Book Description
Indispensable collection for enhancing menus, invitations, ad copy, greeting cards, catalogs — almost any graphic project — includes 199 black-and-white designs, among them crisply rendered floral and foliate motifs, butterflies and peacocks, female figures and sensuous cherubs, asymmetrical shapes and undulating lines, all in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing .......2007-08-14
The ppi is far to small to enlarge. I had hoped to use the frames for digital scrapbooking, but the images are not suitable for that purpose.
Great book for any art project........2007-03-14
This book was great for any art project. I use the easy to use cd-rom to create borders for invitations, brochures, ads, labels, and so much more. The only complaint I have is there are alot of repeat of the same design, I believe they are meant to be different sizes but I found them unnessesary. Other than that I loved it!
Great images, poorly delivered.......2006-04-05
These are beautiful and very useful images - great for invitations, menus and the like. A wide range of shapes and styles within Art Nouveau - some Charles Rennie Mackintosh-inspired stylised roses, and more French Belle-Epoch style curvilinear designs as well. I WOULD have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the actual files on the CD.
The 'jpegs and gifs ready for web delivery' are tiny - about the same size as in the book, whereas I would have thought using them on the web would have been... well, as a border. Big enough to contain something like text, for example. No such luck - they're only about 150 pixels across. What good is a frame/border that small?
The tifs are much larger, at a printable resolution of 600dpi and about 1500 pixels across - but this is where it stunned me. They've been reduced to 2 colours, black and white. Anyone who's worked with graphics at all knows that to get the appearance of curves and diagonals, you need at least 16 colours of greyscale to 'anti-alias'. Technical definitions aside, what it means is that they appear horribly jagged. Considering that curves are what Art Nouveau is all about, this seems particularly ironic.
Even the eps files have had this same treatment - they're not vectors, they're 2 colour bitmaps. Which means to use them, you need to feather the edges to make them look less jagged, or...
I suggest scanning from the book. I know it defeats the purpose of buying a book that has a CD with it, but they're really beautiful images and worthwhile using. They scan well, as they're on good quality paper and printed only on one side of the paper.
I'm more than a little annoyed that the pitch suggests they're ready-to-use in a variety of formats, when the grave error of reducing all of the formats to 2-colours has rendered them pretty much unusable from CD.
I've just bought about 20 of the Dover book-CD sets, and they're not all like this - I'll slowly work my way through and write a review of each after trying to actually use the files, in the hope that it helps people to decide which ones are the better ones to buy. There are new ones coming out all the time - let's hope that they're not all as shoddily treated as the files on this CD.
Dover, what were you thinking? These designs deserved much better treatment. This is from the Electronic Clip Art series - doesn't anyone actually try using the files after the CD's been made?

Wonderful book.......2000-09-20
This book (with CD) is great. There are lots of images for numerous projects. Having the CD saves lots of scanning time and frustration. Highly recommended.

Super Reader.......2007-08-07
A little bit longer than some other books like this, so perhaps slightly more complex. This is a just post Pantheon Hulk, stuck in reverse, intelligent and green, or mindless savage and human.
A younger relative Major Talbot reforms the Hulkbusters and fails, the Banners are forced to move a couple of times. Betty gets pregnant.
Siamese twins, enter Dr Strange in a complicated surgical procedure to try and save them.
Enter the Maestro, taking one son.
The Hulk follows through the Crossroads and dimensions, to track him down. A planet with a stuffed Rick Jones, and an elite unit of Hulks, including WolvaDeathlok Hulk, Thing Hulk and Elric Hulk. The Hulk's son is now a grown half-Hulk, too. In a nasty twist, the name of this unit is also the Hulkbusters.
All in all, one of those crazy Hulk stories with the lot, tragedy, Hulkbusting and bashing.
The Hulk and Major Talbot discuss Les Miserables, and Banner and his son have an argument about Nietzsche! Didn't see those coming. Something here for everyone almost, and really, a 3.75 I'd say.
Peter David writing the Hulk.....what more can one ask for?.......2004-11-10
I've been a fan of the Hulk for almost two decades now, so I was very excited when I first heard he would be featured in a full-length book.
Having been ousted by his former Pantheon teammates, the Hulk is left with only one alternative: to keep a low-profile and try to lead a normal life with his beautiful and understanding wife, Betty. However, things have never been that simple for the Hulk, and soon he must deal with an endless array of obstacles including a single-minded army major, an unexpected pregnancy, and a bizarre new series of transformations.
Peter David, a magnificent writer of both comic books and novels, manages to blend the two distinct mediums together and produce a story that has an instant all-around appeal. The first chapter tells new readers everything they need to know, most notably how the Hulk changed from a raging child-like brute to an intelligent and self-confident genius.
David's descriptions of the characters and their surroundings are expressed with such vivid detail that it's easy to picture the workings of each scene in our minds. From a mundane suburban apartment to a mysterious otherworldly dimension, everything is always perfectly clear.
Also featuring illustrations by renowned comic book artist George Perez (Incredible Hulk: Future Imperfect, Avengers/JLA), What Savage Beast is an action-packed, emotionally-gripping tale that more than lives up to its reputation. Strongest one there is!
The So-So Hulk.......2003-11-04
While I enjoy stories about the Hulk, I've grown so very tired of 'evil army people' after the Hulk. Yes, I know that the military chasing and hunting the Hulk as been there since the beginning but I really wish they would do away with it. After all if the military chased down super-being because of the damage they coul dor have done they would be after everyone. It just isn't a story line that should be kept up. Aside from not liking the military involvement in the Hulk "What Savage Beast" was a decent read. It was a quick read (finished in 2 days) and you really don't have to strain yourself to follow along.
To have been a really good book the author should have delved into the relationship problems between Bruce and Betty. If there were ever a place to show the most powerful being in the world to be completly helpless it would be as he faced the wrath of his wife. That I would have payed extra to read. But alas the tension in the marriage was never used to full effect and only briefly touched on.
Again not a baad book but I would borrow it from a friend or library and spend my $ on something better.
Believe the hype on this book...........2003-03-14
Now THIS is what I'm talking about. Finally a novel worthy of its main character. You can tell that Peter David knows his stuff, and *GASP!!!* actually CARES about his characters instead of just writing about them. I was actually shocked by how much turmoil that the main characters (Bruce Bnner/Hulk, Betty Banner, Doc Samson)went through in this book, OUTSIDE of normal comic continuity. This is quite literally a "page turner" as the sotry is just, literally, all over the place. My only complaint is that the end conclusion feels abrupt and rushed. Maybe Mr. David was on a deadline, or maybe he just couldn't come up with a worthy enough conclusion to his fantastic story. Who knows, but it won't diminish the impact of what happened before. It's a shame that Mr. David didn't write another Hulk novel, as the Hulk novels are actually some of the better ones. Oh well, definately check this out!
WHOA!.......2001-06-12
The Incredible Hulk was my favourite marvel superhero ever since I was a kid ,that is why I purchased this book because I had hoped that it would bring me back to the childhood days of yesteryears, boy did I got more than what I bargained for!!I was stuck with the savage Hulk when last I read about him ,and when I read this book....it took me to new planes of where the Hulk is now,his multiple personality disorder and his temporary cure by Dr Leonard Samson,His relationship with Betty Thunderbolt Ross, the miraculous cure of the Hulks transformation dilemma was really a cool twist in this book ,and most of all,The Hulks/Bruce Banners sons!!!!!I shouldn't say anything more!this book kept me at the edge of my seat and made me beg for more.If you're a fan of the Hulk, this is an epic,if you're not a fan ,you'll become a fan !!!!!!

Book Description
Once upon a time in America, storefront help-wanted signs reading "Irish Need Not Apply" were commonplace. Back then, the Irish were only considered fit for the most menial, hazardous, or undignified of jobs. But that was fine for a culture of survivors-if the famine didn't kill them, a little ditch digging wouldn't either. And so Irish grandparents and great grandparents struggled and fought and finally flourished in their new land.Today, millions of Americans can trace their ancestry to Ireland. This small volume is a love letter to Irish heritage, a reminder of shared experience, forgotten traditions, and the beliefs and attitudes that define the Irish Americans. It contains reminiscences, common memories, and stereotypes-some deserved, others not. Sometimes funny, sometimes nostalgic and touching, this book is an everyman's history of a nation of immigrant survivors, a tribute to Irish Americans and their ancestors.

worth it for the Rosanne Cash essay.......2005-10-14
brilliant writing by a brilliant under-appreciated artist/writer/ songwriter who transcends the limits of many genres, boundaries, expectations
Francisco Franco is still dead..........2003-11-30
...and Frank Zappa is still wrong: rock music journalism does not have to be people who can't write interviewing people who can't speak for people who can't read. This installment of the Da Capo "Best Music Writing" series features a wide range of pieces both stylistically and in terms of subject matter. Nik Cohn's article "Soljas" on the New Orleans rap scene, originally published in Granta, is an astonishing piece of writing and would deserve to be in a collection of "Best Writing of 2002," music-oriented or not. Three other contributions are striking for their biographical writing, illuminating broader, non-musical themes: RJ Smith on the LA enigma Korla Pandit, Michael Hall on Texas psychedelic rocker Roky Ericson, and Matthew C. Duersten on jazz diva Anita O'Day. There are more traditional musicological contributions (David Cantwell "Help Me Make It Through the Night") and humorous satire from the Onion. A very enjoyable volume. Would make a good gift for anyone interested in popular music or just good writing.
A series which hand-picks the year's best music writing.......2002-12-06
Da Capo Best Music Writing 2002 is the third volume in a series which hand-picks the year's best writing about music, covering all genres and providing a host of literary articles reflecting on music's personalities, evolution, and content. From a survey of the underground New Orleans rap scene from an insider's stand to a composer of haiku for Eminem and details on Bob Dylan and Louie Armstrong, Da Capo Best Music Writing 2002 holds something for everyone.

Book Description
At last, a collection in one volume informing the citizenry about a phenomenon that has existed for nearly a quarter century: community television represents our single source for media access in the United States. With more than 2,000 community groups providing some 15,000 hours of original programming each week--more than the annual output of ABC, CBS, and NBC combined--Community Television compares and contrasts broadcasting and grassroots cablecasting in the form of public, educational, and government (PEG) access. Fuller describes community television in terms of its history, its technical characteristics, and its legal, economic, political, and social concerns, highlighting the work of more than 150 related organizations and local television efforts from 100 cities and towns. She analyzes how competing exigencies and emerging communication technologies might threaten access in the future. Students, scholars, and professionals in television, communications, and public policy will find this reference a definitive one.

From the supplier: Minnesota State University created a wireless network for its Mankato network under a student-led initiative when the school's Student Technology Committee voted to recommend funding for building a wirelessly connected campus. The students formally stated that they would put their own monies into technology they knew existed on other campuses but had not actually seen and placed great faith in the school's Information Technology Services (ITS) staff. MSU developed a seven-step process model to move to a wireless campus. ITS staff first had to attend technology conferences to educate themselves and contact vendors. Development of a prototype helped enhance the school's knowledge of wireless technology and raised issues about where to obtain good equipment at low prices. The prototype phase was followed by site survey and planning in order to determine the best locations for wireless access points. Another major step was development of an implementation plan. Step six involves gathering funding for administrative areas to cover, and step seven is an assessment of the initiative's effectiveness. MSU selected Lucent Technologies' Orinoco WaveLAN products.

From the supplier: Students at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill are using a sophisticated wireless network to obtain high-speed Internet access, e-mail and access to the campus intranet from many locations. UNC's Cisco Systems Aironet wireless network technology supports a new laptop requirement that will eventually reach 15,000 undergraduates. UNC's computerization move has the biggest scope among US research universities and takes many unique approaches. The university has deployed Cisco Aironet 340 series wireless access points in seven academic buildings as well as libraries, student stores, the student union and the administration building; each has a reach extending to adjacent courtyards and popular student gathering places. Students can buy their own Cisco wireless PC Cards or check them out at the graduate library. The technology facilitates collaboration among students in small groups and can turn virtually any campus location into a learning environment. The wireless network supports a wired network.

From the supplier: Colorado State University (CSU) has adopted a wireless network for its library in order to facilitate student research and give both students and staff high-speed access to computing resources. The school chose 3Com's AirConnect wireless networking solution to let students work individually or in groups throughout the library. It lends out laptops equipped with 3Com wireless network cards to offer Internet connectivity and enrich the learning experience. Among the learning resources the wireless network provides is fast, easy access to more than 400 browser-accessible databases containing abstracts and full-text journal articles on numerous academic subjects. The network connects to CSU's SAGE public access online catalog and has strategically located access points that allow students to quickly find books in the stacks. Students can use the university-owned laptops, which have Microsoft Office installed, to write papers as well. CSU plans to add access points elsewhere on campus in the future.
