What if work by 21 prominent contemporary artists could be described in terms of familiar topics rather than specialized mumbo-jumbo? That was the idea behind Art: 21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. Each of the four essayists takes one topic--place, spirituality, identity, or consumption--as the launching point for discussions of a varied group of American artists. Produced to accompany a PBS television series, this amply illustrated book embraces art ranging from the sexually charged sculptures of Louise Bourgeois (born in 1911) to paintings by Michael Ray Charles (born in 1967) that rework black stereotypes into ironic commentaries. The artists are certainly worthy, and it's no big deal that the art is nearly all from the 20th century (not, as the title suggests, the 21st). But the thematic approach works better for some artists than for others, and the effort to be inclusive makes for vague and awkward writing. --Cathy Curtis
Book Description
Published to accompany the third season of the award-winning PBS television series, this lavishly illustrated volume offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at some of the most interesting artists working today. Interviewing the artists on the themes of Memory, Power, Play, and Structure, Susan Sollins, executive producer of the series, takes us into their studios and homes where they talk about their life and art in their own words. The 18 artists include established figures such as Ida Applebroog, Mike Kelley, Susan Rothenberg, and Fred Wilson, and emerging artists such as Laylah Ali, Arturo Herrera, and Josiah McElheny.
The innovative approach-bringing the viewer and reader directly into the world of these artists to hear their own unique voices-has already won the Art:21 series the prestigious Golden Hugo Award for "the best in international television," and a rave notice from the New York Times: "When the artists do the talking, something fascinating happens."

I am a practicing artist and really enjoyed listening to other artists share themselves and their art in a very intimate and informative format,
get the DVD too.......2006-03-24
This book was required for my Contemporary Art class. Great pictures....the accompaning DVD goes into more depth about each artist and provides more info about each artist than does the book.
Art at its finest.......2006-03-20
This is an excellent book and an excellent series for anyone who wants to know more about art being creating today. My Art History professor uses this book at the text book for her Contemporary Art class. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in seeing art history in the making.
the best series on contemporary art ever!.......2005-12-23
I am a faithful follower of this series, and use the dvds in my contemporary art history class. The companion books make wonderful text to supplement the television series.
I love this series.......2005-12-15
I have the first two books in the series and hope to spend the rest of my life watching the PBS program and looking and thinking about the artwork presented both on video and in the beautifully crafted texts.

Being American has always been a wonderful thing. But after September 11, 2001, patriotism soared. Not since the 1940s had America been attacked with such unexpected and horrible decisiveness. In 1,003 Great Things About America, authors Lisa Birnbach, Ann Hodgman, and Patricia Marx perfectly sum up that combination of humor and hope, wit and wonder, that makes America so magnificent. What are some of the best things about America' As this talented trio of authors remind us:o Apple pieo John Wayneo Mount Rushmoreo Elviso BaseballThe list goes on and on. From beginning to end, 1,003 Great Things About America serves as a keen and admiring look at those elements that give our nation its indefatigable character. From Frank Sinatra to the Super Bowl, from hamburgers to the Hamptons, 1,003 Great Things About America rings true and timeless. Our other 1,003 Great Things books have focused on everything from kids to moms to teachers. Most recently, 1,003 Great Things About Getting Older sold more than 150,000 copies. 1,003 Great Things About America is certain to become a best-seller, as citizens from coast to coast yearn to remind themselves about the best parts of the place they call home.
Customer Reviews:
Save your money-book is pointless & has factual errors.......2006-06-28
Lisa Birnbach & company are milking the "1003 Great Things about......." concept in much the same way that comedian Jeff Foxworthy milked the "You might be a redneck if......." idea. The book is full of pointless "great things," many of which appear to be nothing more than random thoughts from the authors.
As a Kentucky resident, I was particularly annoyed by a factual error on page 126, which goes as follows: "Christian County, Kentucky is wet, while Bourbon County, Kentucky is dry. Barren County has the most fertile land in the state." Unfortunately, this claim, while it is a widely held belief, is incorrect. This myth was most recently spread as fact by Vince Staten in his dreadful book, "Kentucky Curiosities." Bourbon County, Kentucky has always allowed the sale of alcohol, except during prohibition, when alcohol sales were prohibited everywhere in the US. A visit to the Paris-Bourbon County Tourist Commission website debunks th "Bourbon County doesn't allow alcohol sales" myth. Also, the authors' claim that Barren County has the most fertile land in the state is dubius at best. The Native Americans called this area "the barrens" because it was flat and had less vegetation relative to the surrounding areas. Hence, the name Barren County.
Under "Great American past times," the authors list running under the sprinkler, toasting marshmallows, spin the bottle, skinny dipping, breaking in a new pair of jeans, trying to confuse the substitute teacher. What, these things can only be enjoyed in America? Under "We Allow Everyone a Second Chance," O.J. Simpson is cited as an example. Okay, the authors believe it is a great thing that O.J. got away with murdering his ex-wife and her friend. I could go on and on indefinitely, because the book has 300 pages of such non-sense.
My theory is that when the three authors come up with another idea for a "1003 Great Things about...." book, they get together and get drunk, and laugh the night away while writing down whatever comes to mind until they reach their magic number of 1003. This is the only plausible explanation, as the books are neither humorous or factually correct. Obviously, they are cashing on it, or they would keeping writing books along that concept. Please don't aid and abet them in this venture: save your ten bucks and go buy yourself some cheap wine or liquor. At least then you will have a little fun while working on a headache.
What were they thinking?.......2002-07-23
I really, really wanted to like this book. I was expecting a humorous compilation of things which make these United States the greatest nation on the face of the earth. There is some of that. The book starts off with a paean to American-grown oranges (they are more orange than oranges grown elsewhere).
Then on page 4 we are treated to this great "thing": "You'll always remember your senior prom, especially if you weren't invited." Huh? This does not compute.
On page 61 we are informed that "Reading scores for kids can't possibly get lower." Well, yes they can. But how is that a great thing about America.
I also found several factual errors. For example, on page 20 the authors write "Even the District of Columbia has representatives to Congress." No, DC does not have representatives, DC has a nonvoting delegate in the House. Maybe this is splitting hairs, but the residents of DC thinks it matters.
Going through this book left a sour test in my mouth. There are so many great things about the USA, the authors could have done better.

Book Description
In this "rousing book that salutes the passion, the joy, and the pleasures of singing, music, and practice" (Spirituality and Health), Joan Oliver Goldsmith celebrates America's over 20 million singers and "teaches us that...to pursue a creative passion is a true act of love" (New Age). She guides us not only behind the scenes of choirs and ensembles but inside the making and hearing of harmonious sound. "Her words soar, growl, cry and whisper. And they inspire" (Publishers Weekly, starred review). As Goldsmith shares wisdom about finding one's voice, making mistakes, teaching, friendship, and the essential elements of creativity, "you'll learn [that] much of what she's learned from music is applicable to almost any life" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

Huge awakening to a cross-pollinization.......2006-03-14
I've sung chorally since early in grade school, quit during the graduate years and growing a family, and when "catastrophe" hit (job, marriage, home loss- simultaneously; like the author), I also found a deep grounding in knowing that there was "rehearsal on Monday nights".
I'd not previously drawn parallels between singing and life. I just didn't recognize the metaphors.
But I've learned from this author's ability to do so, and I am grateful for her insights. I feel enriched in that way.
I've spent a bunch of time in spiritual literature. meditation, and in prayer; I've dedicated time to singing (yes- auditioned choruses; semi-paid choir gigs) but the parallels never crytallized.
They do for me in this book. I'm thankful for her awakening me to ways of relating singing to aspects of my daily life, enhancing my memories, and enriching my future in singing. And in looking for the parallels in life.
It is fun- to have my life's most significantly enjoyable times tied to how I was/am actually living; and see the relationships!
Before I go, in my view, the professional/commercial reviews of this book on Amazon and elsewhere were patronizing; assuming that the goal was a "professional" career and an apologetic for its failure.
Couldn't be further from the truth. There was not much, if any, recognition of the idea that this might have been a labor of genuine love and portrayal of amateur singing!
Or that any of the professional reviewers managed to find out the latin root of "amateur".
How can I keep from Groaning?.......2002-03-21
Perhaps I'm being too cruel. This was a "Nice" book. Ms Goldsmith has thoughtfuly considered the activity which gives her the most joy in life: emotionally, philisophically and even technically (from a layman's point-of-view). I felt as if I was reading her diary...that the diary had been written with me peering over her shoulder. I was very uncomfortable with that--as if she was waiting for my acknowlegement or approval.
The subtitle speaks of 'Music and the Passionate Life', but Ms Goldsmith's writing implies that she's seeking little more than comfort in life. Ho-hum.
Exploration of human experience or gooey sentiment? I prefer mine dry, I suppose. Make me laugh, make me cry, just don't expect for me to sit still when you rattle on....
What happens when you make a mistake?.......2002-02-01
My typical reaction in situations when I didn't succeed, when I made mistakes, was to run away. I would stop doing the activity (change jobs, refuse to play softball again, etc.) Thus, I used to hide and pretend that I knew what I was doing in choir rehersal. But I came to realize that I couldn't sing out if I was afraid of making a mistake. And the best way to do that is to not hide my mistakes, but to try to learn from them, asking questions. That the point about rehersing is to practice - and that making mistakes is part of that (and part of life). Joan Oliver Goldsmith has been there, and has learned to learn from her mistakes. Reading her book helped me learn from mine.
nice!.......2001-10-11
This is a very good book, definitely worth reading. The writer manages to inspire readers to take passionate risks and never feel its to late to live one's dream. I recommend that anybody in the "seeking" mood check this book out!
I'm hooked after one paragraph........2001-09-11
I sing in the Minnesota Chorale with Joan, and she read part of her book to us tonight. To hear her speak with that much passion was an inspiration to us all - there were tears and thunderous applause. I just bought the book and so can't truly speak for the contents - but I can speak plenty about the woman who wrote the book, and that is recommendation in itself. I can't wait to get reading!

Book Description
In Theaters of War, historian Vincent Casaregola examines the portrayal of WWII in popular culture and how that portrayal has changed over time. In what ways have current politics, events and conflicts effected America's cultural representations of this epic event of the 20th century? The author answers this question, examining the greatest WWII films, literature, theater and art from times such as the Cold War era, the Vietnam War, the Reagan years, and present day. He shows that these portrayals represent not only how Americans see WWII, but also how they see themselves.

Customer Reviews:
Very well written, extremely helpful for American or British.......2000-10-31
I found this book to be very helpful and informative. Although a British legal system book, the fundamentals of filmmaking and legal issues around them are very well set out. Because the industry is global this book really does shed alot of light on the subject matter. The CD Rom with the book is also very helpful
While Well-Written, Not Tailored to American Law.......2000-06-27
On first glance, this book seems quite a find; it comes with a CD-ROM complete with all the contracts discussed in the manuscript. The book's format is also very user-friendly; the left hand page displays contractual language, while the right hand page explains the "legalese" in lay-person's terms. The scope of the book covers the major contracts any indie producer (film or TV) will undoubtedly use. But there's a catch (and a BIG one at that)...
The book is written by an English attorney, and seems tailored to English law. The U.S. publisher has neglected to indicate this fundamental split anywhere on the cover. Although American Law originally came from English Common law, there are just too many differences between the two system's today to make this a reliable source for American producers and attorneys unfamiliar with the differences between both systems.
A case in point is the book's treatment of Copyright law. The English system is a bit different than ours; copyright terms and policy issues are often at variance with U.S. law. These subtle differences will probably slip by most producers and attorneys unfamiliar with U.S. intellectual property law..
Bottom line: it is a good book if you are well-grounded in American contract and I.P. law and want to see how the English handle entertainment contracts. But if you aren't well versed in differences between the two legal systems, the ease of downloading a contract form that may not comport with American law might get you into more trouble than its worth.

Great resource for British action/adventure/sci-fi TV fans.......2003-05-03
Very detailed reference describing most of the
classic British TV series in the action, adventure,
crime, and sci-fi genres.
About 200 series are documented, the best known
(in the USA) being The Avengers,
Danger Man (Secret Agent), Dempsey and Makepeace, The Prisoner, The Saint,
The Sandbaggers, Sapphire and Steel, Space 1999, and UFO.
Most of the series in the book, however, have probably not been seen
in the USA.
In addition to overview summaries of each series,
detailed episode guides are provided, which include plots and guest stars.
Black-and-white cast photos are included.
My copy is dated 1988 and I don't know if it has been updated.
However, most of the great classics are included - including
many that are now being released on DVD.
