the story again with the folding and teach others. Somehow the folding really adds a dimension to the children's listening and thinking about the story--it's not just a gimmick. But it is also a great gimmick! One can customize the foldings to other stories not given in this book, but I wish the author would come out with another book of folding stories. I am buying this book even as I write this review, because I don't like to depend on my kids' day school library for it--I must have it for my own. I'm also buying the holiday book, though I suspect it's for Christian holidays, but I might be able to customize the stories, and I learn a lot just from the techniques the author describes.

Attractively designed and filled with sharp color photos and numerous, excellent diagrams, Paper Creations offers step-by-step instructions for 40 fun and diverse origami projects. Unique among paper crafts, origami traditionally requires no cutting, gluing, painting, or other embellishment of the paper--all the magic is accomplished purely by folding and manipulating the paper. Each project here is rated by difficulty (from very easy to challenging), so everyone from beginners to experienced origami practitioners can find a suitable project, from boxes and other containers to ornaments and jewelry to flowers and animals (the koala and the howling dog are especially appealing). Those new to the art form will appreciate the thorough beginning section explaining all the basic folds and the symbols used to represent them. The final section discusses various types of paper and some special techniques. In a medium where directions can be needlessly complex and difficult to follow, this book makes success seem surprisingly easy. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
Lovely book........2005-07-22
I've enjoyed origami since I first folded a paper fox in kindergarten in Honolulu. Since then I have learned a number of designs and am always on the look-out for new ones.
Ms Gross' book is a beautifully illustrated volume of designs, both old and new, with many novel ways of using them. In fact, I'd say that the information on uses makes the price of the book more than worth it. The ideas for paper folded jewelry were especially interesting to me as was the information on preserving such articles from damage as might arise in wearing them.
Since I am particularly fond of boxes, I enjoyed the photo fame, useful purses, and the card cases, especially. The boxes she presents are the standard design from a single piece of paper. If found her technique of folding them a little awkward, however, so if you have problems with folding one, I'd check one of the other books for a box with a different folding method. It's in the order of the folds, not in the box itself that the problem arises.
Her method of folding the paper bowl, however is very clear. I've seen the bowl done in other books that make it far too confusing to follow the folds. These books have several lovely designs, however, so it may be that having folded Ms Gross's version of the bowl, one might find the others' designs easier to understand. The more exposure one has to different methods, the easier all origami becomes.
Since I am starting an origami project for my 5 year old nephew, Drake, I found the introductory designs for what amounts to paper dolls particularly useful, and I plan to incorporate them into it.
Overall, a lovely book with lots of useful information and patterns.
Wondeful, lots of interesting & unqiue projects.......2000-05-03
This is a wonderful origami book with lots of interesting & unique projects. It is in full-color on glossy stock. The clear, step-by-step instructions are both illustrated & explained.
The first section covers basic origami symbols, folds & bases as well as folding hints & tips. The projects start out easy and become more complex as the book progresses. I recommend this book for beginning to advanced folders.
Some projects include a gyroscope, lucky star, jack-in-the-box, bowl, purse & a box with dividers & a cover. Others include a sparrow, koala, dog, kissing penguins, flowers, a corsage & a chain of cranes.
The last section covers hanging or making your origami artwork into jewelry. Paper painting & selection as well as wet folding are also covered. A resource guide listing stores & origami societies is a great bonus.
caution-same as earlier book "Origami Workshop".......1997-11-09
I loved the author's book entitled "Origami Workshop" so was thrilled when I read about her latest book "Paper Creations". Well, unfortunately, I never saw the actual book since I ordered it by mail. It is about 90% identical (even used the same photos) as her "Origami Workshop", published in 1995. To give her justice, the first page of the book does say that much was taken from the earlier published "Origami Workshop". Still I think it is a rip-off and misleading to publish the almost identical book with just a different cover and title.
Product Description
The first fully comprehensive practical guide combining a facinating history of the art, an inspirational gallery featuring the work of the world's top origamists, detailed descriptions of paper to use, and over 80 step-by-step projects to entertain, challenge and delight.

Good book for elementary age kids.......2005-02-27
This book is 32 pages of very simple paper folding. It should get 5 stars for a child user and 2 stars for adults. It appears to be best suited for use as an arts and crafts book for children with adult supervision. I intend on using in arts and crafts activities with nursing home residents. If you are interested in paper folding for your own pleasure get something more challenging.
Great Book for All Ages.......2003-11-26
I love this book and have used it for years. I've used it with my grandchildren and with my adult students as part of a craft workshop. Everybody loves it. The directions are easy, the projects fun. I'd recommend one for every kid in the family from two to 92. (Hill is author of the mystery novel The Dead Angel.)

You'll enjoy every page of this heartwarming and stunningly beautiful book. It's the inspiring story of an inspired Canadian. It's also a collection of some of the most spectacular low-level aerial photographs of our country -- a Canada you've never seen before.

Unbelievable, a great gift!!!.......2004-06-30
This book is incredible. I have bought it as a gift and have not had time to read all the comments and description at the beginning, but have gone through all the pictures and most of their descriptions... It is WONDERFUL. I will get many more copies to give to friends and family, the pictures blow your mind, and the descriptions are concice, short, and most of them are funny too. A great buy.
5000 miles on a kite.......1999-04-28
Gift of Wings is perhaps the most powerful and inspiring of the hundreds of books I've read. The fascinating story of a wheelchair traded for wings on 5000 miles journey across Canada. Breathtaking and surprisingly original aerial photographs of a stunningly diversified landscape . Beautiful, philosophical, witty, poetic and joyful. A book with a soul that is sure to touch yours.
A "gift of wings" to those of us born without them.......1997-08-06
Carl Hiebert has freed not only himself but all those who feel the handicap of wingless birth, to soar and glide through the beautiful spaciousness of Canada. The fascinating story of his injury and recovery of spirit to leave the wheel chair behind as he climbed into the skys of Canada with camera in hand, will forever challenge and delight me, an aviator and current healer of injured bodies and minds. "Breathtaking" is a real understatement for this story of beauty

Customer Reviews:
DO NOT buy if you want a serious version of this topic........2005-12-12
I am here to warn you that this book is nothing more than a parody of the things that typically happen within an organization. I was looking for something constructive to use and perhaps buy as gifts for others I know whom are also graduating. This book has proven to be a waste of time for me now. Perhaps when I have lived the life of business for a few years, then I can come back to this book and appreciate its' humor, but now is certainly not that time.
The book I wound up with was recommended by my dean and it is called, "Secrets to Winning at Office Politics : How to Achieve Your Goals and Increase Success". It is definitely the book I was looking for. It is serious and has a great way of relating the topics to the uninitiated. Even if none of the topics within it's pages come true, at least I am in the right frame of mind to be able to realize and absorb whatever does come.
Everyone in the office is fighting over my copy!.......2002-03-11
This book is hilarious! I found out about it when I read a review in the newspaper and went to the website to view sample spreads of the book: soarabovethemadness.com This book perfectly describes some of the stuff we laugh about in our office. One of the funniest parts is near the end where there is a place to make up secret office code names for co-workers! I highly recommend this book for anyone who is stuck in a cubicle and needs some fresh air and a good laugh.
Book Description
Mountain was America's answer to Cream. Drummer Corky Laing and guitarist Leslie West have put together this volume of hilarious road tales. John Lennon (who turned up to West's birthday party dressed as Zorro), the Stones, Keith Moon, the Allman Brothers and Deep Purple are just a few of the luminaries that scatter the pages of this romp through the years when no-nonsense rock 'n roll ruled the planet.

The Language of New Media (Leonardo Books)
ASIN: 0231113447 |
Book Description
How do we explain the fact that certain ideas, at certain moments in time, can have earthshaking effects? Or that some cultures have left an indelible mark while others have not? Why did Jesus, rather than Mani the Mesopotamian or the Eastern god Mithra, take hold among masses of people? Why did Karl Marx instead of Pierre Proudhon or Auguste Comte leave his mark on the century? Behind these questions lies the matter of the human need to conserve, hand down, and transmit cultural meanings -- the study of the means of transmission and of the long evolutionary history of media.
In a departure, Régis Debray redefines communication as the inescapable conditioning of civilization's meanings and messages by their technologies of transmission and lays the groundwork for a science of the transmission of cultural forms -- in a word, mediology.
Transmitting Culture examines the difference between communication and transmission and argues that ideas and their legacies should be rethought not in terms of "communication" from sender to receiver but of "mediation" by the vectors and messengers of meaning. Transmitting Culture stresses the technologies and institutions long overlooked by philosophy and the human sciences in the study of symbols and signs throughout the history of civilizations. Ranging widely from the history of religion and the printing press to the French and industrial revolutions, from the role and place of authority to scientific inquiry, Transmitting Culture establishes a new approach to the cultural history of communication.
Customer Reviews:
An insightful reading.......2001-07-25
For those interested in understanding cultural processes, Regis Debray's Cultural Transmission is a must-read. This underestimated book begins with the question why the Christian faith, and not any other among the Eastern religious movements that competed for converts in Roman times, became the dominant religion of the Western world in the aftermath of pagan Rome. Debray asks a similar question regarding the different destinies of Anarchism and Marxism, the two revolutionary movements of the industrial era. However, Debray's historical concerns rest more on the side of an anthropological history of religion. He notes how the parallelism between the angelic cult of the early faith and the organizational patterns of the early Church contributed to its historical survival. The book ends with a critical appraisal of the theoretical fashions of our epoch. Along the journey Marshall McLuhan encounters Walter Benjamin in an original, remarkable, insightful, and ironic account of how culture is transmitted from one generation to the next. If you have not discovered them yet, Cultural Transmission will let you to the works of André Leroi-Gourhan and Bernard Stiegler. Contrary to the contemporary view that has language and discourse as the dominant entities by which social organization and cultural transmission happen, mediology - the discipline that aims at challenging the dominant theoretical view of culture - focuses on how the means of cultural transmission (e.g., rituals, books, films, Internet web sites, etc.) modify the cultural meanings that are being transmitted. The main argument of this book is aimed at formulating a critique of the ubiquitous theory of discourse that has become the trademark of poststructuralist circles. Debray argues that discourse is always predicated on the technological and organizational means that make it possible its transmission. More important, mediology is aware and critical of both the determinism and the cultural optimism that have been typical of much of the Anglo-Saxon tradition regarding technology. Following André Leroi-Gourhan, Debray sees technology as mediating between the human mind (e.g., ideas, language, etc.) and the human body (e.g., behavioral reflexes, cultural skills, etc.). From this perspective Debray examines a gamut of contemporary and influential theoretical positions about culture. Debray is particularly critical of the sociological theories of Pierre Bourdieu. Debray also argues against cognitive theories based on a narrow biological interpretation of human cognition. This book represents an encompassing and stimulating contribution to the understanding of culture.
