Art nouveau embraced massive works of architecture and delicate pieces of jewelry, images of eerie seductresses and sinuous plant forms as well as flowing abstract shapes. The style transformed the decorative arts of many countries at a moment when Western culture believed itself to be on the brink of enormous change. Being ultramodern in the 1890s meant moving away from classical standards of beauty to create a sophisticated blend of nature and artifice. It also meant finding fresh inspiration in art history (Gothic architectural ornament, the airy curlicues of rococo art), non-European cultures (flat patterning in Japanese woodcuts, whiplash curves in Islamic art), or native folk art traditions.

Authoritative and elegantly written essays by 22 specialists, illustrated with 507 sumptuous photographs, make Art Nouveau, 1890-1914 one of the finest art books in recent memory. Produced to accompany a major exhibition that opened at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and runs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from October 8, 2000, through January 28, 2001, this volume is the first to illuminate the full range of art nouveau media and the complex connections--scientific, literary, mystical, mythological, psychological, industrial, nationalistic--that allowed it to take root in Europe and the U.S.

The famous art nouveau figures are all represented, of course: architects and designers Charles Rennie Macintosh, Victor Horta, Hector Guimard, Josef Hoffmann, Antonio Gaudí; art glass wizards Louis Comfort Tiffany and Émile Gallé; illustrators Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha. But part of the pleasure of this book consists in discovering exquisite or bizarre pieces by lesser-known designers empowered by the dark sensuality of a style that perversely borrowed from nature to celebrate the nervous energy of urban culture. --Cathy Curtis

Book Description

Art Nouveau exploded onto the art and design scene in the early 1890s and spread rapidly throughout the Western world. This lush volume-created to accompany a major museum exhibition that opened at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, before moving to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., in October 2000-is the most beautiful, complete, and wide-ranging study ever published on this enormously popular and influential style.

A wealth of illustrations and rare period photographs showcase masterpieces in all mediums-from Tiffany lampshades, Mucha posters, Klimt paintings, and Lalique jewelry to architecture by Victor Horta, Antoni Gaud, and Louis Sullivan. The text, by 20 leading scholars, is a timely reappraisal of a style that flourished at the turn of the last century, in a world grappling with new ideas and rapid social change. Decadent yet popular, both loved and hated, Art Nouveau gave rise to the concept of an all-encompassing "lifestyle environment"-a total work of art designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience.

This season's most scintillating art book, Art Nouveau, 1890-1914 will be unrivaled for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Reminder That One's Entire Home Can Be "Art" .......2007-07-12

A lot of people hear the word "Art" and think of a painting on the wall or a sculpture proudly displayed on a table or mantle. The lush images in this book remind us that we can incorporate "Art" into every physical part of our lives. There's no need to sacrifice form for function or beauty for utility. All you have to do is look at the woodwork, the floors, the lighting, the walls, and, yes, the decorative objects--in short, every aspect of an art nouveau home--to see "Art" in the smallest detail. Art Nouveau exemplifies the principle of "Art for Life".

5 out of 5 stars All the pictures are color!!!!.......2004-12-10

This is a rare gem among art histories: A well researched book that an average person will enjoy as much as a researcher. What makes this book stand out from other books about art nouveau is how thorough it is (It is phone book thick) and the quantity and quality of the pictures. All the reproductions of art in this book are color, with the obvious exception of older photographs of artists and occasionally architecture or artifacts that no longer exist except in black and white pictures.

The book takes the theory that art nouveau was part of a social response to industrialization. So the art is defined as art that used a return to nature or investigation into magic to try to make sense of the world. Art works are organized by what materials they were created from (jewelry, ceramics, textile, commercial advertising prints). Paintings and some examples of the other medias are grouped by country with a historical write on art nouveau in that geographical region.

This book is great. The high quality color reproductions and so many of them are worth looking through again and again. If you are at all into art nouveau then you are likely to love this book. Libraries should make this available because of the wonderful high quality color reproductions.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE BOOK on Art Nouveau........2004-03-20

This is the book to get on Art Nouveau. The authoritative essays are well annotated, and an excellent bibliography is included. The illustrations are very fine. Of course this is a nice "coffee table book," but really this is a wonderful reference book for scholars of the Fin de Siècle-Belle Époque. Highly recommended!

Book Description

Dazzling in their bold use of color and wide range of designs, Art Nouveau tiles are enjoying a resurgence in popularity. These international tile designs encompassed striking decorative elements to be used in residences and public buildings. High fired, these tiles retain their original color and beauty despite over one hundred years of use. This book, designed for both the beginning collector and the long time lover of tiles, includes full color examples of over 600 designs. A very useful and beautiful collectors guide, it provides information about many major tile manufacturers. It is arranged by company and design and contains a guide to market prices, as well as suggestions and tips for tile collectors. Filling a gap in the tile books currently available, this volume provides both the largest collection of single Art Nouveau images published to date, and a concise introduction to the field of tiles. A bibliography contains research sources for more detailed study and information regarding organizations devoted to tile preservation and collection. This is the perfect choice for any lover of ceramic surfaces and those who appreciate and enjoy color and design. It will undoubtedly be instrumental in not only introducing many to the beauty of Art Nouveau design, but also expanding their interest in collecting this amazing art form.

5 out of 5 stars Art Nouveau Tiles C. 1890 - 1914.......2002-11-24

Sometimes you need a good source, with photographs, for identifying the many, many art nouveau tiles out there. THIS BOOK DOES THAT!!!! Over the years I have collected some art nouveau tiles and, with the aid of this book --- IN MINUTES --- I was able to identify all of them. As a bonus a current value for each tile is also provided. For the serious tile collector Art Nouveau Tiles by Sandra Fowler and Wendy Harvey is a MUST!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Art Nouveau tile C. 1890-1914.......2002-02-18

I was disappointed with the quality of this book. All the photos are either digital or downloaded from the web. There is a great variety of beautiful tiles but the images themselves are really grainy.

Y'know, before I checked this manga series out, I never would've considered incest to be even remotely amusing. But for some reason, this smutty series depicting a young man's sick little urges and the mother & sister who fulfill them leaves me yukkin' it up like a mental patient every time I read it. Throw in a dalliance with the next-door neighbor's wife, and our randy protagonist's final inner battle against his evil split personality, and you've got one of Japan's most bizarre and hilarious naughty book imports out there!

The final chapter includes few other depraved brother-sister relationships, including a little gender-bending story that I didn't care for (BTW why do hentai mangaphiles find she-males so interesting, anyway?). But, I can overlook that little lull in the fun, since it's at the very end. And there's plenty of other depraved illustrations & captions to get happy with!

Okay this covers the second half of the original series butdon't worry the plots not hard to pick up.

Yu the hero of the bookshas a split personality at the first hint of sexual provocation his instinct destroys his reason (an ongoing series of battles that provide some of the series humour) and he becomes an accomplished lover.

Unfortunately the people willing to provide provocation include his sister, mother and aunt.

This is a humourous and very sexy series, the art is b & W very pokished and very much in the manga style starting at vol 2 won't spoil your enjoyment it will make you want vol 1

Warning: Despite the book's flippant tone and very funny overall approach, Why Everybody Hates Toronto also contains some surprising depth and insight concerning Toronto woes. It's a content-rich, humourous, must-read for anyone who has ever lived in, visited, or thought of Toronto. Michael B. Davie has produced a first-rate book!

5 out of 5 stars You'll love Why Everybody Hates Toronto.......2006-12-21

I got quite a few good chuckles from the first half of this book when author Michael B. Davie gives Toronto a few good-natured pokes in the ribs.
And I learned a lot from the second half of the book, which takes on a more serious tone and examines some pressing problems in Canada's largest city, including rising homicide rates, homelessness and race-oriented crimes.
While the author openly discusses Toronto's problems and challenges, he does so in a fairly affectionate way (reading between the lines), despite the book's attention-getting title. On the whole, this is a very well researched and thought provoking book. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars not even worth a star!.......2006-09-15

For all the reviews here with 5 stars, check the other reviews written, and you'll find that all of those books are either written by Michael B. Davie or published by so-called Manor publishing company. Now it's an easy guess who wrote all the favorable, but deceiving reviews. This book is the first ever I really wanted to return. It's garbage. Do not waste your money!

5 out of 5 stars Why Everybody Hates Toronto is one great book.......2006-04-03

Why Everybody Hates Toronto is one of the best books I've read in years. Well researched, full of details and with many touches of humour, this book goes well beyond the flippant send-up it purports to be. Beyound the wickedly witty barbs, there's some deep, insightful looks at major issues such as crime, congestion, runaway real estate prices and other woes. And despite its title, I was surprised to find that this book also has a lot of good things to say about Toronto and presents a sympathetic view in places. All in all a superb book that really proves Toronto has come of age. The Argos still suck though.

                  5 out of 5 stars Very interesting, thought-provoking book.......2005-07-04

There's a lot of funny stuff in this book, no doubt about it. But there's also a lot of interesting, serious, thought-provoking content - and that's what really makes this book a must-read. To his credit, author Michael B. Davie doesn't simply rely on his own opinions; he takes a very thorough, heavily researched approach that draws on the observations and opinions of many, many experts. I found I learned a great deal about Toronto, not all of it bad, and I'd recommend this book even to people who really like this city. This is an informative and fascinating book - I couldn't put it down.

                  1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2005-06-12

I have never returned a book before to get my money back but I will in this case. I picked this book up as it was on the display counter of my local bookstore. I have read Will Ferguson's Why I hate Canadians and was expecting a similar enjoyable experience. Instead I wasted $20 and a few hours of my life.

This book is unreadable due to the amount of spelling and grammatical errors. Get an editor or proof reader before you distribute a book! At the very least use the spell check function of your word processing program. This may explain why the book was "self published" as it is doubtful Michael Davie could get a book deal from a decent publishing house. And he is supposed to be a journalist?

The book is only 179 large print pages, not counting the 12 pages of bibliographical quotes. Which are necessary by the way since most of this book is quotes from others. Most of this book is based on recent news stories. The supposed problems with Toronto are nothing more than descriptions of any large city in the world. There is no depth to this book nor entertainment value. It is nothing but a self serving piece of repetitive trite.

                  Don't waste your money.

Shame this is out of print. Simpson was annotator, promoter at The BBC. He is a composer himself of large scale symphonies.

Bruckner has long been an enigmatic creator, a late bloomer, spending years in pedagogical subjection of counterpoint. And his oefish, awkward demeanor gave a false impression to those who surrounded him, usually less talented unclairvoyant scholars who sought the necessity to revise his symphonies. Simpson here scours these giant symphonic boulders one by one, revealing where a great rupture takes place, where Bruckner's symphonic vision begins to look outward, beginning with the Fifth Symphony. Although the D-minor Third begins this transmogrification of vision. Bruckner looked well beyond the shadow of Beethoven, not utilizing that aesthetic pallette of pent up momentums, and overwrought festering movements that get resolved. Instead the Bruckner movement in fact doesn't move, there is no forward moving implication, we must simply withstand the overbearing presence of each movement in its own right, within its own oceanic spaces. Simpson is a good writer and brings some literary image to the outside gestural features, as his machine-like repetitive conconctions, its moments which simply begin and end mindlessly at times,as the various variegated Scherzi. You need the score I found to read Simpson for he does drag us through these symphonies as a callable narrative, moment to moment, step by step,(not quite note for note) inch by inch. This can get tedious, but that is what was the usual fare of musical analysis. Now hopefully there are those essays which introduce more social and political dimensions to the creation of art.

                      Book Description

Poets at Bush House seeks to draw attention to a comparatively little known aspect of English cultural life, the BBC World Service, at a time when it is about to leave its historic home on The Strand. The initial aim was to produce a book that would represent a substantial selection of the many languages in which the BBC broadcasts from Bush House (by the end of World War II the Corporation was already broadcasting in forty-five languages). As well as representing work by a few of the notable writers formerly associated with the service, the anthology also includes contributions by some currently at Bush House, including translations by David Constantine, Michael Scammel, Sasha Dougdale and Zinovy Zinik.
