Enjoyable But Quirky Look at the Grid.......2006-11-29
If this book were a website it would have serious usability problems. You often have to rotate the book 90 degrees to read a lot of the text, and a lot of the key graphics are way too small while non-essential graphics are blown up way beyond their importance. E.g. some grid layouts discussed in the text are accompanied by a graphic of the aforementioned layout at the size of a matchbox; while a graphic of a relatively uninformative application toolbar spans the entire spread. The designers have sacrificed readability and comprehension to "style".
It's a pity because this book has some interesting information on grids, and tackles the subject from unusual angles. If you're already familiar with the grid then the text and mini essays provide a refreshing perspective on this topic. The content is of mixed value and should be read critically, much of it is clearly presented as a particular designer's view or idiosyncratic method which may or may not be useful to you depending on your design philosophy and methods.
If you are just learning about grids then this is not the place to start. There is some practical information on how to create and set up a grid but surprisingly it comes right at the end in the last 2 chapters and it is only briefly touched upon.
I half-heartedly recommend this book if you want to view the grid in a wider context, or from a historical or psychological perspective, and want to explore how some designers approach the grid. Be prepared to work a little, thanks to the small graphics and "designer" layout. Despite these problems, I enjoyed reading this book; it's a break from the more dense and dry works on the subject which I am immersed in a lot of the time. Be aware that it's not a book that will teach you very much about actually implementing the grid in your own work, though you might get some new insights and ideas.

This book was pretty horrible. If you are looking for a book that will teach you HOW TO USE grids in design, this definitely, MOST definitely isn't it. I can't tell you how much this ISN'T it. This is mostly just a commentary on grids, theories, and apparant use of the grid in society. Most theories on the use of grid in society are really quack though. This is the type of book that takes things TOO far. It's based on some rather quack opinions.
This book doesn't approach the grid from a learning standpoint, as in, how to USE a grid or develop a grid. It is a coffee table book.
The layout of the book is horrible. You open the book and see in the inside of the cover which is lime green and you might think that this might be a nice, fun book. But it isn't. The layout of the pages suck. It doesn't matter who designed this book, how many design awards they won, or whatever but this book is POORLY designed. It's too heavy on style to be read like a book. The style is pointless. It's even difficult to navigate your way through the table of contents! It seems like the designers designed this book for themselves and not for people to READ.
Overall, the content is pretty worthless.
Good Content, Interesting Design.......2003-07-10
This book is a great resource for those wishing to learn more about grids. What was most interesting to me was the portions discussing the history of the grid and the psychology of the grid. The rest of the book is great as well though. My only complaint would have to be that even though a very interesting grid is utilized throughout the book, the lack of changes in font size allow no development of a hierarchy of information and make the headers at time distracting and overall make the book a little difficult to read. other than that I highly reccomend this book.

Upon completing Pre-Candidacy classes for National Boards, I realized that I needed more precise information. This book was very helpful in pointing me in the right direction for my certification.

Very helpful, but I'm not too sure how up to date the information is. Although this book has some excellent sample activities, a much more succinct (and less expensive) work is "So, You Want to Become a National Board Certified Teacher?" (2006 edition).
Candidates might want to also sneak a peek at "Mentoring the NBPTS Candidate". While intended for mentors, NBPTS candidates may find some very helpful information in those pages also.

If you are working toward National Boards you have to have this book! I wish I would have had it when I began. The author gives sample answers to prompts and allows you to see at least what kind of information you need to be including. When I started my entries I had no idea of how to start because they give you no specific directions. This book does! It is a must have!!

Very helpful book! I was not sure how helpful this would really be, but I was impressed. Had some sample writing that was useful. I am just sorry I didn't get this until I was almost done with the process! Wish I'd gotten it at the beginning- it would have been much more helpful.

The book was not exactly whta i was looking for as i needed a book on how to prepare a sports portfolio. The book gudes you on how to prepare an arts portfolio.

This book appeals to all variations of artists (photography, design, jewelry, misc. artwork). It provides information on how to prepare, organize, and present your portfolio. Very nice for people starting out in thier careers or for those just wanting to update older work. Very informative and well worth looking into.

Helpful advice!.......2004-10-09
I am applying for National Board certification this year and I was hoping this book could help ease some of my fears about the process. It definitely did that! It's filled with great advice and lots of helpful places to record reflections and thoughts. I had hoped it would give more samples of what the assessors were looking for, but it didn't really do that. I was also hoping it would give more insight on the content of the 6 hour exam that comes at the end of the certification process, but it mostly gave advice about the test. Regardless, I found this book very helpful (moreso than "Navigating the National Board Process" which I also purchased). In my opinion, every little bit of information helps, so if you have applied for National Board and you're looking for helpful advice and info, you might enjoy this book.

A group of teachers at my school went to the National Board presentation done by our state presenter. She recommended this book as a helpful workbook through this process. I plan on going through this process this coming year. I will enter another review then. I am hoping that our state presenter's recommendation is correct!

Tired of wandering the aisles of the video store, only to succumb to yet another film made for teenage boys? The one-page reviews, all organized alphabetically, are sure to enthuse even the staunchest cinephile - but especially fans of "The New York Times." You won't agree with everything, to be sure. But there's definitely something for everyone here. A great gift book for a cinephile.
Not the best of its kind.......2005-12-04
I had high hopes for this guide, as I generally respect the reviews of A.O. Scott and the New York Times movie review crew. However, this book disappoints in several ways:
1) The movies are heavily skewed towards those released in the last 10 years. The more recent a movie, the less likely I am to have "almost forgotten" it. Sure, Metropolis is in here, but very few other movies until the 1990s. What I'm looking for in a book of this title is more older movies that I am more likely to never have heard fo.
2) Some of the recommended movies are pretty questionable, in my book. I understand there is bound to be difference of opinion, but I doubt that flicks like "Drumline", and "Freddy got Fingered", rank amoung the best movies I've never seen.

Steamshovel's Steaming Farrago of Conspiratorial Connections.......2001-07-27
Kenn Thomas, redoubtable and prolific writer-editor-publisher of Steamshovel Press and its associated Web site, has done us a tremendous favor. He has downloaded 175 pages of short articles from Steamshovel's web site into a remarkable book. Its best feature is that Kenn has been open to input and argument from many different sides of important questions and issues facing us. They include CIA-funded wars and conflicts, strife and murders, at home and abroad; the possibility of secret germ warfare having been conducted both abroad and here at home; "beatniks", UFO's, mind control; Iron Mountain, hoax or horror; Bill Clinton, Paula Jones, Cord and Mary Pinchot Meyer; Gloria Steinem's stints for the CIA; Gordon Liddy and Larry Flynt on the Gemstone File, and much more. The writers come from the Left, the Right, and the Middle; Democrats, Republicans, Reichians; theorists with varied slants on U.S political assassinations, and from many other points on the compass. They talk, discuss, argue with each other, reminiscent of town hall meetings, or what we used to be able to read in magazines featuring controversy before most of them were wiped out by the simple strategy of raising postal rates to brutal levels back in the '70's.
I am grateful for the opportunity to see these varied discussions in print, in one place, at one time, in paperback form. Crouched over a computer monitor, reading isolated articles appearing over several years' time, one would be hard put to be able to compare or coordinate several articles at once. The cast of characters appearing here are a sort of Vonnegut gonfalon of contemporary culture gathered under the banner of free inquiry; everyone is invited.
This book has been published by the new technology: text stored on a huge computer somewhere; copies printed on demand. It makes for flexible production, with no fear of cartons of unsold books getting dusty somewhere. On the negative side, no table of contents and no index means you are on your own when it comes to finding things.
Still, I highly recommend this book, both for the serious researcher into contemporary culture, and for the casual reader seeking to get his or her feet wet in waters far deeper than the "X-files."
