Book Description
The influence of music on the development of abstract and mixed-media visual art forms from the early twentieth century to the present day.
This ground-breaking new book and the exhibition it accompanies trace the history of a revolutionary idea: that fine art should attain the abstract purity of music. Over the past one hundred years some of the most adventurous modern and contemporary artists have explored unorthodox means to invent a kinetic, non-representational art modeled upon pure instrumental music.
Music has inspired some of the most progressive art of our timefrom the abstract painting of Wassily Kandinsky and Frantisek Kupka to the mid-century experimental films of Oskar Fischinger and Harry Smith to contemporary installations by Jennifer Steinkamp and Jim Hodges. While early abstract paintings tended to approach music metonymically, the color organs, films, light shows, and installations from the mid-twentieth century to the present day engage a range of perceptual faculties simultaneously to create a plethora of sensations in the viewer.
The most complete examination of this phenomenon to date, Visual Music features ninety major works of art plus related documentation, focusing on abstract and mixed-media art and the connections to musical forms as varied as classical, jazz, and electronic. The book includes three scholarly essays, each discussing a distinct art historical period in depth, and an additional essay by Olivia Mattis that approaches the subject from a musicologist's perspective, as well as a chronology, artist biographies, and a selected bibliography. 250 illustrations, 200 in color.
With contributions by: Kerry Brougher, Hirshhorn; Jeremy Strick, MOCA; Ari Wiseman, MOCA; Judith Zilczer, Hirshhorn.

Comprehensive, Novel Approach to a History of Abstract Art.......2005-05-24
VISUAL MUSIC is first and foremost a traveling exhibition currently ensconced in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and as an exhibition it is informative, enlightening, well curated, and a unique way to study the history of Abstract Art from 1900 to 2004. One enters the large multi-room experience with a stop in a darkened theater where films dating back to the early part of the 20th century explore pulsating, rhythmic, liquid and explosive images, some in black and white, some in color, some 'illustrating' music from Brahms to Dizzy Gillespie and some in complete silence. The works are by such experimental artists as Oscar Fischinger, Len Lye and Harvey Smith and the films have been restored admirably.
The remainder of the walk through this marriage or courtship of visual images and music includes copious works by Kandinsky, Picabia, Klee, Ciurlionis, Kupka and many others, artists who sought to visualize the effect music has on the intellect and visual/aural 'synaesthesia' as the exhibition repeatedly explains. Some rooms are for framed works, other rooms for video forms of digitalized art in motion, some are simply walls of lines and abstractions and others the idiosyncratic color organs - the true synthesis of visual art and musical performance. The works representing today are from Jennifer Steinkamp in an elegant installation, Cindy Bernard, and Jim Hodges.
Though this is not meant to be a survey of an exhibition, knowing the presentation of this VISUAL MUSIC concept heightens the appreciation of the stunning catalogue that accompanies this show. From the sumptuous design elements to the splendid color reproductions to the scholarly essays, this is a book that is not an easy read but an important one. From Jeremy Strick's cogent introduction to the book through essays on the history of abstraction and the concept of what stimulated artists to relate to music and why, to the significant 'in defense of pure music' essay by Olivia Mattis, this is a magnum opus on abstract art that is unique in every phase. Kudos to the curators from the Hirschhorn (Kerry Brougher, Ari Wiseman) and MOCA's own Jeremy Strick. Grady Harp, May 05.

Masterpiece.......2000-12-18
This is the best book ever written. Whenever I feel sad I read it and it makes me laugh. It provides an entirely fresh and realistic perspective on the modern condition. I think it is one of those books that will be discovered in a thousand years and be the center of a religion or something.
great poetry, brilliant.......1998-02-08
brilliant book, sometimes hilarious, mostly a brutal sobering splash of cold water in your face, for example: a poem that says something like: "well its pretty lonely at the bottom too" haha! that is great: at once funny, cynical, sad, and totally real

A fine survey of evolving Southern culture.......2006-11-06
Any interested in Southern history, culture and social issues must take a look at Looking Beyond the Highway: Dixie Roads and Culture. It follows the Dixie Highway from southern Illinois to Florida with essays which cover a wide swatch of the South and a range of Southern subjects, from the rise and fall of brick highways to changing styles in Southern hotels, architecture, and music and the arts. A fine survey of evolving Southern culture lends plenty of insights into social and political influences along the way.

Book Description
The Lincoln Highway predates Route 66 by a dozen years, runs a third longer than that famed highway, and crosses the country from Atlantic to Pacific. Now the story of the first coast-to-coast route is told in this grand, eclectic history of the road.
Traversing fourteen states from Times Square in New York to Lincoln Park in California, Butko follows the highway in both space and time, mingling excerpts from the memoirs of cross-country travelers in the early days of the road with perspectives from today's voyagers and his own astute observations.
Along the way the story of the highway unfolds, from the spark of an idea in the mind of Prest-O-Lite headlight manufacturing giant Carl Fisher to the formation of an association in 1913 for getting the arduous task of road building afoot, including the resulting disputes over which cities and states the route would pass through. Stories of early adventurers--men and women who traveled the Lincoln in the 1910s and `20s--reveal what early motoring was really like: the good, the bad, and the muddy.
In each state you'll visit historic buildings, bridges, taverns, diners, neon movie palaces, Art Deco gas stations, ice cream stands, tourist cabins, and colorful roadside attractions. You'll also meet people from all walks of life, from every era, who have been on the road as travelers, workers, planners, commuters, vacationers, and just plain Sunday drivers enjoying the scenery. Not merely a geographical link, the Lincoln Highway connects us to the past and that part of ourselves that is always seeking the quest.
This is the trip you've been waiting for.
Customer Reviews:
Best Lincoln Highway book I've seen.......2007-01-18
This book is an excellent reference for the entire Lincoln Highway. Some of the state-specific books may have more detail, but none are easier to follow. It is very well written- flows easily, lots of good pictures. I wish we had this one when we traveled part of it.
The Essential Lincoln Highway Guide.......2006-06-26
Here it is. If you're looking for a terrific guide to places and people along the Lincoln Highway, past and present, you can't find a better guide than this book. Plenty of images, maps, postcards, and other memorabilia place this resource among the very best of roadside guides. Use it for historical research. Use it for trip planning. Use it for armchair tourism. Either way, you'll be glad you bought this book.
An excellent book about an historic roadway.......2005-09-19
Ever wonder what it would have been like to have driven across the country in the early part of the 20th Century, before roads were regularly paved or well-marked? You can get a glimpse of what early travelers faced on the first transcontinental highway by reading Greetings From The Lincoln Highway by Brian Butko.
The book starts off by telling the history of the Lincoln Highway, from its inception and promotion by Carl Fisher and Henry Joy to its eventual replacement by numbered Federal highways. Most of the remainder of the book describes the route of the old highway going west from New York City to its end in San Francisco. The route is described in great detail, enough for one to use it in driving it today. Throughout the text, there are excerpts from the journals and letters of early travelers of the highway. We drivers of today can be glad we don't have to put up with the conditions they faced.
If you are a fan of the historic roadways; if you want ideas for future vacations; if you want to experience life off of the Interstates -- this book is for you.
A lively highway history.......2005-09-06
Think Route 66 is America's oldest or first coast-to-coast road? Well, it gets more publicity, but Route 66 wasn't the first: the Lincoln Highway predates it by a dozen years, runs a third longer, and travels coast to coast. Greetings From The Lincoln Highway: America's First Coast-to-Coast Road provides a lively highway history, packing in the maps which depict the original highway and its changes from state to state, the color photos of local color and highway scenery, and of course the all-important history of the highway's past. From vintage posters and ads to restored old stations and services, Butko' Greetings From The Lincoln Highway follows the highway across the country and provides a very colorful, compelling story in the process.
A great book about a great road.......2005-08-24
Having lived in a city that the Lincoln Highway has passed through for all of my 70 years, I found the book to be a delightful trip down memory lane. The numerous photographs give a wonderful feel for the time when the highway was in its prime and used by millions traveling coast to coast. The book is well laid out and organized and a treat to read, whether you want to browse for a few minutes or do an in-depth read for the couple of hours it would take you to go cover to cover.

Book Description
From the authors of the New York Times bestseller America's Dumbest Criminals™ comes this hilarious volume packed with one hundred new stories of unbelievably dumb criminals. With true stories from real cops, this book shows that crime doesn't pay, but it may make you laugh. Illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
Some real funny stuff.......2002-07-03
Wow, I can't believe the customer who wrote the first review gave it only two stars.
This is one of the best books I've read about law enforcement, showing the lighter side in the world of crime and in light of high-profile cases. Who can seriously resist getting a good laugh out of these dumb crooks?
If I could give it more stars, I'd give it a ten!
Is the title, dumb or alive? or is the people who buy it?.......1999-03-02
I rather think that it is a toss-up whether those who buy this book are the dumbest, or those who are inside it's covers. It was mildly amusing, but little else.

The quintessential '70s arena rock band is uncovered in this authorized biography of Grand Funk Railroad.
Customer Reviews:
I thought it was great!!.......2007-01-05
I bought this used and it was very very detailed......from shows to recording info to insider info....great job Mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lame..........2006-05-13
If you're looking for a book about drugs, debauchery and sordid bedroom tales... this isn't it! I understand that everything isn't about sex, drugs and rock and roll but this book is pretty damn tame. I'm also aware that Mark Farner isn't a saint, but he doesn't let you in on anything. He makes note that he didn't want to talk about these topics and I understand also that the title is called, "From Grand Funk To Grace", but in my opinion it makes Mark out to be a square and seems as if Don was the only bad boy in the band. Since Don did sing "American Band" it only reassures these thoughts. I will admit that the book isn't all "holy roller" but I was disappointed. Put it this way... I listen to Grand Funk with completely different ears now.
Also, I thought it was poorly written and reiterates character descriptions about people you don't really need to read about. In fact, there are so many characters that its hard to keep them all straight. Personally I would've enjoyed getting to know more of the road crew.
You want a good rock book read, "Crazy From The Heat", if you're thinking of never playing rock music, going to rehab, falling in love early and turning to Christ for sins you never committed read this...
Incredibly honest!.......2003-04-08
Having read this book, which I really enjoyed, I must say that I am impressed with Mark Farner's honesty. Seeing the word "authorized" on the cover of this book, my first thought was "Great...here's another one of those books where everything is someone else's fault, etc." However, I have to say that I am totally blown away by how much of his soul Mark Farner bared in this book. He shares so much detail about his life, his admitted mistakes, etc. (both public and private) that there will never be any need for an "unauthorized" biography. Amazing! Definitely worth reading.
A good History of Mark Farner but somewhat Biased........2002-07-22
I just finished From Grace To Grand Funk and I have a few thoughts. One is that on the plus side the book is filled with info about Mark Farner's life, Mark's opinions, Mark's friend's glowing admiration for him, Mark's family life, and hey some good history and antidotes included of the Grand Funk Railroad. Another plus is it also has some good info in the back of the book about concert dates and recordings. On the negative side book is not well written in places; especially the first 1/3 of the book (the pre GFR days) which is very choppy. The rest of the book is better, the flow is way better and even very good at times. The GFR days from 69-76 for instance are written very well and flow very well and there are some funny little stories about life on the road (lot's of amusing anecdotes). But then it turns to 77 to the present and the book takes on a bit of a negative tone. Also I found reading about Mark's courtship and marriage to a teenager very uncomfortable. But, history is history. The Book talks about Mark's involvement in "Holiness Christianity" and how Mark has swung to a position of "Christian" universal salvation. He sates that all devout believers are saved by Christ weather there Muslim, Jewish, Buddhists, etc., On another negative note The book basically ends with an attack on Don Brewer (After Mark talks about Grace and Forgiveness), in fact the book has a somewhat consistent attack on don interspersed though its pages from beginning to end. the paradox is Mark talks about Love, Forgiveness, Universal Salvation, grace but seems to have none of those things as for as Don Brewer is concerned and Mark comes off looking a bit hypercritical because of this. Another negative thing is the very biased toward Mark, it makes it unprofessional and a fluff piece basically; praising Mark from cover to cover, that's cool if that's what some people want, but anyone looking for total truth or balance will not find it hear, its a shame, there is a lot of good research and info in the book but the Bias and the Writing style leave me wanting a rewrite. But having said that I still think its a must have for GFR fans. At least it will give you Mark's thinking about issues. And it is a very good history of Mark's life.
Could be better.......2002-07-19
I ordered and received Mark's book for a few reasons. One is he said some theological things (such as there was a discussion about when Judgment Day is) that confused some on the roadkill list (An Internet fan list for Grand Funk). I wanted to look into that. Two the book is supposed to explain the Terry Knight fiasco better. Also (three) Mark fan's were telling me how balanced it was and how it did not always portray Mark in a positive light. I read the book and bias the book is. Even when it shows Mark had done something wrong, it has an excuse for him. There is also a small bit of anti Don Brewer Bias in parts of the book that is not necessary. The author goes so far with his bias against Don Brewer, Mark's stepfather takes shots at Don, Ricky Farner does, and Mark does as well, and its simple not necessary there is no evidence express in the book to paint Mr. Brewer in a bad light except foe the aforementioned persons hateful words. It's simply not necessary. The Book is unprofessional because of the author's bias, which he readily admits in a disclaimer at the book of the book. It is also poorly written in places, at times I felt like I was reading someone's notes for an upcoming book arranged in outline order. The Author also has an annoying habit of starting writing abut a subject, interjecting an unrelated event, and then finishing the subject. An example is when Mark was young he and a friend went hunting and Mark shot a squirrel and then he felt bad about it. Then he jumps to writing about Mark pissing on an electric fence, then back to Mark not hunting for a while. I'm I the only one getting lost hear, what the hell does pissing on an electric fence have to do with hunting? The Book Is choppy because of that. My other compliant is the type size its extremely small. On the plus side the book is filled with information about Marks life, Marks opinions, Marks friend's glowing admiration for him, Marks family, and hey some history of GFR is included. It also has some good information in the back of the book about concert dates and recordings. So if your a HUGE Mark or GFR fan you can wade though the spots of choppy writing it is a must read.
One very good section of this book is about The GFR days from 69-76. They are written very well and flow very well and there are some funny little stories about life on the road. Then it turns to 77 to the present and shows Mark's was in involved in "Holiness Christianity" and how he has changed his view to a position of universal salvation, he sates that all devout believers are saved by Christ weather there Muslim, Jewish, Buddhists, etc., Its a nice view but it is not biblical, and he claims to be a Bible believer (oh well this is not a theological discussion forum and I know this is not really the place for a theological discussion. But I was surprised by Marks new view. The book basically ends with an attack on Don Brewer (After Mark talks about Grace and Forgiveness), in fact the book has a somewhat consistent attack on don interspersed though its pages from beginning to end (ignore those). Mark talks about Love, Forgiveness, Universal Salvation, and grace (there is a wonderful section on grace).
I don't want to leave the impression that the whole Book is bashing Don Brewer; it's not; but it takes its shots throughout, and seemingly for no reason. The book takes a captious tone as far as Don goes. There are no attacks on Mel in the book. Be that as it may, the attacks on Don are not the biggest problem with "from Grand Funk To Grace," The biggest problem is how unprofessionally it is written. Especially the first 1/3 of the book, its so choppy its heard to read, Its just bad in places and because of the bias. What I like is clarity and flow and there's some hear, but really the book should not have gone to press unless it was rewritten. Also the author is just too complimentary of Mark, it makes the book a fluff piece. If it mentions something Mark has done wrong there is always an excuse, after all "Mark is a handsome man." The author repeats that line like 10 times, and has a habit of repeating the same things over and over. Also it seems to me Mark wrote a couple of the sections in the book, so he should get writing credit. In fact the book is so pro Mark and his opinions that it reads more like an autobiography instead of a biography, or even a political treatise. In a Biography you don't list a man's beliefs and say how great he is, or how you agree with him; you say what he believes and you try to find out why he believes it. You dig down deep and see what makes someone tick. You find out things about the subject, that even the subject dose not knows about him or herself. You don't only quote people who find your subject handsome, great, wonderful, and on and on. Where is the balance? There is no investigation in that way in this book, this is what Mark wants to say, that's fine but don't call it a biography. It's more like a political treatise; maybe it should be called Mark Farner, My Struggle. Or I would have called it From Grand funk To Grace To Universalism. But having said all that it is still a must have for GFR and Mark Farner fans. Just know the author's bias.

I'm not a vegetarian, but this is a good one........2002-08-09
I'm not a vegetarian, but this is a good one for anyone into Chinese cooking. I especially enjoy the pickling section. There are plenty of recipes using tofu as well. And fruits. Enough recipes to keep anyone busy for a while. The instructions are clear and each recipe is personalized by the author's descriptions. The shopping list is extra handy for anyone who can't read Chinese can take the book to the shop keeper and point to the Chinese characters adjacent to the English name for the ingredients.
For anyone looking for delicious ways to use Chinese veggies.......2002-08-07
What seems like an unassuming book is stuffed with recipes for Asian ingredients. It describes varieties of the same ingredients and their differences, where to get them, and what to look for.
It is filled with easy to make delicacies from pickled vegetables to soup to dishes with a kick. If you like the ingredients used, you'll love the combinations of the ingredients and how they're used.
