5 out of 5 stars Africa Emerges.......2005-05-09

With the signing of the comprehensive peace treaty between the Khartoum government and the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in January of 2005 - the oldest running civil war on the African continent came to an end.

It is no coincidence that Andre Magnin published this book of the Pigozzi Collection at that time. Africa Emerges from a lost decade (perhaps century) to become a far more important part of the global landscape in this millenium.

The study and understanding of African culture will be an important part of the welcoming of these nations into the world economy. The time is now.

This book is a must read for those seeking a glimpse of the future of Africa. Jean Pigozzi's vision and Andre Magnin's tireless efforts have assembled, with absolutely no doubt, the preeminent collection of African Art on the planet today. They are early - agreed, but they are on to something very important.

But don't buy the book because the work is important; buy it because it presents some of the most visually beautiful, funny and compelling artwork you have seen in a long time. I promise you this will be the most looked-at art book on your coffee table.

    Product Description

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. The Contemporary African Art Collection-which is essentially run by only two guys, Italian collector Jean Pigozzi and French curator André Magnin-has managed to make some people very angry. Is it not the worst sort of cultural colonialism, detractors ask, for two white Westerners to define what contemporary African art is, especially when their collection consists almost exclusively of self-taught artists? But, as they make clear in the interviews included here, Pigozzi and Magnin make no claim to do anything other than present artists they love, and it is their idiosyncratic tastes that make this catalog (which is being published in conjunction with an exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston) such a surprise and a pleasure. The surprise comes from the sheer scope of inventiveness and variety on display: from the spare, ominous watercolors of Barthélémy Toguo (from Cameroon) to the surrealistic allegories Cheri Samba (of Congo) paints in a slick, commercial art style. Some of the artists produce work at a polar extreme from the scruffy, homemade look one might expect from "outsider" artists: Rigobert Nimi of Congo uses scavenged materials to build gleaming, precisely rendered models of spaceships and robot factories, and Abu Bockari Mansaray of Sierra Leone draws maniacally detailed diagrams of such devices as a "Nuclear Telephone Discovered in Hell." If there is any flaw in this presentation of an explosively imaginative group of artists (33 of them in all, from 14 countries), it is that, with only two or three images for each artist, it feels far too short. Still, for open-minded readers more interested in art itself than what Pigozzi calls "intellectual art gossip," this is a book to linger over and absorb slowly, one intoxicating vision at a time.

5 out of 5 stars Mosaic has never looked so fabulously trendy !.......1999-01-20

Any one with an eye for detail & a creative bone in their body will love this. Much more contempory & fun than the more 'crafty' selection of mosaic making books on the market. Whilst retaining the traditonal format of 'introduction - gallery - techniques - projects - useful addresses, etc' the projects are far from traditional in style if not in technique. This will probably appeal to the more style conscious person because the ideas in the book are more fitting in a modern setting but the principles in making decorative mosaic objects for the home are obviously traditional & well presented. The book has a 'clean' feel to it but I hope that anyone buying it will not stay clean for long as they cover themselves in glue, grout & bits of glass & ceramic (not literally, of course!) This will appeal to anyone who wants to try out a new & rewarding craft but is afraid of that word -"CRAFT" aghhh! This is so stylish you'll be staying in on Saturday night to make a mirror ! I might buy another copy to keep one clean ! Mosaic doesn't have to be folky, religious or in the swimming pool... It is THE up & coming decorative art & these boys have made it their own. Why not have a go ?

4 out of 5 stars A good design and how-to book, but not a "sourcebook"........1998-07-25

This is a good book of inspirations and instructions for mosaic vases, tables, mirrors, and pots. There are lots of illustrations and patterns. However, the title is misleading; there are only a few sources listed, none of which have web site info, toll-free numbers, or a description of what they supply.

          4 out of 5 stars very inspirational.......1999-12-15

This book (along with Locktov/Clagett's "The Art of Mosaic Design") is a very fine book to inspire those who make mosaics and those who appreciate them (the mosaics, that is... not the mosaicists -- particularly). Neither are books for the beginner as far as making the projects, but the mosaics can allow you to see what is possible. There is an emphasis on Martin Cheek's own work, that's true, but hey... he's pretty darn good.

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......1999-10-27

          Great photos of great mosaics.

          4 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......1998-11-02

This is a great book if you're looking for ideas or wondering how to handle a particular subject. It's divided into sections by subject matter, such as Still Life, Birds, Animals and The Human World. One page (for example) shows 3 elephant mosaics done by different artists, and explains how different techniques and styles produce a completely different end result.

The author's work predominates but there are a substantial number of other artists too. At the end of the book is a directory of the artists and their contact details. They're predominantly British, although there are a few Americans too.

What this book *doesn't* have is DIY projects and in-depth explanations of techniques/tools/materials.

If you buy it for the right reason - inspiration rather than instruction - you should be very happy with it!

I'm the artist who drew the cartoons. 2005 was a great year for the special kind of ridicule and abuse that cartoons can provide, from skewering the inestimable Cindy Sheehan (a walking cartoon in her own right) to the war on terror, to GM's amazing breakdown as an American icon.
The vast majority of cartoonists I know are inarguably more talented, more famous, better paid than I am, and almost invariably liberal. My view has always been that ideas should challenge the individual, not merely prop up preconceived notions. Since the editorial cartoons (and some of the more egregious strips, with the exception of "Prickly City") in most newspapers are overwhelmingly liberal, they do little more than present the Left side of the argument. This is fine, but it's not a good way to challenge people to think in other ways. So I brought out the book, with the hope that someone with a good heart might send this to a liberally-inclined friend and give them a new set of ideas to consider. The marketplace of ideas should be big enough for more than just the New York-Washington DC-Los Angeles triad of conventional, liberal thinking. Disagree with me on the cartoons? Terrific--the open-minded should always be willing to consider all of the alternatives. Now buy the stupid book.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Look at a Momentous Year!.......2006-02-08

Paul has the talent to present convincing arguments or biting criticism in a single panel cartoon, and thus his record of 2005 is an important memorial that no conservative should be without.

It is also worth mentioning that despite the fact that this book contains the best of Paul's cartoons for 2005, there are those that have a broader timeframe.

(And if you happen to notice my name is the same as the illustrator of this book, we are not the smae person nor are we relatives. It is an uncanny coincidence - nothing more.)

Established less than 200 years ago, Chicago has seen a lot of living in that short span of time. Burned to the ground early on, it’s been frozen and just recently flooded. Tucked away in the Midwest, it still rivals both coasts with its food, entertainment, and cultural venues. Chicago’s Most Wanted™: The Top 10 Book of Murderous Mobsters, Midway Monsters, and Windy City Oddities takes you on a tour of that toddlin’ town with dozens of top-ten lists containing memorable minutiae and delightful details. Laura L. Enright will blow you away with this collection of amusing and amazing facts about the Windy City.

One would be hard-pressed to decide what Chicago is most famous for. Is it disasters, such as the Great Chicago Fire? Or perhaps gangsters are its calling card, with Al Capone at the head? Maybe it’s the politics, with “Hizzoner, da Mayor” and stories of votes coming from the dead. Or do sports come to mind first, like the Cubs’ dismal failures—some say due to a decades-old curse—and the glory days of da Bulls and da Bears? Whatever it is that makes Chicago, it’s in Chicago’s Most Wanted™. The famous and the infamous, festivals and food, blues and jazz, and so much more are all included in this collection of fascinating and often humorous trivia tidbits. Frank Sinatra rhapsodized that Chicago “won’t let you down,” and neither will Laura L. Enright’s Chicago’s Most Wanted™!

Should you buy this book? If you have more than a passing interest in The Beatles, musicology, psychedelics or/and music theory, the answer is an unequivocal "Yes!"

"Every Sound There Is," a compilation of 14 chapters, illustrates a variety of standpoints on The Beatles' "Revolver."

I am particularly fascinated with the analytical approach to popular music and text traditionally implemented by classically trained musicologists, a project my college instructors would never have undertaken or assigned during the 1970s. Analysis was then based on the three "B's": Bach, Beethoven and Brahms; now we have a fourth "B."

Being a classically trained musician, I find it difficult to evaluate how a layman would appreciate some of the more musically technical passages in "Every Sound There Is." However, I think most readers will get the gist of the articles, even if they are not familiar with technical terms like a "I IV V progression" or "plagal cadence."

Ron Schleifer's "The Beatles, Postmodernism, an ill-tempered musical form," which compares "Revolver" to postmodernism, was harder to understand, but his thesis remains intriguing nonetheless.

Interestingly, the commentaries remain consistent in evaluating the meaning of the music and lyrics, in determining how each cut works with the others, and in the historical significance of the recording itself.

I gained a number of important insights from reading this book, including a new appreciation of "Revolver" as a work of art. I had heard the album hundreds of times, but I never actually "listened" to it.

After reading a couple of chapters of "Every Sound There Is," I sat down with headphones and gave the CD my undivided attention. The result was nothing less than astonishing. I am now at an existential crossroads: which monumental album is better, "Sgt. Pepper" or "Revolver"?

Read "Every Sound There Is" and decide for yourself.

This is a book that I have read atleast 20 times since I bought it back in 1995 - I would suggest looking for a hardcover version since the wear and tear has taken its toll on my precious copy - its now held together with gaffers tape ...

anyhoo - this is probably the best political satire ever - and even though it was written back in the 80's it is more than relevant today in the day of the infamous spin cycle and the sparing between the Bush Admin and the press (not taking sides here)

Hey even Margaret Thatcher was a big fan as it truely represented how things worked, albeit in a very smartly funny and incisive way .... she even WROTE a skit along with her press sec that was PERFORMED by MT, Sir Humpy and Jim .... here is a link for more details

                    http://www.yes-minister.com/thatcherscript.htm

BUY this book and preserve it - I fear the day when copies of this book are no longer available in print form

                    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Priceless!.......2003-12-18

It is not uncommon for writers of britcoms to supplement a successful television series with a text-based adaptation, and such is indeed what writers Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay have done with Yes Minister (and its sequel, Yes Prime Minister). It is uncommon, however, to find such a good one.

Every bit as erudite and witty as the series upon which it is based, The Complete Yes Minister (originally published in 1984 and subtitled The Diaries of a Cabinet Minister), is ostensibly by the Right Hon. James Hacker MP (with Lynn and Jay serving merely as humble editors!). The year is 2019--and no this is NOT science fiction! Although Hacker kept a daily diary of his experiences and opinions whilst in office in the 1980s, the subsequent passage of time has resulted in the expiration of the Thirty-Year Rule. What this means is that the editors (who are writing from Hacker College, Oxford, by the way!) now conveniently have access to (and are able to publish) copies of all the memos and minutes written by Sir Humphrey Appleby (amongst others)--copies of which are included in the book, thereby providing us with a perspective other than Hacker's rather narrow (and, at least initially, innocent) one.

The book commences (as one would expect!) with the "Editors' Note." Lynn and Jay elaborate on the problems they encountered in editing the Diaries and how these were dealt with. Nevertheless, they admit it falls to us ultimately to decide for ourselves whether Hacker's account represents: "(a) what happened, (b) what he believed happened, (c) what he would like to have happened, (d) what he wanted others to believe happened, or (e) what he wanted others to believe that he believed happened"! The editors also include a note of thanks to Sir Humphrey (whose last days were spent in St. Dympna's Hospital for the Elderly Deranged!) for information gleaned from conversations which were held with him "before the advancing years, without in any way impairing his verbal fluency, disengaged the operation of his mind from the content of his speech."

The Diaries themselves are divided into twenty-one chapters (one chapter per episode) with 20 to 30 pages each (there are 514 pages in all). Of course there is dialogue (from Hacker's recollection), but the Diaries comprise so much more. The inclusion of copies of memos, letters, interviews, newspaper clippings, entries from Sir Humphrey's own diary, not to mention the recollections of Sir Bernard Woolley (from conversations with the editors) make for a far more dynamic, fun book than if the writers had merely presented us with the series' scripts. The format also allows for so much of Hacker's thoughts to be included--much of which we as viewers were never privy to. Finally, the Diaries are liberally annotated by the editors with helpful, humorously phrased bits of background information often pertaining to government workings or terminology--bits that are additional to the television series.

Of course, it is being a fan of the television series and having watched it with such enjoyment that makes this book (a UK publication) such a gem as we picture Hacker, Sir Humphrey, etc., in our mind's eye. But it is so creatively written, with all the original wit (and more), that it's a superb book in its own right--one which I'd recommend to anyone looking for an intelligent, hilariously witty, pun-filled book--one that also happens to offer a wealth of insight into the inner workings of the parliamentary system of government. For those, however, for whom this richly witty, intelligent series is a favourite, this book (together with it's sequel) really is a must-have, and I recommend it every bit as highly as the superb series upon which it is based!

5 out of 5 stars British humor at its best.......2002-03-31

if you like your humor understated and your wit dry (droll as humphrey would no doubt say), this book will be the best you have ever read. and it will stay that way.

the british civil service had a unique characteristic - it was not directly under the control of the political masters. this gave rise to a very interesting situation where the civil service and her majesty's servants were working towards entirely opposite ends. to the civil servant, imaginative and bold were the worst criticisms. change in any form was looked down upon - as we say here - "if it aint broke, dont fix it". the politicians (especially those new in office like hacker who weren't cynical enough not to care one way or the other) often came to office with lofty ideals of revolutionizing society and being the forefathers of a better tomorrow.

behind the curtain of civility, they (the civil servants and politicians) fought battle after battle. the art of realpolitik meant entirely diffent things to both sides. many of the battles went to the civil servants (Lord Humphrey being among the shrewdest) but at times Hacker (James Hacker - first minister and later Prime Minister) prevailed with his low cunning and fast realization that not everything was what it looked like.

each chapter is a revelation - the next time you read the news, you will see it in an entire different perspective after reading this book. action and motive are so far removed as to make the connection entirely unimaginable and the amount of time spent trying to do nothing seems at times appalling.

if slapstick is your cup of tea, stay away from this book. the humor is often less in what is said than in how it is said. the laughs never end. i have read this book 5 times now. the first time, you enjoy the humor for what it is. the second time, you start enjoying the situations, the broader picture, the political moves, and the sheer genius of humphrey. the third time you see how the characters develop. by the fourth time, it's like you're on crack. you cant explain it - you know what is going to happen next, you know the exact words. you still have to read it again. and again. and again.

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply the Best book in Satirical humor.......2002-03-22

Sir Humphrey Appleby, Sir Bernard Wooley, and Rt Honorable James Hacker... this is simply the most outstanding work of humorous fiction that lampoons the British civil service and politicians alike.

Based on the diaries of the minister, the series has been converted to a wonderful teleseries, where the casting has been done by someone who truly loves the book and has imbibed the characters so completely, that on later readings of the book, the television characters appear to the mind.

The book is a series of short stories, which expose the careful interplay between the British civil service and the British politicians, the role played by media, the foriegn office, the various departments etc. It is a wonderful set of stories, where the English is truly masterful!! I remember reading each story with a pencil and dictionary while writing the GRE many years ago,... this and its sequel, yes prime minister, are books which should receive their space in your cabinet.

I dont know why this says - Limited availability, these books are easily procured in India where they are being printed.

5 out of 5 stars That rarest humour - which is found in truth........1999-05-25

Yes Prime Minister is that rarest of books. It is based on a TV show, itself hilarious, and yet manages to be even better than the show. Whereas the show descends into slapstick and exaggerated humour at times, the book does not miss a step. The plots are wonderfully woven, the characters all superbly crafted and uniformly shallow and the writing is impeccable - there are never two words when one will do, and the characters will stay with you long after the first (of many) reading(s). I suspect in years to come, when some distance can be put between the book and it's times, it will be recognised as one of the all time comedy classics. Buy it now!

                          Book Description

This is the story of Suryaprakash Singh, newly-elected Minister of Administrative Affairs, and his comically heroic efforts to come to terms with the vagaries of his office, in which he is aided as well as impeded by Shri Rajnath Mathur, Secretary of the Department, and S.K. Kaul, Suryaprakash's Private Secretary. Based on the television series Ji Mantriji, an adaptation of the immensely popular 'Yes Minister' books, this is a sharply perceptive glimpse into the farcical world of Indian politics, and the bureaucratic red tape that appears to hold it together.

There are very few books that not only make you laugh, but also instruct you. I always wondered why political schemes never seem to work for the common person. Now I know, and I thoroughly enjoyed the learning experience. I understand that ex-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher loved the television programs. Every politician must face all that Jim Hacker had to deal with in these stories. Also, pay attention to the character, Arnold. He is a realist with absolutely no conscience whatsoever. However, he does understand how the system actually works. If you like satire, you've picked up the right book. Cheers to the authors! It doesn't get any better than this!

This book portrays the political drama with an excellent sense of humour.

5 out of 5 stars You *can* teach an old Minister new tricks.......2000-04-10

Like the companion book for the later series, _Yes, Prime Minister_, _The Diaries of a Cabinet Minister_ follows in the British tradition of committing filmed episodes to paper. New fans to the series who know it only from the North American video release will actually find wholly `new' material here; more episodes find their way into this volume than are currently available on VHS. But clearly, if you're looking for behind-the-scenes information or a discussion of _YM_ in the context of 1980's Britain, you've come to the wrong book.

No, this is a book for people who are so enamored of the dialogue, style, and even the issues of the television series that they want the same stories retold with a new twist. After reading this book, it's easy to see why there were enough such people that this book made the bestseller lists in England.

Even if you've seen every episode five times, this is fabulous stuff to add to your print library. Jonathan Lynn and Anthony Jay clearly have an ear for dialogue and a head for politics. They also are smart enough to put just enough new material in the book to reward diehard fans. By retelling each episode from the perspective of the Minister, they add a level of humor usually not present in the series: that of insight into Hacker's genuine opinions. To be sure, the book's basic paradigm is to keep all the dialogue from the filmed episode, with Hacker quoting exactly what the other characters say, but there's enough new expository material to set up those quotes that fans of the show will feel they're getting more than just a print regurgitation of the series.

Indeed, this twist proved so successful with the British readership that the authors decided to push forward and make a second edition, _The Complete Diaries of a Cabinet Minister_, which includes more pictures, more graphical elements (such as handwritten notes between Humphrey and the Minister), and I think even one more episode, that add value to the solid core found in this edition.

Which edition should you get? Given the out-of-print status of the volume, I'd say you should get what Amazon can find for you. If you liked the series, you won't be disappointed with either.
