Book Description
Concentrating on quick studies allows painters to get to the essence of painting. This proven method focuses on the gist of the subject and the ability to make fast decisions, rather than the minute details that seem to mire some artists and prevent them from improving.
Based on more than 10 years of quick studies classes the author has taught to students of all mediums and abilities, this guide features lots of examples, step-by-step demonstrations and engaging exercises that will have readers diving right in.
After a brief explanation of how and why this painting approach works, readers will explore nine distinctive areas where quick studies will improve their painting, including:
-Editing and Brush Confidence -Color and Composition Exploration -Lighting effects -Capturing new subjects -Basic practice and recreation
Customer Reviews:
Great Method to Paint.......2007-01-08
This is great book to sharpen your skills as a painter. I feel it's better suited for intermediate to profesional artists. The theory behind quickstudies is to make you decide what is or not important in a painting in a limited time span. To be honest, it took a lot of timed paintings to get used to the speed of a quickstudy. It definitely has helped loosen me up and not paint too tight from the getgo.
Very Inspiring.......2005-06-09
Craig Nelson is right: "studies" are essential to learn painting and evolve into a good painter. It helps to get to the essence of your subject. I do not know any good painter who did not spend years painting before becoming really good.
This book does not have the perfect title but is excellent in content. The 60 minutes are what it takes to be in tune with what you are painting and finding ways to improve your artwork.
Each lesson presents a different challenge, and also leads you to explore a full spectrum of techniques. Perfect book to get you started on the "right brush"...and get you really in awe of the whole process.
60 Years to better paining........2005-02-12
Yeah, right... I read this book and was completely overwhelmed. The author thinks I can do a painting like this in 60 seconds?
I don't think so. Thanks for trying. I would sell this book in a heartbeat...but my husband likes it... so on the shelf with other " How to books" ... It remains.
Gets you started.......2003-11-03
This book is essential for those who need help in getting started painting. Craig recommends items one needs to begin such as paint, palette, mediums, paint colors etc.
He recommends 'quick studies' which help to avoid the fear of failure and help you to begin a painting. Also, the quick studies help you to improve on your style and editing. I think as a beginner this has been an extremely useful book.
For Beginners.......2003-09-28
paintings are mostly done from pictures, paintings look stiff and edge control is not that great in all the paintings. The way the book is written is not all that great.

A Historical Introduction to Early American Kenpo.......2006-07-08
A superb introduction to Ed Parker's American Kenpo Karate, this manual covers basic techniques in Part I, and in Part II the first (original) 62 maneuvers required for promotion to 2nd brown tip white belt--that is, before the introduction of belts other than white, brown and black. Remember this volume was written in 1960.
This was Parker's first book, and it stands out from what little was available at the time for its straightforward explanations and crisp, clear drawings and photographs. Each sequence is completely explained and illustrated with written instruction and photos--on average each technique (series) is shown in 3-5 photos which include precise arrows illustrating the path of movement.
Even in 1960, you can see the intellectual side of Parker's American Kenpo, as he covers topics such as the "Importance of Speed", the "Importance of Maneuvering", and the "Importance of Integrating Speed, Power, Accuracy and Gauging of Distance" (page73-74). Already Parker was making use of organizational charts for anatomical points, method and effect of attack. (pages 58-65).
For the history buffs among us, Acknowledgements are given by Parker on the copyright page to several of the early men of Kanpo Karate, including Ben Otake, William Ingram, Robert Liddle, Tim Trahan, Charles Pranke, and Rich Montgomery. Parker and several early students (Including two of the Tracy brothers of Tracy's Kenpo fame among them) take turns demonstrating techniques, with Parker alternating between Tori (demonstrator) and Uke (assistant). Of special value to those with an interest in Karate and Kenpo history in the United States.
great read.......2000-06-22
this book keyed on most of the points in kenpo karate...if you have the time to wait for the book it is a perfect buy for any martial arts fanatic

From the supplier: The Clinton administration advocates essentially the same laws and policies as those of its more conservative predecessors. Only Pres. Clinton's political rhetoric represented the difference between his administration's crime policy and that of others before him. A chronology of Pres. Clinton's actions pertaining to crime control, from the campaign period in 1992 to the enactment of the crime bill in 1994, is presented to illustrate this change in rhetoric. Progressives are urged to use this shift in discourse to their advantage by disputing the prevailing rhetoric in crime prevention.

Book Description
Culled from Tony Barr's 40 years' experience as a performer, director and acting teacher in Hollywood, this highly praised handbook provides readers with the practical knowledge they need when performing in front of the camera. This updated edition includes plenty of new exercises for honing on-camera skills; additional chapters on imagination and movement; and fresh material on character development, monologues, visual focus, playing comedy and working with directors. Inside tips on the studio system and acting guilds make it particularly helpful for people new to the business, and numerous anecdotes from actors such as Morgan Freeman and Anthony Hopkins and examples from current movies illustrate its many lessons. It is perfect for acting classes, workshops, all actors who work in front of the camera -- and all those who want to.
Customer Reviews:
No. 1 hand book for Actors.......2007-09-25
I recom'nd this book for all young actors & actresses to read. This is really good hand book for these people
Great general book on acting, with emphasis on TV/Film.......2006-07-12
I obtained this book to read while taking an "Audition For Camera" class at my acting school. I'm a relative novice, but had read some books on general acting before, such as Uta Hagen's "A Challenge For The Actor," and really wanted a book that talked about specific aspects of acting in front of a camera.
This book, Tony Barr's "Acting For The Camera," is a little different from what I was initially hoping it would be, in that it basically is a book about general acting, with more than the entire first half of the book devoted to that. I remember often thinking "when are we going to get to the part about camera work?"
Mr. Barr's general thoughts on acting are actually quite good, though, which encouraged me to read through the whole of the first section, and I would say that there are many excellent insights there. It's also a relatively quick read, as opposed to Uta Hagen's book, for example, and many things are presented in ways I hadn't read in other books before.
When I finally got to the "camera" section of the book, I sort of realized that the reason he probably spent so much time with the "general acting" stuff is because ... well, the most important part of "acting for the camera" is the ACTING, not the CAMERA! Of course there are many specifics that he addresses, but all the specifics and terminology etc. aren't going to help you if you can't act.
Plus, the section on "exercises" at the end of the book was helpful to read, even though I haven't tried any of them myself yet ... they seem like well-thought out exercises to improve ones' camera work.
The groundwork and advice on acting that he gives, though, is excellent all-around and seems appropriate to apply to ANY type of acting, not just camera acting.
So, all in all, I'd say that the book would more accurately be titled "ACTING, with a special section on Acting For The Camera!" That isn't quite as marketable though, I suppose!!
Very good introductory text.......2005-08-27
I very much agree with philosophy of this text. I think it did a good job of gathering the most important points of acting for film.
It's a short, easy, read, but I think it teaches all the right things.
A good reference.......2004-07-05
Overall, this is a good purchase. I got this a while ago because of my interest in branching out in my acting. I will admit that the first few chapters were slow, and I stopped reading for a while. However, after the first 1/4 I really got into it. There are excellent tips in there on how to go from theatre acting to film acting. There were also some good ideas on acting in general--from reacting to stimuli during a scene or dealing with unruly directors. It also had a few addresses for unions, which is always nice to have. There were also definitions of jobs related to film and the equipment used in film. The last chapter of the book is a compilation of exercises to practice in front of a camera. These are exercises that you will need about 2 or 3 other people for, and you will either have to improvise a scene, write a scene, or find a scene to perform while doing the exercises.
This is a very good book that gives you the basics. It can be used as an introduction or as a refresher, and it is generally an enjoyable read--Tony Barr writes with humor but also gets the point across. After the first few chapters, I devoured this book. This is definitely a good book to have for reference, one that I will have around for a while...
Another Must ahve for Serious actors!.......2004-02-12
My acting teacher says that, basically, their are two types of acting. Acting for the stage (theatre, plays)and acting for the camera (movies, tv). I want to do the later one, acting in movies. We do some stage excersises in class, but they dont interest me. I want to be in front of the camera so I can use some method and other technics, that my teacher says dont work in stage acting. I know i will reach my goal and get more and more film work. If you think the stage isn't for you, either, than read this book. You learn alot.

Book Description
For this second edition of his guide to the more adventurous evolutions of music since 1945, Reginald Smith Brindle has added a new chapter reviewing developments in the decade since the book first appeared. He discusses the decline of experimentalism and the reaction against increasing cerebralism and complexity as variously illustrated by the more recent works of Stockhausen, the 'minimalist' works of Reich and Glass, and the partial return to romanticism. He also reviews the technological revolution which has taken place in computer music, and concludes that the future of music will for the time being be most closely associated with technological change and development, rather than with radical change in compositional techniques.
Customer Reviews:
A great source for the new music.......2004-07-17
As to talk about the new music and go further deeply into it, one has to clearly define the roots, social situation, paradigms, early tendencies of pioneers, theoretical backround of art in general with its relation to the overall world view and so on... Brindle's success on figuring out these concepts deserves an appreciation. The book achieves to provide a wide understanding of twentieth century music with almost all aspects of the reasoning of artistic creativity of our age. One of the most important qualities of this book also underlies in it's perfectly selected musical examples provided quite often within the text that are also including new technics used in the "new" music. From this point of view alone, it would be evaluated as the second book after Erhard Karkoschka's "Notation in New Music". Though it is mostly in charge of musicologists who are in search of a comprehensive twentieth century music source rather than composers especially focusing on compositional tools but anyway it is a must have book for both.
Fine synopsis of post-war trends in the avant garde.......2001-05-26
Worthwhile addition to the library of books devoted to contemporary music. The presentation is quite lucid and the topics covered are quite relevant for today's composer, or those interested in modern techniques. There is very little coverage of the most recent composers, namely those working in neo-tonal contexts, but there is a mention of this trend in an epilogue. I find the graphical information in the book some of the best content in the book. Some chapters try to cover somewhat technical topics too quickly, but if you read it carefully enough, it's comprehensible.

Book Description
Examining Franco-American cinema relations, this book details France's periodic attempts to curb Hollywood's access to the European market. It focuses on the French influence on-and the American reaction to-the European Union's Television Without Frontiers directive and the dramatic crisis-ridden talks during the Uruguay round of the final 1993 GATT negotiation. These climactic events, which nearly led to a breakdown in world trade in intellectual property, are set in the context of commercial and legal history and the two countries' competing concepts of art and commerce.
Customer Reviews:
Great Franco-American cinema overview.......2006-02-23
"Some Big Bourgois" comprehensively recounts the events and provides analysis/context for battles over audio/visual trade culminating with the 1990s battle over European TV quotas capping sales of Hollywood product. The book recounts how, amazingly for five years, the U.S. gov't didn't seem to realize that constant French lobbying for quotas was going to overcome internal European opposition. As the book notes, the protectionist quota had some unanticipated drawbacks for its main supporter by, for example, making it hard for French TV producers to latch on to international co-productions mostly made in English. I have 25 years experience covering TV/Film with articles in Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Los Angeles Times, so I my eyes usually glaze over when books get historical. However, I was fascinated by context of the US-French film history in the early 20th century including learning that MGM and Gaumont actually merged for a time in the 1920s. This is an academic paper expanded to a book and where the footnotes provide an interesting backgrounder clustered at end of chapters.

Customer Reviews:
The Definitive STAR TREK Trivia Book Part I.......2002-11-22
The Definitive STAR TREK Trivia Book Part I written by Jill Sherwin is a very good trivia book except for the registry numbers on the appropriate ships, but that's a proof reader's error not the author's. Anyway, this is a volume you will want in your TREK library as it has many interesting questions and answers.
That being said, all you need to do is place an addendum in the book and you'll have a very worthy addition to your TREK Library. Oh, the erratum is the Excelsior registry number... a minor error.
The book is divided into ten sections and each section covers a genre of the Star Trek Universe.
Section One Star Trek: The Original Series
Section Two Star Trek: The Next Generation
Section Three Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Section Four Star Trek: Voyager
Section Five Star Trek: The Films
Section Six New Life and New Civilizations
Section Seven Starfleet
Section Eight Personnel Files
Section Nine Abstract Knowledge
Section Ten Answers
I found that I liked this volume for its originality and the questions that are asked are of import. Especially, if you want to check up on a character of film or book. Maybe it's just me, but I like to dig a little farther into the trek genre and get a full range into the story. Sometimes author's assume you know everything about Star Trek, but if your like me you know enough just to be dangerous. This book will help fill in the gaps of your knowledge.
The book is fun and very enjoyable. You'll get a good dose of TREK trivia reading this volume. I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I did. Reading this book will accelerate your knowleadge of TREK to warp speed... the number of warp speed depends on your previous knowledge, but my estimation would be around 9.0 and if you get volume II you should be cruising at 9.9 and the tachyons are flowing for the trans-warp breakthrough.
Only one quiz has a mistake in it!.......2002-09-08
I don't know why the reviewer below gave the whole book a bad review because one quiz had the answer key messed up! The rest of the book is right on!
STARSHIP SECTION MESSED UP.......2002-08-09
Being that I am currently in the process of writing a book detailing the history of Federation starships, I was apalled when I noticed that most of the registry numbers and classes for the ships were WRONG. My friend and I picked up a copy of this book in our local bookstore and were flipping through it, and we were laughing out loud when we noticed the mistakes.
If you're a ship enthusiast like myself, DO NOT buy this book because it will make you sick to your stomach. Off the top of my head I cannot remember what some of the exact mistakes are, but they claim that the U.S.S. Excelsior's registry number is NCC-53847. Right. And that the U.S.S. Enterprise is NCC-1631 or something like that. Hey, they got the 1's right in the begging and end! Please contact me if you have an opinion about this.
The Definitive Star Trek Trivia Book Volume II.......2002-06-07
The Definitive Star Trek Trivia Book Volume II by Jill Sherwin is a real jewel. The book is divided into 10 chapters and has information on TOS, ST:TNG, DS-9, Voyager, The Films, New Life and New Civilizations, Starfleet, Personnel Files, Abstract Knowledge and of course Number Ten is the Answer section.
So, if you are into TREK, this is the book that will answer some or most of your questions about these areas within the TREK Universe. I found that reading and answering the questions further increased my knowledge about these TREK areas. And if you need to settle a dispute... you've got the answer book to help you.
As the Trek Universe expands, I look forward to more of these compendia to be published. The book is set up well and is extremely well thought out.
This is an excellent addition to your Trek library.
